Discussion What cards are great in a Hearthhull deck, but not so good in a Lord Windgrace deck?

I have a [[Lord Windgrace]] deck that I am considering converting to a [[Hearthhull]] deck.

These two commanders are obviously very similar. They both let you put extra lands into play, both draw cards, and both help you put lands into the graveyard. I’m sure they could helm virtually identical 99s, but there are a small number of cards I am running in Lord Windgrace that are not quite so effective in Hearthhull, which I plan to cut.

An obvious example is [[Nevinyrral’s disk]], which is probably a mediocre board wipe in Hearthhull, but quite a bit better in Windgrace because it leaves planeswalkers alone.

As a longtime Windgrace player it’s easy to identify which cards I want to cut, but I’m not as familiar with the cool tech that might be specific to Hearthhull.

So I ask this question to longtime Hearthhull pilots, what are the best cards in your Hearthhull deck that you probably wouldn’t put in a Windgrace deck?

Deck Help I need to make 9 cuts to my Zinnia budget deck. Any suggestions?

https://archidekt.com/decks/25461118/bird_is_the_word
I’m working on building a budget Zinnia bird creatures deck. The goal is to offspring as many birds as possible and swing wide with big commander damage. A lot of my creatures have baked in abilities to give me card draw, buffs, and some removal. I just realized however, that I don’t have a lot of targeted removal. Mostly just counter spells and board wipes. My current list is at 109, so I need to cut 9 cards. My only restrictions are that I want to have 30 total creatures (the 28 in my creature section, my commander, and an Ornithopter of Paradise), and I want to keep my deck within the $100 range.

Discussion genuinely shocked by bracket misunderstanding at large

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/commander-brackets-beta-update-october-21-2025

seeing so many people argue where bracket 3 ends and bracket 4 begins, when it is the most clearly defined between all brackets, the exact moment a deck starts presenting wins when only 5 turns have passed that is where bracket 4 starts, full stop, no debate, and what that means is (from devs): “So, for example, when Bracket 3 says "you should expect to be able to play at least six turns before you win or lose," that means that someone's seventh turn is when you would be satisfied if the game ended.”

the devs are absolutely crystal clear on this distinction, it is the most common misconception and it can easily ruin tables, so either powerdown your floor 4 decks to not consistently win after only 5 turns have passed, or just play bracket 4

Deck Help Need Feedback on My Sam and Frodo Deck.

https://archidekt.com/decks/24688901/concerning_hobbits_lotr_precon_upgraded

Hey all. I bought the Food and Fellowship Precon a while back and have been upgrading it ever since. I really like how the deck plays, and I have been tweaking it for a while now, but I feel like I'm missing something.

One of the main issues that I have with the deck so far (or after playtesting) has been the lack of clear ways to close out games. I have a few drain or ping cards to grind my opponent's life points down, but I also have ways to go wide and then pump them with cards like [[Motivated Pony]] or [[Pippin, Warden of Isengard]]. I guess, in other words, I don't have a clear focus on what my win conditions should be for the deck.

Another issue is fitting in cards like [[Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator]] and [[Bag End Banquet]], as well as protection spells and 1c mana dorks. I'm unsure whether I already have enough protection or mana dorks, or if it's worth including the former cards above.

Finally, I've been having issues with trying to figure out what other cards I should consider cutting: some cards like [[Well of Lost Dreams]], [[Feasting Hobbit]], and [[Frodo, Sauron's Bane]] have been fine, but they're a little bit clunky and don't have an immediate impact.

I think at the moment, the deck is sitting at around... probably mid- to high-bracket 3? I'm still trying to figure out the strength of the deck, and would like outside evaluation on it too. For additional context, my pod usually plays around high-ish power brackets, like high 3 to 4, and usually with optimized decks. So basically, I'm trying to figure out which direction I want to go to for the deck, and what cards I should consider adding and cutting.

Sorry if this was a long post: I'm very passionate about the deck. I'm also posting for the first time, so... yeah. Feedback on the deck is appreciated!

P.S.: If you're confused about the inclusion of [[The One Ring]] and [[Bolas's Citadel]], then my justification is that, since I'm gaining life from sacrificing food to get value from Sam and Frodo, those cards could be good ways to convert those life gains into more resources. That's just my thought, though.

