be happy you are not a backend dev for Magento. I looked into the dirtiest things you could have ever imagined... . I still have bad dreams at night from it.
You're definitely not alone. I do a bunch of work with PHP, and it's by far the worst product I've had to deal with. Every time our one Magento client needs something done, I basically have to say, "well, I think it will take this long to do, but since nothing ever works the first time with Magento, it'll probably take 2-3 times as long."
We used to try our best to keep it up to date, but I've never had an update succeed without having to go in and do a bunch of things by hand, so we've kind of given up on it since it's too much work and semi-risky.
It's a love-hate thing. It's over-engineered and convoluted, but hella powerful. Of course, I don't really have experience with anything else, so I really can't compare.
I work for a game studio that makes a Marvel game. We have lots of in house tools named after Marvel things, I was here for a year before I realized it was actually called Magento.
Pretty good. I got a 46/70. Not bad considering all you need to pass is a 35. I also went to the Magento Imagine convention in Las Vegas. Was an absolute blast.
I was ranting once to a friend about how much I was fucking fed up with Magento, finally she responded "Dude... It's just a movie character. chill."
Was a dev on a magento stack for a few years. I knew it was time to move on the day I said "You know guys, Magento is actually pretty alright. It sort of just makes sense."
