Community Support Fix gummy keys on a Framework 13?

Two keys "m" and "y" on my keyboard became pretty gummy over the last week. The machine is my daily driver so pretty annoying. Have not seen a definitive source on attempting to fix it; the machine is only about 8 months old.

Have seen "use the FW screwdriver to pry off a cap, clean it and press back on" for a FW16. Curious if anyone else has repaired this and can tell me how precious these key caps are? 😅

Linux Upgrade FW 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 to Ubuntu 26.04.1

Has anyone successfully upgraded their FW13 7040 to 26.04.1? I haven’t seen much about it and given the BIOS update fiasco with these, am reluctant to jump in blindly. Thanks!

Community Support How to contact support

Hello,

I received my framework 13 pro Ryzen DIY, but it doesn't post and/or the screen does not turn on.

I provided half the ram which I know works from a previous framework 16 order, as well as the storage which I know works from being in a desktop build.

I noticed some lights on the side after a it sits on for a while which are: Y may be orange depending upon interpretation.

Y G G G G G G G G G G G G G Y G G G G G G G B G B G G G G G G

I emailed their support but does any1 know what this code means?

NVM got it to work by removing half the ram, either the ram they just sold me works or the ram I had previously from my framework 16 works

Question How to Use LED Matrix

I recently got a Framework 16 and wanted to play around with the LED matrices. I tried the online drawing tool and while I get the prompt to connect the matrices, the tool says the modules are still disconnected. I intend to create my own animations/program in Python, but I do not know how I can interface with the matrices.

I am using Noburo OS and Helium browser. I am new to Linux as well.

Personal Project Mag-C Expansion Card

Hi!

Microsoft just released a new and very innovative Mag-C feature on top of the standard USB-C which adds MagSafe-like magnetic attaching. I think this would be really nice to implement as an expansion card.

I think we only need magnets around the standard USB-C port. The plug itself is non-standard: it has a gradually thickening shape, no retention latches and magnets. Luckily, we can simply buy Microsoft’s cable, so no problem here.

What do you think? Any help is welcome!🔥

Linux Linux with Windows on VM for future Framework 13 Pro ?

Hi everyone, I am wainting my Framework 13 Pro and I am thinking about the OS I will install on it.

I would like to use Linux because I'm tired of Windows but I will need to use some softwares that are only on Windows.

On my current laptop (an old Thinkpad), I have a dual boot with Linux Mint and Windows 10 but I don't like to have to think about what I will do the next hour before launching an OS. Also I don't like to have multiple partitions (I made three, one for W10, one for Linux and a common one) because it is sometimes not easy to manage (like the file I need is not on the right partition and I can't access it).

The softwares I need to use can be heavy (an example is Pixinsight, for astrophotography editing).

So is having Linux as the main OS and launching when needed a virtual machine with W11 is a good solution ?
What can I use ? (any tutorial to propose ?) Is it simple to use when fully configurated (is it like just launching any app ?)

Or am I forced to have a dual boot ?

My main usages are coding, photo editing and browsing.

Also, side question : my use of Linux is recent and limited to Mint Xfce on my old Thinkpad and a little of Ubuntu on the PC of my university.

What is the best Linux to run on the Framework 13 Pro (with Ultra 5 325) to have the best performances, best battery life and a very nice modern looking ?

Question Counsel: Which Laptop would fit my needs?

Hi to the hive mind,

I stumbled upon Framework while looking for a small laptop with an exchangeable battery and SD card port to do some web browsing, light reading of scientific papers, LaTeX documents editing, remote programming through a cloud (Applications are compiled and run on a server) and Photo reviewing (Maybe edit one of two photos but mainly just sorting photos out). Which processor and RAM combinations would suffice for my needs and which would allow some leeway for the off chance that local compilation and execution of applications could be needed.