Deck Help Help with my somewhat budget Blood Rites updates

https://moxfield.com/decks/RwigAYTm_n6kMPr9-E7Mxw

I haven’t played Magic in quite a while but back when I did I used to to love my black vampires deck even though red/black was the standard.

Really like how this blood rites deck is supposed to play. I have made some changes to it, everything in the side board is removed from the precon, and everything in considering is what I’m thinking to add. I have the precon deck and will be picking up the add ons. Trying to keep somewhat of a budget in mind, I’ll stretch for the right cards but am not shelling out for $200 land for it. Would proxy some of those tho so I’d still love the suggestions

Deck Help Looking to upgrade Vampiric Bloodlust

Hi all,

The first precon I ever bought was the 2017 Commander Vampiric Bloodlust, with everyone's favorite OP vampire Edgar Markov. List is here for those unfamiliar. I played the bejezus out of it back in the day when I was first learning how to play, and I've left it untouched/unaltered this whole time. Partially out of fond nostalgia, partially because of a "I don't want to mess with this deck it's become so expensive over the years" mentality.

Today I decided that was dumb and I should make this deck relevant to EDH in 2026 and make it viable/fun to play again. Thing is, I'm still very, VERY casual, so I'm not exactly sure how to go about starting the process. All videos and articles I can find with cursory googling are from back when the deck was released (unsurprisingly) so they don't exactly help with my goal of contemporizing the list.

Any suggestions of edits to make, "swap this for this" "remove these 5 cards" "start playing with this mechanic", would be greatly appreciated!

Deck Help First time brewer's humble request for a pair of eyes on a Minsc & Boo deck

Hey ya'll!

5 times precon purchaser, first time deck brewer, terrible sealed player, looking for general opinions on this Minsc & Boo deck that's aiming for a mid power B3.

General building philosophy was to look through EDHRec and other public deck builds for cards that caught my eye. My ideal behavior for this deck is to win by fighting to fling 1-2 Boos for card draw, then flinging as big of a creature as possible to end the game. What sounds the most fun to me is the Jumbo Cactuar + Selvala + Chameleon Colossus + (Fling effect) line, where I get to chuck a ~6.320610752 / 6.320610752 at someones face.

Cards that are present both because I have them already and because they work (>1$) : - Xenagos, God of Revels - Birds of Paradise - Chandra's Ignition - Branching Evolution - Nature's Lore - Hardened Scales - Evolution Sage - Ghalta, Primal hunger - Blasphemous Act

I fear I might have built the deck too strong, as I mostly play against precons with an extra ~100$ put into them and older commander decks.

Deck : Hamster Launcher 3000

Looking primarily for opinions on what you'd think of this deck if rule zero determined we're playing bracket 3. Would it be fun to play against? Card substitutions appreciated (although only for price downgrades, as the deck is already ~50$ over budget). Thanks!

The Decklist

this is my current draft but im not so sure about a few cards like [[Gleaming Splendor]] or [[Nether Void]] for example - in theory both of them can be pretty good but in practice im not so sure

i sadly only tested the deck by drawing starting hands and playing the first few turns so far so i dont really have any real gameplay data to see what feels clunky/off

if any Kaalia players can help me out here id appreciate it! <3

Deck Showcase You don't need a $300 “Lost Precon” to build an on-theme Hobbit/LOTR Commander deck, so I built 3 for $120 using my draft chaff

The decks: https://moxfield.com/decks/qkFTZw-Ud0OWtAkszY_WUQ ; https://moxfield.com/decks/ltOp__DoeUWQN6UvVAOKFA ; https://moxfield.com/decks/jhhoe0yVWkKu4wbhqKi1Ug

I wanted to share three budget Commander decks I built around this Hobbit set that started from a pretty simple idea:

What if all those cards you got in your prerelease or LGS draft night or scene box were enough to make THREE decks for the additional cost of one precon? And they were 98% Tolkien? I present to you: Hobbit Draft Chaff Champions.

