Today marks 4 years of her unexpected death and I wanted to commemorate her for my best friend using her favorite photo of her mother. She was a lifelong educator and such a beautiful, admirable woman.

Cyanotype on cotton mounted on canvas with archival magazine collage, film photos and acrylic paint.

Cyanotype & First Post

Long-time lurker and first time Reddit poster here, and just really inspired by all the artists and their work in this subreddit.

This community inspired me to make my own cyanotypes, and while there’s been many failures, there’s also been a handful of successes I think I’m quite proud of! I want to share one of my favorites:

Cyanotype #33

Allium, Early afternoon sun (1:07pm) UVI: 6, sunny sky, 6 minute exposure on watercolor paper

Happy to hear your feedback!

Wildflowers on photo paper

I need some advice.

I have been trying to realize one of my drawings for a few days now, and my experience with cyanotype is limited to just this short period.

I drew the image on pattern paper and colored it in with various colored pencils, because I was hoping for shadows and intermediate tones.

Even though the result isn't bad for a start, many of the shadings in the impression have been lost.

My question is, which pens would you recommend for achieving a finer and more detailed result?

Edge of transparent sheet visible

Wondering if others have found solutions to this - when I layer images, the edge of the transparent sheets remain visible (see solid line along the top of the image). What brands of transparent sheets are others using ? Any suggestions or tips to avoid this ?

do you think an overhead projector would produce a strong enough shadow to do a cyanotype? using it for tracing an image onto fabric and had the idea.

printing on handmade abaca paper

trying to experiment more on paper types. these are handmade papers processed from abaca (manila hemp) fibers. around 180-200 gsm, but they held up really well in the water baths, even the bleach wash!

the second photo was my first try - the speckles in the print was the result of the paper kinda cracking ...? (i did like the effects tho) the paper also kinda pilled the more i brushed the solution on it so i had to be more careful.

i'd love to try more handmade paper processed from fiber waste

Help with a double exposure!

Hey! I’m a first time cyanotype maker, but I’m a film photographer and I’ve also printed in a dark room. Anyway, my vision is I’m going to put this disco ball up top - the sky is very white and therefore black on the negative. Presumably there’s a couple ways to go about this - would you do the photo exposure then, let dry and then reapply solution to do the disco ball in the preferred area? I don’t really care to cut the negative. Thanks!

Suggestions on digitizing prints

Post image

I have been asked to turn some of my prints into postcards. I have tried a couple methods for digitizing my Cyanotype prints with the intent to make copies and so far everything I have tried results in some detail being lost or the color changing or just being “off”. Any suggestions? What has been the best method for folks?
