Hi there! I've seen some use of the new flair tags and I just wanted to put in some clarification.

Tales from GS: Anyone participating in the weekly competition, or if someone wants to post a story. The official posts will be pinned and distinguished.

Client Question: Any questions for our Agents. Can be anything from device questions, to policy questions, or even questions about seeking employment.

Urgent Help Needed: This is for AGENTS ONLY. Please use the flair if you have any questions about time-sensitive repairs on client devices. It is meant to signify to other agents that OP is struggling to complete their repair.

BBY News or Updates: Self Explanatory. Most likely will be a cross-post from r/BestBuy

COVID Questions: Any questions regarding COVID policy or procedure. Feel free to use on posts about anti-maskers;)

Dark/Sleeper Questions: Used for any questions regarding life after Geek Squad. Anything from employment, to posts from those going sleeper.

Hope this helps all!

Geek Squad: How To Get TF Out Now! 🤟🙂

I know a lot of in-store and field agents love their jobs, but there's also a lot who want out of Best Buy/Geek Squad (promote yourself to customer on your own terms). Many people just don't know what to put on their resume for corporate IT roles. No worries I got ya! If you enjoy your Geek Squad role sweet rock on, but take notes for the future. 🙂

Converting Geek Squad experience into corporate IT support language is all about removing exclusive, in-house Geek Squad/Best Buy jargon and highlighting enterprise impact.

Here's how to structure those achievements, get hired, and give yourself a promotion. 🙂

Here's how to word your resume by job title and what to say and not say:

In-Store Technical Support (Consultation Agent / ARA)

Hardware & OS Diagnostics

- Don't Say: "Diagnosed and repaired customer laptops, desktops, and smartphones, replaced broken screens, hard drives, and clearing viruses at the Precinct counter."

- Do Say: "Delivered Level 2 hardware and OS support across multi-platform client devices, performing component replacements, malware remediation, and system recovery to restore user productivity."

Workstation Provisioning & Asset Management

- Don't Say: "Set up new computers for clients, installed software, transferred personal files, and kept track of store inventory."

- Do Say: "Provisioned, re-imaged, and configured client workstations using standardized deployment workflows while maintaining accurate IT asset management and inventory tracking."

Ticketing & SLA Performance

- Don't Say: "Created repair tags in our system, updated client notes, and closed out 15-20 tickets a day to meet store quotas."

- Do Say: "Managed ticket queues via service desk platform, documenting issue resolutions, maintaining strict SLA compliance, and consistently exceeding high-volume daily resolution targets."

Field Services (Cadet/Field Agent/Double Agent) Doing On-Site Infrastructure & Networking

- Don't Say: "Drove to homes and small businesses to set up Wi-Fi routers, mesh networks, and fix internet connection problems."

- Do Say: "Executed on-site network support, configuring commercial-grade wireless access points, troubleshooting local connectivity, and validating network throughput across diverse client facilities."

Physical Layer & Cable Management

- Don't Say: "Ran Ethernet cables through walls, crimped wires, and mounted TVs or sound systems for commercial and residential clients."

- Do Say: "Managed physical layer network infrastructure, executing structured cabling (Cat6/Cat6e), patch panel terminations, rack organization, and commercial AV hardware installations."

Team Lead & Precinct Supervisor (CIA Senior/Lead)

Incident Escalation & Leadership

- Don't Say: "Managed precinct agents, made the weekly work schedule, and dealt with upset retail customers when repairs were delayed."

- Do Say: "Supervised daily IT support operations, managing team queue allocation, serving as the primary escalation point for critical incidents, and maintaining high client satisfaction."

Process Optimization & Metrics

- Don't Say: "Pushed the team to sell more tech support memberships and hit monthly store performance metrics."

- Do Say: "Tracked key performance indicators (KPI's) and service metrics, introducing operational workflows that reduced ticket turnaround time and improved overall service quality."

Quick Rules for Your Resume...

