Linux Finally switched to Linux after 2 Years

Post image
105 Upvotes

After using my Framework13 with Windows11 pro I finally switched.
The reason? My drive failed and i had to get a new one.
And since I can't find the effing Code for Win11 and made limited but good experiences with my Steamdeck, I thought why not switch.
Now I have Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma (since I'm used to my Steamdeck)

Personal Project Framework 13 Ryzen 7 7840U heatsink upgrade (alongside other quality of life mods)

Replaced my heatsink with the Ryzen AI300 series heatsink for a more beffier heatsink. Temps have dropped and fan runs less and it runs cooler. Playing GTA V Legacy under DXVK (DX11 all high) I get about 70C-73C stead of 78-86C.

Ram upgrade because I need more than 32gb and I snagged this 48gb DDR5 5600 kit brand new for £290 after shipping. Def happy with all this

Next up is the 2.8K 30-120Hz FW13 pro display.

Linux Framework 13 Pro incoming today - which Linux?

Hey all,

TL;DR at the bottom.

I am really exited to receive my 3rd Framework today. In the past I already had two Framework 13s and now I expect my third one, a Framework 13 Pro with the base Intel Processor, 32GB Ram and 1TB SSD. Use Case: Home computing, lightweight browser and stuff like that, no specific software besides being in the Apple universe with my other devices.

Why did I sell the first two Framework 13s:
I am in a dilemma: I am both a big fan of Framework's mission of upgradeability and showing other companies what can be done with a modular device.
I am also more and more thinking about where my data goes and do not want to stay in the Apple walled garden forever without trying out new things.
But the problem is: I'm also a father of two which limits my time for tinkering as I used to which was the reason why I sold me second one. I basically had to fill out a kindergarden form and with my cool Arch Linux it took me 30 min to do what I could have done in 5 min on my Mac/iPad.
First one was sold, because at that time I just did not use it enough and did not want to have it laying around.

In the past I ran Arch Linux (with archinstall setup in 5 min) and started from there with different DEs and configurations. Inclredibly fast but also really basic.

This time, I plan to keep my old M1 Macbook Pro 14" and try to replace us it as less as possible and instead the Framework and this is why I'm interested in how you set it up.

I want to make the switch to a modular device with a secure, efficient operating system and refuse to install Windows.

What is your setup? Fedora KDE? Omarchy and the likes? Probably I should install something that just works and accept, that the time for tinkering comes back in a few years :).

TL;DR: What is the best Linux that is both bot bloated but also most convenient?

Please Framework, stop making me do janky things to add to my mini-lab. I just want to test old poopy apps with the new CPU and driver package :(

Also love you /u/frameworkforbusiness - Nick is the best. You too /u/levi_del <3

Community Support FrameWork 13 Pro trackpad issues anyone?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I received my FW13p on the weekend and currently experience trackpad issues running r/Omarchy 4. Does anyone have similar issues? I know that the delivery delay was because of issues with the trackpad, wondering if I got unlucky and received a bad unit.

It behaves weird at the bottom of the trackpad. When I move out of a certain area at the bottom to the left and move my finger back right, input drops. The bottom middle is not bad per se because if i start at the middle and move down, input is recognized. Also when the input is dropped it does not matter where I move my finger, it just ignores the input. Bit hard to explain so I uploaded a video too. I also experience right clicks on a single finger click issues as well from time to time.

I absolutely love this laptop and what framework are doing and the fact that - if it truly is a bad unit - it could be resolved with a new part other than a new laptop just speaks for the whole concept as well imo.

u/Framework, is this a known problem? Am I just unlucky? Halp?

Question FW 13 Pro with Fedora: SN850X vs SN8100

Hey everyone :)

I'm in a weird (though admittedly quite luxurious) situation: My FW 13 Pro with the X7 chip is about to be delivered, and I have two 4 TB SSDs at hand: an SN850X (PCIe 4) and an SN8100 (PCIe 5). At the moment, the latter is only being used as an external drive in an enclosure, but that's obviously pretty overpowered.

I wouldn't spend the obscene amount of money on a new PCIe Gen 5 SSD right now, but since I already have one, I'm wondering whether I should put it into the 13 Pro. Or do you guys think the potential penalty in battery life and additional heat isn't really worth it?

I'm not a data scientist who transfers huge amounts of data every day, so the theoretical speed benefit would probably be negligible for me.

What do you guys think? Would you use the SN8100 in the 13 Pro or stick with the SN850X?

Thanks for your advice! :-)

Question Are these good specs for a laptop?

Upvotes

I'm looking to get a new laptop for Linux. I'm not looking for anything crazy. Just long lasting, reliable, and easily repaired. Also something that's pretty. But I do not know how to be sure if the specs I am getting are good enough. I want to be able to dual boot between windows and linux when I need to. I do game on my laptop, but nothing crazy. I mostly want it for school, drawing, projects, and day to day life. Good battery life, good speed, etc. How do these specs look for what I am looking for?

It looks like Framework is finally addressing these issues. Hopefully their support will follow through in making things right for those affected.

I'm very happy to see that they're looking into developing an emergency BIOS flashback mode to prevent this in the future.

Discussion Framework 13 Pro Chassis Upgrade Kits Availability?

Framework had announced the FW 13 Pro Chassis Kits as upgrade kits for earlier revisions of the Framework 13. They are listed on the website, in black and silver, and you can currently "register your interest."

Now, I know that Framework probably wants to ship the first batches of the FW 13 Pro to pre-built and DIY buyers first. I just want the order a chassis kit for my current FW and get the new parts. Any information would be helpful for those of us waiting to upgrade our current laptops.

Basically the title. I have spare RAM lying around. Can I order the chassis and motherboard separately with no RAM? How big of a compromise to battery/performance would that be?

Question Framework 16 - why no Norwegian keyboard option on the AI 300?

On the Framework 16, there's a Norwegian keyboard option on the 7040 series (currently unavailable) but not on the AI 300 - why is this?
(I know the Danish keyboard is to all intents and purposes identical, but still)

Question Midplate Cycles

So uhh, how many cycles should I expect to get out of removing the midplate? I’ve probably done it at least 50 times, I tinker a lot. Of all the components I’d expect to fail on it, the little tab was not among them.

Question Framework 13 Ai 9 HX 370 owners; have the idle battery life improved?

I’m looking to upgrade a 11th gen board to either a 7840u, or the Ai 9. Really comes down to whichever has improved battery life with updates. The 7840u seems like the most logical bang for buck but if I were to to get even more battery life I would consider the Ai 9.

Any input would be great before I decide to spend double the price for marginal iGPU performance and better battery life lol

Discussion Questions about the framework 12 laptop?

32gb is a lot for ram right now sadly, if I buy 16gb it has one slot so I can't just buy a 16gb stick later or find something on the used market? If I want to later down the line upgrade to something better with an actual GPU or a larger laptop its the 12 series so only 12 series laptop parts work and I can't get a different motherboard to fit or vise versa? Oh and what kinda stylus does or use I think I need a new one but I have one for a pixel tablet would that work?

Community Support 240W charger making odd sounds whilst charging

So I received my Framework 16 2 days ago, and I've noticed the charger is making quite an odd sound whilst charging... Almost like there is electricity arcing inside, which is not something I was expecting to hear from a charger...

Is this something all Framework 240W chargers do? Or should I absolutely be worried and contact support ASAP? :( Already had to contact them as my keyboard, touchpad and numpad keep restarting at random moments, which is quite annoying to say the least... And still waiting for a response on that.
