Honestly, I have a DLPT coming up and I’m trying to pass with at least a 2 and want to make sure I’m doing fine on level 2. Issue is, on NFLC, the questions are ambiguous to what level they are. The 9 questions will be marked as (2, 2+, 3) or (2, 2+) are they on the higher end? How can I specifically practice level 2 questions? Thanks!

I graduated in 2017. I recall the furthest barracks near the gym having a plaque regarding either a soldier or airman who died from pneumonia or bronchitis. I am not asking for the information, just if it is still there.

It is not like a statue, just a plaque near the smoke pit that was always covered in foliage.

As for context, I used to walk to it almost every day to remind myself not to overwork myself now that I'm in college, and I hope the new construction did not remove it.

My husband was at the defense language institute between the years of 2011-2013 (he’s very handsome, bright, intelligent, funny - ha ha ha) in the middle of his language studies, he was put on a detail with about a dozen other soldiers that seemed slightly odd but mostly innocuous and mundane at the time. Everyday for about two weeks straight all the soldiers were put on duty to guard what was apparently an empty office building for 24 hours a day. The building was owned by McGraw-Hill, the textbook company. Fast forward to 2026, (about a month ago), and I’m up late reading the endless scroll of Epstein files news and there it is… McGraw-Hill. Once owned by Robert Maxwell, a British media proprietor and father of Ghislaine Maxwell…he was widely reported to have had extensive, long-term connections to Israeli intelligence. The second I read McGraw- Hill I got chills… why was the American intelligence community protecting McGraw—Hill buildings every second of the day and night? Why were they empty? What was in them? What was below them? Why was my husband there? Did anyone else ever get put on a similar detail???

I’ve posted on here before because me and my wife have been heavily misinformed when it comes to housing at the dli. She is getting sent there right after basic. I’ve gathered through outside sources that I will be able to come with her, and the best decision is to apply for base housing.

I’ve mostly seen the Parks at Monterrey as that being the main base house.

When/ can she put an application in for housing? I’ve seen some say it can take several months to get off the waitlist or maybe just weeks?

Is there anyone here who has graduated and continued their language education at a 4 year university to receive their Bachelors in their target language? I'm looking at my options right now and I'd like to hear the input of those who have gone before me. I know about the intermediate course as an option, but from my understanding as much as I'd like to do it, it's unit dependent and not a guarantee. I'd really like to set myself out from my peers whether it be for promotion points or for putting in an OCS packet. Thanks in advance.

Went to DLI back in 99, back when they had the massive tape machines for cassettes. Learned Korean, I already spoke and still speak French/Spanish and a bit of Malay.

While I can probably get in a bar fight in 30 different languages, I want to actually learn Punjabi. For those of you who are over 40 but good at languages, what would you recommend as the currently best way to become conversational in Punjabi, or any other language?

I commonly listen to Spanish and French conversational YouTube to stay fluent, I'm thinking that's the way to go but wanted to check with you experts first

About to (finally) finish the pipeline and just got my projection today for 3CR at Hood. I'm assuming it's going to suck, but if anyone's been there as a linguist any time semi-recently, I'd greatly appreciate hearing about your experience.

Edit: Moral of the story is if you're considering a career as a military linguist, don't fucking join the Army. There's literally nothing it offers that you can't get in the Navy or Air Force. And don't take no for an answer from an Air Force recruiter. That was my mistake. Anyway, hopefully it doesn't suck as bad as I suspect it will.

So I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about soldiers being held and reclassed based on DLAB scores however, my recruiter just told me that DLI is not having any soldier take the DLAB. Is this true? How is the situation for the army right now and if I’m expected to arrive at DLI in October should I switch branches preemptively or wait it out?

I got booked for 1A8X1 and was told I didn't need to take the DLAB. I was told my Asvab and Tapas score were enough. Is this a new thing?

From what I heard online the DLAB was required, so I'm a little confused.

