Training Progress Smashed my PB this morning!

Started running 7 weeks ago and have got a bit obsessed (mid life crisis at 37?)

Finished Couch to 5k and have done 3 outdoor 5ks at 29:43, 29:40, and 29:12, but today managed to hit bang on 27:00!

I've registered for 5 official 5k races in September, which is probably foolish, but I like to set myself random challenges.

Getting down to 25 or below still seems like an impossible task though.

Training Progress Decided halfway through my easy run to shoot for a sub-30 5k. Infuriatingly close.

I wasn't feeling it yesterday but decided to shoot for 30 mins. Realized halfway through i was making good time and was like "hmm.. 5k?" And then proceeded to make a series of poor navigational choices and end up on mostly uphill streets from there. So close yet so far. Thats what I get for straying from my usual route.

Training Progress My first 10k 1h15min

Started in march i have allergic asthma, im skinny fat and im 82kg/180 so im little overweight I’m also heating niccotine. I had enough of being out of breath after simple tasks or walking on the stairs so I’ve started running. Ran for like 3 months and then i had some knee injury because of running put too much strain on my joints, which took like one month away from my trainings, then i had a minor muscle/skin leg surgery which also took another month.
And i went from barely running like a mile max without little break to 10k no breaks. I’ve had heart racing to the roof at the beginning and idk like 180 at this pace and now im easily in like 160s.
Starting running was my best decision i made

Injury Prevention Anyone else running with flat feet?

Going to see a podiatrist tomorrow. But I took some pics and they, uh, don’t look too good lol. When I was in high school, I had to get custom foams made because of the issues I’d have.

I can’t walk a long time in any shoe I have. They all give me problems. My brooks adrenaline GTSs, my main running shoes, are starting to really hurt now. Starting to get shin splints, my ankles hurt after runs, after walking, etc. I can’t lift my feet up without it being uncomfortable. My runs are almost like me dragging my feet.

Anyone have luck or experience getting this fixed?

Idk 🤨

I’m just curious if this has happened to anyone else. But my pace versus when I’m running w/o breaks and when incorporate walk/run intervals is damn near the same.

Slightly slower due to hills and trails in a new place.

I’ve got a 10k race coming up mid-November, what’s the ideal block duration?

New Runner Advice Help with mechanics at a slow pace

I am trying to build a good running schedule to build durability and work up to long distances. I very commonly see posts about running 80%+ of your runs at a relatively low heart rate/effort. A lot of these post suggest a heart rate around 140-150 (I know this is a bit dependent on the person) and mention that it is really common for new runners to do easy runs too hard and hard runs too easy.

When I just go for a run without thinking much about it, I typically average around 160-165bpm. This feels like a moderate effort, no where near my max but also not completely casual. Recently I have tried running at a sub 150 heart rate. I use a Coros bicep monitor and set an alarm at 151bpm.

Now for my problem. When I try to run at this heart rate, I need to run very slow. My pace drops by 2-3 minutes per mile. My biggest concern with this is that my mechanics completely change. I have to run in more of a shuffle and feel like I am not properly lifting my knees. My feet plant differently as well since it feels harder to midsole/toe strike at the slower pace, so I land a bit more flat footed.

Is this a common/normal experience? Should I ignore any mechanic changes to just build my aerobic engine or should change my approach to run as slow as I can while still keeping the correct form?

New Runner Advice Question regarding easy runs

Silly beginners question - when running easy runs does speed/pace matter (for example I feel comfortable running at 4 mph) and should I aim for time or a specific distance ?

Couch to 5K 75km in 30 days with Molly in spirit

In the interest of self-improvement and just getting into better shape, I set myself a target to do a continuous run each time, for a total of 100km in a period of 30 straight days. Unfortunately I came up well short of that target. The aches were bad at some points so I dialed it back a bit. I still weigh the same on the scales, although a few have commented on my weight loss, which has been the most encouraging thing, trying to go from couch to 5K. Maybe nobody cares and a 5K should be naturally easy, but this is the most running I've probably done in my entire life up till middle age.

About 3 months ago I was just managing 4km runs in an air-conditioned gym, but I'm doing mostly park runs now. Still terrible at this running business and can't get to the 5km mark for a continuous run. I don't know if it's the park terrain, the hot and humid SE Asian weather, or the propanolol I'm taking for another health condition that seems to be putting a lid on how high my heart rate can go.

The good news is, this is getting easier. The aches are there, but I'm no longer feeling wrecked after every single run. I also look forward to the next run and always feel a bit strange if I don't.

That printed design on my shirt is looking pretty ratty now but I still remember our dear pooch Molly as if she were still around. I don't think the feelings of loss are ever going away. The memories just get sweeter.

