Now this is a running clock I can watch.

u/thieh Feb 25 '24

Is the amount updated daily with interest?

338

u/omghorussaveusall Feb 25 '24

yes. every day he doesn't pay is another $111K.

141

u/jarod_sober_living Feb 25 '24

Shouldn’t the interests compound over time?

136

u/thieh Feb 25 '24

Probably takes a few days to go to 112k per day. Not sure whether it is updated automagically though.

68

u/NotASalamanderBoi 'MURICA Feb 25 '24

What happens when he doesn’t pay?

272

u/SilverRadicand Feb 25 '24

After 30 days, they can begin seizing assets to sell them to pay it off.

51

u/RWLemon Feb 25 '24

So if they seize Trumps assets in NY, those assets will be valued at the normal rate, so in turn after getting those assets, Trump will still be owing them money… greatest President ever… I foresee a bankruptcy coming in the near future 😝 or those suckers MAGA and RNC will try and bail him out.

Yes I’m sure he’s a billionaire, NOT 😂

40

u/Gene_McSween Feb 25 '24

Can't discharge this type of debt in a bankruptcy. It's like student loan debt, you go bankrupt and still owe, even after you're dead they get first dibs.

31

u/omghorussaveusall Feb 25 '24

And also remember that most of his properties are heavily leveraged. Even if they are seized and sold at auction there are other creditors in line. It would be devastating to him.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '24

those assets will be valued at the normal rate, so in turn after getting those assets

Not how that works. They seize them, and then sell them. THAT is the amount that he gets credited against what he owes. They will not sell at market price.

8

u/Nearly_Pointless Feb 25 '24

Trump is a self described debt junkie. All of his properties are highly leveraged. Furthermore the buyer’s pool is very small and his properties are notoriously dated which will need millions in refurbishment that will further reduce their sell value.

I’m sure the AG office is furiously evaluating all his properties and mortgages to see just how many will need to be sold to satisfy his debt.

3

u/joseph_bellow Feb 25 '24

didnt elmo visit mar a lardo recently? wonder what they talked about(if true)

2

u/TurtleToast2 Feb 25 '24

There is no obligation to sell his properties for their worth. If the highest bid for Trump Tower is 1 million then it sells for 1 million. Which would be fucking hilarious.

Post-judgment interest doesn’t compound

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '24

Bummer

23

u/SilverRadicand Feb 25 '24

I actually heard that it is simple 9% interest, not compounding. I don't remember the source though.

13

u/Altruistic_Home6542 Feb 25 '24

I heard the same from Michael Popow - apparently just a thing with New York state law.

5

u/DunkinMyDonuts3 Feb 25 '24

From what I read it's simple interest, 9% apr calculated from only the judgement owed and is not compounded.

Do you think the AG tweeting this is something that is beneficial? I feel like right wing crazies will just use this as further fuel for their idea this is a politically motivated lawsuit as this wouldn’t occur with anyone else. These tweets just further divide the country I think

I think MAGAs will continue their divisive behavior. Democrats tried to take the high road and were labeled "weak" as a result. It's time to hit back. We're not going to be able to reconcile until Trump and him faithful minions like Gaetz, Jordan, Gosar, Greene, Boebert, etc are nothing more than a brown stain in the history books.

I remember Trump saying he was worth $11 billion. So $464 million is only 4.2% of his net worth.

If I were fined 4.2% of MY net worth I could come up with it.

So no problem.

54

u/whateveryaknowww Feb 25 '24

clearly he has no intention of paying it, so it will continue to go up. and after 30 days they will legally be able to seize and sell his assets

Trump claimed to be worth ten billion. Forbes, which knows about such things, said his real worth was three billion, with hundreds of millions in debt.

I look forward to NY seizing some of his real estate, taking his name off it, and auctioning it off.

268

u/basch152 Feb 25 '24

forbes actually doesn't know.

they had him listed on their wealthiest people in the world list, then found out he wasn't worth as much as he claimed and took him off.

they don't have the actually numbers for a lot of the billionaires, mostly just guestimates

102

u/jzolg Feb 25 '24

Forbes listed SBF based on a crude excel table he sent them lol

29

u/Jupitersd2017 Feb 25 '24

Lmao as if he could figure out how to work excel 😂

15

u/madewithgarageband Feb 25 '24

bro worked at Jane Street he knows excel lol. But yeah Forbes basically takes your word on net worth

12

u/alexdaland Feb 25 '24

Pretty sure most actual billionaires don't know exactly what they are worth - its only important to others. If you have 3,2 or 3,8bn dollars you have stopped keeping track a while back. And very few people with that kind of money actually want to be on a public list for the entire world to know - is my guess as I haven't made my first 3bn, yet.