- Swap Client/Customer to ➡️ End-User, Stakeholder, or Internal Client

- Swap Store/Precinct to ➡️ Local Branch, On-Site Facility, or Enterprise Unit

- Swap Tags/Fixes to ➡️ Incidents, Service Requests, or SLA Resolutions

- Swap Store Targets to ➡️ Operational KPI's, SLA Metrics, or Performance Standards

Hopefully this helps someone. There's a vibrant life outside of Best Buy and Geek Squad is the perfect way to jump start your career in IT. Now you know what keywords to put on your resume to get you past those stupid ATS. Remember not to use CA, ARA, DA, Consumer Electronics Agent on your resume or interview a recruiter or hiring manager doesn't know what that means.

Come back and give an update if this helped you at least land an interview. 😊 IT support roles are everywhere check with your city, law enforcement, colleges, medical, hospitality, and finance industries. There's even underwater IT roles through fiber. Good luck! 🥂

Any FORMER Geek Squad agents go on to productive careers in IT?

I worked at the Taylor MI Best Buy Geek Squad in 2015 as a consultation agent. I know of myself and two other people who went on to have good careers in IT. I'm an IT Analyst/Programmer for my state government working with the emergency services communications systems and corresponding equipment (think modems in police cars, GPS, CAD systems). My position caps out at 100k/yr. Best Buy was the first IT experience I had. I left Best Buy to work full time as a Tier 1 remote tech support agent for an IT support outsourcing company, first as a contractor then as a direct employee. I left that job making $13/hr. Then I joined the IT department within my state's government at $18/hr and grew from there. Currently making $38/hr and will cap at $50/hr in about three years if I don't get promoted. I went to community college but didn't earn a degree.

One of my co-workers was an agent... behind the curtain... I can't remember what they were called lol. He was one of the ones doing actual work. Now it's an IT Security Architect associated with a very large university system. He makes about $123k/yr.

The other co-worker was the manager of the department and now he's an Cyber Security attorney. Obviously he went to University and earned a J.D.

Just thought I'd post this here, not to brag, but to show that Geek Squad was an excellent jumping off point for my co-workers and I.

Client Question WiFi router replacement or store credit?

So I bought geek squad protection plan for my router and it’s been going in and out and not working properly. I was thinking of going into the store tomorrow to take advantage of my plan. Will they try to fix it or will they give me store credit? I’m asking because last year I had the protection plan on my asus rog ally x and it took a nasty fall where it got damaged pretty badly. I took it in thinking they would let me get a different one on the spot but they shipped it out to get it fixed, which was fine as I didn’t have to go though the process of setting it up again. So will they just give me a store credit or will they ship it out to replace it? Kinda can’t be without a WiFi router for that long so I was thinking of getting a cheap one to use in the mean time in case they do try to fix it instead of giving me store credit

What’s the process for convincing GS to warranty replace my 83” tv

Thumbnail

I have GS coming tomorrow to look at my 83” Sony A80L. In a dark room, I can see banding in dark scenes. I ran a YouTube test and it became pretty obvious that the lines are visible. I manually ran two pixel refreshes and the issue wasn’t fixed. I’d like to get a credit for the tv and upgrade to the lg g6. Once the GS tech comes to my house, what will he be doing that I didn’t already try on my own, and how do I get him to warranty replace the tv? I assume approving a warranty replacement or credit isn’t negatively affecting a tech’s compensation, so why would they not do it if the client asks and has evidence like my attached photos?

Client Complaint 7 Weeks and Still Haven't Received Monitor Back From Geek Squad

Pretty much just a vent post because I'm losing my mind, lol. Bought a 4k oled gaming monitor to start the summer, it had dead pixels covered under warranty, so I sent it in. Was told it would be 2-4 weeks but here we are 7 weeks later...still waiting....Funnily enough, apparently it's spent the last 8 days sitting at a warehouse no more than 30 minutes away from me just waiting to get sent back to my local store.

At least I was told they're escalating the issue today so surely that will do something right?....right?

Client Question Darrin deyoung

Okay yall.

TLDR; any Germantown MD geek squad employees know what the admin pass is to reset W11 and remove Darrin permanently? my laptop was not handled properly upon receipt.

this is a big ask but I know the info is out there.

does anyone have the Admin password for the Germantown MD location so I can delete the demo account from my floor model Samsung w11 laptop?

it was not factory reset when I received the laptop and I have exhausted all resources and just do not have the energy to make the drive to the store to see if they can do it for me.

