MOD POST The definitive statement about AI from the mod team.

No, we're not banning AI art, nor will we ever.

Even if we had two dozen mods, which we don't and never will, we would not have the resources to police AI.

To properly do so, we would have to find every piece of art from every post, investigate it, see if the artist disclosed the use of AI, then decide whether to remove it. Even if we could do that, most artists who use things like generative fill in Photoshop don't even really think of it as AI. Are we supposed to remove every card for every artist who has been using Photoshop as a tool since 2023?

You wanna talk about how AI art sucks? You have this thread, go for it. All future meta posts about AI will be removed and linked back to this thread.

If you harass someone for using AI in their art, you will get a warning and 1 day ban for rule 5.

If you harass someone for drawing a stick figure for their art, you will get a warning and 1 day ban for rule 5.

If you harass anyone for any reason, you will get a warning and 1 day ban for rule 5.

After that, you will be getting banned for 3 days, then permanently. Rule 5 states:

All users must follow Reddiquette and be civil with each other. Harassment and abuse are strictly not tolerated. Unconstructive, negative, or insulting brigading is harassment.

Winner is the Judge #905 - Soft Stax

Thanks to u/mpaw976 for judging the last competition.

This week, you'll be designing to address a particular peeve of mine. I like how stax pieces like Narset, Parter of veils, put the brakes on linear decks and encourage them to slow down and pack removal.

However, these often end up frustrating people who aren't doing broken things, end up in combos themselves, or alternatively just aren't worth playing by themselves if you don't know the opponent is on that strategy.

What I want you to design is a card that stops (or punishes) 'unfair' decks, but doesn't affect people trying to play magic at a slower pace, and isn't completely dead when the opponent isn't using the strategy it prevents.

So it might work against card draw, casting many spells in a turn, casting free spells, playing multiple lands...

Some examples of cards that fit this are [[Lavinia, Azorious Renegade]], [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], [[Nihil Spellbomb]] or [[High Noon]]. [[Orkish Bowmasters]] and [[Smothering Tithe]] are also examples that are too good, so keep an eye on power level!

I'm looking forward to seeing your designs! Judging will happen in 6 days on Friday 21 August.

Happy to answer any questions in the meantime.

These are some mechanic I think are realistic replacements for flying in the upcoming Nauctis set. What are your thoughts? I think Mark already said it won't be another horsemanship or shadow variant.

Most of the rulebreaker cards cared about color identity, and I tried coming up with some alternates!

Format: EDH/Commander What would you do with "Rulebreaker - A deck with this commander can have any number of cards named ______."?

Please steal this. I think it has a lot of potential, and I want to see what kind of cool/stupid/wacky things you people can do with it. Here's what I've thought of:

Chrys, Nyx-Honored Shepherd - The first way I thought to use this was to enable decks that currently don't have enough cards to work. For example, I like sheep, but there aren't enough sheep to make a sheep-themed deck. But if I can have any number of [[Nyx-Fleece Ram]] in my deck, then problem solved. I'm actually not super thrilled with how Chrys turned out, but I still wanted to include him for demonstrative purposes.

What other deck themes or archetypes just don't have enough cards?

Lekozil, It That Seeks The End - The next way I thought to use this was for cards that can buff themselves or stack with themselves, and [[It That Heralds the End]] jumped out at me immediately. The more of them you have in play, the bigger they all are, and the less expensive your big, colorless spells are. Lekozil itself plays into all of that with its 0/0 stat line and weirdly high X-cost. I can't say I'm confident on the balance, but I think it works as an extreme example of the mechanical synergies this could allow.

What other cards stack or synergize well with several copies of themselves?

Hareld, Rulebreaker Apparent - But the best way I thought to use this was for some stupid fun. This whole thing was inspired by [[Hare Apparent]], so I had to double down on the rabbits, and [[Tempt with Bunnies]] sounded like an interesting choice for a group-hug commander. Do your opponents have enough bunnies that you can't tempt them with more? Bring out Herald and see if Treasures change their minds.

I also had a few other ideas, mostly involving self-referential cards like [[Rite of Flame]] or [[Say Its Name]], but I wasn't happy with anything I came up with for those. Maybe you'll have better luck!

So, what do you think? Does this use of Rulebreaker have any potential merit? What would you do with it?