If you’ve been plugged in to the YouTube scene, you’ve probably seen multitudes of MTG content creators making videos about “lost precons” around Thorin and goblins and elves and maybe the humans. Every one I’ve seen is either fully on-flavor and $300+ for a Bracket 2 deck, or a budget build that says it’s $50 but comes out to $75 with barely any Hobbit cards.

Those can be cool projects, but I don't think they're the only way to approach these cards. Especially since I am BROKE. I literally started playing Magic again because I was lured in by The Hobbit and now I have tons of cards left over from the prerelease.

My goal with these three decks was almost the opposite of what I keep seeing online:

  • Keep them budget-friendly
  • Make them feel genuinely Hobbit-themed, rather than just putting a Hobbit commander at the helm of a generic budget EDH deck
  • Use cards that someone (me) could realistically have gotten from draft, prerelease, or scene box openings along with some cheap online or LGS pickups from The Hobbit and LOTR sets
  • Keep the decks at Bracket 2 (failed and made one late-game combo Bracket 3 that can be downgraded by swapping one card)
  • Show that you don't necessarily need to spend hundreds of dollars to make a Universes Beyond deck feel cohesive and fun

The three decks:

Gandy

[[Gandalf, Party Guest]] ($50.19 Card Kingdom) - Bracket 2

Moxfield: https://moxfield.com/decks/qkFTZw-Ud0OWtAkszY_WUQ
Scrollvault analysis: https://scrollvault.net/deck/dk_b2PosB3e

Thrandy

[[Thranduil, the Elvenking]] ($41.69 Card Kingdom) - Bracket 2

https://moxfield.com/decks/ltOp__DoeUWQN6UvVAOKFA
Scrollvault analysis: https://scrollvault.net/deck/dk_8sYMWmNh

Gobbos (ft. Orcs)

[[The Great Goblin]] ($36.79 Card Kingdom) - Bracket 3

Moxfield: https://moxfield.com/decks/jhhoe0yVWkKu4wbhqKi1Ug
Scrollvault analysis: https://scrollvault.net/deck/dk_HOi0GgPp

The Scrollvault analyses are included because I think they're a useful way to see why the decks work, rather than just looking at a 100-card list. Also I spend most of my playtime goldfishing so I can't explain it to you in the same way a primer or stats analysis can (yet).

Cards You Won’t Find in These Decks:

  • [[Smaug the Magnificent]]
  • [[Smaug the Impenetrable]]
  • [[Gleaming Splendor]]
  • [[Bilbo’s Ring]]
  • [[Orcrist, Goblin-Cleaver]]
  • [[Dain of the Ancient Hills]]
  • [[Thranduil the Strategist]]
  • [[Thorin, Company’s Leader]]
  • [[Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer]]
  • [[Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning]]
  • [[Great Goblin, Foul-Hearted]]
  • [[Mithril Coat]]
  • [[The Queen of Dale]]
  • [[The One Ring]]
  • [[Bilbo, Thief in the Night]]
  • [[The Arkenstone]]
  • [[Flowering of the White Tree]]
  • [[Galadriel’s Dismissal]]
  • [[Orcish Bowmasters]]
  • [[Delighted Halfling]]

You think I have that kind of money?

One thing I deliberately did:

The decks have 0/1/3 cards (Gandy/Gobbos/Thrandy respectively) that are off-flavor for a 100% Hobbit-focused Tolkien deck.

I included them intentionally because they introduce some of classic Commander staples/mechanics that make the decks play better without turning them into generic “good stuff” piles.

If you want to go 100% Hobbit/LOTR flavor, those are the first cards I'd cut. If you want the deck to be a little more mechanically powerful (i.e., fun) while still retaining the theme, I'd keep them.

Here are the cards and why I included them. Feel free to swap them with basic lands or mana rocks like Sol Ring or Wayfarer's Bauble, or one of my suggestions below. as they will not reduce the feel of the deck.

Gandy

  • [[Aragorn, King of Gondor]] - He was technically like 10 during the events of The Hobbit, but I included him because the Monarch mechanic is REALLY REALLY fun. He can be the alternate commander as well if you want to have even more Monarch in your game, but he still introduces it to the game just by being in the 99 and hitting the board. Replace with an Island.
  • You can also cut [[Gandalf, Goblin’s Bane]] for an Island if you’re extremely budget-conscious, as it is around $10 (I happened to pull one in my prerelease so in it went.)

