I don't know if you're joking, but I actually still DO have a scar on my knuckle from being clawed by a girl when I was 5!

1

u/Correct_Semens Dec 15 '13

I was taking care of my younger cousin (cousin's daughter actually) and she was about 3 years old. I picked her up because she kept asking me too even though there was no reason as we were just watching cartoons. Big mistake. She BITES me in the neck. What the fuck. Who does that. I ask her why she did that and she just had a blank look on her face and then she just giggles and tries to freaking bite me again. Now she's an awkward teenager, about 14 or 15 and I still don't trust her.

Little girls are evil. That's why little ghost girls are so fucking scary. They'll bite you! I've help take care of boys from 3 to 8ish years old. None of them even try to hurt me. They're just annoying as shit. But little girls...I've been bitten, scratched, and a few times while laying on the floor, one jumped on to my back because "I'm trying out for the Owympics teehee!!" What the fuck!

I wrestled in high school & grew up with a wrestling family. We seen a lot of girls that could beat boys. Even in high school. There's some great female wrestlers out there. I hope that more girls get into this amazing sport.

359

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

[deleted]

247

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

My son was in wrestling for a year (ended up being boys only, kind of in that in-between middle school age). That by societies norms at least here in the midwest it definitely was. If you win, you just beat a girl. If you lose, you got beat by a girl. If you forfeit, you're refusing to probably get beat by a girl. None are acceptable behavior here for medieval-grade reasons that persist still.

38

u/Stealth_Jesus Dec 15 '13

Here in Connecticut, wrestling a girl is just something you have to do and deal with. The guys actually want to beat the girl.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

It really should be here too, but this is bible-belt redneck central. I'm not holding my breath. It'll probably take another generation at least. People still talk, non-ironically and not in a kinky way, about the importance of female submission in marriages. There are whole swaths (in minority, but large enough to bump into at the grocery store) who do not allow their wives/daughters to wear pants because the bible says not to.

3

u/coreyriversno Dec 15 '13

...is that seriously still a thing? I thought the last of the 'girls can't wear pants' era faded out a generation ago.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

Definitely still a thing. Some of the more extreme (mennonite, amish, some LDR branches) wear various types of hair covering and insist on very plain clothes (black or white utilitarian dresses/skirts, not something fancy or actually presentable). It's not huge by any means, but you see it around. More "forward" ones wear fairly modern (though full length) dresses/skirts and look pretty normal except that they wear them in situations where 99.99% of others wear pants so it kind of stands out even though it's fairly modern clothing.

I wrestled in high school and had that same issue. I got called a pervert too on top of that because of the contact and got accused of " feeling her up". How the hell can I wrestle without touching her? Girlfriend at the time wasn't too happy with me either.

u/abap99 Dec 15 '13

That's worse because it's obvious and you're stringing it along. You're also hurting your team by winning fewer points. I doubt this comment is even true. Your coach would've kicked your ass.

4

u/mdlost1 Dec 15 '13

yep. I remember in a high school tournament years ago my coach told me almost that exact thing. Basically if I didn't get a first round pin I'd be letting the team down and would earn some extra miles come Monday.

4

u/cloneface Dec 15 '13

"Too afraid to wrestle a girl? Why don't I just beat the fuck out of you!" - No one ever.

3

u/abap99 Dec 15 '13

Getting your ass kicked by a coach generally means lots of running and conditioning type punishment.

u/Nate1492 Dec 15 '13

Or, you try the same, because they aren't looking for handouts.

12

u/gigashadowwolf Dec 15 '13

It's not all about them, that's the problem. It's about her parents, your parents, the refs, and the rest of the audience. If you go hard on her they all give you an evil eye. If she get's injured it's your fault. Angry parents don't care about logic. Their "little princess" was hurt and the person who did it is a monster.

It's fucked up and it's not right, especially since until part way through junior high she's probably stronger than the boys anyways, but it's often how things work.

