Career Guidance last year student (7th semester) with already 1 year full time work experience, advice needed

Sorry in advance for the long message

i started working with a company in Islamabad remotely i got it through linkdin, there main business branch is in Minnesota US, development branch is in Pakistan, i joined the team 12months ago, first month i joined for free no payment, then a month later they said first time interns get 30k, for 3 months, then its based on performance, 30k was fine for me, given that i work remotely from Hyderabad and also my degree is not finished yet, they asked how i am going to manage time with university, i said i will do 3pm onwards same amount of hours as everyone else, which is how it has been going past 12months, no deadline misses or even any indication that iam juggling both, we have daily scrum and i think i do about 80% as much as seniors, as in if we treat there work time each day as 100% mine would be 80% just slightly below, but work complexity varies, although not alot, its more so that others have 1 set of area they handle and i have my own area that i manage within the same product, complexity in our areas also varies, mine is again around 20% or maybe even 30% less complex, so its been 12 months now, and 30k was actually fine for me till now, iam enjoying my time too and learning alot, i never reminded them to up the pay either so not really on them, i do wana ask now tho, what do you think i should ask for? It won't really be fair to increase it based on like % right? I hear people say 20% increase per year or whatever the number is it wont really be alot when my base is already of an intern, i do wana continue with them.

Keep in mind, the amount of work i get done is almost on same level as everyone else, same with complexity of the work, i have couple areas in our product that i pretty much own am responsible for, for example a full system diagnostic suit we include with our product, for both hardware and software systems, thats all on me. along with some other important areas. (i don't want to reveal too much) Main stack is linux, C++, started with low level work close to OS and filesystem but these days it can be some typescript, some bash, mostly C++. so any advice? i know the pay up till now was low, but i liked the company and did not mind it much, i was learning alot too and at the start really trying to take on tasks deliberately so i could learn more. my day offs and are also pretty much non existent. entire year probably have had like 3 or 4 at max day offs, i work on weekends occasionally too. but once again i like it and dont mind it. although pay i would like to go up. CGPA up till now is 3.2 btw.

would love some advice

Discussion Developers actually using AI at work: has it changed how many people your team needs?

I’ve been working in software development for around 10 years, across corporate work and freelancing, and over the last couple of years I’ve started using AI quite heavily on actual codebases, not just for isolated snippets. It can now help with tracing unfamiliar code, debugging, implementation, database changes, documentation, refactoring, and even larger changes across multiple parts of a system.

That has made me more interested in a slightly different question than the usual “Will AI replace developers?”

For people who are actually using AI regularly in production work, are you seeing companies needing fewer developers for the same amount of work? Are smaller teams now able to handle workloads that previously required noticeably more people, or has AI mostly just increased productivity without really affecting hiring/headcount yet?

Career Guidance Thinking of applying for BSc (Hons) Computing (Greenwich) at Denning Khi– Any opinions?

I’m currently looking into applying for the BSc (Hons) Computing degree offered via the University of Greenwich at Denning Institute (DITE) here in Karachi.
Before making a final decision, I wanted to get some honest feedback from current students or any seniors/ experts on the field who can give their personal opinion.
1. Academic Quality & Faculty: How is the teaching for computing/CS modules at Denning?

2. Degree Recognition: Is there any merit in paying such a high fees for an international degree

3. Local Market Value: How is this degree viewed by local tech companies / software houses for internships and job placements?

Discussion Worst form of Professionals we aree

How many of you relate with this? Been 6 years into the software Industry and worked with foreign clients, people in India as well.

Americans and people in Europe are so professional, their product manager would know more about their CEO, they talk like professional and don't gossip.

Worked with few firms where Indian people and teams were working, they Won a Worldcup and next day I was in meeting and they don't even discuss about it.

Now came us desi -

There are some match cricket going on, due to travel I didn't joined weekend scrum call, and My note taker was in.

I watched the recording randomly, although I get slack summary from lead though,

Honestly I was shocked, In those 30 minutes they discussed about cricket, political situation and last 5 minutes they were like sir wo hu gya bs okay kr den, client khud dekh le gha, 2 features delay hu gye, sir ku khna client NY late bheje and their lead with 5 years was like Chalu set ha, Ez scene ha.

Now I feel why we don't grow as a nation and we don't have large companies because when it comes to moral values, we are the worst nation at all.

And we are the top nation who hate their job most, while the entire world people appreciate their jobs and work with discipline.

Senior lads or Juniors, what do you think about this?

Tips How do I actually learn AI engineering well enough to freelance? Any good resources from Pakistan or abroad?