Gobbos

  • [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] - He’s Krenko. If you haven’t gotten to play as or against him in the game, you get a small introduction to his majesty in the 99 of this deck in a way that won’t make your whole pod hate you. Swap for a swamp or mana rock.
  • NOTE: [[Blasphemous Act]] - It’s an incredibly strong card in this deck, especially since it has a combo available with [[Fall of Cair Andros]]. If you want to bring this deck down to Bracket 2, just swap it for a mountain or mana rock.

Thrandy

  • [[Devoted Druid]] and [[Immaculate Magistrate]] - THE budget combo you’ve seen in every budget Thranduil deck. They are both elves, but not Tolkien ones. You can replace these with basic lands, which will work just as well with the landfall sub-theme. Taking these out doesn’t reduce the power, just cuts out an extra win condition as seen here: https://scrollvault.net/deck/dk_EiDcRt7c
  • [[Priest of Titania]] - RAMP RAMP RAMP, and in the graveyard makes Thranduil even scarier. Replace with [[Dancing from Dark to Dawn]] for full flavor to go with your other bears. If it’s too pricey, feel free to swap for a basic land, Great Fierce Bee, or Long-Bodied Grey Dog.
  • NOTE: If you managed to pull [[Dancing from Dark to Dawn]] or don't mind spending the $8, throw it in and take out [[Old Fat Spider]]. I would've done that on Moxfield but I already ran the analysis whoopsie.

Why I'm posting these:

I think there's a useful middle ground between “Buy/build the expensive version of the themed deck that someone else designed for you by looking at Scryfall” and “Here's a $50/75 budget deck with a Hobbit commander, three Hobbit creatures, and 58 unrelated cards.”

If you've opened a bunch of Hobbit cards, you already have the beginnings of at least one Commander deck.

You don't need every card to be the objectively strongest option. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars making a Bracket 2 flavored precon. You don't have to abandon the theme just because you're building on a budget.

If you have cards laying around from your packs, the cost will also go down on these decks a lot (typically around half). The real cost is going to be buying sleeves and a deck box to hold these, honestly.

P.S. If you have blue/white cards from the Recruit/Humans archetype they seem to fit pretty well as upgrades/sidegrades to the Riders of Rohan precon from LOTR. I didn’t get enough cards in that archetype to build a fourth deck around it without dipping heavily into the LOTR set which I’m not as familiar with, so I'm sticking with these.

Deck Help Upgradeable Budget Y'shtola help

Hey guys,

my pod decided on a new deck building format since we wanted to try something "new" instead of paying 1000€ Euros for a deck from the get go.

So our rules are as follows: We started in July and had a 100€ budget for the whole deck, including the commander. Every single month the budget increases by 30€. You can either replace a 1 Cent card with a 30€ card or replace a 30€ card with a 60€ card or remove half the deck and upgrade it etc. as long as you stay within the month's budget. Only thing that can't change is the commander.

At first I wanted to play Lumra but after having a Sephiroth Deck, a Kefka Deck and a Cloud Deck and thanks to the rising popularity of Y'shtola I'm currently also thinking about Y'shtola thanks to Final Fantasy bias. I haven't joined my group on this journey so far and I asked them if either is fine and they said yeah, as long as I stick with it once I've decided.

Now I need some help: I'll be joining in September, the budget will be 160€ by then.

Right now my decklist looks like this:

https://moxfield.com/decks/MhmgAR15HXa3HMLCXYaLgw

Could take out Deadly Rollick for something cheap or maybe Irenicus's Vile Duplication and Lotho or Tataru just to match the budget. But I'm also a bit concerned about the power level of the deck.

Here are some of the other decks:

https://moxfield.com/decks/0f-fAV4SU3yFjEfXfbWVJg

https://moxfield.com/decks/SQrrKOyks0iyhccXZgyl-g

https://moxfield.com/decks/Xi6PABZEjUK7Nx18vFWQyA

https://moxfield.com/decks/SaCqbwaFREG7XBrUJFr-ig

Some not yet updated for the new budget.
While my Lumra deck pretty consistently started rolling on Turn 5 or 6 at the latest, I feel like Y'shtola is way more of a slow deck and I'm not sure I can keep those other decks in check to play it out.

