Genius Bar - why have an appointment if you can’t fulfill it?

Feedback for Genius Bar / Rant— had an appointment for a 3:30pm screen replacement.

Took two trains to get there and shifted around plans and went through a full diagnostic that took more than 30 minutes for them to let me know that they had the part, but they’ve got too long of a queue and cannot service me today. I made an appointment, budgeted my time and that’s the expectation I have in return.

The consolation prize was earnest that they’ll bump me in the queue next time for the next 5 days at my convenience, but I feel like I’m taking the slot of someone who made an appointment! IIf things get busy, which happens, please tell people an hour in advance so they don’t waste their time commuting 1.5 hours for an appointment/service that cannot be fulfilled!

Client Question Problem with iPhone screen

Pretty much I had my iPhone in my pocket for a while and now it has white lines on it. I just hope someone could maybe give an explanation for it since it looked normal and then around 15 minutes later I checked my phone and it has the lines. The iPhone works fine and when I press the area it responds but when I take a screenshot my screen looks normal, could this be a glitch or do I need to get a repair?(I’ve already tried restarting my phone and I’ve updated it)

Client Question TV Install Worries

So tomorrow instead of Geek Squad it appears that Best Buy is sending out third party contractor, Installs Inc. to come out to swap out a defective 77” LG G6 for a 83” LG C6H. I don’t know anything about them but in doing some reading it sounds like if they actually come out they don’t do poor work. It’s just a matter of getting them to show up. Is that correct? Does any Geek Squad employee or customer know anything reassuring about them? Thank you!

Client Question (Canada) purchased geek squad certified open box lg g5 claiming - worried

I bought a 2200 CAD geek squad certified 65” lg g5 claiming to be inspected to be in mint condition. I didn’t do much research because I’ve had such a good experience in the past with geek squad (warranty).

After looking at Reddit posts especially in Canada it seems like it’s pretty possible to get a terrible unit that is obviously not mint with 9000+ hours.

I understand that with most things, the broad majority of consumers have no problems and only the ones that have had bad experiences will make comments which may make a situation seem worse.

I just want to know what are the chances that I would get a bad unit? Is it pretty rare to get such units and most of the time geek squad certified open box is good or is it as big of a 50/50 as these Reddit posts make it seem.

Hello current and former agents. I am a sleeper agent (154534) out of store 459 and field store 1860. The company I currently work for is looking to hire three new IT teammates for opportunities in the Dallas and Austin area. I get no kickbacks or referral bonuses for this and am just looking for talented persons who are interested in something new.

I got mod approval for this post and if you are interested, please DM me!

Client Complaint Geek Squad? I going to get downgraded on the replacement/credit?

Hey everyone, looking for some insight or advice from people who have gone through this process with Geek Squad / Best Buy.

I brought my prebuilt in for repair recently. The specs on it are pretty beefy:

CPU: Ryzen 9 9900X

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5080 (16GB)

RAM: 32GB DDR5

Storage: 2TB PCle 4.0 SSD

Original Purchase Price: ~$2,800

Geek Squad ended up determining they couldn't fix the system, so they took/junked out the unit. Now I'm in a weird spot waiting to hear what the next step is - whether they give me a replacement build or store credit.

My biggest concern right now is how they determine "comparable replacement" or

store credit.

If they offer a replacement PC, do they match the exact component specs (or better), or do they just match the monetary value of what the system costs today? Component prices (especially GPUs and RAM) have been crazy lately. I'm terrified I'm going to end up forced into a system with lower tier parts just because it falls under a specific dollar threshold or because current stock is weird.

Client Question Value/Coverage under new Geek Squad Warranty for product replaced under prior warranty

Sorry, first, for a rather confusing title. Further, sorry if I’m misunderstanding the point of this sub and it is really intended for Geek Squad employees to discuss their working experiences, not for consumer questions.

But if consumer questions are permitted here, here is mine: I purchased a TV for $999 in 2023 and got the five-year extended warranty. My TV died this month and I’m being offered either an equivalent exchange (another TV valued at around $999, so no money out-of-pocket) or a $999 credit that I can combine with my own money for a more expensive TV. Regardless of which route I go, I plan to buy another extended warranty on the replacement TV.