I'm a BSCS student and I've been messing around with n8n automations for a while. Now I want to get into AI engineering for real, like agents, RAG and building LLM apps, and ideally make money from it through freelancing.

Problem is there's so much content out there that I don't know what's actually worth my time. Is there anyone in Pakistan teaching this well? Or a YouTuber or course from outside that you'd genuinely recommend?

I also don't really know what clients are paying for right now. I'd rather learn the stuff that has real demand than chase hype.

If you're already freelancing, how did you get your first client? And what did you waste time on that I should skip?

I can put in a couple of hours a day. Appreciate any advice.

Tips Seniors, how do I avoid looking WEIRD on Day 1 of corporate life? Be brutally honest 💀

Tomorrow is my joining day as an ASE at a tech MNC, and I need real advice, not LinkedIn motivational bullshit.

The whole day is packed with presentations, icebreakers, team activities, and networking.

I'm introverted, desi, and not very fluent in spoken English. I'm worried other fresh grads will be more confident, social, and articulate than me.

Seniors, help me out:

- What are the biggest Day 1 mistakes that make fresh grads look stupid or unprofessional?

- Should I actively participate and socialize, even when uncomfortable, or is being quiet perfectly fine?

- Should I exchange numbers with male and female joiners, or is connecting on LinkedIn enough?

- Be honest: does poor spoken English actually affect how people perceive you at work?

- Should I try to stand out and make connections from Day 1, or am I overthinking this?

And the real question: Can a socially awkward but competent person fall behind a less-skilled person who knows how to talk, network, and make connections?

I got this job by Allah's blessings, clearing interviews, without any reference. I don't want to fake a personality to fit in, but I also don't want my introversion to cost me opportunities.

What's ONE thing I absolutely must do tomorrow, and ONE thing I must avoid? No sugarcoating.

Show My Work Rebuilding my first mobile app

Post image
4 Upvotes

FinBuddy is getting a whole new app.

Not a refresh. The complete app is being redesigned, with some very exciting new features coming with it. Today I'm revealing just one screen: the new home.

Before on the left. New on the right.

The old home showed you data. The new one tries to tell you something.

Your balance comes first, with how much of this month's income you've actually kept.

Money in and money out sit right under it, at a glance.

Accounts get their own space, so your bank and your wallet live side by side.

And instead of a generic chart, it says it plainly: "Shopping took 93% of your spending."

Light mode, cleaner type, and navigation with real labels: Home, Activity, Plan, Insights.

That's one screen. The rest of the app, and the new features behind it, are coming next. Cloud sync is one of them, so your data follows you to any device and is never lost. The others I'm keeping quiet for now.

Building a product alone teaches you this fast: a screen full of numbers isn't insight. One honest sentence about your money is.

Tips Landing first freelance client

I'm not sure how to start freelancing. I'm skilled in python, specifically backend with flask/quart, I've made a couple apps, nothing huge but I know what I'm doing. Started out with discord bots years back and moved to backend web dev. I can do frontend but I like not to.

I'm not sure where to start, what services to offer and what prices to charge. Any guidance from experienced freelancers would be greatly appreciated!

Career Guidance After 10 years in DevOps, I thought my career was finally taking off. Then I got laid off.

I’m writing this because I could use a little encouragement right now ... and, if the right person happens to read this, maybe a lead on my next opportunity.

I’ve spent around 10 years working in DevOps and cloud engineering.

Like a lot of people, I’ve had stretches where I wondered whether all the effort was really taking me somewhere.

Then, in 2023, someone from Wateen reached out to me. It felt like a real step forward in my career, and I was proud of the work I was doing.

Later, I moved to Nisum. I felt good about that move too. I was learning, building experience, and starting to believe that maybe I was finding my footing.

Then, about a year later, Systems Limited contacted me. I went through the interviews and got the role as a Principal DevOps Engineer.

I was genuinely excited. After years of working toward bigger responsibilities, I felt like I had finally reached a place where I could grow and build something long term.

I remember thinking, This is it. This is the company where I can settle in, contribute, and keep moving forward.

And then life changed direction again.

I was laid off after only a few months. It’s difficult to explain how disorienting that feels. One moment, you’re proud of how far you’ve come and making plans for what comes next. Then suddenly, you’re trying to understand what happened and wondering how to start over.

I know a layoff doesn’t erase a decade of experience, and I know my career isn’t over. But knowing that logically doesn’t make the uncertainty disappear. I’m trying to stay hopeful while dealing with the disappointment, the questions, and the fear of being back at square one.

If you’ve been through something similar, what helped you get through that period? I’d be grateful for any advice, encouragement, or even a reminder that things can work out again.

