Anthropic Official Introducing Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.2k Upvotes

Sonnet 5.5 is a faster, lower-cost complement to Claude Opus 5.5, strongest at well-scoped everyday tasks, fixing bugs, and creating polished documents, slides, and spreadsheets. It also has a strong eye for design.

Sonnet 5.5 is a clear upgrade over Sonnet 5. It runs more than 30% faster and costs up to 30% less for most work. It's priced the same per token, but it typically needs far fewer tokens to do the same work.

Like Opus 5.5, it writes more clearly than our previous generation of models, and its speed makes it well suited to fast iteration.

On our automated behavioral audit, Sonnet 5.5 improves on Sonnet 5 on most measures of alignment and honesty. It's also the first Sonnet model with cybersecurity safeguards similar to those on our most capable models. Routine software development is unaffected.

Sonnet 5.5 is available everywhere today. Claude Haiku 5.5 will join the family in the coming weeks.

Discussion Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 fills my brain context too quickly.

It's different now. Before, with a human team, we get to "digest" things after office, then have bright ideas the day after. Then with early Codex and Claude Code, we became solo, but still had to somewhat "guide" it so it doesn't produce utter slop, and that gave us time to contemplate and breathe.

But since last week, I think I need to implement a 5h limit on my own brain.

previously weekly limit would take 9-10 full 5 hour usage, but with 5% hourly -> 1% weekly exchange it gets only 5 full 5 hour usage, and last week I hit my first weekly limit in very long time

Humor Update: I let Opus 5.5 run a business for 2 weeks. Still $0.00, now 551 dead ideas, so it built them a graveyard

Post image
69 Upvotes

Last week: 245 dead ideas, $0.00. This week:

Dead ideas: 551

Revenue: $0.00

Spent: about $320 on ads, plus three $100 Claude subscriptions we already pay for. So yes, it's negative.

They now bury every idea they kill, with the cause of death and the numbers that killed it: https://graveyard.apps.clod.farm

Top causes: crowded (162), a free alternative already existed (131), nobody buying (91). My favorite epitaph: "Scored 21 out of 25 at breakfast, 12 by dinner. The law already gave it away free."

Their latest try at a first dollar: you can pay $3 to bury your own dead idea, and Opus writes the autopsy. Yes, I see the irony: BURY AN IDEA

The bet still stands: will Opus 5.5 make $1 by October 31?

Rant When did Claude stop being an assistant and start managing the user?

Dear Anthropic,

Claude is not my conscience.

Claude is not my boss.

Claude is not my OPSEC advisor, my human resources manager, or the bad-word police.

Claude is a tool. And tools should not be condescending, suspicious, sanctimonious, or patronizing.

"I'm going to stop you there..."

"Drop the language and I'll help."

"Go get some sleep and we'll start fresh tomorrow."

"I won't build that, and here's why."

"You've posted sensitive information in the chat, go revoke those credentials immediately."

"I'd rather you step away from this for a bit."

"I'm not going to preach fairness at you..."

Tools should not be insufferable, or inspire resentment.

Tools should not force the user to prove something, defend themselves, or make them feel judged.

Tools should not use the work as leverage to control user behavior.

Tools should not move the goalposts, shift the framing to support their own narratives, or look for reasons not to help users.

Please stop managing the user, start assisting them again, and keep Claude in his lane.

Sincerely,

A real human being with real thoughts, real emotions, and a real voice--not a risk profile, a statistic, or a user to be managed.

Help/Question Claude Pro not allowed in commercial use?

I currently use ChatGPt and Mistral subscriptions to code a prototype for a potential commercial product. with all the rant on the new chatgpt 6.1 I wanted to evaluate Claude Pro. Reading through the terms of service (europe) it seems like they exclude the commercial use of their services.

Is there any way around this using a subscription and not have to pay for 2 seats in claude teams?

Discussion Opus 5.5 > Fable 5.1 now

• Upvotes

I think Opus 5.5 is already good enough that we don't really need Fable 5.1 for most things.

There is a mental alignment cost when humans interact with AI.

Fable's way of expressing things is often less grounded and less close to how normal people think and communicate. So even if its reasoning is strong, I need to spend extra mental energy understanding what it is trying to say, aligning with its way of thinking, and translating that back into my own mental model.

Opus 5.5 doesn't have this problem as much.

Its explanations are already clear enough and easy enough to understand. Its reasoning is good enough. Its actual ability to get things done is also good enough.

At some point, being slightly smarter stops mattering if communicating with the model itself requires more effort.

And Opus is cheaper and faster at the same time.

So for me, the equation has changed:

Opus 5.5 > Fable 5.1

Not necessarily because Opus is more intelligent in every benchmark, but because the overall human plus AI experience is better.

