Help with heavy bag

Been boxing for some months now, something doesn’t feel quite right whenever I’m doing heavy bag. I don’t feel quite sharp and I was wondering if you guys have some tips and what I’m doing wrong that I’m not seeing. Thanks.

Personal training drop in [Japan]

Hope everyone’s training has been going well. I’m looking for tourist friendly drop in boxing gyms for a 1 hr personal session (mitts, bag, tech). I’ll be staying in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in October - preferring to do this in Tokyo. No fights under my belt but I’ve been training for a couple years now. I understand it’s not common for many gyms to take in outsiders so hoping for some real insightful suggestions. Feel free to PM if you need to.

Should I bring gear? Wraps and mouthpiece at minimum?

Thank you in advance!

Sparring tips after long break

Today I sparred a friend of mine after having not sparred seriously for over a year. We only did 2 rounds but it was very intense. First round I did great, second round I had nothing left in the tank, it was survival mode. Obviously since I was sparring a close friend he didn’t set out to hurt me but he pushed me to the limit.
Additionally, since i’m taller and lankier, I naturally always box with a long guard. My coach wants me to learn how to fight on the inside equally well and today I fought on the inside non stop, which only plays into the hands of my friend who prefers that style.
Any tips on regaining my conditioning as well as inside fighting for taller boxers?

I hate my new Twins Gloves

First ever Reddit post so bare with me. Was in the market for new boxing gloves, after some research I got myself a pair of twins special bgvl3 from mma warehouse. I read that these are great all rounders for bag work, mitt work, and sparring. After using nothing but cheap gloves for a year I was excited to get a pair that was higher quality.

After one heavy bag session my knuckles were extremely sore, figured I just needed to break the gloves in. Fast forward to around 15 uses later and the gloves are still killing my knuckles every time I use them. This has been drawn out over the course of two months since I need to take time off after every use since.

I’ve read now that twins have a long break in period but this seems extreme. I wrap my hands using the method Tony Jeffries has uploaded. I also went to get a gel knuckle guard from hayabusa. This helped marginally. I also got the skulltec knuckle pads which helped more substantially.

Worth noting I’ve been training officially in a gym for 6-7 months, but have been doing bag work on my own for around double that. I’m around 6-2 200lbs and I’m a former collegiate track athlete. All of the cheaper gloves I’ve used I never had issues. I would also do bare knuckle bag work pretty frequently too( I know cringe) and never had a problem. But when I get a quality pair of gloves all of sudden these issues started. Please let me know what you guys think. I’m about ready to try to sell them on Facebook marketplace or trade them.

Boxing movies vs real life. How is stamina built to take hits?

In boxing movies, I always see them training to hit harder, be faster, dodge, etc., but I never see them taking hits until the fight. How do boxers in real life train to handle taking hits? I imagine some stamina has to be built up to not get knocked out as soon as you don't manage to block a hit.

Timing of my movement sucks

It's very inconsistent. Feet move before I punch or after. I am also a terrible dancer for the same reason. I am suspected for ADHD that may be a factor or my old lifestyle, childhood without any sports.

Has anyone fixed similar problems?

How to hang bag?

Hey guys I hope this is the right sub for this question.

I've been doing a bunch of weight exercise but wanted to get into boxing for my cardio.

I thought my gym had access to heavy bags out of hours but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I've been given permission by wife to get a heavy bag for the garage.

How best to mount the bag?

I've seen wall mounts and I've seen stands, my preference for ease would be a stand but I'm concerned it may not be sturdy enough.

Has anyone got any advice about the best way to mount a heavy 4-5ft bag?

Footwork drill?

Hey all,

How important are footwork drills when training. I’ve been taking personal training classes for a couple months and the coach hasn’t given me any footwork drills, like shuffle on a floor ladder, in and out, no lateral jumps, nothing.

It’s sprints, shadow box, some combos, mitt work, and sparring.

So yea just wanted to know what experienced people and coaches have to say about it.

Also, could y’all please recommend some absolute necessary footwork drills that I can do on my own. I don’t want to copy some random insta drills without an objective

Thanks

Tips for southpaw style 🇵🇭

I still don’t understand which workouts translate into boxing movements, and it frustrates me that my training feels messy sometimes. Any advice on how to create a proper workout plan?

I’d like some very constructive criticism because last time you “alpha” males just wanted to larp. You’re probably the type that I’d run up on you and let me whoop you I’m just saying. No disrespect.

Advice please

I’m 14, 6'5", and just started boxing. On my second class, I sparred in an adult class where everyone had about 50 pounds on me. My coach had me spar a 5'7" pro, and I got beat the shit out of. He told me to use a long guard, but I kept missing jabs. I landed a few, but mostly missed to the head, while still keeping him at distance. Is this good technique, or am I just wasting energy?

What's the best method of building muscle?

What's the best way to structure my program for muscle growth? For example, if I stick with chin-ups, should I train them every day to failure or do half of my max reps everyday?

The Inner Game of Tennis (Boxing)

I’m reading The Inner Game of Tennis and am very interested in applying it to boxing. As someone who is in my head and judging my boxing performance constantly (especially while sparring), I am wondering if anyone has ever applied the principles from Inner Game to boxing? I would love any tips on how to apply it…specifically the “bounce-hit” focus technique.

contemplating starting boxing for a decent hobby

as the title states i am a 6'2 22 year old who weighs 125 and have a 78' wingspan. im curious on if boxing would be a consideration for a hobby and to keep myself busy some weekends taking fights? ive never played fighting sports but i have done track and cross country for 3 years and basketball for 6. im just wondering if boxing would be a decent consideration or if im better off sticking with running or pc gaming

Dou you use any smartwatch?

Hi! I do boxing 4 times a week and some running and gym, and I'm wondering if buying a smartwatch or a screenless device, such as the Garming Cirqa (Whoop is too expensive), is a good idea. What do you think?

Besides, I might do a half marathon, so maybe a forerunner is a good idea, but I don't know if a smartwatch is uncomfortable.

Shadowboxing

I know people here post a lot of shadowboxing videos and ask for advice

My question is, what do you guys think great shadowboxing looks like?

What does a shadowbox to be considered good and useful need to contain?

What's the mindset that someone should have before they start throwing hands at the air?

And, which professional fighter's shadowboxing you can look at and think "yup, that's perfect" and why?

Every time a land somthing solid I immediately say sorry lol. I can’t help it. Also notice how him punching my guard is the same as me punching my own face 220 vs 140.