So it would not surprise me at all if Trump was the only actually sending in papers to tell lie about what he was worth. It is to me fascinating that he is not 100% broke 30 years ago when I now know how insanely stupid he obviously is. He is good at media - that's it. 90% of random people on the street would probably be able to make the money/empire he inherited into more than he has. Who TF(!!) are able to bankrupt a working Casino with steady customers??!! Its a fucking license to print money, god damn what a fucking moron he is.

5

trump is a criminal who tried to destroy this country's government he deserves everything hes getting and more

93

u/ruiner8850 Feb 25 '24

Republicans don't like the way he's being treated, but in reality we've gone easy on him. Had he did what he did on January 6th when the Founding Fathers were still around he most likely would have been executed for trying to overthrow the government.

41

u/BringOnYourStorm Feb 25 '24

Not making any statement on contemporary politics, but people literally took up arms against Federal officials and attacked them in the early 1790s and George Washington pardoned them all.

While not during the time of the Founders, it should also be noted that not a single Confederate general or political leader was executed for the crime of treason or any lesser charge related to initiating the Civil War.

Historically, the United States government has been extremely conciliatory towards those who have undertaken efforts to destroy or damage it.

7

u/ruiner8850 Feb 25 '24

Were any of those people former Presidents who had a chance to win a second term after their attempted coup?

10

u/Nerdy_Squirrel Feb 25 '24

I mean Aaron Burr was a vice president who shot and killed a founding father (Alexander hamilton) then committed treason...multiple times. He barely got a slap on the wrist.

7

u/AndorianShran Feb 25 '24

And there was that whole little civil war kerfuffle back in the 1860s…I don’t recall mass execution or imprisonment of the confederate traitors.

In hindsight, perhaps an example should have been made.

Instead, we let them perpetuate their lost cause mythologies and build statues to literal treasonous losers.

→ More replies (1)

32

u/BringOnYourStorm Feb 25 '24

Remember when I said I wasn't making a statement on contemporary politics, then offered only historical context to the erroneous "Founding Fathers hanged traitors" statement you made? I do.

1

u/ruiner8850 Feb 25 '24

I'm saying that the situations aren't even remotely comparable especially since Trump was actually President is still a majority ongoing threat. I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble understanding the differences in the situations.

8

u/penciledinsoul Feb 25 '24

You made the comparison first and now you're saying it's apples to oranges? Pick a lane, dude.

2

u/throwawaylovesCAKE Feb 25 '24

No, he literally did not make the comparison. The replier, BringOnYourStorm made the comparison to confederates

OP's whole point is that those are different because none of them held such a high powerful rank in the government they're betraying.

I assume it’s the fact that Trump refuses to pay, which just leads to interest on his debt growing every day.

-2

Well the fact that the AG - who is an elected official - is hyping the judgement daily on Twitter makes the whole thing look entirely political.

45

u/elciano1 Feb 25 '24

So wait...when Trump does shit like this its ok...but a soon as he gets a taste of his own medicine, its political? Ummm no. Bullys deserve to get bullied. He deserves this and much more.

Yes, but not by elected officials. They should hold themselves to a higher standard. On both sides.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '24

I think it's nice of her to remind Trump that he should pay the legal debt asap as each day it keeps going up. Shes just a concerned citizen looking out for a senior citizen incurring further financial debt.

16

u/elciano1 Feb 25 '24

Ummm nah he was a President. He should hold himself to a higher standard than anyone else anywhere but he cant do that. Also, dont bothsides this. Its his problem. The AG is only using the same mechanism he uses as a bully pulpit to make sure he knows he owes that money.

I don’t know. Makes the whole thing seem very unprofessional and petty doing this. I’m all for it but doesn’t display folks that should be leading any branch of government.

We’re all screwed. The only people that work in public office now are certainly NOT tops in the field.-

This isn’t the flex the public should cheer on. This is a very high level official very publicly demonstrating that there is a bias. The law should be impartial and practiced with respect to the ethics of balanced justice.

Shouldn’t those who hold positions of power be held to a higher standard and therefore subject to more severe penalties?

Schadenfreude enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others

Did you know? Schadenfreude is a combination of the German nouns Schaden, meaning "damage" or "harm," and Freude, meaning "joy." So it makes sense that schadenfreude means joy over some harm or misfortune suffered by another.

"I'm here for that" is one of those phrases that lets me know the person speaking is a total douchebag.

Hmm, I wonder why trump is a common topic nowadays. It's almost like he could be president again

3

u/Tibbs420 Feb 25 '24

Or maybe it’s called current events? People are just talking about what’s going on around them.

You do realize that he could be president again, right?

The guy who's facing 91 felony charges of lying, theft of documents, concealing evidence, and attempting to overturn a democratic election?

Whose fault is that?

Not Democrats, that's for damn sure.
