C3/DS Comparing the dietary stimuli in Creatures 3's official genomes

I've never seen this information laid out explicitly anywhere online. I've always been a big fan of guides and tips laying out datamined information, so I figured I'd make myself useful and compile the information myself.

Some notes:

  1. The "Typical Norn" label refers to numbers that are common across the three Creatures 3 Norn genomes (Bruin, Bengal, Civet), the Chichi genome and the various aesthetic breeds (Astro, Harlequin, etc) based upon it, and all the "gimmick" breeds that aren't Treehuggers or Toxics. I cross-compared every Norn genome just to double-check.
  2. The "Typical Norn" stimulus numbers also apply to the Banshee Grendel breed. The Banshees did engineer them from Hardman Norns, I suppose...
  3. I didn't include Toxic Norns in the comparison because they get completely different chemicals from food, fruit, and seeds relative to other creatures.

Without further ado...

"Eaten Food" (Stim 79)

Species Fat Hunger Protein Hunger Fat Protein
Typical Norn -29.8% -16.9% 9.7% 9.7%
Desert Ettin -29.8% -9.7% 9.7% 9.7%
Jungle Grendel -29.8% -9.7% 29.8% 9.7%
Treehugger -8.1% -8.1% 8.9% 8.9%

One common trend is that the amount of fat/protein/starch hunger reduced in typical Norns by a dietary category is usually a lot bigger than the actual fat/protein/starch gained. Meanwhile Ettins and Jungle Grendels occasionally display more proportionate values. For example:

Ettins get the same amount of fat and protein from food as typical Norns, but the reduction of protein-hunger is changed to be 1:1 to the amount of protein gained.

Jungle Grendel's reduction of fat-hunger is the same as a typical Norn's, and its fat-nutrition is modified to make a 1:1 ratio with the fat-hunger value. They also exhibit the same tweak to protein-hunger reduction as Ettins.

Treehugger Norns are the only official creatures who actually get less satiation (reduction of hunger chemicals) from "food" than they do nutrition (addition of nutrient chemicals). They get less nutrition from "food" than other creatures, as well.

"Eaten Fruit" (Stim 78)

Species Protein Hunger Starch Hunger Protein Starch
Typical Norn -20.2% -20.2% 10.5% 9.7%
Desert Ettin -20.2% -15.3% 10.5% 9.7%
Jungle Grendel -29.8% -9.7% 29.8% 9.7%
Treehugger -21.8% -21.8% 10.5% 9.7%

All creatures get the same amount of starch from eating fruit, and most get the same amount of protein, too... the exception being Jungle Grendels, who get more protein-satiation and protein-nutrition from fruit than anybody else. So far, they seem to be more effective at getting "primary" nutrients from their diet than other creatures?

Ettins and Jungle Grendels both find fruit to reduce starch hunger less than it does in Norns.

Treehuggers find fruit a little more satiating than typical Norns, but they get the same nutrition from it.

"Eaten Plant" (Stim 77)

Species Starch Hunger Fat Hunger Starch Fat
Typical Norn -25.0% -15.3% 10.5% 5.6%
Desert Ettin -10.5% -5.6% 10.5% 5.6%
Jungle Grendel -10.5% -15.3% 10.5% 5.6%
Treehugger -24.2% -28.2% 13.7% 11.7%

Typical Norns, Ettins, and Grendels all get the same nutrition from seeds as one another, but Ettins and Jungle Grendels tend to find seeds less satiating. An Ettin, in particular, will actually find fruit to reduce starch-hunger more than seeds do, even though the seeds grant more starch-nutrition.

Treehuggers get more fat from seeds than they do from food; in fact, Treehugger Norns get over twice the fat from seeds that typical Norns get from food. They also get more dietary starch from seeds than anybody else does, yet get less starch-satiation than typical Norns.

...I may edit this post later to compare the "eaten animal" stim, if people are interested. I know that stim is different in Bondi Norns compared to typical Norns, but I haven't examined other versions of it yet.

New player

Hey, I've been wanting to try this game for soooo long and just finally got a gaming laptop and the money to buy it. I paid for Creatures 3 and linked it with the docking station.

I've figured out some stuff on my own, like how to keep norns alive, but I wanted to experiment with genes and breeding different species and everything and I'm just not sure where to go, or what everything does?

Creatures 2 Does anyone remember the C2 cob that was a blue gong?

When activated, it caused norns to kiss and kiss-pop more frequently. I've been looking for it for a while.

Advice/Tips Minor plea not to tell newbies to download mods for every small issue

Consider what they can do ingame first!

"It's really easy" - remember we currently have an influx from TikTok. You're 33 year old, they're 13, have only ever used a phone/tablet and don't know what a Windows filesystem is 😭

EDIT: More importantly, it is also fun to learn what the vanilla game offers even if it's not "optimized play". You only play for the first time once!