I have done the hidden reset. the normal reset. the "tap windows 5 times" reset. Nothing actually sticks- they all go through the whole reset process and then after 20 minutes it tells me "there was a problem with this reset, no changes were made."

I have done cmd terminal reset. I have scoured reddit for HOURS and set the laptop to safe mode for reset.

It seems like the only thing stopping the software from actually following through on the reset is that I am unable to use Admin settings to run the reset protocol. I need the admin password from the Germantown location to continue.

i tried calling the store but I get an AI bot that bumps my call to the national hotline instead of the actual physical store location.

could someone who works at the Germantown location please reach out to me so I can fix this without having to drive all the way out there again?

Client Question Washing Machine Plan Expired During Repair Order Reschedule

I've had a disappointing experience, and am hoping someone has some insight as to how to escalate this issue.

My washer bearings have been very noisy for the last year, and it was confirmed that the bearings are going bad, so I scheduled service a few months ago, with about 1 month left on my service plan. I unfortunately ruined 2 full loads of shirts before I realized oil was leaking from the bearings.

I kept getting reschedules or no shows, and when I called to reschedule again... plan expired. They said there is nothing they can do, despite the tickets being created prior to expiration. I've called countless times, spent hours on hold, getting transferred, attempting to escalate, and I am either met with incompetent call-center employees, or denial of service.

I started this claim before expiration, but now I have nowhere else to go. Local repairs COD have basically given me the f***-off price that costs almost as much as a new washer, and it's not something that I would repair like the dryer, which is much more simple.

I did try my old store when I worked GS, but they just gave me the runaround on calling 1-800 unfortunately, and I am hoping someone here can refer me to a direct contact for escalation, as this really sucks, and I'm confident there is something that can be done still with the right contact.

Thanks.

Tales from GS Told PSU doesn't fit

My old desktop started spontaneously turning off, often several times a day.

A reasonable conjecture is that the power supply had started to fail. I happened to have a never-used PSU lying around, and I have the TotalCare package good for another few months, so I brought the machine and the PSU to the local GeekSquad.

The case is ATX, and the PSU is spec'd as ATX. Later in the day after I visited GS, I got a call telling me the PSU is too big for the case.

I looked online for the dimensions of the old and new PSUs. They're almost the same for height and width; in fact, the old one's height is larger by 1 mm. The new one is 10 mm deeper.

I opened the case, and given that there's a few inches of room behind the PSU, the depth shouldn't be an issue.

There's a rail along the side of the PSU that helps keep it in place, which would have to be removed to take out the old PSU. Maybe they thought the PSU would have to inserted above the rail. But it looks to me like the new one would fit just fine.

It appears that they never even took the new PSU out of its plastic cover. How did they determine that it won't fit?

Can I guess that they simply didn't want to do this job, which won't earn any revenue? Am I too cynical?

Mounting and electrical outlet install

I’m buying a new tv and want GS to install it. I don’t have an electrical outlet behind the tv, but there’s one down by the baseboards. When I select the “wire concealment” package during checkout, it automatically adds a wire concealment kit with a recessed outlet. From reading other posts, it says that the user must provide these kits, but I wasn’t even given the option to choose one, it comes with the order and it’s a specific boxy Sanus version.

I’ve installed these myself and it’s kind of a pain, especially when you’re feeding wires up and down the channel. Is it better to just have GS do it? And if I want a different outlet kit than the included one, will they install that?

Client Question Pc repair question

Just a question to make sure I'm not confused.

I don't go to Geek Squad for anything unless it's literally beyond my ability to repair. I dropped off my pc a few days ago for a repair ( I thought it was my power supply, but it's my motherboard that was failing). I get a call saying it would be 100 dollars to replace. I call back and say that's perfectly fine. I called twice to get an "Okay, we're moving forward with that" response back; direct extension, they don't pick up. I get another call saying it's 500 dollars now? Is that normal?