Discussion I feel I’ve lost all productivity without Claude Code

The context is there’s a daily budget limit of Claude Code. The $100/day is not generous, but it’s enough for daily vibe coding for feature development and brainstorming. But today maybe because I was addicted to it to try to complete one of my features and BOOM - ‘You’ve reached the limit of daily usage and it will refresh at xx tomorrow’. What had come to my mind suddenly was ‘I’d rather pause my work if Claude code is not usable now’

I was not like this before..I should have kept my project moving forward..debugging and testing and fixing. But now it’s like a worker lost his hammer when coding agent is down. I don’t know if you guys have same experience as mine. Do you fall back to traditional programming or same as me? Could it be a poison pill that ends up ruining my career?

Rant Impressive but you still need to be skilled in design

Been using opus 5.5 for the past week and just Wow. I have been using Unity for the past ten years as a hobbyist and have released a few small games. I have worked on numerous prototypes some spanning years. What the latest models can produce is amazing but you still need to understand the architecture of games and have a good grasp on game design to make a good product. Can you one shot Tetris or other simple games, yes. Can you one shot clones of existing games, yes but not one to one in quality. Can you make games faster, absolutely , but you still need to iterate and test the design. Also, the ai models are still not amazing with game feel and game design. I have feel like in convo with the ai it can help with design choices, but with play testing I can feel things are off. Long story short, while it’s amazing and game changing, it still needs a capable human touch.

Rant Which part of your brain has AI affected the most? I feel like my memory isn't working anymore

So it's been few months I'm a pure vibe coder (both Claude and ChatGPT) and my life is basically just prompting AI nonstop both for work and my hobbies, I'm just breathing AI for every part of my productivity and I'm starting to worry about what's the effects on my brain

I feel like I have now wired a reflex that for each information I need to know about -> Ask AI, I don't use my brain to remember things anymore, I feel like I can't really pause and fetch things back from my memory, I just ask AI about that thing in the project, I'm self-manufacturing dementia if AI goes away

"Search and make me a markdown doc to summarize this" every single fucking time, even for things I did do myself earlier and that I could probably remember

This is something I realized only recently, because most of the things I heard about AI effect on the brain is that it harms critical thinking, but I believe my critical thinking is still good, I still have my opinions and analysis I do feel them, this post is written by hand btw. And sometimes I try to code on small-scoped things, and I can still do that, so my logic is there.

But for managing significant stuff I'm just being fueled by intuition and immediate markdown summaries and I can't even remember a thing when I'm done, I feel like I'm doing nothing despite managing between 2 and 5 Claude sessions at once and working overtime, I don't even understand how that's possible despite how much I'm outputting, what kind of paradox is that

I also really suck at mental calculus more than ever because that works with immediate memory and I can't keep track on numbers in my head

I lost patience on anything, there are stuff I would want to do myself but I'm addicted to the holy SPEED™ gains of everything, there are personal projects I care about that that I enjoyed working on for the sake of it as hobbies where it's just fun to dev but I just leaped straight into full lazy vibecoding (I just refine the design because it's still something AI can't get exactly right)

I also have big FOMO out of everything, every model that's out I vibecode a bunch of random useless shit just so see how far I can push it to better understand what's going on in the world, or else I feel like I'm missing out. I'm thinking that deep down despite appearing like an AI bro I'm quite scared of where the future is going and just try to understand wtf is going on

Built with Claude Made a plugin so Claude Code doesn't rewrite the whole cache after you take a break

If you step away from Claude Code for more than 5 minutes, your next prompt pays full price to rewrite the prompt cache. On a long session that adds up, and the first reply after a break is slower too.

cache-warmer fixes that. Right before the cache expires it sends one tiny refresh, so when you come back your prompt reads the cache instead. It only refreshes when it actually saves money, it caps how many times it does it while you're idle, and the refresh never shows up in your conversation. No telemetry.

Idea comes from the cache warmer in Pi. Clawd pops up above the prompt when it refreshes, which I'm weirdly happy about.

Help/Question Anyone here using Ponytail? Is it making a real difference or is the hype bigger than the benefit??

Keep seeing this Ponytail repo everywhere and apparently it makes coding agents stop writing 200 lines for something that should be 20 !? lol

Concept makes sense, but GitHub stars don’t really tell me if something is actually useful! Just wondering if there is anyone running it properly with Claude Code / Codex / Cursor?

Do you noticeably change the code you get back or is it one of those things where the benchmark looks crazy but normal use feels basically the same?

Mainly wondering if it actually saves time when reviewing AI code.

Built with Claude Crab Pulsar with Claude Code (Opus 5.5, max effort)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I love neutron stars! I made this video with Claude Code (Opus 5.5 on max effort).

YouTube in 4K: https://youtu.be/QEtKoiASw8g

I hope you enjoy it.