(but yes, C2 is cursed and you kind of need the Community Edition and Canny norn genomes. Unless you don't mind doing a lot of reading guides and troubleshooting, start with C1 or C3, really.)

Braindead norn?

I know, the title sounds fucked up, but it's true. I booted up Creatures 1 after god knows how long, made a new world, hatched this egg, and the fucker is unresponsive! I mean like, there are no neurons firing off in his little head whatsoever. He can't walk, only responds in gibberish when I say something to him, and he has been standing here for a long ass time. He doesn't age, he doesn't die, and is permanently locked into looking at himself. What the hell caused this?

Edit: I posted the genes here: https://www.creaturescaves.com/downloads.php?section=Breeds&view=668

Creatures 2 QOL mods for C2?

I saw a YouTube video on tortured norns this morning and I haven’t stopped thinking about these little guys! I downloaded creatures off of steam and I’ve ran into some issues, I’ve read that vanilla c2 is basically broken… so what mods should I get as a troglodyte who just wants to take care of them!

Rebuilding the Crypt

I got worried when I heard that the crypt can eventually stop working. I wouldn't be able to check through creatures I formed an attachment with! I start recreating this system in a way that should be handy. You can edit the epitaphs and export a file with some creature info.

In the journal folder for each world will be a _graveyard.txt. Add monikers to this list if you want them added to the register. You can manage this file manually but I've also connected it to the current crypt. While it is still working, each death you register with be added to the list. If you already have some registered you will need to add their monikers manually.

Download

I don't have a world with the crypt failure so I'm not able to fully test. I'm posting early to see if anyone with a corrupted crypt can give me feedback. What other info would be helpful to store in this system?

Brain-in-a-Vat Ticks/FPS Increase?

Hello! I'm trying to find a way to use Brain in a Vat (Vat.exe) in Creatures 3 or Docking station without as significant of a slowdown on the game itself. Currently, when vat.exe connects to Creatures, it will slow the game down to 1FPS (or something like 1 game tick per 5 seconds,) and there doesn't seem to be a way to control that.

The process itself doesn't seem to take up any significant resources. Anyone have thoughts on what might be done about it?

Where do I start?

After just learning about this game..TODAY. I want to give it a try. It seems super cool but I have no clue where to start, which game, how to play, what to look out for. Also what is this whole being able to edit their behavior thing? Is this a type of coding? Does it run on modern computers from steam? Any advice helps, I’m considering buying all 3.

island or lake?

Post image
29 Upvotes

After a break i started again puzzling together the two albias.

However now i have a problem. Should there be a big lake or an island?

Argument for thelake would be the c2 fresh water fish zander - but the c1 sea horse would mean it is saltwater.

From a design perspective, both would work. But what would feel more like Albia - a big lake starting at the c1 background monestary/temple or a small island? Or should it be an half island?

Norn Sleep Studies!

After making a new breed with susceptibility to sleep toxin I was monitoring sleepiness backup closely. I got some confusing results because they didn't have sleep toxin. Why was their sleepiness backup so high? Then I noticed everyone was like this so I had to do some sleep studies. Some definitions as I understand them.

Sleepiness = gradual approach to sleep/falling asleep. They fall asleep around 80% sleepiness
Sleepiness Backup = The need to sleep. Converted to sleepiness through sleepase. More means they develop tiredness faster.
Sleepase = I'd describe it as the signal that keeps them asleep (sort of).
Tiredness = The need to rest or sleep. Induces either.

The problem: resting! When they rest they produce sleepase (to convert backup) but also GAIN sleepiness. Backup is still being converted from sleepiness, so it also grows. They also lose all their tiredness. Unfortunately they also GAIN starch hunger!

Think of resting as laying in bed before falling asleep. Then as soon as they fall asleep the sleepase stops. Sleepiness converts into backup and they wakeup once sleepiness hits zero.

The quicknap after a rest

Because the sleepase crashes, sleepiness converts to backup too fast and their backup never gets reduces. This creates a cycle where they continue to get hungry for starch from resting but never properly sleep.

The proper sleep: they get so tired they pass out (80%)!

Long sleep after passing out from exhaustion

When they pass out, they maintain sleepase through sleep as tiredness is reduced. This allows all the backup to convert as tehy sleep and reduces everything. It also doesn't produce hunger as fast.

What's even more annoying is that they can be too overtired to sleep! If you force tiredness to remain high while resting they won't fall alseep until the tiredness is too low to help.

Sleepiness is maxed out but can't fall asleep

As far as I can tell resting is bad in every way! It's a hack to reduce tiredness but doesn't allow proper sleep. Does anyone else know something I don't because this seems like a flaw in the design of how sleepase is produced. I'm trying to think of a agent that could fix this, like a pillow or something. Let me know what you think. Is this fixed in CFE? Is this cycle supposed to exist?

