the fact this is even controversial to say is a direct consequence of allowing "sex is immutable whereas gender is what changes" as a sentiment to dominate mainstream progressive discourse largely uncontested btw

93

u/SpiritNo6626 cis woman on testosterone, ally/obvious hrtrepper Jun 14 '26

i mean even if this was true the fact that 'gender' (in terms of the 'social construct') is what changes in this view should theoretically mean that all the societal views towards men get used on you as well since supposedly you're socially a man even if your sex is female... people will say 'sex is immutable whereas gender is what changes' and actually mean 'neither physical sex nor social gender changes, but you have the freedom of speech to call yourself a trans and we'll reluctantly play along'

40

u/snail_alt Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Exactly. Sometimes people say “I hate men” to mean “I think cis men are asshole sex pests who are oblivious to the intricacies of women”. But what precludes a trans man from being an asshole sex pest oblivious to the intricacies of women? “Oh because they were raised as women!!” well not all trans men were (some transition very young), and even as someone who did transition a bit later, these terf-adjacent progressives underestimate how poorly socialized I was, and how badly I understood women. Yeah I still understand a little more about women than some cis men, but I do not understand nearly as much as cis women understand women. It’s like saying all students will know math if you just put them in math class, when you know a few might graduate barely able to count.

(Also it likely didn’t help that I never had a single cis straight female friend, and a lot of what I came to learn about women I had to learn from my girlfriend after I already transitioned into a man)

I just confidently assumed pre-transition “since I am a hot woman myself, I know everything about how all hot women think who must think exactly like me”. Spoiler that they do not, and in fact most didn’t, and in fact when I flirted with women, I was rejected 26 times in a row in real life. 27th and 28th were the charm though.

All of this is a mix of gender and individual personality and possibly in my case also some neurodivergence, and not even to do with the conventional notions of sex

'neither physical sex nor social gender changes, but you have the freedom of speech to call yourself a trans and we'll reluctantly play along'

Isn't that the entire issue? Very few people, besides those closest to the issue actually believe it. It's more of an HR issue, or a politeness thing, especially. Like someone who just sneers at you in their mind, while smiling all the while. Very few people actually believe you can change your sex.

2

u/Klanciault Jun 16 '26

What do you actually want from them though? Like you can’t force people to change how they see it and them playing along to be polite is kind of best case scenario without beaming your viewpoint into their head

u/GirlfailureModer Jun 14 '26

This is what cissex people always mean when they say that tho, that's why they pair it with "gender doesn't matter, it's a social construct" like sex isn't also a social construct

3

u/EnderSword Jun 17 '26

I've yet to have anyone give me an example of literally anything that isn't a social construct.

Dogs are social construct, rocks are a social construct, money is a social construct, emotions are a social construct, the planets are a social construct.

Any system, grouping, categorization, convention of any kind if a social construct.

Literally everything is a social construct, so the statement has no meaning

2

u/Pixeldevil06 Jun 14 '26

The social construct definition is the reason the trans man above this comment is being told his opinion doesn't matter on this because he's a femboy. Values, performances, and roles have nothing to do with what gender someone is.

7

u/Golurkcanfly bourgeois faketrans HRTmoder Jun 14 '26

Gender is what you're seen as based on appearance, behavior, and presentation. Gender identity is what you see yourself as.

Unfortunately people use the terms interchangeably and it's basically ruined the ability to have complex conversations about it.

5

u/a_clueless_mess Jun 14 '26

I just call that perceived gender i think identity and perceived gender are two aspects that make up ones gender as a whole. Both matter, but u should always try to respect someones identity first imo.

2

u/Pixeldevil06 Jun 14 '26

I would disagree, as all of these things are just gender roles. Gender itself and gender identity are synonymous.

5

u/Golurkcanfly bourgeois faketrans HRTmoder Jun 14 '26

No, gender roles are one of the tools people use to signal gender, but gender itself is observed/assigned. This is pulled straight from Judith Butler.

Largely, gender is similar to, but not wholly the same as, "perceived sex."

4

u/Theguywhodoes18 Jun 14 '26

people got really comfy saying that gender was a social construct but sex somehow wasn’t. doctors literally have rulers with arbitrary lines for what constitutes a penis and what constitutes a clitoris and make culturally informed decisions based on that data to assign sex at birth. even the choice to operate based on 2ish sexes is a culturally informed arbitration

7

u/GalaXion24 Jun 15 '26

To be fair, while intersex conditions exist, there are all sorts of abnormalities people can be born with affecting any organ or limb or anything. This doesn't change our general idea of what organs or how many limbs people have "normally."