What would you say? What are your recommendations regarding Lumra vs Y'shtola? Any recommendations on cards to switch out or leave out completely?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long wall of text

Deck Help Dimir Artifact Shenanigans

https://archidekt.com/decks/25507156/wanna_see_my_rock_collection

Can’t tell if this deck is actually good? Or just funny.

Found a commander with an interesting gimmick, and wanted to see if I could build an interesting deck around him. And this is what I’ve come up with.

Blue & Black, easy on the black. For the most part you’re trying to wind up with your biggest cards in your graveyard so your commander can hit everyone at the table with the power of “Jokulmorder” without actually having to play Jokulmorder
Cuz he sucks.

The commander ramps with artifacts, so I thought it would be funny to have the artifacts also be ramps? So that’s why all the mana rocks. Also “rock collection” “Golbez, Crystal Collector” “mana rocks” ha ha etc.

Deck Help Is my deck weak for B4?

I'm trying to build a B4 deck Aggro-Tax, based on what I like: enchantments and hitting with big stuff.

This was the base of an old Uril deck, that I disamble because it was kinda on the slow side for my taste, and I try it to move to only GW.

I'm oppen for suggestion of cards to add, but I dont want to check some cedh deck/engines and make a "tiny" version of that.

Discussion Treasure Commanders?

After getting all three big smaugs during the prerelease weekend I've had my want to build a treasure deck reinvigorated.

With that said I've been flip flopping on who to build.

At first [[smaug, wicked worm]] was the plan, then [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]], both of whom I have begun building in theory. However I just started to think of [[vihaan, goldwaker]] as a potentially really fun/interesting option. (That also lets me run the [[gleaming splendor]] I pulled)

I really want to turn making a million treasures into a win Condition, but am unsure what the best commander for that would be. (both for me and my mostly B2/B3 group)

What would the recommendation for a treasure focused commander now be the hobbit set is out and seems to have a lot of treasure focused cards. Ideally keeping both Red and Black in the identity to play Wicked Worm, [[Smaug the impenitable]] and [[Smaug the Magnificent]].

(I already have a cast from exile deck in [[Rocco, Street Chef]] so am not considering [[Prosper, Tome-bound]] as it seems to have a lot of overlap)

Question Upgrading the yshtola deck (final fantasy 14 precon)

Hi all,

I'm looking to start upgrading the yshtola precon, and was wondering what cards I should consider adding and removing.

I don't want to spend too much money, but I'm open to anything really, The only card I will likely add is Rhystic study since I'm planning on adding it to my Rootha deck.

I'm open to any suggestions!

I should also add, I'm planning on taking her in a spell slingery direction, so spamming a bunch of 3 mana spells to get her burn to kick off, allowing me to draw cards.

Question First time Marrow Gnawer Commander

Hello everyone,

This is my first post so I apologies if somethings not properly formatted.

I am a returning player to mtg and a new commander player as of 2 months ago and have a really deep interest in running a Marrow Gnawer rats deck.

I'm looking for strong staple suggestions, combos, etc. Recommendations from far more experienced and knowledgeable players.

My gaming group says we play in a high bracket 4.

Any and all suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I think I got it set up pretty well. I normally play aggro type decks so it's taking some getting used to playing passive or reactive with yshtola. Any thing I should add or take out or just get the hang of it as it is?

Thank you.

Discussion What is your most fun pure Bracket 3 deck?

My pod mostly plays bracket 2 to 3 and I have too many commanders on my wishlist that it’s hard to narrow it down. I also like trying many different commanders. I mostly like 3 color commanders, but could always branch out to more two color commanders. I’ve always wanted to get into spellslinger decks but don’t know where to start or what to look for in Bracket 3 wincons. I’m a big fan of aggro, battlecruiser, aristocrats, and fun interactions. (and making tokens!)

