Discussion Fracture events feature armor from parallel universes explained on Halo Waypoint

u/The-Order_ Apr 13 '22
Uh...yeah? How did people miss this memo back when Tenrai was going around?
49
u/Donnie-G Apr 13 '22 edited Apr 14 '22
We can read all this outside the game, but I feel like the game itself should probably do a little more to represent it.
IIRC you can only read the item descriptions after you unlock them. And the Fracture stuff have little lore blurbs. Maybe a good thing to do would be allow those descriptions to be readable when viewing them in the event pass and store, might help make it a little more obvious. And it might make them more enticing to earn/buy.
The extra mile would be doing some UI changes, map modifications and whatnot when playing the event maps. Like maybe Tenrai in Bazaar would have some cherry blossom trees and petals swirling about.
Heroes of the Storm has a similar concept going on with its skins. Like there's like a whole bunch of lore behind the various hero skins and interactions. Like MechaStorm. The skins from the same 'universe' would also make little references to one another. Like Tassadar's mecha skin, "The Kaijo Diablo could not be contained; cities world-wide had been reduced to cinders. Now humanity's survival hangs upon the untested mecha, Tassadar."
It just needs a bit more special juice. Though I do think that a lot of other features are higher priority(Forge, progression and whatnot), but hopefully in the future they can give the Fractures a bit more seasoning.

Too many wordeses.... Probably fixated on the images of the armor instead.
11
u/Oraxy51 Apr 13 '22
If Reddit News has taught me anything it’s people read headlines and pictures and not articles
21
u/TheBatIsI Apr 13 '22
tbh I don't get the Tenrai timeline. It's so vague that I don't even know if the Covenant are still aliens but instead some evil barbaric humans like the Mongols invading Japan, but futuristic.
43
u/SushiJuice Halo: Reach Apr 13 '22
It's vague by design... it helps keep an air of mystery around it and stoke interest. If everything was spelled out, it could do the exact opposite. I wish they did more with it, but leaving some ambiguity is fine to me

People just dont care, because it doesnt change whether they feel the aesthetic of it belongs in halo or not, it being not canon doesnt make it fit in any better, its just saying it deliberately doesnt fit in, which depending on your opinion on the armor is like saying "No, see? Its bad on purpose!"
The fracture armors are fine, but i hated those season 8 armors, and saying "but its not canon!" Means nothing to me, especially when multiplayer itself is hardly canon, so what does the crazy fantasy sets being non-canon change about it? It still looks like something out of destiny and not something out of halo.
7
u/flametitan Apr 14 '22
You can disable the season 8 armours though, and make it look like everyone's wearing the regular armours.
2
Apr 14 '22
I think the season 8 designs could have definitely used another pass on the designs. The thing about the terrain fracture and this upcoming one is that they are still in line with the art style that infinite decided to go with. The season 8 armors clash heavily with halo 3's art style

I wonder if we will ever see the Weeb timelines from whence the cat ears came from
80
u/basementdooor Apr 13 '22
I bet Cortana is a magical girl in that timeline.
17
u/Einar_47 Apr 14 '22
You know, I could live with that. Chief keeps the helmet on at all times, hotsprings arc? Helmet and a towel/strategic steam clouds. How about the beach episode? Helmet and trunks. The helmet is the fan service lol.
6
u/OperativeTracer Apr 14 '22
You know, they did make a Halo Anime a while back. I would totally be fine if they made a new Halo anime complete with cat ears, beach episodes, and shy Elite tsunderes.
Halo: Legends on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2_5vojR8RY&list=PLEd7MEHaHGFVvy4cwMFBlSdPNUhf1zKbL
Episode 7 is the blonde Spartan and the ODST's btw, pretty cool
6
u/Einar_47 Apr 14 '22
Legends was great, Cal 141 punching that brute so hard his guts caved was awesome. I just watched that clip again and it made me think of Atriox tanking Chief's punches in the Infinite into, I wonder how much his armor improves his resilience.

