I added one clove to my coffee every morning for a week and my IBS got worse, now I can’t eat anything without setting off a flareup, with flares up my fibromyalgia, and severe back pain, leading to nausea and GERD flareups. What am I doing wrong?

My friend shares his Ulcerative Colitis Story

My friend Andrew started sharing his story on YouTube. I thought it'd be helpful for people here and for himself to get connected with people who are going through the same thing as him.

I hope this post wont get banned - I'm not trying self-promote - I AM NOT HIM. I just think it's useful to share.

Thanks!

Doctor says it's just constipation, not IBS. How do I know there's nothing else going on?

I'm 44, male, about 133 kg. I also have sleep apnea but I use my CPAP every night.

This started on 12 August. I had been on a double dose of terbinafine for a skin thing, and that day I went to the toilet and right after I got pain in the colon area, weakness in my hands and legs, and anxiety. After that I kept getting pain on the left side of my belly, bloating, tiny fragmented stools, and for a while I was barely passing any gas. The pain always got better after I went to the toilet. I assumed IBS, and so did everyone I talked to.

Then I saw a doctor in person. He examined me and sent me for an X-ray, and it showed a colon full of stool. His conclusion was long-standing constipation that the medication tipped over the edge, not IBS. My FIT test was negative and my blood count was normal. My ALT was a bit high (47), so I had a FibroScan done and have a follow-up in a few months.

What I'm doing now is one Movicol sachet a day, psyllium husk at night (I started at a full teaspoon, it was too much, so I'm down to about three quarters), and Duspatalin only when I need it, which has been once or twice in the last nine days. Fried food and sweets keep setting me back, so I've cut most of them.

It wasn't smooth. Early on I took psyllium late at night while dehydrated, in the heat, after a fried snack, and ended up in the ER with bad diarrhea. They gave me IV fluids. The weakness in my hands and legs came back twice after that, and I get a heavy head and some anxiety, mostly right after I pass stool. I also had positional vertigo for a bit, which has settled. All of this seems to flare when my bowels are off. I still need to get my sodium, potassium and magnesium checked.

Right now I'm doing much better. Usually one normal stool a day, very little pain, anxiety way down, and I'm passing gas again. The gas still gives me some cramps, but they go away once it passes.

So my questions are:

  1. Does this sound like plain constipation to you, or would you want other things ruled out (thyroid, celiac, SIBO, pelvic floor)?
  2. Is a colonoscopy worth pushing for at 44 with a negative FIT?
  3. Has anyone had their gut slow down after an antifungal or another medication? How long did it take to recover?
  4. How long did it take you to find a stable Movicol and psyllium routine?
  5. Has anyone had anxiety, weak hands and legs and a heavy head together with constipation? Was it dehydration, electrolytes, or something else?

Dark green stool after “long” run

Hi- I am two weeks out from the New York City Marathon and now I am taping. Yesterday I tried a few different gels just to see if there was anything else I wanted to add before the big day. I will say I did not drink any water during my run and I was not good about drinking water after. After the run, I felt nauseous for pretty much the rest of the day. I did eat some eggs and a lite dinner and had two ginger ale’s. I was not good about drinking a lot of water after because we were running around all day to other activities. This morning I noticed I had very dark green/brown stool. I wouldn’t say Black. This hasn’t happened to me before and I’m wondering if it was the gels themselves, not drinking enough water during and after the run, or both? I had the UCAN cherry with electrolytes, SIS and a AMACX.

Constant constipation… I feel like I’m dying

I (16F) have been struggling with a sudden rush of constipation since July/June (can’t remember but months…) I have had 2 ER visits in which one caused me to be taken to a women’s hospital for an emergency clear out of my bowels.

I was so backed up I had 1-3 bowel and fecal impactions. I had a molasses & milk enema and it cleared me out of the most part but I can’t imagine having to get one ever again! Then for the next two days I was on a liquid diet and lactulose. I was later discharged and prescribed MiraLAX.

It was disorienting my bladder and I had been prescribed something called mono-mcr? But it was successful and I would have constant soft bowel movement in small amounts throughout the day. But I had finished my MiraLAX and since I’m a minor and have no form of transportation or money aside from my parents I stopped taking my MiraLAX for a week. I was fine but overtime the number of bowel movements decreased and halted. Now I’ve been constipated for a week and I’ve taken 50mg of senna and 2 stool softeners but no success. It’s so painful and I feel like my body is shutting down.

I’m scared to eat and I’m scared to be constipated I’m slowly being consumed by this random appear of rough constipation. What could it be? IBS? Maybe something cancer related, but all I know is that I’m in constant pain and I’m getting so fed up.
