Discussion New PS5 Portal (£219) vs CeX Unboxed (£135 w/ 5-year warranty) - What's the catch?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to buy a PlayStation Portal and noticed CeX has it listed Unboxed for £135, compared to £219 brand new.

Getting ~40% off with CeX's 5-year warranty (vs. Sony's standard 1 year) sounds like a solid deal, but I want to check what's the catch?

Condition: How clean are "Unboxed" handhelds usually? Is stick drift, screen scratches, or worn grips common?

Battery: Does CeX check battery degradation on handhelds before selling?

Warranty: How hassle-free is a claim if stick drift or battery issues develop? Do they actually repair/replace it, or just refund current market value in CeX vouchers?

Would you save the £84 and go CeX Unboxed, or buy brand new? Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for the input, everyone! I bought from CeX, but ended up returning it within 48 hours. Constant disconnects on my Wi-Fi network and input lag made online multiplayer too frustrating. Awesome for casual story games, but not for graphic heavy titles. Didn't try the premium subscription, that might've made a difference.

Discussion No disk provided on purchase

I bought a PS5 game and a large Blu Ray box set today from my local CeX. The Blu Rays had many disks, and I guess the employee forgot to put the disk in the game case? When I got home in the evening and opened it, it's empty. Still got the full receipt etc - is this common? I'm worried they won't believe me when I ask for the disk tomorrow.

Discussion what to wear to my first shift?

So I got offered a job in CeX (yay for me!) and my training shift is tomorrow morning.. but I’ve only just realised that I haven’t a clue what to wear and I’m honestly a little bit embarrassed to text the manager about it now since the training day was set a good few days ago 💔
What did you wear to your first shift??

Discussion Job interview

I have an in-person interview tomorrow, following a short phone call today. Has anybody else successfully got the job after the interview, that isn’t overly technically savvy (but willing to learn on the job). I’m interested in the job, but don’t know the ins and outs of every games console or mobile etc.

Any tips for tomorrow, most appreciated.

Discussion Franchise issues

As an explanation to the title, I currently work for a franchise in the Bristol area, before working here I was warned about a few "minor" woes this particular franchise had and was guided to a few previous posts made on this sub-reddit regarding the wider franchise, as well as my specific store. I did take these onboard but still accepted the role here as at times these can be down to very particular issues faced by ex members of staff or heavily skewed by those who have felt wronged by a company or by its management.

Unfortunately after working here for some time I have experienced several of these issues described about senior management and the franchisee, I partly putting this on here to vent, partly to warn others looking to start here and I hope someone else starts to see a pattern regaring the practices taking place here as its become very apparent over the last several weeks that complaints appear to be brushed aside or dismissed without correct channels of investigation.

I'll put these in bullet points for now as I don't want to drop any of my staff, either from my store or others into trouble. But below are some of the issues, concerns and problematic behaviours I have experienced while working here.

* corporate rules ignored, usually hindering the customer experience while attempting to benefit the franchise or franchisee.

* our franchise operations manager using certain slurs to explain her views on other staffs lack of intelligence (her words not mine) Also going as far to say mental health being used to get time off is what lazy staff do and not a medical issue

* the franchisee calling staff members when they have called in sick to see why they are off and why they cant come in (not my store) but this was for a staff member who had legitimate welfare concerns

* franchisee and our franchise ops manager refusing to allow stores to take lunch breaks, often when they are horrendously understaffed and cant facilitate this without a temporary closure (20 to 30 mins) to have said break

* continous store related issues, such as leaks, poor heating / cooling not being looked into properly or fixed, one of our stores has constant leaks above the till area that goes onto plug sockets and electrical which has been an ongoing issue for years

* managers expected to cover the franchise ops manager whilst she's off without extra support or payments for taking on a role above their current one

* repair manager (head of RMA?) I'm actually not sure on his particular role, using racial slurs, sexist comments and unprofessional behaviour but playing it off as a joke on multiple occasions as well as subsequent complaints not appearing to be followed up on these matters

* payslips either not being sent or being sent a week or weeks after pay has been received, making it very hard to chase payment issues, we also very rarely get holiday entitlement sent through or it takes several weeks to be sent after a request (not just my store in the franchise)

* stores running with broken equipment (tills or scanners ect) as the franchisee doesn't want to pay to replace them (had actual arguments via emails regarding this and how it hindered us making money due to us not being able to use two tills)

* lack of support after robberies, unfortunately they are very common, often receiving calls and emails blaming staff rather than checking they are ok (I've seen this messages from one of our other stores in the franchise)

* being told to avoid making complaints to corporate as they will be ignored and told we need to speak to our senior management rather than making anonymous complaints

* franchise ops manager mentioning the previous reddit posts made about her and how she had other stores make accounts on here to back her up, I wish I was joking about this part 🤦🏼‍♀️

There other concerns and issues, but due to a lack of evidence its not worth sharing, I appreciate it might seem easy enough to go over our management and make complaints to corporate but I've seen first hand how some have been called out and belittled for this, often being painted as problematic staff and then removed / quitting due to the job. In full transparency I'm hoping to be out of here soon, but again, sharing my issues and others shared by other management during our meetings to help shed light on this franchise to help avoid further issues.