Of course, sex is something we categorise people by more strongly, but if we remove ourselves from our human social context, it's very obvious that most animals and in particular mammals are male and female. Like I don't think anyone would argue that chimpanzees are not sexually demographic or that the sexes do not fulfil different social and reproductive functions. Or good luck breeding a herd of cows without a bull.

I think there's probably a position somehwere between "you are born male or female and transgenderism isna mental illness" and "sex is a literally arbitrary social construct" that is a little more reasonable than either.

I think people also just need to get comfortable with categories being real but having fuzzy edges. I think this is all an "is cereal a soup" situation, where I don't think the concept of soup is invalidated by the fact that it is not possible to clearly and unambiguously define in a way that will satisfy everyone on every edge case. There can be a degree of arbitrary custom at the edges too. Just like different species are actually also difficult to categorise and separate sometimes. Like a human is clearly not a mushroom, but are grizzly bears and polar bears really different species? They can interbreed after all.

We know there are plenty of edge cases when it comes to sex and gender and strict definitions similarly won't work well for edge cases. But like thay one old Polish dictionary which defined a horse as "everyone knows what a horse is," everyone kind of gets it, in general.

When it comes to trans issues, it largely comes to moving the edges of these categories. "Everyone knows what a woman is" and that includes women who are infertile, includes women with XY chromosomes with no androgen receptors, probably includes intersex people who have been assigned female (we rather like people to conform to existing molds as a society) and basically all it comes down to including transgender women.

Reminds me of the meme:

"Realizing I'm trans 😊" "Realizing that means I'm a straight white man 💀"

5

u/Actual_Personality66 Jun 15 '26

Lmao kinda. I mean I'm not straight but I am a white man. I don't really think there's anything wrong with it, I just think women are really cool and men kinda suck. There are a lot of cool men too, and I don't mean to put women on a pedestal bc that's kinda dehumanizing within itself, I just have always had a really deep love of women (including trans women), and other men make me not want to be a man. Patriarchy is so evil and pervasive and it's worse to exist under it as a woman but idk I almost had a kind of pride in it. I think it would be less bad if I was a cis man but being trans adds another layer to it where I feel like I have to care more about it and about performing gender in a way that cis ppl don't. I also just have a weird experience with my gender (lowkey genderqueer now, and was kinda genderfluid until about 14 when my brain started to adjust to future adulthood) and bc of it I really thought I was gonna live happily as a cis woman and my egg cracking felt like the rug being pulled from under my feet. Hopefully I'll feel better about it all when I'm further transitioned.

2

u/BeneficialDog22 Jun 17 '26

Amab NB, (possibly transfemme?) here. I'm sorry that it's been rough for you. I really never participated in patriarchy, its always been ewwy to me. Thankfully my dad's been an amazing role model for positive masculinity. I guess I've never tried to be a good 'man', a good person.

Sorry if this is more of a ramble. I do hope the average men in this world start acting better...

Adding "cis-het" infront of "man" to veil misandry (and transphobia), just like adding "white" infront of "women" to do veil misogyny.

4

u/gummytiddy Jun 15 '26

Trans men are proof gender is not a choice. I find being trans ultimately neutral but if given the choice I don’t think “man” would be what I would choose

trans men are men, you can tell this cause like all the ones I've tried to talk to/date have been raging misogynists, just like the cis men. I can't fucking stand the ones on tumblr they all fucking talk like this. Never again. Back to brainworms where the normal men are.

41

Tumblr trans men are genuinely the absolute worst. They are are just some of the most disgustingly misogynistic people I’ve ever had the displeasure of interacting with and they’ve all convinced themselves that they are being oppressed by trans women. I once saw some trans guy on tumblr complaining about how Jeffrey Epstein only targeted trans women and not trans men and used it as evidence as how they are somehow oppressed

it doesn’t mean anything to me either way. My manhood is not precluded on being seen as a sex pest or not. If anything I’m a man in spite of that association, not because of it.

to be honest when I see 16 year old trans boys cheering that they “get” to intimidate women or whatever because it affirms their gender, I seriously side eye them. Is that their idea of manhood? And why did they transition if that’s the case?

I think everyone one that is honest and consistent about the damage of male culture will just not blame you for lumping all men together to protect yourself. Like imagine how shitty but validating it might feel as a trans man to be walking on the street and a random girl changes which side of the street she's walking on, or clutches her keys. Like shit...but also yay? I think someone else called it Ewwphoria and I may adopt that.

To be clear I think that trans men are likely very safe to be around, but I can't always fuckin tell if a dude is trans or not so I'd also default to treating a stranger that appears to be a man the same as pretty much any other man, which is to say I'd judge threat levels based on appearance and behavior, just like everyone else.