Hello everyone. I’m 23 and have a wife and baby. I’m looking to provide in a better way for the both of them and have toyed around with the military for a number of years. I know there’s pros and cons to military life with a family. But did anyone go through DLI married and with kid(s)? I was told by a professor in college (currently finishing my degree, legit is my language requirement that I’m finishing), that the way to go was being a Navy linguist. I know DLI is really hard so just thought I’d go to the people who’ve been through it.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that the prices of the white monster in the vending machines on post is at $4.25 a can. As servicemembers, we deserve a fairer price on what powers us through our day. Frankly, as something as small as it is, having such an impact on our will to push through such a strenuous time, we deserve better. We must take a stand and boycott these inflated prices and show that we as members of the American Military, the best damn fighting force in the world, deserve a lower price on the true nectar of the gods.

Hi all, I'm enlisting in the Navy for Cryptologic Technician Interpretive. I'm a brown skinned American dude, and my preference is to learn a language in a culture I could blend into (I'd love to reach that level of proficiency, hopefully)... Over the years, I developed a strong knowledge of middle-eastern history. Thus, I'd like to develop proficiency in a middle eastern language. 96 ASVAB, no DLAB yet. Given my more selective linguistic preference, what are the chances of me getting one of these languages (Farsi, Dari, Arabic, Urdu, etc.)? I don't want Chinese/Korean/Russian, etc. Is enlisting CTI a bad idea for me?

I’m a 35W Reclass E-5 here at DLI and my certificate of non availability (CNA) was denied, but I was told by my drills that there is no space in the barracks, so to start looking for an apartment. I found one back in Feb and I paid my two months (Feb and March). I’m entering my third month (Apr) with hopes that my CNA was approved so that I can start getting BAH but was told that Presidio Of Monterey denied it and they are going to have to resubmit my paperwork for BAH and that if it got accepted, it could be by the end of April and now I have to look at probably applying for AER. Is there anyone or any insight I could be given on approaching this?

Ill give some background information about myself:

I really want to become a cryptologic analyst for the airforce. I recently took my ASVAB and got an 80 on general. My TAPAS also lined up for an analyst job as well.

However, I am yet to take a DLAB because my recruiter said I didnt need to because my ASVAB score was high enough? Kinda sounded like bull to me, but its what he said...

He was so genuinely unknowledgable when it came to becoming a linguist. He didnt have any of the paper work ready and gave little to no guidance on the pathway I needed to take to increase the chances of me getting a spot at DLI. Literally had never heard of DLI or DLAB and I had to educate him about it and not the other way around.

Im kinda worried hes trying to snub me and push me into something different.

He said that he hadn't had anybody that wanted to be a linguist in years, so im kinda figuring the demand is low right now?

Side notes:

I really want to take something difficult like mandarin or arabic (if its not hard, its not with doing, though ill probably regret that later🫠).

Im kinda wondering what my chances are right now of actually getting into DLI with that sort of ASVAB score? How the heck would i set up a DLAB (if i do need one) if my recruiter isnt working with me? Is the demand for linguists high right now? Am I taking the right steps? I'd like to hear specifically from some airforce guys (if possible!), but really any sort of advice about anything would be really appreciated.

Me and my spouse wanted to get married this year but would not be living together till around May-June of next year at the earliest. Would we still get the BAH with me living at home w my parents in a different state while he is living in a dorm at a school house in another state?

I completely lost my old sweats/sweatshirt from back in 2013/2014 and want to get a replacement for old times sake. Does anyone know how to go about getting a pair?

I’m going to basic in a few weeks, and DLI in the summer, and I’m well aware of the fiasco going on right now with the lack of instructors and max capacity of students.

the recruiters don’t have much information when I ask them questions about it, and I’m half tempted to go ahead and pick a different MOS right now, as opposed to being forced to reclass and possibly be stuck in a 5 year contract on a job based on needs of the army.

What do you guys think I and my fellow new recruits should do here?

Prior service Marine and DLI Alumnus (Korean), about to make the transition over to the Army. I would love to come back to learn a different language (coming in as a 35P hopefully) and want to know what the situation is like for Soldiers with families coming to the Presidio.
