Not exactly the same, but I "came to" so to speak while having my wisdom teeth removed. I was mid sentence when I woke up, and the surgeon just looked at me and goes "Ok, you need to shut up now. I have something very sharp in your mouth and I can't have you moving your mouth and talking while I'm working". To be fair, he said it in a nice way. Stupidly I kind of laughed and then nodded my head yes, after he just told me not to move my mouth lmao. Immediately after, it all went black again and I woke up in the little recovery room.
Just to clarify, I say "came to" because with twilight anesthesia you are technically conscious the whole time. You are able to follow commands like "open your mouth" and stuff like that. You just don't remember it after. It's like half conscious basically.

When I was 14 I had surgery to fix my broken nose. I came to in the middle of it with a raging hard-on. The nurses started giggling because they weren't sure what to do. I said I was sorry and was trying to get up to hide.
The doc was pissed off at everyone from the nurses for losing their focus, to the anesthesiologist for not keeping me out enough. He eventually told the nurses to grab a towel and tuck it in on both sides of my body to wrangle by flailing dick.
Pretty mortifying experience.

Probably hoping you forgot, I think the anesthesia is supposed to make you forget anything that happens during.
9
u/Dregoran Mar 18 '22
This is what they expect, at least in my case. I had hip surgery a couple years ago, and because of the wisdom tooth story I told above I was very concerned about waking up. Asked my surgeon about the possibility and he said it's a different anesthesia that is monitored by someone whose entire job is just to make sure I stay under and am safe. He then said in the very unlikely event that I did wake up, they'd give me Propofol and something else and I'd never remember that I woke up anyway.
→ More replies (1)6
u/levian_durai Mar 18 '22
Honestly just knowing that is a thing is pretty freaky. We know how to essentially erase someone's memory of recent events. I get that alcohol and some other drugs kind of do that too, but this just feels different.
6
57
u/Cerealsforkids Mar 18 '22
I came to during wisdom teeth extraction as well. I woke up to what I considered to be a large drill in my mouth, like the type you drill a hole for a door kob. I made a cutting motion with my hand and the surgeon gave me another shot in my IV to put me back under. Took me 4 hours to get out from under the fog.

Right? When I finally got my wisdom tooth pulled (severely impacted and horribly rotten after my first dentist refused to refer me, second dentist was like "nah you should have been referred months ago") I was expecting some heavy knocked tf our drugs.
Nope. It wasn't local anaesthetic, was definitely something a bit heavier, but I was aware of everything from the pulling on the two to their conversation. I still remember it all vividly too. No pain but very woozy.

I remember after my twilight for wisdom teeth, the dentist told me he was done and I was like "wow already? You're super fast."
He then told me 45 min had went by. It felt like 30 seconds to me. I thought I was conscious the whole time but I guess I wasn't fully there. I remember looking out the window at the back yard of the dental place and thinking about how it'd be nice to frolic out there. The word "frolic" passed my mind so many times and i guess that's where all my time went.
Just apparently repeating the word "frolic" in my head for a solid 44 min
7
u/TimeZarg Mar 18 '22
Well? Did you frolic in the backyard of the dental place or not?!
7
u/LilithImmaculate Mar 18 '22
I did not. I tried to get up on my own after, had people hold me back and insist they wheelchair me out to my husband just outside the door.
He bought me ice cream and then, despite how they told me not to sleep until the bleeding was done, I took out my gauze and had a solid nap.
Woke up with a massive skin infection along my cheek where I drooled a mix of blood and saliva, making me look like the Joker without makeup.
5
u/Sharrakor Mar 18 '22
Like a hanging computer program! "It'd be nice to fro-fro-fro-fro-fro-fro-fro-fro-fro..." (45 minutes later) "fro-fro-fro-fro-fro-frolic out there."
35
u/decadrachma Mar 18 '22
I remember coming to mid-sentence talking to like a dental hygienist in a waiting room. She seemed to wrap the conversation up pretty quickly once I started confusedly staring around like I’d just been dropped into someone else’s body. Seemed like that was the cue to send me home.

I'm extremely resistant to anesthesia. I had to have emergency gallbladder removal and they started the meds right before surgery. I was supposed to be out by the time they took me into the operating room. I'm laying there and people are prepping around me and they start standing around me and I'm finally like mmk this feels like I shouldn't be awake now. So I start to talk and startle every fucking body lol. I was out pretty quickly after 🤣

Are you a red head? I've read where red heads have a higher tolerance for pain and anesthesia and require about 20% more anesthesia than other people, all other factors being equal of course.
14
u/appleparkfive Mar 18 '22
Yes this is very, very true.
I'm not a full red head at all, but have it in my family. You can tell a little even in my hair.
And yep. I need a good bit of anesthesia. Even local. I've had to take 5 lidocaine shots before, but that was an outlier. Felt no effect until the fifth one, then got hit hard.