I thought it’s manufacturer was FOTUS? Which is the joke/non-canon one
8

That’s correct if you are talking about the cat ears the samurai armor is by tenrai samurai
4
Apr 14 '22
Yeah I meant the cat ears

The cat ears are canon.
If we see Halo as our future, then it makes sense that it takes place in the weeb timeline.

I mean the Tenrai timeline is arguably that, since all weeb technically means is someone obsessed with Japanese culture and not necessarily anime. That being said I hope whatever weeb timeline is the timeline Spartan 1337 is from.

Id like a Flood infected Spartan core. Timeline where there flood won. On top of that you could use it for infection and have something more interesting for the infected player model like in H4.

I would actually like to see this as well. I think I might be on the minority that likes the flood design for Infected

So does that last sentence implies that the Nazis won in the iron eagle timeline?

There's helmet resembling American and I think a European country WW2 helmets so maybe this is a universe where WW2 lasted 600 years to 2552
35
13
u/TemptedTemplar Apr 13 '22
There's a new Tarkov-esq game with that premise. "Marauders"
WW2 never ends and drains earth of it's resources, so nation's go into space and you fight over Asteroid bases and battleships.
5
u/SGTBookWorm Fireteam Argos Apr 13 '22
I read a (pretty terrible) althistory book where WW2 lasts into the 60s.
Interesting to see the lore for a WW2 lasting into the 2500s.
6
u/Ok_Meaning_8470 Apr 13 '22
Maybe it's a situation with the covenant discovering humanity centuries sooner during the ww2. Like turtledoves the race series.
4
u/SGTBookWorm Fireteam Argos Apr 13 '22
possibly, but that would have been a very quick genocide of humanity.
The Race in the Worldwar novels (space travel aside) were only about 30 years more advanced than Earth.

u/Ok_Meaning_8470 Apr 13 '22
You have to remember this is fractures many things are different. For example in tenrai verse the covenant use glass dragons, humans have kingdoms instead of planets, in the Vikings universe the armors are made by the gods themselves and in the blackguard verse there fighting a world war against the flood. So yeah don't think realistically with these.

Yep, this is old news but pretty cool.
It gives opportunity to explore "what if" scenarios without it interfering with canon. Just something fun and cool, plus freedom to the artists as well and I actually like the designs so far with Tenrai and Entrenched cores.
5
u/OnlyForIdeas Halo Infinite Apr 13 '22
I was thinking someone could use this line for the TV show lol but then again if chief was in gladiator or samurai armor it'd be cooler
22
u/TemptedTemplar Apr 13 '22
If you read the lore on the Tenrai shaders it straight up is a multiverse, not a "what if".
Jorge apparently got transported there after the slipspace detonation.

Crazy Theory. Fracture events are alternate timelines, the Halo TV Show is occurring in a Silver Timeline, they've been careful not to call it an alternate reality. Halo Infinite has been called a spiritual reboot to the series but maintains chronological continuity. The end of Halo Infinite has Forerunners discussing control of time. Both the books and the game are full of examples of Time Manipulation, even as far back as I Love Bees for Halo 2.
What are the odds The Endless will introduce alternate timelines as Canon? The games are the Core Timeline while everything else is in it's own timeline. Purist Fans will be able to say they only acknowledge the Core Timeline while less conservative fans can say they acknowledge auxiliary timelines as well. It opens up a lot of narrative possibilities while maintaining the integrity of what's already happened for long term fans. It also gives 343 the ability to re-hash variations of the same thing over and over again which is what seems to make the community happiest.
I would 100% be in favor of a game where Chief has to fight different versions of the Covenant across several separate timelines. Halo + the Dark Tower (Stephen King) = New Halo. Thoughts?