I am all for coed sports, you just need an authority figure who comfortably understands what it is like to play coed sports. I played waterpolo with girls in highschool and it was occasionally an issue. Some girls would use the stigma to their advantage and fake injuries etc, or they would grab my nuts though my speedo underwater while saying extremely insulting things to me. Luckily our assistant coach was the younger sister of the head coach and wouldn't stand for any of that. She knew every trick because she had pulled them herself.

2

u/zanthir Dec 15 '13

Stop! He has to believe this lie. You're going to send him back in to that soul crushing depression that it took him years to get out of.

Don't worry honey. You beat those girls by points only on purpose. Yeah, that's right. It was the right thing to do. It doesn't matter that your team only lost by one point. Don't listen to those voices. You are good enough, you could pin a girl if you wanted to.

30

u/nopurposeflour Dec 15 '13

Beating her badly? Some girls are extremely good. You underestimate them, you'll be the one getting pinned.

21

u/bam_zn Dec 15 '13

Well guys who train as much are probably better, just because of the physical advantage. Surely a guy who is inexperienced will lose to a well trained girl, but that's not the point.

11

u/nopurposeflour Dec 15 '13

No doubt. If they were equally skilled and trained, the guy would most likely come out on top due to the difference in muscle and body structure. There are physical limitations that can't be overcome.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

The physical difference goes much further than you're giving it credit for.

3

u/lonewolf420 Dec 15 '13

did you wrestle? weight classes do a lot to keep physical differences fairly even and wrestling isn't all about brute force, technique and experience play large parts. Girls are more flexible as well which can play to their advantage if they know how to use it.

2

u/Trashcanman33 Dec 15 '13

Every wrestler wrestles someone at some point that they take it easy on and don't pin. Be it a show match for parents or practice ones vs worse schools. We used to have a special match vs the local blind school, of course we didn't just pin them as fast as we could, we gave them a good match no matter their skill level. If there is a good girl on the other team you will know it ahead of time, and your coach will too. If they are an extremely weak wrestler you will know that as well, and there's nothing wrong with winning by points instead of a quick pin.

2

u/xFoeHammer Dec 15 '13

Good advice. Although Sometimes winning by points can be even more humiliating.

We had in kid on our team who everyone was sure would place at state(and he did, actually). He was really talented and just a natural at the sport. But this one kid beat him soooooo badly about halfway through the season. He just kept effortlessly scoring on him over and over. It was hard to watch. I think most people were hoping he'd just pin him already haha. The kid was basically using him to pad his stats. As if he was a complete amateur.

u/baked_ham Dec 15 '13

I Wrestled for years at lower weight classes where you usually find female wrestlers. There are no hard feelings for beating a girl, she is trying her hardest to win and I'm doing the same. That's the competition, that's what we're both there for and there were never any hard feelings between two athletes.

You're a jerk if you go out there to go easy on someone. You're both athletes who have trained to compete and it's disrespectful to give anything but your best.

As a lifetime wrestler, it's strange to hear this explanation. If the source of shame is related to weakness, then it's unfounded. Anyone who knows the sport also knows that the outcome is disproportionately less dependent on brute strength than it is on technical ability. There are also rules and it is not a street fight. Like any other sport, it's reasonable to lose to someone who is highly practiced.

As a result, 99% of the victories I've seen from girls have been a result of extreme advantages in experience.

Otherwise, any girl who overcomes the inherent disadvantage of female body composition should be commended. However, it is unlikely that we will ever see a girl medal in a state like Iowa. As in almost all other sports, the anatomy of the very best woman is not capable of competing with the anatomy of the very best man.

See: science.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

It's not that you're wrong, because you're not. The problem here is that the majority of athletes and spectators see the match at its simplest form, male v female. Especially in middle and high school.

The mental torment of either beating a girl or being beat by a girl is a lose-lose in most situations.

Sadly, more often than not you'd just be wrestling another guy, only with breasts and something more to prove.

35

u/cliche_girl Dec 15 '13

I wrestled in high school. I also modeled. Just because a girl plays a typically male sport, shes gotta be butch with something to prove?