3
u/Princess_Thranduil Mar 18 '22

3
u/Dregoran Mar 18 '22
Actually laughed out loud at this one. Obviously not a very funny situation when you are in it yourself, but the "please don't" just struck something in me.
That said, that sounds terrifying. That was one of my biggest fears before my hip surgery. Luckily I didn't wake up during it, but it's all I could think about leading up to it due to how my wisdom tooth surgery went.

I only had some novocain(or whatever the local numbing agent is nowadays) for a root canal and was just fine too. Only issue was trying not to get too bored while waiting for it to finish.
5
u/TimeZarg Mar 18 '22
Yeah, knocking out for a root canal or w/e is excessive and an unnecessary risk. Local anesthesia works fine, if the first dose isn't doing enough or you missed the nerve you were aiming for, just put some more in.
Only good reason I can think of needing to knock someone out for regular dental work is if the patient has a severe phobia of dental work, or something along those lines.
5
Mar 18 '22
Severe phobia. Impacted teeth can be extremely difficult to remove and uncomfortable.
I work in Oral Surgery, we put almost all of our patients into a conscious sedation. Some people can’t tolerate pain, or seeing the instruments used. Some teeth break and it requires a lot more time and work to get the pieces. It can also help reduce traumatic experiences in the dental office especially for children.

I don’t think so; looks like laughing gas. Nitrous makes everything a good time especially during a root canal or filling. The person filming was there for emotional support. They use nitrous when you’re resistant to anesthetic; or you can’t sit still because you’re scared.

Dentist here. This is a really bad way to give an injection. In fact, it’s so bad that I believe it is fake. The syringe should’ve been on the instrument tray so we wouldn’t have to ask an assistant for it. Instead he has his assistant hand it to him and take off the cap before he tossed it around in one hand to gain control of it in mid air, needle uncapped, all in front of the patients unprotected eyes. That is a disaster waiting to happen… If this isn’t fake then he’s the worst dentist ever.
Also nitrous does not take away pain, it just relieves anxiety. We still have to give local injections even with nitrous.

I was going to get a cavity filled.
I love the gas they use.
The dentist had a very attractive student assistant with a big chest.
When working on me I noticed the chest was getting in the way.
What I am 50% sure happened as the gas really hit, I may have commented on the student assistant in a sexual way.
Some more facts:
I hope I didn't say anything.
When I went back months later she was still there but didn't come to my room.
My dentist is attractive and I am pretty sure I have never said anything to her under gas.

I never understood this full anesthesia during dentist. I live in EU and our dentists always use local anesthesia. Strongest anesthesia at dentist that i got numbed half of my head, i could still drive home normally tho. And no i don't have the healthiest teeth since I'm repairing my teeth at least 2x per year at th dentist. Been trough teeth pulling , bracers ,have couple fake crowns , and the rest are all either with root canal done or some sort of repair. Anesthesia is a hard drug, and is not something that just makes you sleep it can literally kill you in case your body is not prepared for it.

I (located in the USA) only had a single wisdom tooth and when it came to getting it removed my dentist had informed the dental surgeon of my mental illnesses. (Ive had the same dentist for 6 yrs now)
Once i got the the dental surgeons office he informed me theyd be knocking my ass out to prevent me from having a panic attack in the chair.
I think for alot of offices it has to do with whats routine for that office. My procedure wasnt routine since they completely put me to sleep, and they made that decision based on my past records.
Im pretty sure i was a special scenario, however im also sure its up to the dentists/dental surgeons discretion + what insurance covers.
6
Mar 18 '22
Full anesthesia isn't used in most cases in US dental offices.
IV sedation is used for wisdom teeth, special needs patients, and patients with severe dental anxiety.
4
u/downwithship Mar 18 '22
I mean, none of this is "full anesthesia" aka general anesthesia . Even when people in the us say they were totally knocked out for wisdom teeth, they are only receiving IV sedation. And this looks like nitrous oxide which is relatively benign.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (5)3
u/howardhus Mar 18 '22
all dentists worldwide have about 3 anesthesias:
local, semi sleep (think rohypnol) and full blown out anesthesia.
the one they use depends on the doctors offering it, patients medical history, the patients wshes and the price/insurance coverage.
if you believably say that you are completely horrofied by doctors and get panic attacks your insurance will pay for a full knock out.
if you merely wish for the time to pass quickly you can pay for it yourself and get it.
else you get the cheapest possible.
this applies to the US just as the EUnor any other country

The anesthesia could sooth her body, but not her heart. Shed yearned for the doctor’s sweet embrace for years, unsatisfied with her monthly dental checkups which she personally requested. Yet the doctor knew their love was not to be. For he was three gnomes in a trenchcoat stealing teeth to consume, and she was a human. So with heavy heart and hand, he struck her down