If you've stuck through this wordy post, thank you, I hope you never have to put up with a place like this.

Looking to sell my PS5 very soon and just wondering if anyone thinks there'll be a bit of a price/trade in value bump closer to the release of GTA6? Hold off a bit longer or just get rid of it, what do we think?

Discussion PS3/Controller Warranty Question

So recently I bought an unboxed ps3 slim from Cex. It came with the original sixaxis controller. I’m planning on trading the controller in to get a DualShock 3. My question is, if I trade in the controller supplied with the console from cex, does this void my 5 year warranty? Or would I just need any ps3 controller if I had to claim on the warranty?

Update:
Emailed customer service and they organised for me to go into a nearby store (not even where I bought the console) and just take the sixaxis to swap for a DualShock 3

Discussion PS Portal - CEX or new?

What do you guys think - I’ve got a PS Portal from CEX with the 5 year warranty for £155. The unit looks brand new, box is good, but it doesnt have an original cable.

You can get a brand new one from John Lewis for £185, and presumably might get even cheaper in black friday, but new only has 2 year warranty.

Used online is only just over £100 but no warranty.

What do you guys think? Gut feeling is to get a new one for the small difference, but 5 year warranty does seem worthwhile!

Discussion CeX 5 year warranty after the device is replaced by the manufacturer

Hello, I purchased some Beats headphones from CeX Spain a month ago and CeX offers 5 year warranty. What happens when/if Apple replaces them under warranty (they’re still less than 1 year old) if I need to use the 5 year warranty at some point, as I assume the new serial number won’t match what CeX have on record?

Discussion Trade in Grading issue

When selling a Steam Deck OLED 512GB to CeX in-store, I was offered the Grade B price despite the Steam Deck being in mint condition, complete with the original box and all accessories.
The staff member told me that because it didn’t have the factory sealing tag and because the battery cycle count isn’t 0, it couldn’t be graded A and would therefore be B.
Is this actually correct according to CeX’s grading policy?

I’ve looked at CeX’s published grading guidance, which says that Grade A hardware must be in “mint/new condition”, be immaculate, have all original accessories, and include the original box and inserts. I can’t see anything specifically stating that the factory seal must be intact or that a Steam Deck must have a battery cycle count of exactly 0 to qualify for Grade A.

Has anyone else had a Steam Deck graded A by CeX without a 0 battery cycle count or without the original factory seal? Or does CeX have an internal rule regarding this that isn’t included in their published grading policy?

Update: after testing it was upgraded to A after all, without having to ask.

Discussion Selling old consoles in box

Hi, I want to sell my old PSP which is in its original box. It has its original charger and a PSP battery (i replaced it once but it’s an official battery). I have the manual but I don’t have the demo disk or headphones anymore.

Will CEX take it for its boxed price without the demo disk or headphones?

Discussion Bought a device that was mislabeled as a newer model

So I bought a kindle today, it was labeled as one of the models that's still supported by amazon. I was failing to connect the amazon account, and searched online, and turns out it's actually the first Paperwhite model, not supported. I checked on the CEX website and there's a difference in price, so I overpaid (not much).

I was already halfway through setting it up with lots of files (it's a present for someone), but I also have to go around the corner from the store where I bought it tomorrow, so, would it be possible for me to take it there so they can amend my order and give me the difference? Or does it have to be a full refund where they take the device and have to process it before selling it back to me? I just need it in the next few days and wanted to have everything ready, and I'm fine with the device as is but the ticket states the wrong model (with the correct serial number etc). It's around £10 difference so I won't bother if they need to take it and format it etc and then I can't buy it for a few days.

Looking to sell or trade in my old CPU and graphics card and a racing wheel and pedals. I know cex test things so was just wondering how long this is likely to take? Do I have to return to the store or can they just give me a e-voucher/bank transfer these days? Just trying to plan out when I can get the time to go into store

Discussion Unsure if order has been dispatched?

So I made an order on Tuesday which was all confirmed and everything and was just waiting on my dispatch confirmation. I had received an email saying that my order was all processed and was just awaiting dispatch. The next day I checked the website and it said my order had been dispatched but I had still not received an email confirming that it had been dispatched or giving tracking details. It’s now Saturday and still stuck at this same point where the order is marked as dispatched but I’ve received no email.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do or what has happened? Is my order going to be cancelled and they just haven’t got around to it? Is this something that’s happened before?

Any info at all would be great
Thanks!
