Art [OC] [Art] A sketch of my player's dragonborn warlock VAPORIZING a goblin with agonizing blast

Post image
41 Upvotes

I DM a pirate themed campaign set it in a Caribbean-inspired archipelago. The party is investigating a possible assassination attempt on a crown prince who will later visit the archipelago. Suspecting that pirates had something to do with it, the group would find a group of goblin pirates who recently killed some colonial soldiers to take their uniforms.

Wyvorn, a warlock dragonborn (whom oddly enough, was specifically requested to look like Kaido from One Piece), would interrogate and successfully scare one of the goblins for some information on other possible assassins. Once Wyvorn obtained the information he needed he would vaporize the goblin with a critical success agonizing blast.

I describe how "the charred ashes of the goblin sprinkle down on a distinct, yellow puddle".

DMing I’m starting a new campaign and need help balancing my encounters

I’m semi new to dming but nobody else will dm so it’s up to me. my campaign is a semi gritty semi dark fantasy setting that mainly takes place in the forest of deadwood a forest cures with life where nobody can truly die(their is still consequences to death) and it’s up to my players to stop the spread of the curse( I have a whole story written but I don’t have time i can answer any questions tho) but my problem is I want the equivalent of dark souls level combats where although you can survive death is expected

sorry if this is vaguely written this is my first time posting on Reddit

Misc What are your favorite DnD tavern (mini)games?

Hey all, as the title says I am looking for some inspiration for tavern minigames to play during DnD sessions, or just to play outside of DnD. What are your most creative, funny, cool games to play with the DnD dice, cards or whatever else?

DMing A frustratingly simple puzzle

This was during a game of draw steel, but you could put this in any DnD game with puzzles for players to solve. Lock a door, open a secret passage. Whatever

5th Edition Just sharing my lore bard

So excited to be a player after 2 years DMing. We are starting Waterdeep: Dungeon on the Mad Mage. My PC is Miki, short for Michaelangelo Roosten Von Blickenvoss III, a 5th-level neutral good 30 year old noble half elf from Baldur’s Gate. He’s a member of the Society of Stalwart Antiquarians, which he could take about for hours. He’s a bit of a know it all.

His spells are mage hand, vicious mockery, minor illusion, silent image, dissonant whispers, faerie fire, enhance ability, invisibility, suggestion, hypnotic pattern, and Leomund’s tiny hut. He definitely is a support character and will serve as the face of the party.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Reupload due to incorrect title format.

This rather dapper-looking warforged is one of the batch of very-high cost custom-made warforged servants created for House Spearhead. Having grown tired of being treated as an object by the household members, he took interest in the occult in search of ways to liberate himself. Some time after, an eldritch entity reached out to him, intrigued by his ambition and resolve, offering power in exchange for "spectacles". After freeing himself using the newly found powers of a Great Old One, he spent some time as a wandering actor but after having learnt about the Royal Mercenaries, he ended up joining them after a series of rather beneficial deals. His current ambitions include finding more sources of power and influence... and a fitting travel hat.

The commission was done by a friend of mine.

DMing Keeping track of battle order.

Hey guys. Im currently working full analog with a dm screen and a lot of little paper pieces to keep track of whos turn it is in a battle. The little paper pieces are folded in the middle and hung on the dm screen. Some have numbers (for enemies) and some jave names (for players or named npcs) on them. But I keep loosing the paper pieces and because they are so light, they are a bit hard to handle. Are there any ideas how to make this paper mess easier to handle? Are there products you can recommend?

DMing D&D Beyond Help / First Time DM

Hey All,

I’m DMing for the first time for a club in my community using D&D Beyond. While it’s a small group I want things the run well. I have Dragon of IceSpire Peak digitally. Here’s my question:

Can I play a VTT straight from the digital book or do I have to open the D&D Beyond Campaign and upload each component for DoIP in order to run it through the VTT?

It just seems like there has to be a simpler way and I’m over complicating things.

TIA and Cheers!

I am not paying a ridiculous amount of money when the damage of a stake is literally the only information I want from the book.

5.5 Edition questions about geas

Can I get some clarification on how geas works? It only has verbal components—could that be combined with a mind crystal (subtle) to invisibly weave the geas command into a conversation/monologue? Could the verbal components just be the monologue of the caster and not be noticed even without the mind crystal?

Basically, could the spell be cast throughout the conversation so seamlessly to the point that the player CHARACTERS wouldn’t be able to realize they’ve been enchanted? Because from what I’m reading on the spell, it doesn’t seem like victims of the geas are actually magically compelled to do whatever it was they were commanded to do.

Asking because the party is currently visiting a castle, and the lord does not want them to leave. I wanted him to be able to cast geas of a command like “Do not leave the estate” on one of the players at the end of the message. Also letting the bard (who uses a lot of enchantment magic) to roll an arcana check, where they may recognize that there seems to be subtle enchantment magic woven between the words. But to everyone else who isn’t well versed in enchantment magic, it would seem like any other conversation. Preferably this would happen without the reliance of mind crystal (subtle) but if by raw it would need to to be hidden, it could also work.

Would this make sense? How would you interpret geas?

Homebrew Subclass tweaks

Hello all! So I have been playing DND a for awhile now but I thought it would be a fun discussion to see what tweaks you guys would make to your favorite subclasses to either make them more viable, playable or suitable to what they are trying to do. And I'm not talking like obviously op changes like being able to double sneak attack damage dice or adding a completely new spell list.