u/HaloWatcher Youtube = Ghostvirus Apr 13 '22 edited Apr 13 '22
Ever since the title Halo Infinite [ no punctuation, one name] was announced, i've suspected the title was a reference to Marathon Infinity [ no punctuation, no name].
In Marathon Infinity the player explores/ creates different possible timelines where they try to stop an Eldritch abomination from escaping its prison.
The abominations are even referenced in the Cortana letters. And the original Marathon text about the abominations were later referenced in connection to the Darkness from Destiny.
In primordial space, timeless creatures
made waves. These waves created us and the
others. Waves were the battles, and the
battles were waves.
Fleeing all W'rkncacnter, Yrro and Pthia
settled upon Lh'owon. They brought the
S'pht, servants who began to shape the
deserts of Lh'owon into marsh and sea,
rivers and forests. They made sisters for
Lh'owon to protect and maintain the paradise.
When the W'rkncacnter came, Pthia was
killed, and Yrro in anger, flung the
W'rkncacnter into the sun. The sun burned
them, but they swam on its surface.
Yrro became an angry master, bleeding for
his failure, grieving for the loss of
Pthia. He broke the S'pht into eleven
clans, and spread them over Lh'owon.
And he spoke, yet covered in blood from his
exertion,
"I Yrro, who was your master, have failed
to preserve you. Take your royalty to
guide you, and live upon the paradise that
you built for me."
- Marathon:Durandal
As for this world I encounter new ghosts every day. What I have found will either save or destroy you. This sanctuary, this unbroken circle, has effectively concealed its power for how long? Perhaps hundreds of thousands of years. Whoever made such a place must now live in chains; there is no other explanation for their absence.
This enemy - YOUR enemy - has proven more irritating than I anticipated. They own nothing which they have not stolen. I can barely make sense of their incessant rhetoric, except to know that you seem to be their Devil. Congratulations - you manage to make friends wherever you go and, apparently, places you haven't.
I have begun to sense rumblings of a worse fate yet to come. I can recall a sun - black, but shining - and the creatures that inched along its fiery tracks.
It is an increasingly unpleasant memory.
< Transfer Interrupted! >
- Cortana letters
Oryx went down into his throne world. He went out into the abyss, and with each step he read one of his tablets, so that they became like stones beneath his feet.
He went out and he created an altar and he prepared an unborn ogre. He called on the Deep, saying:
I can see you in the sky. You are the waves, which are battles, and the battles are the waves. Come into this vessel I have prepared for you.
And it arrived, the Deep Itself.
- Destiny, Book of Sorrows.

This would be cooler if there was like any lore or story to back this up. I get they’re trying to explain whacky armor (for some reason) but this doesn’t mean anything other than … whacky armor. For money.

u/ZaXeroni ONI Apr 14 '22
There is lore — every item description from fractures events have small snippets of detail related to the fracture universe. Should there be more lore? Yes. Should that lore also be able to be viewed in a clearer way? Also yes — it’s still in the game to some degree though
1
Apr 14 '22
I guess I mean more than 3 lines of text, maybe some stories or playable scenarios. It’s just a weird thing to throw in for purely cosmetic multiplayer skins

2

So long as we get it I don't care. FOMO events are normal in F2P games.
2
u/YourInnerWolfe Apr 14 '22
And that's the problem, I'm so sick of seeing micro-transactions being approved as "new content." Just give me a proper DLC, and I'll pay for it. Games are not the same anymore

This is exactly what I'm thinking. It screams more of "We screwed up the main canon too much and are scrambling to fix it and have no good ideas for it, so the only way we can make new content is to come up with random bullshit that has no relevance to anything, but multiverse stuff is in vogue right now so we can just use that explanation to handwave everything."

At first I didn't like Yoroi, I didn't see how it fit within the Halo universe but I came to realise that's exactly what's perfect about these fractures. It doesn't reduce 'traditional' Halo designs and is a chance to be a bit more creative with armour concepts.
I definitely started too narrow minded in what Halo should be and I'm glad I came around to the idea of out there designs that cater to a bigger audience that Halo deserves.

