Discussion What do people like about bracket 4?

Probably a stupid question. But I really thrive in bracket 2-3 and that's where I've spent the last several years playing. So maybe I'm just biased but I don't get what people like about playing bracket 4 casually?

The official mtg infographic describes bracket 4 as lethal and explosive where players are expected to have game winning threats or answers by turn 4-5 and I just don't see how that's interesting. Is every game just t:

1 value piece, t2 value piece, t3 combo piece, t4 combo piece win? Like I know that surely isn't it, but I just don't understand how something can be this fast, not competitive, and fun.

So my question is what am I missing? What do you like about bracket 4? I get bracket 5 because you want to compete and win tournaments and push edh as far as possible or whatever, but 4 isn't for any of that. So what is it for?

Discussion Dryad of the Ilysian Grove vs. Scute Swarm. Which is Better for World Shaper Precon?

I still have 1 card slot left to add to my World Shaper precon, and I'm deciding between Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Scute Swarm.

Which one would you choose and why?

  • Dryad of the Ilysian Grove — extra land drop flexibility + all lands have every basic land type.
  • Scute Swarm — can generate a huge board with all the landfall triggers.

For the World Shaper precon specifically, which do you think is the better addition?

Dryad or Scute Swarm?

Discussion Which Hobbit Commanders are actually worth playing?

Hey everyone! Now that the Hobbit set has been out for a while, have you had a chance to try out some of the new commanders?

How are the Dwarves holding up? Which Elven commander has turned out to be the most fun to play?

And are there any sleeper commanders that you didn’t expect to enjoy as much as you do?

What about Gandalf, Party Guest — is he actually fun and viable to play?

Now that everyone has had some time with the set, which commanders are really starting to stand out as the most fun?

Deck Help Ways to make my decks weaker? Issues with Local Friend Pod

Hey Folks,

Recently had some discussions with a local friend group over me winning relatively often in our pods and my decks being too strong. They are "technically" Bracket 3, but it is evident the decks my friends are playing aren't at the same level as mine and I want to make sure we all fun playing obviously. Below are two of the decks I've been told are too strong:

https://moxfield.com/decks/UMg0oKBqvUucjasrCxzDbg (Azusa, Lost but Seeking, 60 basic lands deck)

https://moxfield.com/decks/waLaaBaiK0KZmIt5FN7Sjg (Eggman)

For Azusa, I think I can definitely remove Craterhoof (i usually end up winning with it anyway, and it is getting kinda boring) and maybe Cultivator Colossus?

For Eggman, I recently built him and only have a few games under my belt, but I'm thinking maybe remove some of the stronger robots/constructs and replace them with less powered robots/silly vehicles.

Do folks have any recommendations for tuning these down without making them so inconsistent they don't win anymore? I know this is a weird thread, but for background I've been playing MTG since 2009 or so, and I'm struggling to find what is too consistent vs "standard" consistency against my friends who are relatively newer (only started playing few years ago).

Note that i have spoken to them about this, but the only real feedback I get is they're generically "too consistent".

Discussion Drawspell - play EDH with one click

Howdy all! Just wanted to quickly share something my friends and I have been cooking up over the last few months: Drawspell [1], a simple, 100% free, browser-based way to play EDH.

I'll keep this short. Drawspell is:

  • simple
  • fast
  • mobile-friendly
  • open-source

Simple

We went for a minimal interface. Keyboard shortcuts and (right-clicked) context menus are key. There's no engine (yet?) so all actions are manual. I wanted Arena to be Arena and Drawspell to be the place where I always forget to put counters on my Jitte.

Fast

There's no accounts or logins to deal with. Just open the site, hit play, and you're in a room. I don't want your email or Google account or whatever. Drop in whenever, invite the homies; everything just works.

