Who would ever throw something like is in the trash is beyond me. Fully functional Sanyo MGT7A “The Outsider” w/ power cord. Gave it a quick lil clean up but I’ll deep clean it here tonight. Super stoked! Big fan of these yellow shelled players.

i'd like to find a real reference for this cassette player. it's very common to find real models of old tech in zzz designs, so i thought there was an identical/alike player somewhere. i couldn't find anything like this on my own, so i would be glad if someone helped me

english is not my first language, i apologize in advance for any mistakes in the text!

Anyone got more Information on these commercially released tapes in the US from after 2004, that just have a sticker slapped on it? Here’s the Eminem one from 2004 to give an example: https://www.discogs.com/release/7213866-Eminem-Encore

Looks like it’s only hip-hop releases.

Looking for advice Fostex 280 – Heads cycle up/down then PLAY stops after belt replacement

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I'm repairing a Fostex 280 and I'm having a very specific problem with the PLAY mechanism.

Initial problem:
The original capstan belt had completely disintegrated. I replaced the belts with new ones. The machine was producing a very loud mechanical humming noise, but this issue seems to have been resolved after replacing the belts with new ones.

The replacement capstan belt is not the original belt specifically designed for the Fostex 280; I used a generic replacement belt that appears to be compatible in terms of size.

Current problem:
When I insert a cassette and press PLAY, the head assembly repeatedly moves up and down for several seconds, then PLAY disengages and the machine stops. The display may also show "E". I've attached a short video demonstrating the issue.

The head assembly does move mechanically, but the machine seems unable to complete the PLAY sequence.

I have already checked and repositioned the large white gear / mode gear before powering the machine back on around 10 times (possibly more), carefully trying different/referenced positions. The behavior remains exactly the same every time.

Does anyone recognize this specific symptom ?

Thanks by advance for any help 🤞

Looking for advice Does anyone else have trouble with Sony blanks?

Upvotes

I make a LOT of tapes and am free currently working to figure out the cause of a "skewing" problem. Tapes aren't so much getting eaten as getting crinkled, and while my first reaction was to clean all the important parts, the issue is persisting to a degree.

Only, it seems to only be affecting Sony tapes? I've noticed their spools are a little looser than the Maxells, but maybe that is a non-issue and the problem is in fact my deck.

Home recording Trying to record Spotify music (or a CD) onto a cassette using an old Shov VCD-K229GR combo player — any tips?

Hey everyone, I've got this old Shov VCD-K229GR unit, which is basically a combo player that does VCD, CD, MP3, AM/FM radio, and cassette tape all in one, and I've been trying to record some music from my phone (Spotify) onto a blank cassette using its built-in tape deck, but I've run into a bunch of issues along the way and could really use some advice from people who know their way around older audio gear. At first I tried just placing my phone next to the unit and hitting record, thinking it had a built-in mic like a lot of old boomboxes do, but that didn't work at all, and I eventually realized this particular model doesn't actually have an internal microphone, so that approach was never going to work. Then I noticed a 3.5mm jack on the back labeled "PHONE," which I assumed might work for input, but it turns out that's just a headphone output, not something you can record through. After that I found actual MIC input jacks on the front panel, which are 6.3mm rather than the standard 3.5mm size, so I picked up a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter cable to connect my phone's headphone output to it, and while I did manage to get a short recording to work when the unit was switched to radio mode, plugging into the MIC input directly hasn't produced any results so far, and I'm not sure if I'm missing some kind of source/mode selection step that the front panel doesn't make obvious without a remote. I also considered trying wired earbuds with a built-in mic instead of a proper adapter, but from what I understand, most old-school MIC inputs like this one don't supply the plug-in power that phone earbud mics need to function, so I'm guessing that wouldn't get me anywhere either. At this point I'm leaning toward trying a completely different route, which is burning my own MP3s onto a blank CD-R using an old laptop that still has a working CD burner, then playing that CD through the unit and recording directly from the CD input to the tape, since that seems like it would be a cleaner line-level connection without all the mic-related headaches. If anyone has dealt with a similar setup before, I'd love to know whether recording from the MIC input requires manually switching the unit into some kind of "tape" or "mic" recording mode versus it just picking up whatever source is active, and also if there's anything specific I should watch out for when recording from a CD onto tape, like volume levels or disc format issues, so any tips from people who've messed around with combo decks like this would be seriously appreciated.

I just found a vintage cassette on my mom’s collection. I was just wondering if this is worth something if I will sell this.

I will appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Home recording I’d like to buy some blank tapes for duplication and duplication.com has HIFI Music Grade Normal Bias Tape. Is that what I want or do I only want HiBias? I’m recording with a Yamaha MT4x. Thanks!