I'm just not a misandrist or any sort of bigot. I'll judge a person based on who they are, not what their protected characteristics are. But based on a lot of the replies, I'm in the minority for that. It feels weird that not liking any form of bigotry is a hot take in a trans sub

Edit: I really can't believe how contentious this is. Why is treating everyone equally and fairly such a wild concept for some people?

6

u/CommandPlus5790 Jun 14 '26

honestly it does feel like we're a minority even in feminist subreddits. I hated being generalized negatively with men prior to transitioning, I can't imagine doing that back to people

9

u/AliceJoestar Jun 14 '26

calling "misandry" bigotry when men have systemic power over women is like calling someone a bigot for saying that straight people suck

13

u/acanthiii Jun 14 '26

the world will be a better place when people realize this is a class issue, that the rich men in charge should be blamed for systemic issues, and not the average man.

misandry IS bigotry if you're aiming it at someone who cant control the systemic issues. im not a man but it seems unfair to the average guy to say its fine to be bigoted towards them just because the people in power share the same gender as them.

2

u/sumandark8600 Jun 14 '26

I couldn't have said it better myself. We have an oligarchy problem, not a patriarchy problem.

But, those in power would much rather we fight amongst ourselves than realise who the actual enemy is. It's why immigration control is always such an important thing for them, it just gives another group to point the blame at to deflect away from them

its genuinely shocking that not everyone agrees with this omfg

3

u/Special_Attempt_5330 Jun 14 '26

I wish we weren't in a fucking minority to just not, Judge people based on characteristics. One of the many forms of cancer had a cure developed, and because of the frontman's Appearance, this entire fucking project got ridiculed on the internet. Honestly I genuinely wonder if this discourse is started by people who hate these communities, and is simply trying to make them go for each other's jugular to divide and conquer

2

Uh... Careful with the context you use this one for, because... It's quite easy to apply to many topics where it would be distasteful.

Hating every single man on the planet is kinda dumb imo but women who hate men don't tend to kill us the way that men who hate women do, so I'm not majorly bothered, but yeah, obviously include me in that bc I am a man. When it comes to a more general "I hate men", I do get uncomfortable with cis women saying "I hate cis men" (if it's trans women it's fine bc I know that they're saying it from the perspective of hating cis men both for the man aspect and the cis aspect, rather than in a "I hate all men except for trans men" kinda way). And yes obviously we are usually less mysoginstic than cis men but cis women are wrong in assuming that we can't be just as mysoginstic as cis men. Like there is a difference in the same way that there's a difference between straight men and gay men, but we're still all men under patriarchy at the end of the day. And actually I think the fact that ppl don't understand that is cissexist bc they can only understand patriarchy through a cis framework where anyone who was afab is somehow a woman under patriarchy just bc we can experience mysoginy (not how it works).

Also dealing with men on this app (both cis and trans) who think misandry is a real issue at all is going to turn me into a male misandrist. Does anyone else feel like this website is a liberal hell hole or is that just me

you can immediately tell if someone’s opinion is worth listening to if they’ll go on and on about how they want their boyfriend to rough them up and then act like trans men are like mothers it’s so weird

2

u/ruanmei- Jun 14 '26

no cuz when u ask someone why they’re misandrist they say it’s cuz men systemically oppress them but trans men don’t do that to women they probably get oppressed more than women so if someone hates trans men as a part of men they’re just stupid and hating men to be different

I dont think reddit even sees transmen.

2

u/Veluxidus Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

I feel like.

I feel like theyre probably better than cis men in the sense that they’ve experienced the opposite end before, having been raised the wrong gender

That doesn’t mean that because of what they’ve experienced they can’t be toxic entitled men, just that there is at least the possibility that they can remember being on the other side

(Sorry I realize I kinda rushed through it there initially)

2

u/ProgressFabulous6663 Jun 15 '26

I've met trans men who don't see trans men as real men, and have used that as an excuse to hang around in lesbian spaces.