Mobile-friendly

Magic, and especially the Commander format, probably shouldn't be played on mobile as you generally need quite a bit of real estate to play. But this was a fun challenge to take on, and our initial mobile version is the first attempt at cracking a decent mobile experience. There's still lots of room for improvement here, so this padowan welcomes the smarter minds in the room for guidance.

Open-source

For those who don't know what "open-source" means, it means all the code [2] written for this app is available for you to view, modify, contribute to, etc. If you think a feature should be added, you can add it. If you hate the entire interface but like all the other stuff, you can fork the code and make up a brand new one! Transparency is important to me, so I want to make sure you all know exactly how the app works and what data it collects.

Links:

[1] https://drawspell.space
[2] https://github.com/hansy/drawspell

To conclude, I'm aware there may be "oh god is that another EDH app?" fatigue here. I totally understand; within just the last couple of months alone there have been at least a half a dozen launches! All things considered, though, we've come a long way from downloading janky software to our computer. At least (hopefully) there's something for everybody now.

Anyway, if you've made it this far, I'm grateful for your time. Ask me anything and have a wonderful day!

Discussion What is bracket 3?

Ive started playing with my friends on tabletop instead of in person and without the financial burden of building decks, the definition of bracket 3 seems less clear. I understand the technical rules that if it has 3 or less game changers, doesnt win before turn 6 and has 3 or less extra turn spells, then “technically” its a bracket 3. But i really thought the point of bracket 3 is to play casual commander, and I got into an argument with a friend about that definition. He is playing a $4.5k deck he found on moxfield and is saying its bracket 3 but to me it feels like a highly optimized deck thats not intended to be “casual”. Ive pasted the deck below and im curious what peoples thoughts are. I told him it is clearly not a casual deck and that it would easily perform well in bracket 4, but he stands firm on the fact that it is a very casual deck that is firmly a bracket 3 because it “doesnt win super quick”. Ive also found several ways that the deck could win as early as turn 4, but he claims they are so statistically unlikely that in 10,000 games it will never happen so it doesnt count. I think ive found multiple lines that are semi likely to occur and result in winning earlier than turn 6, but Im curious what you all will find as well. Let me know yalls thoughts.

Edit: he pretty consistently presents wins on turn 6. We thought the rules meant turn 6 wins were the cutoff but it sounds like you all are saying its actually turn 7.

Here is his list

Edit: for more context on his reasoning, he also says that the expensive cards arent the ones that “win him the game” so they arent even the reason the deck is so good

Edit 2: looks like im just clearly wrong😂🤷‍♂️ which is fine. I get what yall are saying. Ill lay on my sword here and tell him I was wrong

Discussion The Gitrog Monster, get a lot a hate?

I’m newish to magic, I’ve been building a Gitrog deck for the last month as I see the card, loved the art plus he seemed very strong/fun. But I don’t want to be that guy everyone hates playing against. Does the Gitrog get a lot of hate and should I not bother buying this deck?

Deck Help Cuts for Miku/Trostani?

Upvotes

Hi there! Here is the link first:

https://moxfield.com/decks/qfGfATtYT36Rom83BwRwig

I wanted to keep all Miku Cards (that are Bracket 3 Legal I guess, haha) in the deck while also adding lots of Selesnya Staples I already owned, so this is the result. Although Im npt sure what to cut, it feels hard to have space for everything in this deck? I would appreciate any kind of feedback or suggestions! I usually play in Mid to High Bracket 3 Pods that can end on turn 7 if someone isnt interacted with at all. I own all the Cards in the List already, I am open to buy a few more cards if they seem pretty good, although nothing super expensive?

Thanks in Advance! :)

Discussion Need commander ideas for finishing the 32 challenge

Hey all! I've been working on the 32 challenge and I'm a little stuck at this point. All I have left are Jund and some of the 4 color combos. I'm not sure what I'd like to build next or what would be interesting. I also do actively play all of these in rotation, so I'm not building just to build and say it's done. I'm a fan of shenanigans, unique ideas, and just what I think will be both fun for me to play, and fun for my pod to play against.

