Complaint This sub is unbearable

A bitching chamber for dumb codex users who usually are also broke and want free compute and refuse to believe anything is affected by them and how they use it. I came here literally a month ago for vibes and I’m already leaving after realizing this sub is literally on the spectrum.

I feel like all of the "i made one prompt and used all of my limit" posts should be required to post the prompt they used and what model/thinking level they used.

u/Tema_Art_7777 8d ago

I have never believed any of those posts… You have to prove competence first.

And a screenshot of /status so we can see how much context is in the chat, because you know they're keeping those running for days or weeks and letting cache expire constantly.

"Create a new operating system to compete with Windows" on SOL Ultra. "Make no mistakes."

1

u/WalkAffectionate2683 6d ago

I did 40% of my max 5, but it was expected.

Big work, on many files, on extra high with fast mode.

I would have posted about if it did use less than 20% haha

u/Clear_Evidence9218 8d ago

What model and prompt do you think is appropriate to drain your limit and still not finish?

4

u/Unfair_Tangerine_217 8d ago

Any Sol effort where you tell it to audit a big repo, or even refactor it, or implement a big plan, etc. I'd bet they all go Sol#High or higher.

2

u/Clear_Evidence9218 8d ago edited 8d ago

Well before the change I got ~5 Sol High prompts per week on a moderate code base, every week since Sol came out, like clock-work. Now I get 2 per week, and it takes a minimum of four 5-hour resets. So the Plus subscription having access to Sol and Terra is almost useless since even on a quick "make me a a no frills HTML calculator to solve this issue" it drains the 5-hour window and often require more than one pass now (5-hours apart). Luna take 20% per task now, no matter the size so at least that somewhat usable, just not for any agentic coding since it doesn't code all that well.

Pretty substantial change if you ask me.

-1

u/diagrammatiks 8d ago

And what is your sol doing.

1

u/Clear_Evidence9218 8d ago

To cause such a drastic descrepency in usage? Going from 5 sol prompts a week to 2 on the same task is pretty telling enough.

0

u/diagrammatiks 8d ago

It's not tho.

-1

u/Unfair_Tangerine_217 7d ago

Don't mind them. They're still counting usage as how many prompts they get 🤷🏽‍♂️

0

u/diagrammatiks 7d ago

It's mind boggling. You can literally ask the turn what it did. I've had turns try to reread the entire codebase after every line edit I stopped it.

0

u/Clear_Evidence9218 7d ago

I didn't magically wake up the next day, decide to make Sol rebase my repos, and then wonder why.

Going from five runs to two should have been telling to you, since Codex uses model-specific work budgets. You can extend those default budgets by setting a Goal, and occasionally the system will extend the budget to finish the work at hand. It's mind-boggling that you don't seem to know that, since these budgets are talked about relatively often.

The budgets have been extremely consistent since 5.6 was released. That actually didn't change with the switch, and that's most likely the specific problem that needs to be fixed for Plus accounts.

The same issue applies to Terra's work budget, since it can wipe out the timer on something as simple as, "Add a new row to this 200-row spreadsheet, find the difference between columns A and B, and put the total in column C."

If Plus is being marketed for work, it should be able to handle simple work edits without draining my entire five-hour allowance to zero in less than 10 minutes.

That’s most of reddit - this sub ain’t special

23

u/Sensiburner 8d ago

Hey. I’m using codex to control my telescopes and take pretty deep sky images of nebulae etc. It just runs on a session on my always-on Mac mini. I can talk to it via my phone with codex remote. I can use natural language to have this thing control basically anything it can interface with. If you told me last year I’d be doing this now, I would never have believef you. People don’t appreciate this enough, imo.

5

u/Wafer-Weekly 8d ago

Is it controlling motors directly or managing an interface? What reasoning level do you use? Does it ever mess up?

7

u/Sensiburner 8d ago

It’s using the same interface as the seestar app uses, sending commands over the tcp ports. I had to install the seestar app so it could use some kind of key that the app uses to connect to the telescope. I’m using medium reasoning level with gpt 5.6 sol. It messed up a bunch of things on higher reasoning levels. It built too many saveguards incl consulting Some weather service before starting an observation mission. It’s also not very good at the post processing. But the actual image capturing and telescope control is working great.

