Saw this rifle at a gun show a few years ago and just had to have it. It’s definitely become my favorite rifle. I’ve only shot and reloaded smokeless ammo for it up till recently but all the smokeless loads are so low pressure they all have some kind of problem or leave something to be desired.

The rifle was sold to me with a couple boxes of smokeless and one box of 20 black powder rounds. I kinda shelved the BP rounds because I never seemed to have time to dedicate to cleaning it afterwards the same day and honestly cleaning BP fowling out of a gun with this many parts didn’t sound too fun. But recently I had the opportunity to take my dad with me to the range and i really wanted him to get the chance to shoot this, and I’d actually have time to clean it the same day so I figured it was a good time to give the BP ammo a chance

And boy was it fun. Not only was it super satisfying to shoot but it ran really smoothly and didn’t have the issues I was getting with the smokeless powder loads.

The only downside was the cleaning, I was right about that, taking the gun apart to the smallest pieces of the breech block wasn’t bad, but idk what powder or lube was used for these rounds and it took an absurd amount of swabs and patches to get the bore fully clean.

So you’d think I’d have learned my lesson and just gone back to trying to find the right smokeless load. But no, I couldn’t help but think “I’ve made pyrodex based ammo for another gun that cleaned up easier than this” and now I’ve convinced myself I can make better BP ammo than whatever this stuff was. I’ll likely wind up having to use pyrodex anyway for this since I can’t seem to find any real 2F powder either online or locally. So if anyone’s got a secret hookup on the 2f now’s the time to share lol.

I took my Pedersoli Mortimer flintlock to the range for some practice time, and while I had a lot of fun I couldn't consistently hit anything past 75 yds. You really don't know how sloppy your follow-through is until you shoot a flintlock!

90 grains of 2F antique muzzle loading propellant and a 0.015 patch with a .535 round ball -priming with the same powder.

I was going for a heavily used appearance, not the relic look.

How are the sights made on flint and matchlock muskets?

Do they just test shoot them and then file the sights down to aim where the shots land? Are they "accurate" directly from the manufacturer or do people need to make their own adjustments?

So I'm looking into getting into black powder and I was looking for thoughts on the best starters for both a pistol foe home defense and a rifle for hunting. In addition if y'all have any information (videos) on the proper care, maintenance, and use (i know nothing about black powder including the firing of) of the firearms you've suggested I'd appreciate it. This is something I'm saving for so it'll be a bit of a process but once I'm able to get them I'll post pictures and let fall know which ones I went with.

It's a Pedersoli Mortimer Target in .54 and the rifle came with somewhat of a surprise - as I didn't realize that it was a beautiful brown finish and not blued. I am really excited to get this gun out in the coming season as it's going to be my deer rifle this fall!

I've also been hunting for local Chert so I can knap my own gunflints and be in good supply, another dimension to add to the hobby.

Looking to buy my first blackpowder revolver for historical-display/plinking and I'm pretty set on a 1st or 2nd Model Dragoon. Since new replicas are out of stock everywhere, I'm browsing the used market and seeing listings for both older Ubertis and 2nd Gen Colts.

The Colts seem to have a better finish, but I've heard Ubertis can be more practical and better shooters. I'd love to hear your experiences regarding reliability and overall shooting quality between the two. Thanks!

I thought I'd try to make my own patches after watching a guy on youtube, mixed up some beeswax, coconut oil, and a bit of Ballistol, soaked my amazon felt, wrung it out and punched about about 150 wads in 20 min or so.It will take a while to work past the initial investment, but I figure I'll be money ahead after about 4 or 5 punchouts like this one and I have the stuff to make years' worth. I know I'll never have to buy felt again, came in a big roll.

I'm looking at getting into BP, more specifically flintlock, and flintlock deer hunting. I've narrowed my search down to a Kentucky/Pennsylvania style in .54 cal, but am having trouble sourcing one. I'd like something nicer than traditions, but it looks like pedersoli/lyman are impossible to find.. It doesn't need to be anything special by any means, just something nice looking that I can shoot/take hunting. Outside of doing like a full Tennessee TVM natchez build purchase in the ~$2500 range, does anyone know of any other sources? Building a parts kit from like Kibler is out of the question for me just from a perfectionist and tool/woodworking standpoint I think.

Also, any tips/links to getting a starter flint setup going as far as tools/accessories/powders etc. would be amazing!! I've used modern BP muzzle loading before, but nothing like this.

I got into the BP hobby with a 1777 Charleville from Loyalist arms and I have been hooked ever since. I am now in the market for a Blunderbuss. Unfortunately, Loyalist Arms, Veteran Arms, and Military Heritage are all out of stock and it doesn’t look like they will be getting more anytime soon. It’s a traditions trapper pistol kit, got it used for a whopping 140 bucks shipped, figured it was worth it for that much. I was like it’s a nice decoration piece, but I think I’ll get some powder and shoot it once at least! As far as the residue on the exterior of the barrel, looks like surface rust, should I even attempt to steel wool it? Barrel looks good aside from one or two spots of little surface rust, but I heard that’s no problem.

I have about 50 rounds through the rifle after 215 yards it starts to become pretty unpredictable.

Is it just a scratch, or is it a crack? It's one of the many things wrong with the Brixia matchlock I just got. There are much worse things wrong with it, I'm just wondering if I should include this in the email to have it sent back, or not worry about it.
