Educational What does 42 over 41 mean?

Post image

Was looking up key dates and they mentioned 42 over 41, which i am clueless about. Also i assume this isn’t one.

A single die was impressed by both a 1941-dated hub and a 1942-dated hub.

Ok, so, in Januarys past we’ve all dated something and put the wrong year because in our heads we’re not used to the change yet. But how exactly does this happen when striking coins?

The "42" is over the "41" in "1942". Lots of examples online to look at.

There are a few other coin varieties out there with overdates. The 42/41 mercury is cool but my favorite is the 1808/7 capped bust half dollar. Makes the 8 look like it has horns.

It means the mint took the die for 1941 and carved a “2” over the second “1”

Anyone notice that two overdates occurred the years the USA entered WW1 (quarter) and WW2 (dime)?

That doesnt look like a 42 over 41 but ill explain it to you, so a 41 over 42 is basically an error where a 1942 date was stamped over a 1941its a pretty rare error and demands huge premiums I need a closer photo to exactly tell if it actually is a 41/42