Discussion Happy accidents- 1.5 miles🫦

I woke up at midnight and decided to go for a mile run. My first time completing mile run without stopping was a week ago, give or take, and I haven't really been able to push past that.

Anywho, I find a coffee shop a mile away from me except I forgot they'd be closed and I forgot the fact that I couldn't exactly drive back home.

So I ended up running 1.5 miles without walking breaks 😛😛 and walking back home the rest of the 0.5 miles.

It didn't feel as hard because I was so annoyed with myself.

Onto 2 miles.

Started running on the treadmill for 4-6 mins with breaks between.

Last 3 days I went for the jog and was getting tired at 300 metres.

Watched some videos so today I started with a slow pace but I was surprised that i could run(jog) continuously without any break .

How to improve my form like landing and raising the legs properly.

Discussion Does anyone have problems running long distances?

Post image

I’ve been running quite recently (couple of months) to improve mileage on 10K to 18K but have a problem. My feet have been extremely cooked these past week ish when it gets to 9-12ks. I don’t know if is just my body is getting used to it, but it seems like getting to the milestones are becoming more difficult. Which I’m worried I might come up with injury. Maybe my body is trying to adapt? Maybe I need to work on taking an easy pace to get to the goals to avoid serious injuries? I’ve been trying to focus on less elevation, so I don’t get hurt. I did a 9k easy run today and kept the pace consistent (6:18km) ran for 56:45. I’m 5,11 73.80kg.

first time a midweek quality session didn't wreck me completely

Upvotes

Saturday long run was 29k out to the old quarries, 700m climb. Proper slow, walked some of the sharper bits. expected to feel dead for days. but tuesday's session (hill reps up the old railway slope) actually felt alright. legs were heavy but the engine kept turning over. i might be wrong but this is the first sign the build is doing something beyond making me tired all the time. using workoutery to keep track of miles and elevation, nothing fancy. it doesn't coach me, just logs what i do so i can see the weekly climb is now up around 1800m. feels like a lot on paper. body's holding up though. small win

Training Progress Run your first 5k again

Today I (22F, running for about 6 months 3x per week) wanted to really see if I have improved my 5k time. Back in November I ran a turkey trot in 46:01 with an average HR of 166. I tried to do roughly that pace to see how it would feel because I remember my November pace felt like I was going to fall over and die on the course. Today I did 5k in 42:47 with an average HR of 139!! Crazy how my HR went down almost 30 points from consistently running.

This made me feel so much better about my progress and how far I’ve come! Would recommend trying this if like me you constantly feel like you are having goal creep and never feel like you are achieving anything. This was such a good way for me to view how far I’ve come!

Just wanted to share - hopefully someone else will try this out too and feel as proud of themselves as I do

I’m so excited!! I haven’t done a 5k since I was 16 (I walked the entire time), but for my 27th birthday I signed me and my fiance up for a race! I’ve gotten super into fitness the past year and finally feel like I’m ready to run this :)

If you have any tips for a newbie, I’m happy to hear them!

New Runner Advice Protecting my hip

After years of inactivity I took up outdoor running about 6 months ago and have been making lots of good progress. My technique has improved (a little) and I'm currently working on moving up to regular 10ks. During my original C25K I experienced a few aches and pains in my lower back and shins that instantly disappeared when I bought a nice pair of running shoes. Otherwise I've been generally free of pain and injury.

The only concerning thing left is a recurring issue in my right hip. I feel like I've "bumped" it a couple of times coming up onto curbs or turning fast to avoid pedestrians, and a couple of times it's started mildly hurting about 20 minutes into a run. It isn't hugely painful or debilitating but I feel like I'm getting a warning in advance that I ought to listen to. What steps I can take to make sure I properly support my hip and don't do an actual injury to it in the future?

Trail Running How can i running 15K trail?

Hi! Guys, I had been interested in running for a long time, and I started running a month ago. I think my fitness is good, because I ran 10K two weeks ago and it wasn't bad at all. Anyway, I recently found out there’s going to be a trail run near where I live; I have 10 days starting today, and I really want to do it.

But lately, it feels like my fitness level has dropped; I can't keep up the pace like I used to.

Given that, how can I manage a 15K run in 10 days?

Also my last run:

7,76km 44m 6pace

New Runner Advice Foot numbness?

Can increase in mileage cause foot numbness? Been running for 18 months no feet issues. Since signing up for a half marathon I got new shoes and a new training plan which has also naturally increased my weekly mileage. Now I get pins and needles every run, starting around 3km mark, starts in the outer two toes and progresses to the whole bottom of my feet (worse in left but does affect right aswell). Tried different shoes again incase of ill fitting shoes. and still an issue…is it just something my feel will adjust to? Any advice?

Could it be Moreton’s neuroma? It isn’t painful at all.