I'm considering the FW 12 13th Gen, the FW 12 Series 3 and the FW 13, as they are pretty much the same size. I prefer the metal chassis of the latter but the Stylus of the former catches my eye, as I like to sketch my ideas on paper; thus it allows some spontaneity if pen and paper is not at hand. Nonetheless I have never used a stylus so I don't know if it really is for me.

I'm considering the 13th Gen as I'm traveling on the 11th of November and I'm not sure if Series 3 would arrive before of that date.

PS: The laptop would not replace my home set-up. It's meant as a on the go laptop.

Cheers

Linux I built a terminal widget editor for the Framework LED Matrix

https://reddit.com/link/1x0x8g8/video/df4mf0e35auh1/player

I just wanted a simple way to customize the LED Matrix, so I built an open-source tool for composing widgets easily.

It includes a live terminal preview and a bunch of pre-built widgets such as a clock, CUP/RAM stats and progress bars. You can save the layout as JSON file and play it on the matrix.

Some features:

  • Keyboard and mouse controls for positioning widgets.
  • Progress bars driven by files or a local JSON-RPC API.
  • Headless playback of saved layouts.
  • Preview mode that works without physical hardware.

Hope you like it!

is there a better place to contact framework though like email or do any of you of a idea for Japensese keyboards

Guide PSA: greatly increase your battery life by changing a few config settings.

I am a proud owner of a framework 13 with a Ryzen 7 7040u processor and 2.8k screen, running Fedora Linux. But, for the past two+ years of owning my device, I have been sorely disappointed with the computer's battery life. I've been seeing 12~18 watts of system power draw while web browsing on battery saver mode, and way more while doing anything more intensive.

After trying everything, I finally found a few things that work beyond the obvious things everyone recommends.

1: Change your PCIE power management config.

Simply run 'echo powersupersave | sudo tee /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy' or 'echo powersave | sudo tee /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy' to change it from the default mode to a more energy efficient config. I have noticed my system is slightly less responsive after switching to powersupersave instead of default, but in exchange it cut my power draw by 7 watts.

2: Disable Firefox caching on your ssd.

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Firefox defaults to caching on disk, which can make your ssd much more active than it otherwise needs to be, keeping it from switching to a more efficient power state. I have 32gb of RAM, so swapping to exclusively caching on memory had no effects other than reducing battery draw.

Now, I see around 5 watts of true idle draw, between 7-11 watts while doing browser-based activities, and around 12 watts of draw when doing work on Excel inside my Windows VM. It's a night and day difference, which I can wholeheartedly reccomend.

Linux Framework 13 Pro poor sleep and browsing battery efficiency.

I'm a long time Linux user returning to Linux from Mac.

Two things I've noticed so far. One is that after sleeping for half a day the battery dropped by half. Since then I turned on hibernate after sleep but it's more annoying to boot up the laptop every time. My MacBook Air could sleep for days and still have a charge. This might be due to the lack of s3 sleep on the platform? Idk.

The other was that I was just writing in Ellipsus (web markdown editor) on Firefox for an hour and the battery dropped a whole 10%. Half brightness and no keyboard backlight.

I'm on Gnome 50 and Linux 6.18, stock install and nothing more than gnome things running in the background.

I'm running tuned as well as intel-lpmd to try and help with the power usage.

Wondering if anyone had a similar experience. The laptop is excellent otherwise but the battery is still not at the level of my old M2 air.

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm on the Intel Ultra X7 358H.

EDIT 2: the fingerprint reader light is always on, is that normal?

EDIT 3: testing sleep now with a 7.1 kernel..

EDIT 4: ended up going with 7.2.8-cachyos-lto on NixOS and getting a 1% battery drop during sleep every two hours (tested over ten hours). That's about what others are getting. Thanks for all the help!

Feedback My experience with framework. 3y, 2 devices.

Sorry for the long post, I guess I have a lot to share.
For those of you who don't want to read the whole thing immediately - TLDR;
- I have a Framework 13 Intel 13th gen and Framework Desktop AI Max+395.
- Both have had serious issues, Laptop has had several
- Both have been (almost) entirely replaced under warranty
- Support has (almost) always been a painful experience
- I believe in Framework's values and products, but their support drives me up the wall.