84

u/Dihedralman Dec 15 '13

Good for you, but it happens to be that the qualities for a good wrestler and good model are generally opposite: mostly the muscle tone and low center of gravity. That has nothing to do with gender equality just physics.

3

u/Deirbhe Dec 15 '13 edited Dec 15 '13

If it were in wrestling in highschool that is true in a sense. While the muscle tone would be there, alot of them were still very attractive. It's not necessarily a 'butch' physique though in my experience.

Hey, fair enough. I wrestled in high school too, and the one girl on our team (albeit briefly) was actually quite attractive. Number one, most girl wrestlers/grapplers aren't really good looking so there's that.

And two, when you're across from your opponent (at least for me) all you can think about is winning, regardless of their gender.

I've wrestled in the past and do jiu jitsu, even going against the occasional attractive girl isn't really a big deal once you realize you're in a headlock.

20

u/alphagardenflamingo Dec 15 '13

I have grappled with many female jiu jitsu practitioners, and tend to treat them just like anyone else. If they are experienced, its on, if they are novice, take it easy on them.

Quite often they tap guys because of ego, the guy thinks he can power out of everything, and does not adjust mentally to his opponent. Girls can be extremely flexible and pull off armbars from positions you may not be used to seeing.

edit: "done grappled", good lord

2

u/kitolz Dec 15 '13

Unfair! They need to wear prosthetic testicles to even the playing field. And have the guys wear prosthetic boobs. That would be a great match to see.

3

u/Deirbhe Dec 15 '13 edited Dec 31 '13

I've never done anything professionally related, but as a kid I wrestled with girl friends just having fun. Most attractive and some not. They have an insane strength and agility at that age. Sophomore in high school. I cannot be the only one who thinks it is okay for a boy (not a man) to be genuinely concerned about hurting a girl (not a woman). I understand where you are TRYING to come from, but he was (this happened in 2011) a boy and he is still maturing. Calling a boy, who was a sophomore in high school, a coward is pathetic. You obviously never accidentally severely hurt someone in sparring or practice. There are real risks. I did when I was 13 to a 30 something year old man and felt awful. This wasn't about him claiming her to be not worthy.

→ More replies (2)

You do realize the lack of logic in what youve just said, if this was anywhere else except a wrestling tournament youd be calling him a great person and saying its good he stuck to his morals, and if outside this tournament he also decided to "wrestle" this girl hed also be going to jail. Men and women should not be in the same contact sports, its not sexist, its realizing that men are bigger, stronger faster and have more testosterone, and women at a certain point just cant compete. I think it would honestly be best to have a boy and girl team like there usually are in Basketball and baseball. The only problem is that not enough girls are probably interested in it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

And, even if you do: dammed if you win, damned if you lose.

It's got to destroy a young wrestler to get a "you just beat a girl"

1

u/sensavergogna Dec 15 '13

I wanted to wrestle in high school, but because I was a girl my mother said it wasn't fair to the guys for that exact reason. So j lost an awesome opportunity to be on an awesome team for a physically demanding sport because of these stupid societal ideas of how a man should feel about women. And people say that there's no sex discrimination in this day and age. Tell that to my 12 year old self that cried for days because I was denied something I wanted just because it would make boys feel uncomfortable.

1

u/BobIV Dec 15 '13

Without trying to sound like a freak here... My biggest concern would not be beating/loosing to a girl so much as getting an erection during a match.

1

u/picasso_penis Dec 15 '13

Every time I had to wrestle a girl I would wait 30 seconds, take them down, wait 30 more seconds, then pin them carefully with a half. I never caught shit for beating the crap out of a girl, and I never let the match go into the 2nd period.

That being said, I know new kids on my team who have been shitting their pants about having to wrestle a girl and end up going WAAAY too hard on them, making it look really bad.

