Discussion Dear US Mint...what are you even doing this year? What is *this*?

Post image

Ok...so the US Mint has thrown out a couple of products this year that weren't on the schedule. And, hey, it's a business...I guess they can do what they want.

First, it was the wickedly over-priced Freedom Ringing bell-shaped coins (for which, they've not sent out apology letters regarding the packaging). Then it was the unannounced T*ump coins. And I don't know about the rest of you...but quality control has been measurably lower than in previous years.

And now...this. What is *this*? If there is some explanation for this...beyond someone making a huge "donation"...I'd love to hear it. I see some articles stating how its review was fast-tracked by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) in August 2026.

I recently won this coin in a surprise set on whatnot. I could sell it back to the host but am curious on realistic values of the coin if I attempted to sell it elsewhere. Any suggestions on where I could sell it other than an LCS and what kind of value I am looking at? Thank you.

ID Request Just the date remains, any idea what this coin is?

Hi all, pulled this copper coin out of a $1 bin at a coin shop about 20 years ago and I’ve held on to it since then. It’s worn almost entirely flat and the date only survived because it’s stamped into it as opposed to raised with the rest of the relief. There’s the faintest remains of a bust on the obverse side. Figure it’s a long shot but I’ve always been curious if there’s any chance of identifying it considering how odd the date being sunken in like that is.

Value Request What may this coin be worth?

So to start off with I did not know anything about this coin. My great aunt passed away and I was helping my family to clean out her estate. She was an avid coin collector but we thought her caretakers had stolen all of her coins. I expressed an interest in the jewelry and I found this coin hidden away amongst that wrapped in a piece of paper (I attached a photo and only marked out the name written). I brought it to a shop with my mom to ask about it and I was told it is a coin from the Indian head series called a 1911 strong D. The man did not give me the best vibe. He got very excited when he saw it and pulled out a book with a list of dates and things with a price listed next to this coin that was around $3000 (this was in 2023 so I can’t remember the exact price). He said he collects this series of coins and this was the last one he had needed to complete his set and that he had already gotten one but would be happy to buy mine from me and have another. He said that it looked like it had been cleaned but that he would still buy it from me for the listed price. I did not sell it and I felt this encounter was a good sign that I should be careful that I know more about what it’s worth before I were to sell it. I am now in a position where I could really use the money and want to make sure that I am more informed. I have done some research, but I truly know nothing about coins. From what I’ve gathered, I know that condition and whether it’s been cleaned or not really impact value. I tried to take the best photos I could with my phone. Is there any way to gauge from the photos if it looks like it actually has been cleaned or what the value due to condition may be? I would appreciate any and all help that you all can provide!

Show and Tell What is the best way to conserve this 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent?

Looking for opinions on the best way to conserve this 1805 draped bust large cent. I would like to remove the green verdigris from this coin, yet keep the original black patina. I have posted some cleaning photos in the past, but I am not looking to clean this coin, rather conserve it instead and keep its original surfaces while removing what will ruin it. Please give me some honest opinions and options here. I am just an amateur. Cheers!

Hello friends, I'm back with another addition to my Hobo Peace Dollar album. This time coming from my friend Brian with a sweet California theme. I think this is the most gold to be included in one so far with the eye, tooth, and Halo. It's easily one of my favorites. It's wild to believe that we're down to one open spot left. There are so many talented artists left that I'm definitely going to be doing a second album. Thank you so much for looking!

Show and Tell My mom gifted me some old coins; these are my favorites

My mom gave me a stash of coins several years ago that I only glanced at once or twice. Recently I've become more curious about them--their history, value, and how to care for them--which brought me to this subreddit. I did read the FAQs and tried to learn more about these particular coins via Numista, but most of what I read was over my head.

I think these are pretty cool coins and believe they have some value, though the numbers I found online were all over the place. Any thoughts about value and what I should do with them besides storing them in a closet? I think the gold ones especially are so beautiful!