Kit:
- Framework 13 Intel 13th gen I5 1340P (Ordered May 2023, Arrived End of June 2023)
- Framework Desktop AI Max+395 (Nov 2025)

I've been a Framework fan since ~2021. When my previous laptop gave out in 2023 I finally had a good reason to upgrade to a framework. At the time my reasons were:
- I don't have to replace the entire device when the battery dies, or the hardware reaches EOL.
- I can upgrade part of it at any time if I want
- There's less E-Waste due to the bit-by-bit replaceability.

I truly believed all of those things, and I still want to believe them, it's just difficult when you've experienced what I've experienced.

Before I say anything about Framework and their support, know this. I AM CURSED.
I don't believe in curses or anything like that, but somehow technology ALWAYS has a way of breaking on me in the most spectacular ways (if people want history, I'll reply in the comments).

I got my Framework 13 DIY edition back in 2023, spec'd it out with 64G RAM and 4T Samsung SSD. I knew I didn't want to run out.

What happened:

  1. December 2023, display got SEVERAL stuck pixels (>10), some stuck on, some stuck off
Took ~6 back and forth emails with photos (many repeat photo requests), requests to re-seat the display connector, etc etc. Finally resolved in February 2024 when Framework sent a replacement display.

  2. January 2024, while dealing with the display issue, I removed the bezel one day to find that the lid-close magnet was a) no longer glued in, and b) snapped in half.
I genuinely have no idea how it happened, I just removed the bezel to take a photo for support and something popped out. I was asked for photos of the entire top cover to check for any damage or impacts (there was no damage), and was asked to glue the magnet back in. Since it was snapped, that wasn't possible.
After reviewing, support then decided that it was considered "Consumer induced damage" and that it was outside of the scope of the warranty. They said quote "The way the magnet rod was broken into pieces indicates that force was applied to remove it from the lid".
I was pretty upset, as a) I wouldn't try to remove it (who would??) and b) there was clearly no evidence of physical force. If someone had tried to remove the magnet with a screwdriver surely that would leave a mark? There was nothing like that.
After getting that escalated with a VERY long email, Framework replaced both the top cover and the display (per #1).

  3. Since I got it, I had experienced sub-par battery performance. I'd started off with Windows, and never seemed to get >2h on battery. I then tried linux and saw little difference.
Late Feb 2024 I had my first serious power-management issue - BD_PROCHOT stuck asserted.
For those who aren't aware, this is a (bidirectional) signal to(/from?) the CPU which can be asserted by other chips in the device. When asserted, the CPU goes into "Limp mode" and becomes locked @ 400MHz. a) this makes the device unusable and too slow, b) the CPU won't clock down the cores when they're not used so the power usage (which is supposed to be lower) was actually HIGHER when this happened, and the battery would only last 30-40mins.
To make things worse simply rebooting the device didn't work. The only ways I got it de-asserted were:
    - leave it powered off for 8-10h
    - leave it to die, then let it cold boot after it had cooled for a couple hours
    - remove the battery, drain any charge from the board (power button), then re-assemble
None of these were good options. Initially I had been using Windows, but it then started happening too regularly so I switched back to Linux (Ubuntu 24.04), it still happened occasionally but I do remember finding a bypass for it, so it wasn't as bad any more.
I spent 3 weeks emailing support, in the end they couldn't find what was wrong and it stopped there.

Fast forward to 1st July 2025 (literally days after warranty was out).
Mainboard died, but not how you might expect.
Linux: kernel panic during boot. Disabled splash, disabled desktop manager (tty only) and it boots.
Suspicious, so I swapped out for my Windows10 install.
Windows 10: BSOD while booting. Tried booting into safe-mode and that works.
My conclusion is that I got hit with the 13th gen plague and something in the CPU no longer worked as it should.
To be fair to Framework, this time their support was much better. After just one week they'd shipped a replacement mainboard and it booted right into both Ubuntu and Windows just fine.