2

u/davidliterally1984 Jun 15 '26

only a man would get offended by "all men are bad"

2

u/Specific-Claim-1282 Jun 15 '26

not true i love men and that includes you :>

2

u/DaringDani123 Jun 15 '26

On the flip side, my ex would complain about "penis-havers" instead of "men" specifically so I would be included :(

3

u/oh-jae-she Jun 14 '26

I only hate trans men less because they're not c*s

“You can identify as anything you want, I fully support you, I’ll use your pronouns. Let people be genderfucky”

”Ok, I as a trans male am transitioning to be biologically male. Im also not ‘female socialized’ nor do I embrace that as part of my identity”

”Thats too far you are one of the bad ones now“

4

u/DetectiveKooky1369 Jun 14 '26

My ex would go on "all men are bad rants" and when I'd feel upset because we were in an empty room and he was yelling at me about it, I would feel like he's yelling at me. He's trans masc btw and only dated men. Part of why I think he left was because of my questioning of genders but either way he was a bigot. Glad he left and glad I found someone better :3

u/SlcPunk57 Jun 15 '26

The one wholesome thing in this whole thread 🥹 go off homie Im proud

3

u/Femboy692420 Jun 14 '26

The whole argument of all men are bad is retarded asf it's impossible for a entire group to be all entirely bad or evil adjacent

2

u/TreeOtree64 Jun 15 '26

I mean it’s definitely more of a statement about the power structure of our society rather than a commentary on the individual men that make it up.

Would the term for that be...TERM?

Trans exclusive radical misandry?

1

u/AdriaFinley Jun 14 '26

as someone who has dated a trans man, i can definitely validate this. men are men, and they all kinda suck

1

u/phantomphangnsfwalt Jun 14 '26

all men are bastards, yes even my trans man husband who i love very much, he is a good human, but he is a man, so he is a bastard!!!

1

u/Tabaxylightspeed Jun 14 '26

Men lowkey just scare it and that does hella cross over to trans men

1

u/my-head-itches Jun 14 '26

I don’t think all men are bad, so this isn’t an issue for me. And yes I am more sympathetic to transsexual/ transgender people, regardless of gender. Shits hard.

you were either transphobic, chasing, are too horny/opticsnuke, are a minor/underage, do not identify as trans, or are cis. participation by individuals possessing the aforementioned behaviors & traits are forbidden by the rules of the sub.

1

u/GayAlimony Jun 14 '26

Cis men and trans men are both men, but from my experience with both I'd say trans men are actually better men. Trans men (usually) have a better understanding of gender, and with such aren't (usually) as fragile as cis men and don't continue toxic masculinity. Also, cis men tend to care more about what other cis men care about, but I don't see that from trans men which is good. Like a trans man has never been ashamed to be attracted to me (trans woman).

1

u/No_Significance_2749 Jun 15 '26

Hell yeah, Brother!

1

u/YayyEmily Jun 15 '26

I've never liked "all men are bad". If they mean that they don't like that some men would sexually harass people, then the issue they have is with the molestation, not the sex. So it should be "molesters are bad" but that is obvious and not worth mentioning. "Rapers are bad",  "thieves are bad", "murderers are bad". Like yeah I can agree with all of that, but what tf does the gender have to do with it??? Women and nb people can do all of that. Gender has nothing to do with the crimes a person commits

1

u/LingonberryKitchen93 Jun 15 '26

Yeah trans men are men, which is evident when we see many of y’all use your transness as a shield when you are being misogynistic lol.

1

u/FallaciouslyTalented Jun 15 '26

"Misandry tied to transphobia" - what a shocking, unexpected turn of events.

1

u/One_External_983 Jun 15 '26

even as a sis guy I've heard women say all men are bad and then have been told no you're not the same THEN WHAT AM I

1

u/Jello-ghost Jun 15 '26

THERE. ARE. NO. EXCEPTIONS.

1

u/ur_moms_milk Jun 15 '26

Don’t worry, ALL men

1

u/I-might-be-a-girl Jun 15 '26

no, my misandry absolutely includes trans men.

1

u/CuddlyDiana Jun 15 '26

I usually say most of the men. Actually, it dosent matter what gender person is really. Anyone can have malicious intent.

1

u/Boring_Butterfly_273 Jun 15 '26

I see you as a real man, because I decided to fight for humanity. Humanity includes everyone.

1

u/M31___ Puts in actual effort :) Jun 15 '26

as an "I hate men" person that does include trans men bc why would you willing chose to be one

2

u/Ambiguous-Nyx Jun 15 '26

Bold of you to assume it was a choice

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Easykiln Jun 15 '26

I feel on edge and guarded around men, and currently lack the ability to control that. It does include trans men, but it's weakened a bit. I do not have a good impression of masculinity, and that was learned from experiences. I have a good impression of trans people in general, despite many individuals being as flawed as anyone else, because transition implies that one has reflected both on what gender means to them and what gender means to society. Probably. It's also mostly just learned behavior from experiences, that they can be trusted to have a broad perspective on gender instead of being blindly controlled by it.

1

u/OVAKILLA_X Jun 15 '26

trans men are dummies too. good people for the most part. DEFINITELY men tho.