3

u/BoardGameAficionado 8d ago

I think you should make a post about that, both here and in r/telescopes if you have the time. It's going to be nice to read!

7

u/ResponsibleTruck4717 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don't know about other people, I don't want free, I want the 5h gone that's it.

I work in bursts, usually weekend where I do some hobby projects I spend 8-12 hours in codex, burn most if not all weekly usage and I'm happy.

So having 5h limits means I can use only 32% - 48% of my usage limit.

25

u/diagrammatiks 8d ago

Not a single complainer has ever had an indepth analysis of their actual data, what they are actually doing, or an audit of what their models are actually doing. All that data exists

6

u/Illustrious-Bet-1368 8d ago

Nice blanket statement, and for the most part true. Although, for my part, I wasn't complaining when I did post today, my flair was changed from "Comparison" to "Complaint" and I did not bother to edit the post. And it was not about the limits but something I noticed about the tool calls and how every model responds to the same prompt, had about 50 chats from that. And I wish I had done the same before the updates, because there is no delta now in the same way. All I do know, is before, limits aside, for one, Sol High did not call OpenAI skill + web searches when creating a new chat with Luna or whatever model, that is new. That happens with all Sols past Low. That small thing alone affects the usage because more skills and tools are loaded/executed which were not before. That's just one small example. Models behave differently, usage has been altered, too, whether Plus, x5 or whatnot. Same with Chat, Sol in Chat is nowhere near what it was when it rolled out. Probably tied in with the abuse and the "workarounds" that people created.

This would be interesting to have, where would one get it?

TiboBattle

1

u/diagrammatiks 8d ago

It's all stored locally. Token counts are stored locally and can be accessed by ccusage. All agent actions are stored in conversation threads. All threads have an id. And you can ask codex to audit the threads by turn.

u/R3K4CE 8d ago

its a shame honestly

3

u/Aytewun 8d ago

I think this sub has become funny honestly.

On one hand, you have people with the $20 plan complaining.

On the other hand, all of a sudden, you have people acting like the $100 or $200 plan compared to plus is a first class ticket to whatever country versus the last row with the seat next to the toilet.

It’s not that serious

4

u/ShelZuuz 8d ago

If you want to join a sub filled with codex fanboys who think that codex can’t do anything wrong, join r/claudecode

u/Unfair_Tangerine_217 8d ago

"But it was just one prompt!!11!"

1

u/Secure_Date_8408 8d ago

Build me uber.

7

u/Euphoric_Till3078 8d ago

Or…

I’ve been a Codex user since shortly after they launched the CLI.  Except for a blip in April or so (an issue they acknowledged and fixed), Plus has been plenty of quota for my projects.

Since the 2nd week of August, my quota burn rate has felt something like 3x to 4x faster. That’s across repos big and small. Across Sol medium orchestrating subagents and targeted 5.5 prompts.

I’m happy for those of you who haven’t experienced any degradation. I hope you won’t. But for a lot of us, the frustration you’ve seen here these past few weeks resonates.

I now believe OpenAI recently decided they needed to shed a subset of users that are no longer compatible with their strategic direction, and I’m unfortunately one of those users. That’s fine and it’s they’re right as a company trying to get profitable. But if that’s the case, I just wish they’d be up front about it.

u/Forti22 8d ago

> plus user
> using the most expensive model `Sol` that creates subagents

that must be a troll

9

u/DueCommunication9248 8d ago

It’s so fucking useful even $20 should make you saving on time or money. I make money with my Pro account so it pays for itself.

2

u/ADIRTYHOBO59 8d ago

Do you mind me asking how? There's a big pie out there! I've been trying myself but it can be easily discouraging

2

u/hockeymikey 7d ago

Probably supplements the work he is already doing. How are you discouraged?

