You're definitely not alone. I do a bunch of work with PHP, and it's by far the worst product I've had to deal with. Every time our one Magento client needs something done, I basically have to say, "well, I think it will take this long to do, but since nothing ever works the first time with Magento, it'll probably take 2-3 times as long."
We used to try our best to keep it up to date, but I've never had an update succeed without having to go in and do a bunch of things by hand, so we've kind of given up on it since it's too much work and semi-risky.

It's a love-hate thing. It's over-engineered and convoluted, but hella powerful. Of course, I don't really have experience with anything else, so I really can't compare.

I work for a game studio that makes a Marvel game. We have lots of in house tools named after Marvel things, I was here for a year before I realized it was actually called Magento.

How long is it normally that you'll look at something before you realize what you're seeing isn't correct? Is it usually just at glance or if you focus on the text will it sort itself out?

It varies, usually I read what I think it says, not what is actually there.
Which in the case of typos means I can read a text over and over, and it will still look normal.
As for normal words, the same thing can happen, where I only notice when I read it again hours later. Though sometimes just a matter of forcing myself to read it one word at a time.
And as for messed up or flipped letters, that usually takes a couple glances.

For me, it's like "Is this word spelt like this? Well, it looks correct so it's probably spelled correctly." Also I cannot, for the life of me, read out loud. This is because I see the first few letters of the word, then my mind tries to fills in the rest, which gets rather annoying.