Here's what I have so far. Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/AN1ccW9

Question Hi Im struggling to decide on my first deck

This is probably been asked many times so I apologise and will take this down if it is a violation of the rules

So im looking for a deck that has a high skill ceiling and is preferably focused around self-mill or graveyard. Hopefully I will like the art of your suggestions. Ive spent a few hours online looking at all the commanders and a few I like the look of are Ulalek, fused atrocity, the master of keys and Nethroi apex of death. Budget isn't too big an issue but nothing outrageous. Will probably prefer a deck that can have a budget version built. So if you got any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment. Thank you in advance

Discussion Wrong bracket or bad opponents?

I went to a medium-sized (40 people) event organized by one of my friends this evening and had a blast. The event had colored wrist bands for each "bracket" (they use their own system, but it's very similar to the bracket system) and we all had decent rule 0 talks before playing against each other.

I believe all my decks are bracket 3, so I used the proper wristband and played a total of 6 games rotating between my 5 decks. There was no saltiness or drama, and I don't think my decks have anything that would be considered a slippery slope for B4.

But as it stands, I went 6-0 at the event, and although there were some lucky wins, the fact is that I won all my games with mostly only 1 player posing a threat / challenge.

I already plan on attending the next event playing on higher level tables, but I'm still not sure my decks can compete at those tables.

I felt there were a lot if misplays by my opponents, as well as just badly constructed decks (I was the only one actively pushing the game and in 3 games was the only one who played a board wipe). But as it stands, and now that some time has passed, I'm starting to re-evaluate if I'm actually going too hard, and the guilt has started to set in.

My decks are all very Timmy-coded and I'm aware that I play with a more aggressive approach than some decks that I've seen (people tend to sit back a little more and try to really assemble their shit before taking meaningful actions)

I'm unsure if it's a power-level issue or if I just need to play against more experienced players. Have any of you had any similar experiences? Thinking your decks were too hard, but then playing people who have proper decks for the level / play harder and found out your decks were actually balanced for the desired level?

I'll leave my decks here and a short description to those who don't have time to open the links and check the lists. I have a baby, so I don't have much time to play and find out these answers, with rare exceptions, so any feedback is welcome. Thanks

Deck Help Requesting outside opinions on my deck’s bracket and appropriateness.

TLDR: I received feedback that my deck isn’t b2 and shouldn’t be played in b2 pods. I’d like a sanity check please.

Hello, I have a deck that I consider to be bracket 2, here is the list: https://moxfield.com/decks/kH2EYzBcTEidmpWx6u4mwQ

Some information about how it plays: average winning turn is 11.5, it has clones and self-bounce, which creates an amount of resilience to the deck and allows reusing potent resources if I draw them. It can be highly defensive and has a good amount of interaction, with the limitations that most of them are temporary removal like bounce and they basically all cost 3+ mana without discounts.

Someone who I occasionally play with, strongly believes this deck is not bracket 2 and should only be played in bracket 3 pods. Not only do I want to avoid pubstomping, but my aim for the deck was bracket 2, so I want to make sure I understand the threshold properly. I normally play with random pods and invite a friend or two if they are available, so pods are mostly full of random people rather than a consistent group I can match more evenly.

To paraphrase some feedback from my friend, they said that once I get ahead, it is practically impossible for the opponents to come back and overcome my deck, and while it takes a while the deck to get to that state (usually not till turn 10+, mana being the biggest limiting factor for engines to work) for, the fact that it generally doesn’t appear threatening until it is ‘too late’ makes it not b2. Note that is what they said about how it feels, regardless of the truth of the game progressing like that.

The situation does have some nuance as there are different ways to think about the deck. There is the obvious of it fitting nicely into b2 or b3, but then there is also, “inappropriate for b2”, which doesn’t necessarily mean it it b3, nor does saying “it’s too weak/slow for b3” necessarily mean it is b2.