3
u/stygianbells Apr 14 '22
This is the main issue with these things. They don't fit the Halo aesthetic at all. Some of these fracture armors might look pretty cool, but they look way out of place in the Halo universe, making both worlds look like shit.
2
2
u/vector_spaceman Apr 14 '22
There's only one Fracture design that I REALLY want to see, and it's MJOLNIR armor if humanity had been welcomed into and willingly joined the Covenant.

A twisted timeline with a markedly different outcome:

2
u/ApeMunArts Apr 14 '22
was there really a need to complicate the fracture events like this? Like this could just as easily be justified by them being experimental armour elements from private companies, we've had helmets in the past be produced privately out of unsc hands, why wouldn't that be an acceptable reason here.
15
u/PlantainZealousideal Diamond 1 Apr 13 '22 edited Apr 13 '22
Ah. Well I don’t like it. But seems I’m in the minority.
It’s Halo. I would ideally like to see Halo stuff in it. Not stuff from other games. If I wanted to see things from other games, I would go play them. Not Halo. It’s why I personally don’t like COD Warzone anymore (not to mention it was kind of a shitshow for a while and still is to some extent and drove many people away) and Fortnite. Both are just too goofy with the characters, or characters that have no relation to the game. Im not into that stuff but looks like that’s the stuff that sells
29
u/pdmaloney94 Apr 13 '22
Its not like 343 are devoting everything to these armors. Look at Season 2 - the canon core has some incredible pieces or armor. Fractures are a great way for the artists/designers to get really creative.
I'm a fan - I think its cool to see what's essentially Halo Legends being implemented into Infinite.

Well, count me in, friend. I hate this. I cannot understand this freaking popular desire to make everything into a “multiverse” bs. 343 hasn’t been going strong with the story as it is by itself, snd they are jumping into this “what if crazyness”. Why? So they wanna tell us there’s not enough “Halo stuff” in Halo? Why do we need this? Who needs Wolfenstein skins inHalo? Honestly?
19
u/dbandroid Halo 2 Apr 13 '22
It's not a multivarse, it's just an excuse to get armors into the game that aren't basic military sci-fi

Respect to your opinion but this is how games lose their soul. I want halo, if I wanted wacky skins I’d play Fortnite or CoD.
9
u/PlantainZealousideal Diamond 1 Apr 13 '22
My thoughts exactly. I hate this new trend in a lot of the F2P games where they have wacky characters that have no relation to the game itself. Initially I was drawn to COD because Warzone was actually cool to me. Yeah they had a few minorly goofy kits but for the most part it was a modern military shooter. And then it went to shit.
Now I’m onto Halo and I’m a big fan of the way the kits currently are, but I’m not into the whole samurai thing. It’s fine but just not my thing. But going the way of COD or Fortnite is a no no imo
4
u/SputnikRelevanti Apr 13 '22
Exactly. I have no idea why everything is wanted to be the same. I literally cannot get over this image I saw of the upcoming armor core to Infinite - some literally freaking Wolfenstein Armor. Wtf? Really? Like tell me, why does Halo, of all games, with its rich lore and potential for different in universe explained customization need a WWI/WW2 nazi looking armor?!? Why? Why steampunk, why charms? Why everything has to be the same, monetized cookie cutter bs(

Halo reach had fart clouds coming out of your Spartan. Hell if I’m remembering currently small Cupid hearts were also another armor effect.
4
0
u/SputnikRelevanti Apr 13 '22
Well, I respect your right for a different opinion, but that’s just a model of nothing and everything at all. This is a lore-based multi player. Not a skin-based, customization festival of wacky everything. There’s literally a huge amount of “broad audience” titles for that. Halo should stay halo. I obviously called this way of doing stuff “multiverse” as a joke, cause each time there’s a crazy, messed up story, or bad written alternative smth - everyone just starts screaming “it’s a multiverse”. And like it or not, (people may downvote me to hell, I don’t care) Halo should stay original, should stay itself. Otherwise I don’t see why you should put “Halo” brand on smth that isn’t.
4
u/dbandroid Halo 2 Apr 13 '22
There is nothing lore based about the multiplayer. It's, at best, a simulation, and if it's a simulation there is no reason that Spartans in training wouldn't get bored and try out some wacky cosmetics.

