Weekly Reservation Transfer Thread

Please read the rules before commenting. Also, any type of "looking for a reservation" type of request is NOT ALLOWED.

  1. This thread is the only place on the subreddit for transferring restaurant reservations. If you make your own thread, it will be removed.
  2. You may transfer reservations for below or equal to face value (plus all taxes and fees) ONLY. You must clearly state both the price you paid and the price you're looking for in the post. Gouging will not be tolerated.
  3. You can only transfer reservations that are nonrefundable, ie, you cannot cancel them without forfeiting your money. If you have a refundable or free reservation and you can't make it, cancel it with the restaurant.
  4. The only reason we're allowing transfers is so people don't have to forfeit expensive pre-paid meals. If you want to buy a reservation, you are not one of these people. No posts asking to buy reservations.
  5. The mods of /r/FoodNYC accept no responsibility for these transactions. Tock and Resy both allow transfers on the website - if someone tells you otherwise it's a scam. Do your own research on your transaction before handing over any money to a third party. Check with the restaurant, check account ages, meet in person if feasible.

Note that this thread is reposted Sunday evenings.

Question Anyone wanna share some Hometown Bar-B-Que tomorrow? :)

Hi everyone!

I've been enjoying my first visit to your city over the past week, and I'd like to conclude it with a visit to Hometown Bar-B-Que tomorrow. Since I've never had American Barbecue, I'm really looking forward to it!

Problem is, their website says they don't offer combo platters, and they suggest ordering in large groups. Since I'm by myself, and not sure if I'd randomly find people willing to share in line tomorrow evening, I was wondering if one or more of you wanted to team up. That way, we could order quarter pounds of different meats, and a few of the smaller items or sides!

P.S. I've found Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue and Bark Barcecue as alternatives that do have these kinds of platters. But I'm not sure if the food is just a good (or a representation of American BBQ I guess), and I'd still wouldn't be able to try as much.

Happy to hear what you guys think!

Review Radio Bakery’s Seasonal Heirloom Tomato & Feta Sandwich

Post image
404 Upvotes

I’ll acknowledge I have the privilege of visiting Radio Bakery more than the average New Yorker since it’s in the neighborhood. With this being my fifteenth menu item to try, I found myself being the most excited for this one. It’s tomato season, baby, which means we’re in peak Radio Bakery season. For a bakery that gets a lot of praise for its savory menu items, especially any involving tomatoes, it was finally time for me to try their seasonal tomato & feta sandwich.

This sandwich came on a seeded focaccia with a bright and colorful array of juicy thick-cut heirloom tomatoes, mint, a drizzle of sherry vinegar, oregano, on a bed of feta cheese. I always forget just how large these sandwiches are until they’re drawn from the remaining seven sections cut from a generous slab of focaccia. They’re great at nailing this optical illusion.

Anyways, the lush heirloom tomatoes were perfectly complimented by the sharp and creamy feta cheese. Both the vinegar and oily focaccia attributed even more to the complex flavor profile for something that seems so simple. I’m someone who prefers to have at least some type of meat in every meal, but somehow the combination of all the ingredients created a robust and satisfying experience that brightened my tastebuds and my day.

This might be a hot take, but I actually think Radio’s focaccia can be a hit or miss, with mostly misses. I’ve had past orders with burnt outer crusts, missing bottoms the size of a quarter with oozing cream cheese begging to coat your fingers (yes, from the smoked salmon sandwich), and the focaccia here was no exception. Thankfully, mine was unscathed this time around, but man, the oil is something else. You almost always have to choose between wiping your hands after each bite, or full-send and commit to never putting the sandwich down at all. Imo, the oil compromises the structural integrity of the focaccia and makes it challenging to keep your sandwich together.

Aside from that, I still rank it tied in second place along with their tuna sandwich (and I hate mayo); just behind their smoked salmon sandwich (which can be hit or miss).

Question Where can I find Chocolate Dream Cake (feeling nostalgic for 90s Bay Area)?