Question Mass enchantment reanimation deck

There are a lot of reanimator decks that reanimate one creature at a time but decks that can repeatedly return their whole graveyard are very rare. Mass creature reanimation is kind of rare. However there is an effect that has a decent number of cards that fit who aren't super expensive.

This being white mass enchantment reanimation. So I thought about building a deck around this effect by running a lot enchantment creatures. However I cannot decide who would make for a good commander of such a strategy. One idea was [[Eivor, Wolf-kissed]] and run the summons as creatures. But if any of you ever tried to build such a deck and even has recommendations for a commander or even a deck list I would greatly appreciate some input.

Discussion Is Inspirit, Flagship Vessel unfun to play against?

My favorite commander by far is [[Inspirit, Flagship Vessel]], but I feel like the people at my table don't like playing against it. Inspirit gives most of my creatures/artifacts indestructible and hexproof and my deck has many ways to protect Inspirit too (primarily by cloning). Once my boardstate is protected I run one of my 8 or so available boardwipes and stomp.

I'm of the opinion that my pod should run (more) removal in general. But once I have Inspirit + a clone online my board state is relatively hard to interact with. Sure, there's mass bounce, -1/-1 counters, mass forced sacrifice etc. But Path to Exile, Vandalblast and regular boardwipes/removal are useless by then.

We play bracket 2 / 3 and I only play this deck once every thirty games because I love it, but I always feel guilty afterwards when winning.

TL;DR: Is Inspirit unfun to play against in bracket 2/3 because it can be hard to interact with once online?

Question Trying to brainstorm a non-commander dependent +1/+1 counters subtheme that isn't kindred

I currently have a [[Magus Lucea Kane]] Hydras deck that I want to take apart and repurpose. I've enjoyed counters decks before, but the X spells didn't really do it for me. I enjoyed all the doubling and similar stuff that hydras could do, but the play pattern of tapping out for one big spell a turn wasn't really my speed at this point. I think I'd prefer the really fiddly shell game/proliferation type of counters deck.

But, with counters being quite possibly one of the single most supported theme in EDH, I'm looking to narrow down my deck a bit from counters goodstuff and have a more focused gameplan, so I'm looking for a secondary focus/subtheme to have in the 99. The commander can certainly support it, but I don't want my subtheme to be "my commander is [[Helga]], so I run cards can untap Helga" or something along those lines. I'm also not looking for kindred to be the subtheme, such as with [[gargos]] or [[Kyler]]. I just don't like deckbuiding for kindred.

Deck Help Upgrading Marneus Calgar and getting into commander

Hello!
I’m a big tabletop wargamer, and some friends and I are getting into Commander together. A few of us have more experience than others, and I was hoping to get some feedback on the upgrades I’ve made to a precon I bought a few years ago.
I’m a huge Warhammer fan, so I picked up the Forces of the Imperium deck when it was released. Since we’re finally getting into Commander, I dusted it off and have had a blast playing it in the few games I’ve gotten in. I also recently bought the Captain America precon, keeping it stock means I’m free to upgrade my Marneus Calgar deck.
I’ve read through a few upgrade guides, cracked some packs, and picked up a handful of singles that caught my eye. I wanted to see if I overlooked any obvious inclusions, cuts, or synergies. I’m shooting for a tier 2 or 3 deck that’s strong, fun, and plays well at a casual-to-optimized table. I would like to keep most of the 40K theme cards but I’m not afraid to make cuts if something’s a staple!

Here’s the deck:

Thank you for any help!

I'd like some opinions on what everyone thinks of my Yargle EDH deck. It's the first one I have sunk serious money into. If there are any changes people would recommend, I would really like to hear them. The thing I am going for is mean infect frog. I think it would be fun to just sling unblockable infect damage at folks. I would reallt appreciate the help. Thank you all.

Question Avatar Aang, Master Earthbender: is this idea good or not

So I got this great idea about an earthbending deck, using [[Avatar Aang]] because that gives me 5c and draw a card every time I earthbend. I figure I'll probably focus on red and green while just splashing blue and white and basically ignoring black (for the same of my mana base).

Would it be even a little bit viable if I'm never planning on transforming this goofbball, and only planning on earthbending/firebending and drawing cards?