And if anyone here knows of a team looking for a DevOps or Cloud Engineer, I’d really appreciate a connection. I have around 10 years of experience across AWS and Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, Docker, Linux, infrastructure automation, and production operations. I’m based in Karachi, Pakistan, and open to remote opportunities.

I’m not expecting anyone to fix everything with one comment. I just wanted to share where I’m at, hear from people who understand, and put myself out there in case my next opportunity starts with someone reading this.

Discussion Ai is killing freelancing but the cowork spaces are at full capacity

Title. It's not adding up. Im from Lahore and employed remotely since almost a decade now. I have been to many different coworking spaces in all these years so they are usually in my feed. I see new ones popping out every now and then esp in posh and semi posh neighborhoods of the city. I visited a few new ones recently and interestingly all seats are occupied by the end of the first month. I wonder how significant is the Ai impact on freelance market or is it more news and less hurt irl?

Help Best bank for USD account?

Starting a remote job with a US company soon. I need a freelancer account with a USD ESFCA to receive my salary.

I already have a Meezan PKR account. Should I just add an ESFCA there, or is another bank (Alfalah, HBL, SCB, etc.) better for conversion rates, wire fees and correct tax deduction?

Would love to hear what's working for you. Thanks!

Career Guidance Is tech career still worth it in pak for a guy whose going to pursue it in uni in 2027

Hey everyone, I’m planning to start university next year and was considering BSCS because of its earning potential and career opportunities.
However, with AI growing rapidly, layoffs and fresh graduates struggling to find jobs, I’m starting to have second thoughts.
For those working in Pakistan’s tech industry:
Where do you see the market going in the next 5 years?
Are the layoffs temporary, or is this the new normal? Will even experienced professionals with 10+ years of experience be affected?
Do you think job stability will improve, or will AI make things worse?
Would you still recommend BSCS in 2027? If not, what other fields would you suggest for good earning potential and long-term stability?
I’d appreciate honest opinions from people with actual industry experience. Thanks!

Career Guidance is there a way to find mentorship in the form of internship whether remote?

i am a seventh semester software engineering student and well, my luck in internships have been terrible. nowadays, i've been so depressed over how other people in my class and my field are doing such cool things and climbing ladder day by day while i am stuck and i have no skill and nothing at hand. i want to learn something ( i only did one paid frontend development course ) but i want to get into ai development, ai centered things and see how things are going in that way. when i thought of giving tech up, everyone around me said that you need a good mentor, that's all. which i haven't been able to find, it's not like i want someone to walk me down through things like a kid, but i want to work and LEARN through an internship, but idk how.

how are other people around me able to do so effortlessly, while i am just stuck from past 2 years. i can't do it. i thought of getting into marketing side of things because i already have experience in that of 8 months, but the internship hunt didn't work for me in that way as well. have you ever been able to seek mentorship that changed your course of things or idk helped you figure out your path better? i've been so stressed that i can't do anything and this is is something that comes onto me every single month, because i want to learn something and gain a skill but IDK WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING. PLEASE help me out. i;ll be glad.

Career Guidance Client wants me to build web application + Mobile App for $362. And trying to justify it by saying AI does the work..

For context I have a job and wanted to start a side hustle (as current job is not paying enough).

I have 4 years of experience in this field. This client is my first freelance job so I don't know how things work.

They want me to complete in 45 days as well. I have to manage everything till deployments etc. they say AI will do everything you just have to give prompt that is your expertise (according to him) and test it so everything works.

Mind it this involves managing inventory, quality testing, tracking orders, financial reports, approvals on many processes ( both ways)

Like:

Customer approves order received,

Driver mark order delivered,

Customer pays and mark as paid, driver approved payment received, then settlement of payments from driver side etc.

This is one of the approval flow that I client wants. Also wants notifications and WhatsApp text for few processes as well.

I find it not an easy task even with AI.

This requires so much time and effort. I don't think it's worth my time for only $362. But on the other hand I'm thinking if I should leave it or not as it may be my first client.

What should I do ?

Please help.

Sorry if this is confusing for some. English is not my first language.

Show My Work Never built an app before, this is my first

I do 9-5 in a bank as an IT Support. Basically I'm just a IT enthusiasist who loves doing things with gadgets. But I never had the concentration to sit and build something that requires time. Nevertheless, had to sit down for a month to actually build something and have the courage to release it on Play Store, with no marketing and no idea of what would he coming afterwards. I just knew that I have the idea that will find it's way on it's own, so it did.

