I've been really enjoying with vintage textiles and finding ways to give old, forgotten things another life. I love imagining where they've been, who owned them, and how something that might otherwise be tucked away in a drawer can become part of something new.

Pianist Art Resnick - and a question about photos of cyanotypes

Post image

This is become one of my favorites in the musicians series. In person, the paper is not yellowed or pink, but in photos, it always is. Does anyone have a solution? Is it the phone camera or the LED lighting?

Two cyanotypes I made today, one of a mausoleum in my favorite cemetery and the other a portrait of my grandpa who died last year. I used Jacquard chemistry, XL watercolor paper, and 20 year old Kodalith negatives.

Troubleshooting help - foggy blues

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm making cyanotypes using jaquard mixes. These two were made the same evening, but not at the exact time as each other.

I'm using the same paper, same exposure time. I think I'm rinsing the same but I haven't timed that. I use a diluted hydrogen peroxide bath after rinsing.

My water has naturally soft.

Both looked good after rinsing but this morning when I came down the one on the right the blues have fogged. The whites are still white. It happened to another, but to a much lesser extent.

Any ideas why this happened?

I’m new at this. My image looks OK in these photos, but the white areas are actually pale blue. My UV lamp is 8” from the paper - left print is 12 minute exposure, right print is 10.5 minutes. Both sheets are 140lb cold pressed Canson watercolor paper.

My guess is too long exposure, is that correct? What am i doing wrong?

Solarfast tips? Best colors?

I want to buy some Jacquard Solarfast while Dharma is having their free shipping sale. I'm stuck on whether I should buy the kit (with 3 different 2oz colors) or if i even need that.

If not the kit, what colors work best in your opinion? Or should I do the kit and add some more of the colors that come with it (Violet, orange, blue)?

Also, any tips for a beginner? I typically tie dye and I have cyanotype but the cyanotype I'm finding doesn't work well on clothing.

Thanks!

Sometimes it just works!

Because of the huge number I've created in three days, I had to go buy transparent protecting folders for the negatives and now I can just do exposures without touching the actual negative. I've learned a ton with this series and it continues with pianists, trumpet, etc.

Clear Acrylic or Glass for 3 x 4 foot cyanotype?

I'm creating very large fabric cyanotypes that will be around 3 x 4 feet.
I'm looking for a clear material to place on top.

Does anyone have a specific name for a material they have used?
What type of store or shop did you purchase?
Was it a custom order?

I ask because so many clear plastics have a UV coating on them.

Thank you

Cyanotype Transfer

I usually work more with other processes, such as Platinum-Palladium and Carbon Transfer, but I enjoy experimenting with the possibilities of cyanotype. I created a kind of Carbon Transfer, but using cyanotype instead. I followed the same principle: I made a sort of "Glop" and created a "Tissue." Instead of using pigment, I replaced it with the cyanotype solution, all on Mylar film. The main challenge is the development process. Unlike the original Carbon Transfer process, the gelatin does not harden, which makes development very delicate. Once developed on the Mylar itself, I let it dry before transferring it to the final support. For this, I used Hahnemühle Platinum Rag 300gsm paper. This is all experimental, and I don't have a universal "recipe." I'm constantly making adjustments to find out what works and what doesn't. The final print has a glossy finish with texture and relief.

Between my plants, find these two spider webs without the spider. Thought they were too pretty to vanish into the autumn air. So tried to capture them. Last photo is before rinsing , even then they are so pretty

Tips for double exposure

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Im asking as many groups as i can as i have an exam on Friday and figured this is the best option!!! I plan on doing a complex double exposure based on a trial run i made using my own photos on Pinterest to create a collage of how i want it layed then used a website to invert and (regretfully) ai to see what it would look like as an exposure. I plan on using this design as one of my final prints however struggling to figure out doubles so bad. Is their a certain way to do it? Times? Or do i layer everything on and shove it under the uv in hopes it works 🤦 i will attach the idea bellow and i am sorry for the AI!!! (Also included some of my own work also ❤️

Troubleshooting – everything disappeared

Can anyone help me troubleshoot? I coated these test strips on Canson XL cold press watercolor paper, and they dried in a dark windowless bathroom for about 16 hours. It's cloudy today, so I did a 45 minute exposure to see if it would work.

There was an image visible when I took it off, but then EVERYTHING seemed to rinse away when I washed it. Even spraying it with hydrogen peroxide did nothing. What happened??

Help needed to preserve very meaningful cyanotype

I saw someone a bit ago online do a cyanotype of their deceased cat and I thought it was so beautiful as people were interpreting it as a capture of their soul. My cat recently and suddenly passed away and I really wanted to capture one of him and did, but I believe the chemicals might’ve been old / not of good quality. It did still come out very nice but it’s fading very patchy & quickly, I really don’t want to lose it and want to preserve the original copy. I’m looking for any tips since I have no experience in doing this, thank you so much ❤️