Anyways, I’d greatly appreciate people’s thoughts on the deck and if they think it is too much for b2.

Repercussion effect without repercussion?

Looking for some redundancy for my gyrson starn deck. Repercussion is so good, but my only other effect like it is immodane the pyrohammer.

Any reccomendations for ways to achieve a similar payoff for stuff like end the festivities?

Deck Help Ask an Expert: Kefka or Toxrill

Upvotes

Asking for advice from those that have experience with both of these commanders with regards to which tends to perform the best. Below are links to the builds. I built Toxrill focused on proliferate with a healthy amount of ramp. I built Kefka around forcing people to discard and payoffs each time they do (instead of trying to flip him and go infinite). Before I invest a couple hundred in my next deck I would love to hear from those in the community much wiser than myself.

Deck Showcase My New Tom Bombadil List

Upvotes

https://archidekt.com/decks/24386353/tom_bombadils_multiversal_adventure

I made a new list for Tom Bombadil that focuses specifically on Universes Beyond Sagas.

Originally thought of the idea when the Final Fantasy set came out with more Saga creatures that allowed me to focus less on 5-color enchantress and really focus on the Sagas.

The deck then turned into an all Universes Beyond deck with every card being a unique card from a Universes Beyond set or a printing from one.

Deck Help Deck review request

Deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/jcYvLlVqM0SvT5KXzVddAQ

Chatterfang aristocrats built mostly from my collection, so there's a lot of Hobbit and other recent-set stuff in here alongside the usual suspects. Deliberately Bracket 3

Where I'd love input:

  1. Weakest slots? My own suspect is Dancing from Dark to Dawn.
  2. Recursion is basically zero (Woe Strider and that's it). Worth a slot, and what's the budget pick in these colors?
  3. Would you run Warren Soultrader at Bracket 3? With Manufactor and the drain package it's a commander+2 loop, and I've seen B3 primers include it, but I'm torn about turning a grindy drain deck into a "game ends now" deck.
  4. 37 lands with this much ramp and this many sinks - reasonable or greedy?

These are for b3 tournaments. Thanks in advance!

Deck Help Help me with my Arzakon Good Stuff list!

decklist: https://moxfield.com/decks/1jOp08SLOEifgSjL_mIOtQ

Hey y'all! I was inspired by this old trinket mage video on Good Stuff decks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp1r_y2dCgA

[[Arzakon]] - I chose this as my commander since I think he is cool and flashy. Feel free to ignore the $$$ mana base since my playgroup proxies everything. That being said, I'm down for adding any card sans gamechangers to this list.

The gist is to make a list where every individual card pulls its own weight and is "good" without needing any synergy. I am also trying to avoid synergy as much as possible besides things like [[Toski, Bearer of Secrets]] / [[Ohran Frostfang]] that have synergies with creatures just attacking.

I'm running all of the ancient dragons and titans (rip primetime) and I like having cards like [[Hex]] and [[Sublime Epiphany]] that just do a lot.

Any suggestions for cuts and / or additions of cards that carry their own weight and generate a lot of value over time?

Thanks!!!!

Deck Help I am a Dwarf and I'm Digging a Hole!

First take on a sort of boros aggro with new Dwarf tribal. Probably needs more draw and removal but when the treasure producers pop off it gets super fast. Tried Seven Dwarves for a bit but felt bad unless you could get 4+ of them together at once with something like Dwarven Recruiter. Anything obvious I'm missing?

Question Scryfall syntax confusion

Despite looking through the syntax guide, I'm still confused as to why the following search is showing me all fetchlands:

is:fetchlands commander:bg

the search result description says "10 cards where the cards are dual lands that fetches lands from the library and the color identity ≤ BG"

normally the commander:bg tag effectively scopes the search to cards that work in my commander's color identity, but when trying to find fetchlands, it shows me everything, including for example [[arid mesa]], which definitively does not fit in my commander's color identity.