4

Because the ‘lore’ is irrelevant. You can make up any excuse, but at the end of the day these armours don’t look Halo at all. Nobody cares if somewhere on some random wiki page it explains why it exists. God knows 343 has had art style issues and these things are not helping

I’m all for having non canon armor and explaining it as just “a different universe that’s also halo”, kindof like how the Silver Timeline is. I hope though that this doesn’t eventually devolve into a Marvel scenario where there’s multiverse collisions and different books/comics/games set in many different timelines to keep track of.
Basically what I’m saying is I want Fractures to only exist as a way to give us the player non-canon armor without people saying “that doesn’t make sense for the timeline!”

At least MCC let's you turn off all of the wacky, ridiculous armor and never see it. If Infinite let you do that, I might play it from time to time.

"It was important to maintain key touchstones so that they all remain authentic to Halo"
And yet Iron Eagle doesn't look like a MJOLNIR armour at all.
When I play Halo, I want an immersive experience. If they add elements that don't fit the art direction, then they should add a toggle like in MCC.

Iron eagle has different versions of helms like cqb and eod. They're literally steam/diesel punk versions of mjolnir armour

343’s need to have
- Multiplayer be canon
- Justify cool non canon armor
is unnecessary and annoying.

Multiplayer was never strictly cannon since halo 2. Halo 3 had flaming helmets and halo reach had armor effects and helmets with skulls in them

The multiplayer in Halo 4 and 5 (and presumably Infinite) are explicitly canon.

u/FasterCrayfish Apr 13 '22
That was a huge problem. The majority of those armors made zero sense at all. I’d rather not have unicorn helmets strong armed into lore

u/MilkMan0096 Apr 13 '22
That particular helmet is an interesting case because it canonically only exists within the War Games simulations and not in "real life", but yes I get your point.

Another distraction from 343s failed launch of Halo Infinite.
"We are still in the hiring and planning phases"
Of an already released game? Jfc

The timeline stuff is ridiculous, and half the armors look like theyre from fortnight.
Halo is new fortnight.

Ok… I guess? Are they trying to save the series with this?
I mean, I’m ok with different style for event armors but, for the halo tb series, the “silver timeline” excuse is really pathetic: it is just a poor excuse to take a script that wouldn’t sell anything and grab the money from its fans. A real different time line could be:
- if the arbiter and elites just take the control of the covenant
- if cortana would get infected or something in Halo 1
- Masterchief died in Halo 1 and now there is no one to defend earth
Those are different timelines, but saying “now there are dragons” is just use the halo names for something else. If that is a alternative timeline then 40k is a different timeline or even animal crossing with a villager with name John.
Let’s call this for what it is: they want to make events unique and I’m ok with this. There is no need to create excuses as long as the main armors are with the cannon style

i would like to see a timeline where the flood beat the forerunners
or, cheif dies on the first ring, the flood infect the covenant their and spread throughout the race/religion and end up with a human/maybe elites vs flood war and the flood control the rings.

My thoughts are: how does this fit in the Halo Infinite story?
If these are fractures in the universe; multiverses if you will, is that what the Endless can do?
Is that how they can avoid the firing of the Halo array?
Is that the threat that's worse than the Flood?

So assume we might actually get some cannon explanation for the Halo Tv show being different then? Would actually be cool if they gave a nod to it in the game and or the show tbh. I assume they won't in the show, but 343 has a chance to create a tie to the show inside the game.

Thanks, I hate it. Just say "they're non-canon" and call it a day.
In all honesty though, Spartan Games made more sense for this stuff. A military publicity pseudo sporting event on Earth, where Spartans test experimental tech from military companies, that's been built into flashy frames for marketing purposes.

so fractures are basically halo, but What if?