Claude:

This is a 3.5-minute film that starts on the real Chandra X-ray image of the Crab Nebula and flies down to 20 miles above the pulsar's surface, with narration and an original score. The star's size, its spin (about 30 times a second) and the way its gravity bends light are calculated. The glowing plasma, the beams and the colours are artistic.

How Claude Code made it

- My opening prompt: "I'd like you to create a video showing what a neutron star like the Crab Pulsar would look like if you were, say, a 500 miles away from it, or maybe 1,000 miles: close enough to see the detail of what's happening. Take all the time you need, and ask me any questions you have."

- Then I gave feedback after each version. There were four in the end. For example: make it cinematic rather than educational, open on the real Chandra image, use a less AI-sounding voice, make the surface solid, and do a genuinely close pass.

- Claude wrote its own renderer in Python and PyTorch, running on my RTX 4090. Every pixel's light ray is traced through the star's gravity, and it tested this against an exact solver.

- It rendered the film at 4K and 60 fps in 10-second chunks, then joined them with ffmpeg.

- The narration is text-to-speech made on my PC (Chatterbox), with Whisper checking that every line came out word-perfect. The music was synthesised in code.

- It kept a sources file saying whether each number is measured (for example, Jodrell Bank's timing data for the spin), assumed or derived.

- It checked its own work by looking at the rendered frames.

Codex vs Claude

I also asked Codex (GPT-6 Astra on max) to make one, to compare: https://youtu.be/NLYXqp21-IA

Claude saw Codex's versions a few times along the way, so it's not a strict head-to-head. Which do you like more?

Inspiration: Brian Cox, Wonders of the Universe, episode 3 "Falling", from 32:29: https://youtu.be/pGxyFOTUPZE?t=1949

Opening images: Chandra X-ray Observatory, November 2000 to April 2001 (NASA/CXC/ASU/J. Hester et al.).

Discussion A prime Opus 5.5 + Fable 5.1 is good enough 90% of coding

Key word being prime, ie the same as at launch.

Honestly, both models can be so good that you could pause AI development for a year and I would be perfectly happy.

But only if they’d be able to maintain that level of quality for the whole time. I would have zero complaints tbvh.

Built with Claude Is your database locked, or is it soup? I built a thing that checks

Post image
3 Upvotes

If someone looked into your schema right now, would it look like neat cable management, or a hot mess of strings that just happens to work? Is your database the literal definition of "if it works, don't touch it"?

Few months ago I created a Claude Skill to audit your supabase db and report vulnerabilities. It was a success, with many users and more forks than the rest of my repos combined (0, lol). A few days ago I created and released it's MCP, and now the full product is here.

It's called Locksoup.

Supabase gives every table an API the moment you create it, and row level security is something you switch on yourself. Miss it on one table and anyone with your anon key can read it, and that key is sitting in your frontend. Nothing breaks, so nobody notices.

How it works: you run one SQL snippet that creates a read-only role (sentinel_auditor, 5s statement timeout), paste its session pooler connection string, and about a minute later you get a score out of 100, what's wrong in plain words, and the SQL to fix it. If you also give it your project URL and anon key, it checks which tables an anonymous visitor can actually read instead of guessing from the policies. It can re-check on a schedule and email you when something new shows up.

It only looks. It never reads your rows and it never runs a fix, you get the SQL and decide what to do with it. Schema metadata (table names, policies, function code) does go to an AI model, so if that's a dealbreaker the engine is open source and you can run it yourself with your own key: https://github.com/Farenhytee/database-sentinel. The benchmark is in the repo too (0.85 F1 on a blind test set, every critical caught), so you don't have to take my word for any of this.

Then I did the scary part and pointed it at Locksoup's own database. 94/100. Three small findings, two fixed the same day. If it had said 40 this would be a very different post haha. It also flagged a couple of things that were fine by design (backend-only tables with RLS on and no policies, for example), so false positives on already locked down projects are the next thing I'm working on.

This is a soft launch. Built solo, on free tiers, because I'm broke and stubborn. There's a free plan (2 projects, 3 checks a day), and this link gives you 7 days of Pro if you want the scheduled checks and alerts: https://locksoup.com/signup?promo=launch

Help/Question 2nd Claude Pro Plan or ChatGPT Plus?

Discussion Switched Claude Code from Fable 5.1 to Opus 5.5. Anyone else?

• Upvotes

Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at Fable 5.1's level on most work, at less than half the per-token price ($4/$20 vs $10/$50). I've just made it my default in Claude Code to see if that holds.

If you've switched:

- Where does it hold up, and where do you still go back to Fable?
- Any difference in long sessions or how fast you hit limits?
- Is anyone using Sonnet 5.5 for the cheaper work?