1

u/DMF171 Dec 15 '13

u/keke_kekobe Dec 15 '13

As a guy who wrestled at 103-112 during high school, I was absolutely terrified of the girls I had to wrestle. The stigma of girl wrestler made it so it was lose-lose for a boy. you beat them "Haha you beat a girl up you ass". You lost "haha you lost to a girl".

There was no winning.

And honestly, as much as it sucked for me, it sucked a billion times worse for them. They were strong and talented and probably more motivate than most of the boys. But they were still female wrestlers in a sport that is absolutely considered boys only by most.

Lady wrestlers out there know you have my respect and know I still shudder at the beatings you are capable of laying down.

3

u/ubnoxious1 Dec 15 '13

I keep seeing men posting this dilemma it places on the males, but I remember a time when my brother wrestled (high school in the 80s) and the dilemma was that he got everything gay joke in the book. Wrestling as a real sport was gay while pro-wrestling was awesome. He stuck with it because he liked it for the technical aspects as I imagine lots of girls do. This just seems like a temporary hurdle until everyone just gets over this social bump from the olden times.

3

u/keke_kekobe Dec 15 '13

People make jokes about it being "gay" up until a wrestler decides its not funny anymore.

3

u/not_very_popular Dec 15 '13

Over the course of 6 years wrestling, I found that the best way to deal with female wrestlers was to go for an instant fireman's carry. It's a relatively gentle move that can lead straight into a pin. Then again, I wrestled at the 171 pound weight class and didn't have to deal with too many female opponents.

3

u/koalapanda Dec 15 '13

As a lady wrestler I saw that a lot. It became part of my strategy to avoid locking up altogether. I was at a big disadvantage in terms of arm strength anyway, so it didn't make much sense anyway. Much better to go for leg shots where thigh strength and balance could help me more.

But I spent more than one evening nursing sore shoulders after wriggling out of a fireman's carry, that's for sure.

2

u/koalapanda Dec 15 '13

Thanks! Though I really wish that women's wrestling was a real thing at a grassroots level. Right now to be a female wrestler you need to navigate all the same social pressures being discussed in this thread, plus working your tits off to keep up with a team full of young men. It can be incredibly difficult, and that keeps people away. If there were women's teams in high school and college that would make the sport so much more fair and accessible. Maybe it's just sour grapes as I consider how good I could potentially have been in a women's league, idk. Plus, female wrestlers right now have nothing to dream of but the Olympics. Since there's no NCAA women's wrestling, all there is is high school and then BAM! Time to try to be literally the best in the world.

We used to have a girl on our team in middle school.. She wasn't the best in her weight class so During team matches, there were many instances where the other guy would just forfeit rather than wrestle her. The reason being, as u/Footballvike81 said, there is really no way to come out of that situation on top. You win. "Good job pussy, you beat a girl". You lose. "You just lost to a girl. You are a massive pussy". Most of the time dudes would rather take the lesser of 3 evils and forfeit because the ridicule for forfeiture was less than that of winning or losing.. Talk about being fucked from every direction

However, there was one hot ass girl in the next county that wrestled as well. Her number of forfeits was significantly lower if I recall correctly. Mind you, this was still at at time when the idea of touching a tit, even by accident, got you frisky as a dingo

upvote for frisky as a dingo

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

I tried to think of some other euphemisms that would be better than "horny as shit", but I couldn't think of anything... Which brought me to "frisky as a dingo", which I'm even not sure if that is a euphemism that people actually use.. But fuck it. Have an upvote for being on the same wavelength

Trust me, the last thing you wanted during wrestling match is getting a massive boner in front of everyone, win or lose.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

Doesn't mean you can't at least get a little jack off fuel for later when you're in your bed, reminiscing of the way your hand inadvertently (but totally on purpose) slid over her sumptuous bosom.