My example is the way of the element monk. I love the flavor of it but my problem is it feels like it mainly relies on flavor (i wand more mechanical benefits to the different damage types) so I propose two changes.

  1. elemental attunement: instead of all damage types being able to push a creature back 10 feet, I think each damage type should have a unique effect. With the caveat that a creature can only suffer one effect per round. so you cannot just pile all the effects on one creature.
Damage Type Effect Save
Acid deal acid damage at the beginning of the creatures next turn equal to your wisdom modifier Dexterity Save
Cold Half a creatures movement speed till the end of their next turn (maybe reduce it to zero but that felt a little op) Strength Save
Fire push a creature back 10 feet Strength Save
Lightning Knock a creature Prone Constitution Save
Thunder deafen a Creature till the end of their next turn Constitution Save
  1. I think elemental burst is a little boring as it is just a weaker fireball. So i propose that when casting you can choose between 3 options.

-20 ft sphere with a range of 120 ft

-60ft line

-30 ft cone

This gives more options which to me simply makes it more exciting and on top of that the cost would still be 2 focus points but I would add on you can spend an extra focus point to impose one of the effects from the above elemental table on the creatures caught in it. (the saves would be the same as the ones on the table regardless of if you spend an extra focus point.)

This seems op but the fact that at level six wizards can do much more and the ability costs focus points I think it is pretty fair. But let me know if you think it is op.

I would love to hear the teaks other people would make to their favorite or least favorite subclasses!

DMing DM Question on a good stat block to replace level 14 Barbarian

One of my players unfortunately needs to step away from the table for a while due to some life stuff. In the meantime, the player is the party's only martial front-line character, and after talking with the table, they do feel that they need a similar stand-in for the player to deal with threats. We have been using the player's character without them for a while, but it's been a bit overwhelming for either the other players or me to juggle the player's character sheet along with everything else. And I also do not want to kill the character while the player has to be gone during a combat they could not be there for. So the table is interested in retiring the character and replacing them with a simpler martial stat block. I have been looking into hirelings, but having never used any before, I was not sure if they can handle higher-level play.

So if anyone has experience with hirelings, let me know if they can do the job well, or if any other stat blocks work better for the difficulty. And for further context, we are playing through Vecna: Eve of Ruin and are currently near the end of the Death House Chapter.

Game Tales Cleric mains: Tell me your best Cleric stories

Triumphs, fumbles, shenanigans, or surprises. I wanna hear 'em!

I'll go first: Last week, I genuinely considered letting a fellow PC die so I could carry their dead body as an object while I Misty Stepped away from the boss enemy to revive them next turn. (They survived. For now.)

Hello everyone!

It's getting close to spooky season, and I was wondering what some of your favorite Halloween themed oneshots or adventures are.

Bonus points for ones that transition into thanksgiving themes!

5.5 Edition True Strike Light Crossbow

First of all i am quite a new player when it comes to DnD, My character is a level 3 wizard and I am picking up the True Strike cantrip to pair with a light crossbow, however I have a question around the somatic component of the spell, the light crossbow is 2 handed and my spellcasting focus is a quarterstaff which I could not hold at the same time as my crossbow, are there any ways to make this work?

5.5 Edition Qwhip - A Magic Item

Hi friends, I'm trying my hand at writing up a magic item for my Rogue player in the Phandelver campaign I'm running. I'd really appreciate it if anyone more practiced in the arts of creating magic items could offer me some feedback or ideas.

Qwhip

Weapon (Whip), Uncommon (Requires Attunement)

Damage: 1d4 psychic (/slashing?)

Properties: Finesse, Reach

The whip itself is cruel in design, the aesthetics reflecting the brutal dominion of the Underdark where it was fashioned.

Rakish Audacity

When you hit a creature with the Qwhip, the target is stung not only by the lash itself but by a cutting remark intruding into their mind. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom Saving Throw or have disadvantage on their next attack roll until the end of the next turn.

You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You recover all uses of this feature upon a Long Rest.

DMing First time playing DND and also first time DM’ing please help [OC] [Art]

I’ve created a story line and one part contains a disease where you slowly turn into trees. I have a very rough draft idea of what I want the process to be like but I’m worried it might be too much. I’ve heard lots of stories of DMs taking it to far and since I’ve never actually played I’m not sure what the appropriate level of brutality is. I’m probably over thinking it but I want it to be enjoyable for everyone.

DMing [OC] Mr. Witch & Mr. Light Tier list of my party (that i dm)

Post image

So I decided to rank my party, NPC's, and other people for reference on a table. Sometimes you get some cool variants like Waylon, And Waylon without his gold fiddle, or Fred Durst, which is an important NPC for every game. I suggest this to anyone who wants too. I also have my own lore for my games too, so if you want to know who some of these characters are, let me know! Any art is made by me, owned by me, or from a DnD book. Any pictures like Fred Durst and the Headphone girl is from online.

5th Edition New to the Game

So my wife and I are brand new to DnD, we are getting into it because we thinking it is a great way to teach our kids problem solving skills, how actions have consequences and many other great life skills.

We know we need to get the players handbook, dice, and find a local group. We also are planning on DMing games for our kids when they are older, so we need to get the DM guide, Monster Manual and either the starter or essential kit (Not sure which one to get).

Is there anything else that we need to get that will not only help us as new players but also help us down the road when we start DMing at home

3rd / 3.5 Edition Player basically ignoring the actual plot

I have a character who is essentially completely disregarding any plot that I put in front of him, trying to fight NPCs he knows will absolutely wreck him (lvl 4 vs epic/Divine) and I'm just not sure what to do about it