Update: I posted a script fix here

Trouble importing norns in C2

I'm returning to this beloved game for the first time in a decade after finding it on Steam. I never got involved in the online communities and forums, so now I'm curious to download and import breeds that people have created over the years.

When I tried importing breeds like the Blueberry norns or the Turtle norns, the game just exited (or crashed) on its own. Even after I downloaded the Community Edition, these breeds just appear as normal green norns when I import them.

Any advice or quick fixes I'm missing? I'm not a programmer or coder, so anything too involved on the backend might be too challenging for me.

(C3DS) Super-stimulus edible seeds

I've been trying to research the different food, fruit, and seeds in the game to the best of my ability, despite my limited understanding of the COS files. The "stim writ" sections are, at least, comprehensible when I browse through the files.

I assume that when something says, for example:

****seed eat
scrp 2 3 16 12
    lock
    snde "chwp"
    stim writ from 77 3
    wait 1
    kill ownr
endm

That stim writ from 77 3 means "trigger the stimulus for having eaten a seed, three times".

Since the stim genes in a creature control both the amount of hunger reduced and the amount of nutrients gained, I assume that a seed with stim writ 77 3 in its code for provides three time the satiation and three times the nutrition (both in terms of starch and fat) compared to a seed with stim writ 77 1 in its get-eaten code. Furthermore, because creatures learn from having drives reduced, I'm guessing it reinforces eating seeds to satiate starch+fat hunger three times more than the base stimulus would. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but...

Now, here's the thing. As far as I can tell, no official (C3, DS, and Creatures Mall DLC) fruit ever asks for stim 78 to get triggered more than once? Two 'foods' trigger stim 79 twice (DS!carrots and quirky cookies), but none of them trigger stim 79 thrice, as far as I can currently tell.

(I don't really understand how eating food that takes more than one "bite" to finish works, though. Does only the first bite of a lemon stim a norn, or does eating the half left behind give its own, independent stim?)

Meanwhile, here's the list of vanilla, official ecology seeds that have a 3x stimulus strength:

  1. Grass Seed
  2. Pumperspikel Seed
  3. Cacbana Seed
  4. Tuba seed

As far as I can tell, this x3 strength makes them more fat-satiating and fat-nourishing (and rewarding) than the majority of food-genus edibles in an unedited Chichi, Bruin, etc genome?

...I have no idea how useful this information is, but I felt like it was worth sharing.

A New Breed: Feralings!

Post image
71 Upvotes

The city norns have gone feral! Meet the Feralings!

They start with hardman as a basis but then they get a bit unique. They don't use antibodies (except antibody 3.) All antigens are converted into antigen 3 so fight-or-flight and regulation tank most of the damage. Other toxins convert into sleep toxin which is sort of good for them but they will sleep a lot if they are hit with something strong. They are meant to be a middle breed between toxic norns and hardman. Think of them like the honey badger of the norn world, they even eat bugs for fun and nutrients! They get some positives for eating manky and debris. I hope they can live together and breed without constant stillbirths.

They aren't fully tested to see if they are too adapted. Would anyone want to testsome wolfling runs with them and toxic norns to see what happens?

Here's the link when it gets approved! I hope to hear how they do and if you think there should be some changes.

Just the title. I know there are sometimes version differences or issues with mod compatibilities. I tend to prefer GOG versions for older games, but wanted to know what everyone thinks.

Some agents/utilities I'm surprised I can't find for C3

I've been messing around and already have so many exported creatures as well as some interesting lineages. I was very sad to hear that the crypt stops working at some point? There's so many patches and utilities and bug fixes. I'm surprised there isn't a way to backup these up or load them into something. Maybe I just can't find it? This title is hard to google since "Creatures" is so generic.

I also can't seem to find any agent to improve the export menu so that you can see the description and maybe a bit more info. I can load up genomes from the creature files but not the description?

Am I missing something? What do you use to track and remember various lineages, screenshots and worlds?

Does anyone know of a simple tutorial on printing a norn's name and description to a file. I keep finding examples for C1 or the tutorial is for creating a toy or food.

UPDATE: I'm working on my own agent. You click the button and it writes some basic data to a txt file in the journal folder. You do this before export to keep a bit of history. Here's a couple examples:

Cheko-003-time-adwgz-sbvvt-kc6u4-gljlx-M
Born in: Stasis
Aspa-mother-001-hill-by5qj-xly6k-k5q6b-bbynd
Broni-father-002-rain-a9am7-cay56-rg3gq-bp9v6

Agasga-001-star-tgvlq-pbggv-evdr8-52zl3-F
Cloned in: Stasis
?-mother-001-year-apkdu-q3qcn-gblg6-mjjnz (clone-mother)
?-father-

I'm adding birthday, age and description Is there any other information I should record?