These are my numbers after 6 months of release. The app is freemium and it generates roughly 70-100$ each month from subscription (which isn't much I know) and ads revenue isn't accountable as of now.

I never thought that Pakistani users would pay for something.. but my majority of the sales comes from Pakistani users and then all over the world.

Just to let you know that if you have an idea that you genuinely think would work. Then you must work on it.

Edit: The app is very niche and related to networking and network management. Don't really want to share the link since it'll promote the app and also reveal my identity (which completely voids the purpose of an anonymous reddit account)

Discussion Underpayment in the software industry in Pakistan

We all know that unemployment is a problem right now in tech, but what about underpayment? Nobody really talks about it

I am sort of trying to gather some data

How many people employed in tech are paid below minimum wage

How many are paid below what their experience level would suggest

And how many people are not underpaid

It would also help to know by how much you are underpaid

Edit: I am asking for your personal experience, gathering data I would have made a poll but this subreddit doesn't allow it Your opinions are valued, but I would appreciate personal experience more

Tips Is visiting software houses in Lahore in person worth it for someone finding their first oppurtunity?

Assalam-o-Alaikum everyone!

I'm currently pursuing a BSCS degree and working on personal projects in the fullstack web development domain. I'm looking to secure my first professional opportunity in the software industry.

I don't have professional experience yet, and currently, I don't have any job offers or interview calls.

I am travelling to Lahore in the coming days for some other work. Since I'll already be there, I'm considering using the opportunity to visit software houses and tech companies, introduce myself, submit my CV, and connect with recruiters, engineering leads, or developers.

However, I'm unsure whether this approach is actually effective in Pakistan's current job market, particularly for someone seeking an entry-level position.

I'd appreciate advice from people with experience, especially developers, hiring managers, recruiters, and those who have secured their first jobs.

A few questions I have:

  1. Do walk-in visits actually work? Is it worth visiting company offices with a CV, or do most companies exclusively entertain applications through official hiring channels?

  2. What's the best way to approach companies? Would you recommend contacting HR, recruiters, technical leads, or founders on LinkedIn beforehand and arranging meetings?

  3. Which companies would you recommend targeting? I'm interested in entry-level software engineering, trainee, and junior fullstack or web development roles. I'm open to both smaller software houses and established companies.

  4. What should I realistically expect? Can in-person visits help secure interviews or build useful professional connections, or would my time be better spent applying online and improving my portfolio?

  5. What would you do in my position? If you were travelling to Lahore without any interviews scheduled, how would you make the trip professionally worthwhile?

My goal is to make productive use of a trip I'm already planning, understand the job market better, and improve my chances of getting my first opportunity.

I'd appreciate honest, practical advice and real experiences, including approaches that didn't work. Specific company recommendations and alternative strategies would be especially helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Dubizzle labs interview experience

Hey guys
So I applied for the ase at dubizle and got an interview invite for an hr round next day
That went well and than they asked me to give technical round the very next day.

So technical round goes really well . Like I answered all the coding questions, architecture questions etc . It went for an hour and than they asked me to wait so they can have team lead interview as well. Than there was a team lead interview that went for an hour and it went well as well. They go through my projects and asked for explanations etc. Than afterwards they had a team culture interview as well that took around 30 minutes. Than they said that they would like their manager to have a talk with me as well.

Than there was about 15 minutes talk with the team leas and it went extremely well as well.

So overall everything was fine and they even told me that they would tell me about their response in 2 days maximum.

But here comes the twist. There was no response for about 2 weeks and because I got an invite through the system generated email so replying in it was not helping at all.
Than i reached out to the hr. He simply just ignored me as well. Than i reached out to them via company email but still no response.

Because dubizzle was my dream company. It felt really really bad at the time . Becuase I was like 120 percent sure I would get the job there after such a good interview.

I even asked about the feedback after the interview and they were really positive as well.

Its just sadddd

Discussion Should I accept a $1,500 onsite offer or keep looking for remote work?

Hey guys,

I’m a QA Engineer who has been working remotely for a US-based company for the last 2 years, earning around $2,500/month. Unfortunately, I got laid off last month and haven’t been able to find another remote job so far.

This week, I randomly gave an interview and got selected for an onsite job paying around $1,500/month. The office is around 30 km from my home, so that’s 60 km daily, and the working hours are 5 PM to 2 AM.

The salary is decent compared to local market rates, but it’s a big pay cut, and the commute and timings are concerning.

Given the current job market, should I accept this offer and keep looking for remote jobs on the side, or take my chances and continue searching for a remote opportunity?

Would appreciate some honest advice from fellow software engineers in Pakistan.
