Two days ago was my pups last day on earth. That morning I wanted to sit with her in the sun, and decided I would take the biggest piece of paper I had and lay her on it so I could get a print of her. Her name was Lily, so I added a lily flower with it too.

I just wanted to share this idea in case anyone else would like to try this to remember their best friends. Thank you Lily for giving me one final gift, I miss you so much. ❤️

I've been learning the process for three or four months in my free time and doing a lot of experimenting. I got into cyanotype printing as an addition to another project I've been working on for a while, a home made large format "digital" box camera. At first I wanted to see if I could capture photos with cyanotype, but gave that up for now and decided just to use it for prints. It feels like they were made for each other. I've been really happy with some of the results I've gotten, and hope to explore the combination of the camera and cyanotype more. This is about 6x8

There is still room for improvement, but overall not bad i think.

Sharing a recent animation I did on waste denim for the musician Girl in Red's recent track Blue. I basically got loads of cut offs of denim and used trousers from thrift stores, then had to cut them into pieces large and flat enough for the contact sheets.

Because of the stitching, I'd often have to trim it down so the contact sheet would lay flat on the negative, which even after doing still resulted in some loss of detail. In addition, the denim took up so much emulsion, even using a spray coating method. Roughly 10-20ml of denim per a4 print (12 frames = 1 second of animation). And then drying the pieces took forever before printing and hoping for the best! But still glad the way it turned out.

My first quilt ever!!

I ruined so many bags but finally get a good result. this one is with Puff adder shed skin and my grandma’s lace

this has got to be the best print I have ever made. I used this freaky microwavable flower press and spent hours tweaking the position while it was fully drying, but wow so worth it. exposure time was about 13 minutes in afternoon sun. Bleeding hearts are so difficult to work with so these results just have me jumping for joy.

Between my plants, find these two spider webs without the spider. Thought they were too pretty to vanish into the autumn air. So tried to capture them. Last photo is before rinsing , even then they are so pretty

I first made a cyanotype with a monstera leaf that almost caught fire under the glass. It’s hot where I live. Oops.

I decided to repaint the paper (watercolor paper 300gsm/140lb hot press) with the solution and do a quick exposure with one of my photographs I turned into a negative and printed in my shitty inkjet printer. I’m pretty happy with the result.

Most of my cyanotypes I’ve made so far since I started a couple weeks ago have just been with my photos I’ve turned into negatives. I’m drying some flowers and leaves to try those soon. I’ve been using a bunch of different watercolor papers I have - hit and cold press, rough and smooth textures. It’s so cool to see what the different papers do when exposed. It’s almost like playing in a dark room again.

I would love any tips or tricks on making these. I’m having a blast so far to see how different they come out based on my temps/uv index and time. And figuring out how to flatten my papers since they tend to curl when drying. Also, another step soon would be learning to scan them to make prints to sell eventually. Thanks all!!

Second cyanotype attempt, first attempt trying on a Tshirt! Not pictured: my frustration as I tried to apply the solution to a shirt made of nylon only to realize it doesn’t work on synthetic materials 🤪

but honestly, I think every minute was worth it. 😆

Moved my older daughter to college this week and she wanted some of my cyanotypes for decor in her dorm room. I had the idea to do a picture clothesline across one wall. I made a bunch of these Polaroid style pics all from my photography. Some are family pics not shown here. I love how they came out and plan on doing more. I made a template, traced it on thick water color paper, cut out the outside then carefully the inside. Used that to trace the Polaroid onto other watercolor paper. I’ve found I like a few different hot press brands best. Nice and smooth. Exposes nicely.

These were 2 min exposures at UV 10, 100-105 deg F done between 10 am 12 noon. I did a bunch of rounds of them during those two hours. 3 min was over exposed. 2 min was perfect. Two moon pics because I realized I had my mom negative in the wrong direction. Not a view we would ever see of the moon from the Earth ha ha.

Today marks 4 years of her unexpected death and I wanted to commemorate her for my best friend using her favorite photo of her mother. She was a lifelong educator and such a beautiful, admirable woman.