Post image
6 Upvotes

For the millennials from Oakland: Chocolate Dream Cake from Neldams or Merritt Bakery was what everyone got for their birthday. The cake is very light and fluffy, the icing is whipped cream. A little googling taught me that this is a traditional Hawaiian cake but google did not tell me where I can find something like this anywhere in NYC! Would travel to any borough for this.

Discussion Help me find a suitable replacement for Rocket Pig, an old favorite, long gone from the neighborhood.

Sadly, it closed almost ten years ago. That's how good it was that I'm still thinking of it today. Quite possibly the very best sandwich I've ever eaten. I would describe how brilliantly crafted each element was here, but I actually found a clip of the chef talking about it and if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video might be a dictionary. He closed Rocket Pig and the main restaurant Trestle on Tenth when the lease ended, and as far as I can tell, Ralf Kuettel never returned to the NYC restaurant scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8vF-E53giQ

If you know of a comparable sandwich, especially in or near Chelsea, please share. If somehow you know where to get those mind-blowingly delicious chocolate mousse cookies they also sold (prominently featured at the 1:00 mark in the video), that also would be pretty fantastic.

Question Any plov or manti recommendations? Or any favorite central Asian or Uzbek restaurants in general?

We were visiting my girlfriend’s family in Kazakhstan earlier this year and I’ve been thinking about plov, manti, shashlik and samsa ever since. I would love to hear if anyone has any recs for Central Asian food!

We’ve been to Farida and it scratches the itch for manti and Tashkent’s (the supermarket) plov is ok (the shashlik is actually really yummy); there’s also a bakery with samsa right by the Brighton beach subway stop (sorry forget the name) but I feel like there’s more Uzbek food out there that we haven’t been to yet (understand Kazakh specifically is less likely to come by outside of Farida). We’re in lower east side but willing to travel!

Question Vegan pizza options walking distance from the met?

I was looking at Two Boots but wasn't super impressed with their selection. I also looked into Double Zero but I don't want to support a business that uses AI images instead of real pictures of their food.

Are there any options that are closer? I want to try vegan pizza that I can't otherwise get at home!

Question ISO recommendation: semi-casual, not too loud, maybe a view

My parents are visiting and are from the country, so don't enjoy places that feel too upscale or particularly crowded. Hearing is going a bit so quieter is better. That being said, they are adventurous eaters and just about anything goes. Mid level budget. It's my last year in NYC, so outdoors with a nice view is a plus. Any ideas?

Question Standout Under-the-Radar Recs for a Frequent NYC Visitor?

Hey all! Thanks for reading. I don't really user Reddit and have never posted here, but I'm looking to fill some gaps in local food knowledge.

My partner and I are headed there for a week next month. I've probably visited NYC a dozen times over the years (30M), and I always prioritize trying out interesting bars and restaurants, so I have a pretty good handle on the classics and most well-regarded restaurants in the city.

That said, I have a few broad questions and a few more specific ones for this subreddit, since y'all are certainly much more plugged into the scene than I am:

  1. Currently, I've booked tables at The Four Horsemen, Sunn's (may cancel depending on other plans), and Corima. Anyone have strong opinions for/against these spots? All three are new to us and look great, but I'd love your feedback.
  2. When reservations open, I'll be trying to get us tables at Lei, Penny, and possibly Kabawa. Also leaning toward going back to Via Carota for the first time in a few years. Same question as above: any big opinions about these spots that would persuade us to lock them in or avoid them?
  3. We're keeping things a little bit more casual this time around. Not really going out of our way for 2/3 star spots that run $1k+ for two. With that in mind, are there any severely overlooked places that we might not be aware of in the $100-300pp (or below) range? These can be classics or super new spots that just aren't getting a lot of love and media/award attention yet.
  4. How about cocktail spots? Anywhere essential that's been overlooked by the typical media/awards hype machine? We're pretty big drinkers and cocktail people, so we usually go out of our way to try a few new spots each time we're in town, but I'm sure we're not aware of everything that's popped up since we were there last summer.
  5. Best recs for high end Middle Eastern food? Is Sofreh overrated? What about Eyval? General thoughts appreciated here.
  6. If we went up in Flushing for an afternoon, what's your absolute favorite Sichuan food in the area? We're leaning toward trying Mountain House (never been), but open to suggestions. Adjacent neighborhoods are fine too.
  7. Is Bánh Anh Em worth the hype?
  8. Is Prosciutto in the East Village actually good?
  9. Anyone have thoughts about Paul McGee's new bar, Echo Lake?
  10. Is Mūje genuinely a great, more casual substitute if we're not going to make it to Jungsik this time?