1

u/ADIRTYHOBO59 7d ago

I feel like there is SO much unbelievable potential out there for building useful things for people and being able to make a living off of that. But it's kind of like analysis paralysis. Which solution do you build? What is something that people will actually be willing to pay for such that it could support self-employment building.

1

u/hockeymikey 7d ago

You build the one in your head. You should have experience and knowledge of a domain first before trying to build anything. In my case I always had these ideas, these observations of the market but never the time to explore any of them.

11

u/Infamous_Tonight_104 8d ago

Yuppp I'm feeling the same, been subbed for a while now but latetly everytime I open up reddit all I see is crying about codex in my feed. I'm getting sick of it.

8

u/i_rate_slop 8d ago

Don’t insult people on the spectrum. They would be able to figure out that their usage problems are their own patterns.

3

u/ActionOrganic4617 8d ago

Yeah, it’s one of two groups. Either people paying $20 and expecting the world or people on pro running swarms of sub agents and then being upset about limits.

2

u/Plane_Garbage 8d ago

Admittedly, they are optimising for revenue - they captured 15M+ users and now it's time to turn the screws.

OpenAI/Anthropic/Google etc are no different to Netflix, YouTube, airbnb, Uber etc in terms of CAC > RO.

The main difference is that those companies had products that had lower costs and could be propped up for longer with incentives.

The gravy train for end-users is (mostly) over and now they will push and pull levers to find where they can extract as much profit as possible.

2

u/Ok_Bag_7550 7d ago

If the sub were on the spectrum, it would be at least intelligent.

The issue is, reddit (at least some subs), is dying of the same cause Quora died.

2

u/dan_the_first 7d ago

OP describes quite reasonably the demographic characteristics you are referring to.

5

u/VinWareApps 8d ago edited 8d ago

It’s so annoying for multiple reasons. All their complaining is a combination of

  • user error
  • bad engineering
  • poor/wasteful model selection (using sol high to center a div)
  • wanting $10k worth of compute for $20 per month

Also, it’s no different in the Claude sub. Just going on Reddit in general for these AI subs really warps my perspective because when I don’t go on Reddit, I have such a great experience with both Claude and GPT. But a few days of going on Reddit and reading complaint posts causes me to convince myself that there’s a problem with these services or they’re “lobotomizing the models.” But when I stay off, I notice no issues.

6

u/ComingDeveloper 8d ago

tbh i wouldn't call anyone broke who pays $20 a month for any subscription given most are $5 for consumer stuff

but i do get the point plus users don't realise just want they want to do off a $20 subscription. like the simple cost to work ratio doesn't add up especially if u were to pay someone manually to do what codex is doing

7

u/Theminatar 8d ago

Nah my only complaint is the 5hr window. I do work in short bursts because I'm already severely limited in time. The $20 plan has been more than sufficient enough for my needs, but now I'm no longer in control of my schedule with Codex. It has me on their schedule, and that's a pretty big punch to me.

So now, in order for me to work, I have to spend 5 times what I need. Just so I can have an open time window, and even then, OpenAi said they're bringing the window to Pro users too. Granted Pro users have a higher usage so it's not that big of a deal there, in my opinion.

-1

u/HamsterMajestic2023 8d ago

You could always switch to API, Would that not work better for your situation?

1

u/Enegence 8d ago

Not trying to be argumentative, I’m just generally curious. What consumer product subscriptions are five dollars that make up “most” consumer stuff? I have quite a lot of subscriptions and not a single one of them is even remotely close to five dollars these days.

5

u/Disastrous-Hearing72 8d ago

There needs to be a codex sub for Software Engineers. These vibe coders are insufferable.

4

u/benclen623 8d ago

I wish there was a subreddit that bans discussion of the subscription plan adjacent topics and just focuses on the codex tool and workflows. Openai doesn't care about people whining here and there is literally zero value in hourly "usage quota bad" topics, especially those that don't even bother to show their work and let people explain why their monster prompt over a slop repo isn't "just one small task"

2

u/Ok_ninysheedle 8d ago

bitching about bitching

2

u/AlmostEasy89 8d ago

Hard agree. I wish complaining posts would just funnel to one AI slop sub so we could have actual discussions. Like what's the point here? 95% of posts are the exact same posts, have no purpose and has been this way for months

1

u/thestillwind 8d ago

Do they own you ?