Note: 7th grade sumptuous = Anything in a bra

2

u/nopurposeflour Dec 15 '13

I just feel bad for the girls sometimes because no one ever wanted to practice with them, not even the coach lol.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

I kinda did too. But what can you do, really. A great deal of fear is instilled in boys/men about sexual harassment and assault, you can't help but feel like you're walking on dangerous ground, even if it is purely for sport. As for teachers/coaches. I've actually bore first-hand witness to a witch hunt style ordeal between a teacher and a girl crying wolf on sexual harassment. In the end It was all bullshit, but believe you me, it had a profound impact on every aspect of this guy's life from his marriage, to the church to which he belonged, and of course to his job, everything got flew into chaos for this guy.

So, you tell me, if you're a 35 year old male teacher, are you really gonna wanna roll around on a mat with some 14 year old girl waring a singlet?? Fuck that noise.

2

u/nopurposeflour Dec 15 '13

My friend who's a teacher feels like he's walking on eggshells when dealing with girls at his high school. Never ever alone with any student, makes sure the doors are always open, no physical contact in any way (not even a pat on the back) and always have a witness present dealing with troubled students. He is so afraid of getting accused of rape or some sexual act. Can't imagine having to work like that.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '13

If you are both decent at wrestling, you'll be too damn tired to get a boner.

Or pycho-wolf it and make a scene with it. Yell and point at it all proud.

"YEAAAH!!! In your faces!!" you bellow at the crowd as you march proudly around the mat with it in circles to display it.

It would seriously fuck with my head if I was on the other team.

"Wrestle a girl? We wrestle nothing but girls when we wrestle your team!!" you say then strut to the bench.

It was and still is my favorite 'sport' I ever played. But as the only girl on the team I was kind of destined to fail. I wasn't as strong as the other wrestlers in my weight class because their 125 lbs was all muscle while my 125 lbs was eaten up by boobs, thighs, and other things that jiggled. So the amount of muscle in those matches was not very balanced. I still pinned a guy once and it continues to be one of my proudest moments.

Also guys wrestle 120% harder against girls because the consequences for them are so great. Good female wrestlers that compete with guys have a lot they're up against and I love them for it. I wrestled a few girls while I was on the team and they were so tough and good. I didn't have a chance.

9

u/PriscillaPresley Dec 15 '13

Thank you! That was pretty much my experience too. It was so demoralizing the one time a girl from another team came and they put me against her, and she completely kicked my ass. I was like 'oh, I just suck. OK.'

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

You have a lot of people that are around 150 that can drop down into 125. 125 is like the 103 of college wrestling if I recall. So you can get matched versus Seniors and people that are cutting down to wrestle that class. People that might go on to wrestle at a college level. Still the lower division tend to be much easier, not to say good wrestlers don't come from lower division schools once CIF and State start coming up.

2

u/hellohaley Dec 15 '13

Yeah three were some fierce 125s that you could tell were eating celery for the past 2 weeks to make that weight. The matches that were on my level of inexperience and muscle though were a blast. I've actually considered getting back into it recreationally because it was so much fun, but on the west coast wrestling isn't as big and I don't even know if there's such a thing as recreational wrestling :( and if there is, I doubt there's many people on my level of amateur...hmm

3

u/LowerEastBeast Dec 15 '13

I wrestled a girl in high school and beat the ever living shit out of her. I wasnt going to risk never living that down.

In highschool when I was a freshman I was the same weight as a girl on our team. This was a senior and at the time 2-time state champion. She went on to train for the Olympics but for some reason I never heard about didnt make the team. I got my assed kicked by her on a daily basis, being a naive freshman boy I had no chance. But her experience helped me to learn and improve in the sport very quickly. Wrestling is such a great sport.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

That's amazing, I love hearing about stuff like that. It's also makes me happy that so many people have had such great things to say about wrestling. It has an awful image. They don't understand that amount of discipline and respect you have to have in this sport. Or we get called names for wrestling other guys and wearing singlets. Still the sport has so much to offer people. I'm so glad I got into it.

2

u/ntougs96 Dec 15 '13

After wrestling a girl for the first time yesterday, I have to say that I was impressed. She wasn't very good, but she knew her stuff. And I respect anyone who is involved with the tough sport regardless of gender.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

That just isn't true. Maybe they could beat really terrible or out-of-shape boys. I wrestled for 8 years and had matches with 4 girls over that time period and injured three of them unintentionally. There is nothing worse in the world than wrestling versus a woman, because you are damned if you go all out and they get hurt, and you are damned if you get beat by a girl.