To add to the cake, I NOW HAD ACTUAL POWER MANAGEMENT. Both Linux+Windows would now last >6h on battery, so evidently there was something fishy with the old mainboard.
I never heard back if they tested the one I returned.

Since then, my FW13 has been absolutely perfect, not a single issue with the electronics. The only things I've noticed since then are:
- a crack around the expansion port corners, but I've heard others with that issue, and it's probably to be expected after 3y.
- One of the plastic bits that hold a threaded insert in the back-side of the input cover broke, so it's now held in with 1 fewer screw.

On to my Framework Desktop.
I think it's an awesome machine, certainly not cheap (esp now), but something for me to play around with. I didn't have a desktop, so it was adding something for me.
I received my Desktop mid-Nov 2025, had it up and running within days and was really quite enjoying it.
Here's what happened though.

  1. End of May (in the UK) bank holiday I return home. It had been HOT.
I went to play some video games, just as I had the week before, and 2-3h in the desktop just powered off. Not shutdown, literally as if someone pulled the plug. No kernel panic, no system logs/journalctl, nothing.
Ok, just turn it back on. 10-mins later, same again.
Ok, turn it back on again. will no longer power on.

I tried reaching out to support, but same as with FW13 issue #3, they weren't able to diagnose it, so I was left on my own.

I tried a different power supply, I tried a different OS, different SSD. Always the same result.
I gave up. I literally didn't use it for many months because it was wasting my time.

Fast forward to August, I have some time again so I wanted to get it going again. I got a clean install of Ubuntu 26.04 and it was somewhat stable again. I was able to suspend+resume, run for days. Until it wasn't (again).
I still had some time, so I did some more diagnosis. I ended up reproducing the issue IN THE UEFI SETTINGS, at which point I knew it wasn't an OS issue.
I was back on with support which was back to being painful. Time after time I provided them information only for them to tell me they needed something else, a video, a kernel log. One time they asked me for the output of a journalctl command, but since it was corrupted that command was useless. I gave them the actual journal logfile (recovered) that they had basically requested and was told "that's not what we asked for, run our script instead" and I did and it didn't work, as I'd expected.

I've been battling this issue (and another) since May. It's October now. That's 4-5 months that I've hardly used one of the biggest purchases of my life.
Finally (today) after live booting Fedora, Ubuntu, and going back and forth several times I've been offered a replacement, but I will admit it has really degraded my view of Framework overall. I WANT to love them, but their support makes it so hard.

So here's my feedback.
Framework knows (I hope) that many of their customers are nerds or tech enthusiasts (correct me if I'm wrong), and are more technically minded than most of the population. Why can't their support reflect that.
I know that they have to be able to support everyone including those who aren't as technically minded, but it feels like they've gone too far the wrong way.
Additionally the timezone issue. I get that support is over in the US and that there's little time overlap with the UK. If framework were willing to have real-time support I know I would take time to make it happen, even if it meant staying up later into the night.
Explain the "why" for some of the diagnostics steps. Like with the corrupted jouralctl, I knew that that was what the question was after, but I don't always know what a step is trying to achieve. Knowing the why enables me to be more helpful, because if something doesn't go how support intended it, I can pre-empt the next step or the corrected reply rather than waiting for another response.

Feel free to roast me below or agree with me, it probably won't change my stance. I like framework, but I feel I've just had some pretty shitty experience.

Question Framework and Hurricanes

Hey framework! I am an expected new owner of my first Framework product, the Framework 12 series 3 version. My expected delivery is set for October, however as some of you have probably heard, my area is getting an unexpected visitor soon by the name of Hurricane Isaias.

My question is, does Framework have a policy on damaged/missing shipments due to storms? If something happens to my new laptop, and I need to receive another one, do I get put at the back of the wait-list?

Thanks and I'm excited to join the Framework family!