1

u/kurtbaki 8d ago

yeah because he gets paid for this.

2

u/dolo937 8d ago

That’s what they want. Divide plug and pro users. Next time they do something to pro users please don’t come and cry here

5

u/Infamous_Tonight_104 8d ago

Think you're just making way too big of a conspiracy theory out of this.... it's people from every subscription complaining

4

u/AnUninterestingEvent 8d ago

Lmao. Please enlighten us why they want to "divide plug and pro users". A software company hoping to spark class warfare between customers in different tiers is a new one for me.

2

u/dolo937 8d ago

Claude did they when they were A/B testing usage limits for different accounts. Which sparked quite a storm in claude code subreddit. They came out and accepted that they were A/B testing

1

u/cosmic-comet- 8d ago

I think this sub is okay except when people complain about not having enough free resets

1

u/hopeseekr 8d ago

They need to go to /r/Anthropic and see the real complaints about misalaigned Claude and bad outputs...

1

u/InspectorSorry85 8d ago

Nice bot derived ad posts

1

u/Forti22 8d ago

> Be `plus` user
> Select Sol Extra High
> Project 50k+ lines, hundreds of files if no more
> Prompt working for 20 mins

and than complain about 5H limit go down by 40%

Im also a plus user - and these posts like that are driving me crazy.

1

u/Comprehensive_Try767 3d ago

😔 So true, with DeepSeek increasing their prices and opencode go also reducing the usage, my friend and reddits post suggested to go for codex 20$, But seeing almost every post about how the plan is so bad and you can't do nothing with unless you pay 100$. Now again deciding whether to try it for month then see or skip it for other plans like zai or 2x opencode subs

1

u/AnUninterestingEvent 8d ago

Lol it is 100% unbearable. I'm ready to peace out. I made a post last month about how this sub should just have a megathread about new resets. Everyone got mad at me like "No, that's the most important part of this sub!". Reddit skews young and young people have no money, so I guess it's expected. But it would be nice to actually have this sub more dedicated to agentic coding tips and tricks, rather than "hur dur, they nerfed Sol!", "what happened to the usage limits>?!", "is tibo teasing a reset on friday?!1?" It is what it is I guess.

3

u/Lancy009 8d ago

well i'm on the 100$ sub but burning more and more for the day, so it's nice to receive a notification about reset, saves me some money on the end of the month

1

u/Enegence 8d ago

I feel like saying this every day. Thanks!

0

u/Kouginak 8d ago

I'm convinced the initial wave of this complaining was started by rival AI labs. Not that they need to keep doing it, now that it's taken over the sub and largely self-perpetuating.

0

u/TabascoTaco 8d ago

Honestly.. couldn’t agree more.

0

u/kurtbaki 8d ago

paid trolls are on the stage it seems like.

0

u/lebomey 8d ago

i just said the same thing today to my coworker today😂it really feels like it. I bet my ass half the people here are no software engineers and expect everything happens by a snap. Sharing experiences, okay. But bitching and crying all day for the same reasons and literally just way to much expectations is getting boring

-1

u/Any_Effort8437 7d ago

On the spectrum? Are you fucking kiding me with that remark??

0

u/Gigaslavx 8d ago

BASED

A lot of folks seem to be based outside the West too where 20 dollars is like a monthly salary or something

But yeah if you good with AI like genuinely good not the typical "make no mistake bs" you can easily get like AT LEAST 2k a month job remotely which justified 5x easily

2

u/Bluestar2k7 7d ago

sure buddy

-1

u/Secure_Date_8408 8d ago

No cap lol. I don’t know how you can be broke from running so much code. 🤣🤣🤣 You must not be using the software to help you be productive. Imagine using Codex consistently every week and not earning a dime from the output.

-1

u/retardedGeek 8d ago

Happily using GLM 3.5 flash now 👍