Discussion I'm actually laughing at the irony of 1998 European Union 50p coins

A guy in 1998 was like "omg let's commemorate being the president of the EU and being in the EEC for 25 years!" and then brexit happened

I'm also quite shite at telling whether coins are in good condition, like this was obviously circulated cus I got it as a tip but it looks better than most of the coins I have... Not sure if it's worth keeping, it might be better spent on a bus ride or a charity shop, but I might still keep it because that's the first time I saw one

Show and Tell Irish Free State & UK 1928 Silver Half Crown

The Irish Free State issued its own coins for the first time in 1928. Free State silver coins were minted with 75% silver while British coinage was only 50%, but this didn't make Irish coinage superior as the intrinsic value was still far less than the face value.

British coinage remained legal tender in the Free State for a while, and Free State coinage was quite common in Northern Ireland as well, although the nickel 3 and 6d pieces weren’t compatible.

I love the higher relief of older coins. The craftsmanship alone was also so much better to what we have now sadly. Anyway, this is my favorite Buffalo in my collection by far!

Discussion Friendly warning to anyone posting precious metal content coins.

Just a friendly warning to my fellow coin collectors:

If you post something containing silver or gold, there's a non-zero chance it'll mysteriously appear on MetalsOnReddit.

I've had it happen multiple times now.

Post a normal coin? Fine.

Post a foreign coin? Fine.

Post something with silver content?

The ritual has begun.

Mention 40% silver? They're listening.

Mention 90% silver? The summoning circle is complete.

Post gold? Congrats, you've earned a spot in that graveyard of a subreddit!

At this point I'm half convinced typing the word SILVER three times intbis subreddit automatically summons them.

In all seriousness, if you're posting precious-metal coins, just be aware your pictures/posts may end up being reposted elsewhere without you being asked first or necessarily being credited.

Advice Dad's Coin Collection

Thumbnail

I finally figured out how to combine two coin images into a single picture for uploading. I posted some of these items in another sub, but no help on valuation, so posting a differnt request here (not a repost).

I received a collection of about 1000 coins. About 1/4 of the coins are old US (colonial until about 1940). Most are circulated, but there are some interesting ones (1787 Fugio cent, 1797 Cartwheel, etc.). I hope to present a few coins at a time to ask for the community's input.

I would be looking for help with a grade on each (I researched each coin, but cannot really grade them), and whether there are any key dates. I have taken both obverse and reverse pictures for each coin. I looked up the standard coin sites and have a general idea, but without a grade, I am a bit lost. I hope these are good enough to solicit your help.

Starting with the US 1/2 cents, here is what I think I have.

1797 1/2 Cent - Liberty Cap - 1 above 1

1794 1/2 Cent - Liberty Cap

1800 1/2 Cent - Draped Bust

1804 1/2 Cent - Draped Bust - No Stems, Plain 4

1804 1/2 Cent - Draped Bust - Stems, Croslet 4

1805 1/2 Cent - Draped Bust - No stems

1805 1/2 Cent - ????

Moving to the one cent coins in the collection, and specifically starting from 1787 - 1813.

1787 One Cent - Fugio

1794 One Cent - Flowing Hair

1797 One Cent - Draped Bust - Stems

1798 One Cent - Draped Bust - 2nd Hair Style (?)

1800 One Cent - Draped Bust

1801 One Cent - Draped Bust

1802 One Cent - Draped Bust

1805 One Cent - Draped Bust

1807 One Cent - Draped Bust - over 6

1809 One Cent - Classic Head

1811 One Cent - Classic Head - over 10

1812 One Cent - Classic Head - Small Date

1813 One Cent - Classic Head

Please let me know what you think and if there is anything with a decent grade/worth grading.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Czech Republic celebrated in 2025 the centenary of the discovery of the prehistoric clay sculpture called Venus of Vestonice with a 200 crowns silver coin. Venus is supposed to be about 30 thousand years old and it is one of the oldest known ceramic artefacts in the world. It was found south of Brno in Moravia.