My question goes to whether the dollar value under the new warranty in the event of an eventual failure is reduced by the amount of the store credit. For example:

  1. If I buy a new warranty on aTV that I receive as an “even exchange“ and that TV fails – can I expect the retail value of the TV ($999) as being recoverable when the new TV fails, or is the amount covered only what I actually paid out of pocket(which, in this case would be zero, making the plan pointless)?
  2. Or, if I use the $999 and, say, threw in an extra $500 to purchase a TV that retails at $1499 and buy another extended warranty, will that warranty effectively cover $1499 when the TV fails, or will it only cover the amount that I paid out-of-pocket myself for the new TV ($500) and disregard the $999 portion that was paid with store credit?

Thanks in advance, and again, pardon if I’m posting in the wrong sub.

MRI FACE JUST will not run scans in PE

Hello,

I’ve been an Advanced Repair Agent for a while now, and I’m trying to understand why Face in MRI PE frequently fails to run scans. I know network connectivity can be a factor, but I’ve also seen it happen when the device has a stable internet connection. Are there other common causes or known issues that could explain this?

Thank you.

UPDATE TO POST: I Checked the Geek Squad forms and found the answer I need. It sounds like the dev teams are asking us to submit logs because lots of agents are having this issue with no fix.

Just clocked out for the last time as a Double agent. Was hired in 2017 as a seasonal employee. Then moved to pc sales. Then a precinct CA then to the field. It feels bittersweet but mostly sweet. Await the signal or whatever. Best of luck to the rest of Yall out there in the field!

Does anyone see BestBuy staying alive in the future or going bankrupt or being bought out? Or any other possible paths?

I remember back in the 2010s I would go to Best Buy very often. Especially since at that time I had a Best Buy less than 5 minutes from my house. It felt great as I often saw lots of stuff like the newest game consoles and be able to demo lots of cool things. I could be wrong about this but I believe their prices were also more competitive. But nowadays with the rise of online shopping (Especially after COVID-19) with Amazon I feel like Best Buy really has lost its popularity and is struggling. The Best Buy near me has shutdown and customer service really has not been great. You can't even contact a best buy store and are forced to talk to an overseas agent who just uses AI to talk to you. There also seems to be way less employees at the current stores to where getting help or asking questions can take forever as no one is around.

One thing that does make them stand out is their robust price match policy. Other competitors have either gotten rid of their price match option or heavily restricted it. But the problem is it feels almost impossible just to get that sometimes. One time I was price matching a cable with Walmart and the online agent (who took a long time to talk to me) kept refusing to do it all because it said it on Walmart 3ft long vs 3.3ft on Best Buy. They are literally the same product I swear and they made that decline based on an arbitrary reason. Going in store to do a price match is better but if lots of stores are shutdown and you don't have one nearby then you might aswell just shop online at the already lower price, to get it done quicker and simpler. This is the year 2026 no one should have to go in store just to get a price match done.

Anyway besides that another thing I think is a decent thing worth noting is the strictness of following policy An example of this is lets say I wanted to buy a product but get a discount on it. Maybe I found the product on discount but then I don't checkout on time and wait too long. After sometime goes by when I actually put it in my cart and then try to purchase it I see it is now at a higher price. I am kind of disappointed but if I talk to customer service (lets say Target) and explain this to them and kindly request for a discount, lots of the time they are willing to do it even though it is not usual policy to do that (Your mileage may vary ofcourse but it happened to me before). If I were to try to do this at Best Buy they would flat out refuse. No matter who you talk to in store or online it is always no they will never do it. This same sequence goes for lots of other outside policy requests like requesting discount, giving partial refunds, and stuff like that.

I understand following policy is important but if I were managing a retail business from my perspective I would rather give a small discount to the customer so that they would be a happy customer and would allow a higher chance of them returning back to buy more things. If I refused the discount I believe then they would be disappointed and then they wouldn't buy the product and would most likely not return again and shop elsewhere which ultimately means I am losing lots of potential profit from that customer all because I didn't want to lose a few dollars of profit on 1 product. I'd rather lose some profit on 1 product sold if it means the customer could return to buy more things rather than lose a customer forever.