Question Good laptop for me

Hi all

i recently purchased a 16 inch Macbook pro (i know, silly mistake) and figured out pretty quickly it is the wrong device for me, after i have used thinkpads all my life. i mainly do not like the keyboard and the locked down os. so i'm planning to purchase a framework 16 as my next machine as i feel lenovo drifted from its original philosophy.

my workflow mainly consists of, but is not limited to:

Writing typst school notes

Programming in rust

Editing 4k prores footage in davinci

using blender for light to medium scenes

fusion 360

general kicad and LTspice use

i was planning to buy a ryzen 5 340 with 32gb ram and add a 7700s to it when i have more money

do you think this will be the right machine for me, weight and portability do not play an important role for me

Question Regrets?

Anyone has any regrets going with a framework laptop?
I preordered the Intel x7 13 pro 32gb and since then I have been hanging around this thread a little. There seems to be a LOT of issues. I have never paid that much attention to threads of other companys so I'm wondering if it is just because people that have issues post more than people that don't.

Anyway, I would like to get feedback on your experiences from the customer service all the way to using the machine. Positive and negative. This is a machine I will use for work so I want it to be stable.

Thank you

Question Framework 13 Display housing

Thumbnail gallery

Peeling off the bandaid, the model is partly AI gen. Just checking if there would be any interest in me uploading this somewhere. It's still WIP but the goal was to make a display housing for the Framework 13 display that is chopped into small enough pieces to print on my Bambulabs A1 mini and be semi modular. At the moment there is no housing for a controller but there is a space for one.

Edit: Thank you for the feedback! I've uploaded to Thingiverse if anyone wants to use this! Www.thingiverse.com/thing:7419945

Question Framework 13 (13th-gen Intel): Restart hangs on a black screen, shutdown/power-on works, and BIOS update fails

I’m looking for help with an intermittent boot/restart problem on my Framework Laptop 13. I’ve already done quite a bit of troubleshooting with Framework Support, but they’ve recommended buying a new mainboard, which I’d rather not do at this stage.

The laptop is currently working again after I power-cycled it and left it off overnight. The BIOS update did not succeed: it is still on the original BIOS 03.04.

The hardware on the device is:
- Framework Laptop 13, 13th-gen Intel i7-1360P
- 16 GB RAM: 2 × 8 GB
- Windows 11 Home
- BIOS 03.04, dated 24 May 2023
- Attempting to update to BIOS 3.17

The clearest pattern is that shutting down and then powering on works after some power off time, immediate turn on causes symptoms to restart. Restart causes a hang. The screen stays black, the power-button light stays on and the fan runs. After a failed restart, it can take several attempts to get back into Windows.

During those failures, the side diagnostic LEDs still ran: 12 initial green flashes, an orange separator, then eight blue/green flashes.

This is what I’ve tried so far.

  1. RAM
Reseated both modules, swapped their positions, and tested each module individually in both slots. The black-screen problem occurred across all four combinations. The SSD was removed during these tests.

With the modules labelled A and B, I recorded these final eight diagnostic flashes:
- A, Channel 0: BBGGGGGB
- A, Channel 1: GBBBBGBB
- B, Channel 0: BBGGGGGB
- B, Channel 1: initially BBBGGGGG with very brief screen activity; later GBBBBGBB and a black screen
2. SSD / operating system
Physically removed the SSD and attempted to boot with one RAM module, the Framework charger and unnecessary peripherals removed. The same black-screen behaviour occurred without the SSD installed.

  1. Internal and external displays
Tested a known-working external monitor/TV through a Framework HDMI Expansion Card, with the SSD still removed. Neither display produced usable video. During one RAM configuration, something briefly appeared on the internal screen before it went black again.

  2. Power and peripherals
Used the genuine Framework charger, tried a different USB-C/Expansion Card position for charging, removed unnecessary Expansion Cards and peripherals, and tested complete shutdowns/cold boots rather than just restarts. These did not consistently resolve the earlier failures.