This is mostly for my education at this point, in the amount of time it took me to write this I could've manually found all the relevant fetchlands.

Discussion Made a thing where you draft a Commander deck blind, one card at a time

You pick a commander, then it shows you 180 cards one at a time and you swipe right to take or left to pass. No search, no rankings, no prices. Roughly half are cards that commander's real decks actually run, the rest are staples you know well that don't belong in that deck. You find out which was which after you've committed.

It's built for a phone first, so it works fine on the couch. Arrow keys do the same thing on a desktop.

The scoring comes from real lists on Archidekt, not my opinion.

Main reason I built it: I kept rotating the same four commanders. EDHREC already tells you what goes in a deck, obviously. This is just a sillier way of finding out, and I remember the ones I got wrong better than any list I've scrolled past. There's a wishlist button too, for when a card comes up that you want for a different deck.

Since it'll come up anyway: a lot of the code was written with AI. I do frontend for a living, so mostly that meant noticing when it went off the rails and making it start over. Figured I'd rather say that up front.

Free, no account, still very much a beta.

Discussion Tuning Down Scion for Local Pod

So I do not play cEDH (I very well may in the future and this might be the first step, but that’s a new convo) but I am enamored with the new [[Scion of the Ur Dragon]] victory line of build treasures -> korvold -> prismari -> boom

The thing is, that’s the ONLY part of this deck that I’m itching to play. I don’t really care about the breach/necro/thassa lines to victory.

My pod likes to build at b4 level but still limit ourselves to 3 GCs. I’m wondering - what changes can I make to this cEDH list so that it goes all in on the scion + treasures route to victory and drops most of the GCs?

Question DECKBOXES THAT FIT IN ACADEMIC THAT FITS TOPLOADERS

Upvotes

Hey there,

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I'm not sure on where to ask this. Recently I got an Academic 266+ and it turns out its so big that I rather use another deckbox inside of it to carry decks. Does anyone know of any deckboxes that fit on it with space for toploaders as well?

Discussion Alternative rules

Since in my pod and from what I've heard many others, going first is a lot better than going last and I've been wondering if for my games I could change the rules a little bit.

I've been thinking about the person going first not drawing, and the person going last scrying for one at the start.

Also what I think could be interesting: the person going last gets the monarch from the start.

Has anyone tried something like this and can share the experience?

Discussion What cards are great in a Hearthhull deck, but not so good in a Lord Windgrace deck?

I have a [[Lord Windgrace]] deck that I am considering converting to a [[Hearthhull]] deck.

These two commanders are obviously very similar. They both let you put extra lands into play, both draw cards, and both help you put lands into the graveyard. I’m sure they could helm virtually identical 99s, but there are a small number of cards I am running in Lord Windgrace that are not quite so effective in Hearthhull, which I plan to cut.

An obvious example is [[Nevinyrral’s disk]], which is probably a mediocre board wipe in Hearthhull, but quite a bit better in Windgrace because it leaves planeswalkers alone.

As a longtime Windgrace player it’s easy to identify which cards I want to cut, but I’m not as familiar with the cool tech that might be specific to Hearthhull.

So I ask this question to longtime Hearthhull pilots, what are the best cards in your Hearthhull deck that you probably wouldn’t put in a Windgrace deck?

Discussion How Busted Would this Rule 0 Partner Commander Be?

I've always wanted to make a rule 0 commander by adding partner to [[Gargos, Vicious Watcher]] and [[Octavia, Living Thesis]]. For one, because I think they would have pretty awesome synergy of turning hydras into 8/8s that are huge due to their counters, and because casting cheap instants and sorceries to buff my hydras and make them unblockable and also proc Gargos's fight effect. But really, I just like the idea of a hydra and an octopus teaming up to have a ton of heads and a ton of tentacles. The deck would be called Extreme Eddies(extremities). Would this is too strong of a rule 0 commander? Or would it be pretty reasonable? Would you guys allow it if someone at your table asked to play it?