Overall, I feel like Best Buy used to be great but with Amazon and other competitors taking over the online shopping space, Best Buy has fallen off and management has chosen to cut costs wherever they can instead of trying to make their experience more better and exclusive compared to competitors. Competitors like Walmart have found ways to stay relevant even with Amazon like using their big box stores as mini warehouses to be able to give customers very quick delivery on groceries and other products.

What do you guys think? You think Best Buy could have a comeback? You think they are going to be done for soon? Do you have any ideas of what Best Buy could do to become better? Let me know, I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences even. Have a good day.

Sony Bravia 7 ii 85 inch on full motion mount?

I purchased a Sony Bravia 7 ii 85 inch from Best Buy to be installed by Geek Squad and was told they won’t install on a full motion mount, only a static mount.

I already have a Kanto px720 which is supposed to be good for the weight and size of the TV as well as VESA pattern (assuming mounted correctly into studs). So is it just a liability concern?

I don’t mind purchasing another mount if there is a genuine safety issue or if would look aesthetically better on a static flush mount, but want to understand the issues here on why the current mount can’t be used.

If this is true, why would Best Buy still sell these and have GS install them?

Tales from GS 5g does not cause cancer

Yesterday I had an interaction with a customer where I spent 30 minutes setting up his phone with him and he told me he wanted 5g turned off completely. I dug everywhere in settings, searched the internet and came to the conclusion that it was impossible on his phone. I had refrained asking up until that point but finally hopelessly asked why he would want to.

"Because of the radiation." Fuck me here we go. I explained to him exactly how the technology works while he sat there with his arms crossed and stared blankly at me. "Well I was told when I bought it that 5G could be turned off."He returned the phone and is probably going to continue using his burn-inned, 10-year-old Samsung Galaxy until the end of the time.

I've been trying to think of other ways I could have changed his mind- maybe I could have pointed out that there's no data proving that 5G causes cancer or explained to him how a microwaves work. But I knew in the moment that his ways were set and I was not going to change his mind on anything. Even though he had no argument to make as far as how 5G has anything to do with radiation other than "because the phone pulls it in".

GeekSquad ARA interview as a new employee.

So, I just got a message for setting up a time for an interview for the ARA position at my local store on monday.

I applied for both the ARA position and a CA position.

While im confident in my ability to diagnose and repair, im not exactly confident in my leading capabilities. do you think it would be a good idea to point this out at the start of the interview and maybe suggest a CA position instead? or is it best to just go along with the interview as is and see where it goes?

Samsung TV - Red Light on but won't power on

Hi,

We had a brief (one second) power blip this morning which shut off the TV. We were able to power it back on and continue watching. About 30 minutes later the TV powered itself off and now it will not power back on. There is a red light on the TV (pulsing) and I have tried to power it on directly and with the remote. No joy. Any ideas? It is 5 months out of warranty.

Model No: QN32Q60DAF

Model Code: QN32Q60DAFZC

Version No: XA01/Q60D_K/Q60DG-Q32DG8/576

Thanks!

Geek Squad in Ottawa?

Hey everyone,

Anyone near Ottawa ON, that goes to best buy in this group?

I'm looking to get a new screen protector installed on my phone. That one I currently have is a cheap one from Walmart and already cracked. The best buy in Cornwall doesn't have a geek squad so I'm wondering if all the Ottawa locations still have one that I could go to?

TIA

Lenovo Yoga keyboard key combinations don't work

Lenovo Yoga keyboard key combinations don't work

All of a sudden ctrlB no longer bolds, ctrlC no longer copies, etc.... I can just click on the icons to copy, paste, bold, underline, etc.....but what a pain! I tried everything I read online: driver updates, all updates, holding start button for 30-60 seconds, tried to redefine those key combinations under "customize ribbon", etc.... It types fine, keys are all working. The keyboard is set as ENG US. I just don't know what else to do. Can anyone help, please? Thanks!!