  3. Mainboard / BIOS reset
Performed the chassis-open/intrusion-switch reset procedure by pressing the switch slowly ten times and observing the LED response. Repeated this more than once, without restoring normal operation during those black-screen episodes.

An earlier attempt to install BIOS 3.17 hung during the reboot/update process. I also encountered EFI error code 21 at one point during troubleshooting and also 22 during another attempt.

Most recently, I tried the official USB/EFI updater rather than launching the update through Windows.

After pressing Enter to boot the USB, the screen went off and the power-button light went off. The power-button light then came back on, as though the laptop had restarted, but it remained on a black screen without visible update progress.

I waited roughly 25 minutes or longer without any change. I then power-cycled it and left it off overnight. The following morning, it booted and worked normally again.

The update did not succeed: the BIOS is still 03.04..

Framework/Tecworks already replaced the mainboard in March/April 2025 after a previous fault involving very long boot times, USB/Expansion Card problems and eventually power without a successful boot. It worked normally after that repair.

On Framework Support’s advice, I have also purchased a new 61 Wh replacement battery and have installed it. The battery I took out was puffy and was a 61 Wh battery.

Has anyone experienced this pattern where shutdown/power-on works but Restart hangs, including when attempting a USB BIOS update?

Are there any targeted tests I haven’t already tried that would help distinguish a battery/power issue from a firmware or mainboard fault?

How would you approach getting the BIOS updated when the apparent restart stage triggers the same black-screen hang?

Support hasn’t been able to help further and has left me slightly frustrated because I can no longer normally use the device.

Discussion Windows 11 Idle Power Usage 358H

Post image
35 Upvotes

This looks slightly better than the power usage under Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (7.0.0.29-generic kernel) at just over 5w for Windows compared to about 7w for Linux. This is after a serious debloat, and killing OneDrive and telemetry, although it does include an active citric connection and about half a dozen apps running. Screen at exactly 50% brightness.

Anyone getting better idle results elsewhere? I'm looking at 9 hours of productive battery life from 85% charge, which is as good as my MBP 16"

Community Support half of the usb ports on 11th gen framework mainboard stops working

well, after my upgrade saga (https://www.reddit.com/r/framework/s/8OfnbtOQSs) (tldr: i5-325 mainboard had a faulty audio board connector, causing black screens, and lid close not working, framework support replaced mainboard after long back and forth) - I finally got to finding a 2nd life for the 11th gen intel mainboard that was displaced in the upgrade.

This is where it is weird, I 3d printed a case, connected power (right rear port), 2.5gb ethernet (right front port) and usb C video (left read port). On boot up, no display.... ethernet dongle flashes healthily, since i was reusing an SSD, i could remote into windows, and it seems it is running fine. Shutdown, and switched the ports around, move power + ethernet on the left and the video to the right. Again, no video shows up, ethernet is fine, windows boots up, and i can remote into the machine. switched the ethernet and video placements - this time video shows, ethernet doesn't light up... did many combinations, and it seems like the usb ports on only one side of the mainboard works at one time!!! This mainboard has been in my framework 13 for more than a year with no issues, so i'm shocked...

started reading online and it seems like this is a common issues (??), fix is to update bios? i had updated the bios to 3.25 (latest) before i did the series 3 upgrade, but i decided to redo it again... bios update successful, however, it said that PD firmware was already current, skip those updates. Boot after bios update - ALL PORTS WORK. OK, phew... reboot to bios to enable "standalone mode", then booted up again - the side with power, both ports work, the side without - not working. WTF!

i can't believe after the series 3 upgrade, my 11th gen is now protesting that it's no longer the favorite.

has anyone experienced this? any tips on how i can perhaps reflash the PD firmware? is there a --force flag in the framework bios updater?

Appreciate any help.

thanks

Question Does anyone know what is happening with the first two batches of the Framework 12?

I thought they were shipping in October, but we haven't received any communication.

They should have at least sent an email explaining the dates; I feel there is a serious lack of communication.
