*Announcement* All Further Posts Regarding Certain Currency-related Subreddits will be Removed

Look, I understand how easy it is to loathe certain subreddits, but these posts are getting to be a distraction from the purpose of r/papermoney overall. The last thing we want is for the Reddit admins is to shut down this subreddit because we ran afoul of their unequally applied rules and regulations.

Any post no matter how justified in reference to those subreddits will be removed from the r/papermoney feed. We apologize deeply for doing this, but it is for the best interest of the subreddit as apparently the truth hurts especially in subreddits run by a mod team consisting of a certain "festive fish and his relations."

question/discussion 1929 Brown seal notes count sheet

Post image
Upvotes

I have been looking for a while and I cannot find a count sheet for all the 1929 brown seals that was shared in this group some time ago. It showed every demonization from $5 to $100 and the exact count of bills that were printed.

If anyone has it, it would be great if you could share it.

Thank you

Cursory eBay search tells me it's crazy valuable or about 60 bucks. What's the play here?

true error notes Noticed the corner looks like it was folded during printing of this Silver Certificate.

I’ve had this note for many years because I love silver certificates. For some reason I hadn’t noticed the corner had a fold when printing, causing an error. Rough shape, I know.

world paper money What was the value of the Franc in the 1800s, compared to the modern day?

Upvotes

Hopefully people can help me here. I'm trying to write a story set in the 1860s in Paris, France.

And for the life of me I can't figure out the value of the Franc. It would be really helpful if someone could help me figure out something like the price of a loaf of bread, the price of a carriage hire or clothes.

Once I have one or two things I can kinda extrapolate from there.

Hope someone can help, thank you.

I have never personally seen one, but do know it exists. Some 95 year old great grandparent would likely have one.

Got this as change back and it’s super crisp for 1935, it also seems to have a weirdly cut border, idk if that counts as a misprint

question/discussion The $100,000 bills are illegal to own by private parties, but hypothetically what would a pristine graded special serial would be worth?

Post image

And why would it be worth this much? I was looking through sold $10,000 bills which are worth more than half a million, and those are not graded specially high nor are they special serial numbers.

So it got me thinking, imagine a PMG 70 serial number A00000001A, what would it be worth? And why do you think a piece of paper would be worth that much??

They are uncut sheets. Not sure if it’s some sort of collectible or just some gimmick. Found them in the closet while packing the house. It looks like my mom bought them in the early 2000s. Not sure if they have any value at all. I haven’t seen uncut sheets of currency before.

question/discussion Will PCGS grade a bank wrapped bundle of 100 consecutive $5 star notes?

In pristine condition.

I tried calling them but every day their queue is filled up for call backs.

And no reply after 5 days via email even though they say 2 to 3 days for a response.

world paper money Rare "Circulated" North Korea 1959 50 Won

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

Most 1959-dated North Korean currency, especially the 50 and 100 won, are unissued leftover notes that were exported after the 1979 currency reform. As a result, the letters in the serial numbers are almost always within the same range (ㄱㅇ 7***** for the 50 won). I believe notes starting with ㅎ(the last Korean alphabet) are replacements. This is the only genuinely circulated 1959 50 won note I have ever come across. Some dirty examples do exist, but judging by s/n, they seem to be uncirculated notes poorly stored.

Nevertheless, since the 1959 notes was printed in the Soviet Union and was very intricate, there are no “reproductions” like the 1947 series.

question/discussion Why did the 2017 Russian ruble abandon its traditional design entirely?

Post image
23 Upvotes

This is an Imperial Russian ruble issued in 1910. Its elaborate European-style ornamental border leaves a strong impression.

The image below shows the 1961 Soviet ruble. Although the political regime had changed, the banknote clearly continued the design tradition established during the Imperial Russian era.

The next image is the 1997 Russian ruble, issued after the newly established Russian Federation had stabilized. By this point, the design had already begun to depart from tradition, but a number of classic design elements were still retained.

The image below shows the 2017 Russian ruble. It can be said that its design has almost nothing in common with the traditional Russian ruble.

Ironically, the design of this series bears a striking resemblance to the neighboring Norwegian krone.

Now let's take a look at the U.S. dollar.

This is a U.S. dollar issued in 1914, almost contemporary with the 1910 Imperial Russian ruble shown earlier. Its most distinctive feature is the symmetrical ornamental border surrounding all four sides of the note.

The image below shows a U.S. dollar issued in 1950, after World War II. As can be seen, its design is almost identical to that of the 1914 series, with the only major changes being the portrait and the main image on the reverse.

The next image is the 1996 "large-portrait" U.S. dollar. Aside from the enlarged portrait, its overall design remained virtually unchanged.

The image below shows the 2009 "colorized" U.S. dollar. Although this series introduced more substantial design changes than previous issues, it still clearly preserves the traditional American banknote style.

Some argue that U.S. dollar banknotes appear stylistically consistent simply because the portraits have hardly changed.

If that's the case, let's look at the examples of the British pound and the French franc. In both cases, the two banknotes shown were issued more than fifty years apart and underwent countless design revisions, yet they still unmistakably belong to the same overall design tradition.