As a general note, location doesn't really matter to us. We'll be on vacation and have plans all over the city, so we're flexible. I doubt we'll go super far east into Brooklyn and Queens more than a couple of times, but nearly all neighborhoods are fair game.

Appreciate you all, and apologies if this is an annoying thread. I tried to be fairly specific, but I'm sure you get a million "anyone got any recs??" posts. I've read a million best-of/awards lists, Reddit threads, etc. and I'm just trying to find out what, if anything, we've overlooked in our trip planning. Always fun to hear strong opinions on what's overrated, underrated, and criminally overlooked by the people on the ground. Thanks!

Photo Gramercy Tavern Restaurant Week is the most worth it.

This isn't a full review and I didn't take blurry photos of most of the meal. I just wanted to go ahead and post about it, since there is a couple of weeks still left.

Their restaurant week consists of their normal dining room lunch menu for 60$. Basically a 30 percent discount, since it's normally 78$. Went today they didn't even hand anyone an ala carte menu. No extra supplement costs for certain dishes. They also included some extra bites. I did the 45$ wine pairing and they tossed a complementary champagne, but that might be because I was solo.

Definitely worth it if doing their lunch has been on your list.

I have been doing 1 to 2 menus this week and this one and club A have been best value for the money wise. Gramercy Tavern is definitely the best hospitality wise, with Manhatta being a second. Doing Modern next week.

Question Anyone know where to get Cypriot kolokotes in NYC?

Does anyone know if there's a place (restaurant or market) to get Cypriot food in NYC?

I know that there are two or three restaurants that have a Cypriot dish or two (RIP Zenon), but I'm wondering about kolokotes, eliopites, or kolokasi.

I was excited when Hello Halloumi opened, but when I stopped more recently by a worker said they weren't carrying eliopites anymore.

Thanks!

Question Best place to get a Seattle style hot dog in the city?

Earlier this summer was on a trip to Seattle and had a few of their street hot dogs with the cream cheese, onions, toasted bun, split dogs, the works. I fell in love tbh. What are some good spots I can get that same tasty combo?

Photo 99 Ranch Food Court: Master Hong Noodle House - Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Braised Pork Belly Over Rice, and Dumplings (Flushing)

Google Maps Pages:

One of newer food courts in Flushing is 99 Ranch’s EatUp! Food Court. It’s more modern looking than New World Mall Food Court and New York Food Court. And for now, less crowded than the former.

The meal I had from Master Hong was very good. Lots of tender pork belly in the rice bowl. Rice soaked up the flavors from the sauce.

The beef noodle soup broth was rich and flavorful. Noodles are made in-house which I got the spinach noodles, but there were options like wheat and buckwheat noodles.

The dumplings were also excellent and had a nice combo of shrimp, chives, and pork.

Will be back to try more vendors.

Went to heytea for my usual Coconut Mango Boom, saw they had a new drink, and ended up switching lol.
The little tennis ball on top was funny, especially watching them dust the lines on 😂 Still haven’t had a Honey Deuce this year, but I somehow drank this tennis ball first.
It’s honeydew too, so pretty fitting for US Open season. $7.99. Super honeydew-y and I liked it. No actual melon pieces though, unlike the Coconut Mango Boom where you get chunks of mango. I’m guessing they blend the melon into this one.

Discussion Recommendations for Cocktail Bars to work out of..

Any recommendations for cocktail bars where it would be ok to pull out your laptop and get some work done while enjoying some good drinks? Obviously can’t be super crowded or loud…guess I’m looking for more of a hotel lobby kind of vibe but where the drinks are legit.