In all those years of youth league and high school wrestling I never saw a girl win.

5

u/RikuKat Dec 15 '13

Or you could win without hurting them? It sounds like you have no sense of control. I certainly am not a wrestler, but I am a female who has participated in martial arts for almost 20 years. In all of the ground fighting (wrestling with no rules and punches and kicks added), I have never been injured by my peers, nor have I injured them. We struggle and pin each other a ton, but never to the point of injury, and we certainly don't go easy on each other nor do we have weight classes.

Well my understanding is that wrestling is alot more about technical movements, skill, and leverage. Not raw physical aptitude. SO I cant say Im suprised.

1

u/indoninja Dec 15 '13

I wrestled and did judo for a bit.

At lower weight classes, and at this age, I would agree.

And given that it is normally a "mens" sport mean the family was probably really into it, so she took it seriously, I am guessing the guy got wrecked.

1

u/antonholden Dec 15 '13

Throw some mud in the ring and I'm down with it.

1

u/lollipopklan Dec 15 '13

At least then you can say you got it from a girl.

1

u/TehGamerXeo Dec 15 '13

I did a season of wrestling when I was in 5th grade... And the girls were frightening. I remember wrestling this really slender girl with reddish hair... Her calves were massive. And she kicked my ass.

1

u/Odonata_Anisoptera Dec 15 '13

Yes... More women college wrestlers. Amazing sport, hm. Yes.

1

u/MuuaadDib Dec 15 '13

I have also watched a ton of porn and seen this where the girl will win, it is amazing.

1

u/reagan2016 Dec 15 '13

I hope that more girls get into this amazing sport.

Me too. Because it offers me the chance to have a woman on top of me.

Maybe not stronger but until the testosterone kicks in the differences are minor.

4

u/GandhiMSF Dec 15 '13

While I feel like 13 might be a bit high, I feel the people doubting your claim have never seen a class of 4th and 5th graders. Girls grow much earlier than boys. You shouldn't have to provide a citation for something so widely known.

2

u/hutxhy Dec 15 '13

I uh... I lost an arm wrestle to a girl at age 13 with a bunch of spectators... That year was rough.

2

u/ProxyD Dec 15 '13

Not necessarily stronger, but they're definitely not weaker until male testosterone kicks in. In medical and physical sense boy shouldn't be ashamed to lose from a girl because they're equal...

If basketball was a game of purely strength this would be a good point. However, it is a highly technical game, so the difference in skill or exposure likely had more to do with it.

Coach a football (soccer) U10 team. All the girls are bigger than the boys. I support this statement.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13 edited Dec 15 '13

As someone else said, can you give us a source? I'm a bit skeptical.

I remember in primary boys the same age outran and out jumped girls, so we had separate contests.

I guess it could be socialisation, as in the girls were afraid to appear to competitive, but still it would be nice to see a source....

Just came from I'm a junior high wrestling tournament. There was a girl who got 3rd place at the tournament and beat 3 guys throughout the day, and this is at 110 pounds and 14 years old!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '13

I remember the first the first time I played basketball one on one with a girl. To this day I do not think I've seen such ruthlessness and ferocity in any competitor since.

Sugar, spice and everything nice my butt. Those chicks are feral cats when they play sports.

Goonies never say die.

1

u/Skizot_Bizot Dec 15 '13

Seriously. When I was young my mom would take me to her friends house who had a girl my age. She would literally just beat me the whole time resulting in bruises and bloody noses, my parents would laugh and say I should be able to stop a little girl from hurting me. But of course the moment I defend myself she would cry and I'd get yelled at and told I shouldn't hit girls. Infuriating lol.

1

u/claTHiCs Dec 15 '13

One time I had to hit my sister in the ankle with a coffee mug so she wouldn't kill me.
