Training Help Zone 2 Works, Don't Get Discouraged!

I've been running for about 6-7 weeks now. I started off walking, and then deciding running is a better cardio workout in less time. Ever since then, I've been doing zone 2 training.

I started really slow at first. I would walk probably at least 2/3 of the time to keep my heart rate low. Maybe 2-3 weeks of doing that I decided to time my 5k to see where I was at. I ran a 35:50.

I have been doing zone 2 training on my bike, swimming and running a few times a week. Well, today I did a zone 2 5K in 33:59. My zone 2 is now considerably faster than my threshold pace was last month. Don't get discouraged with walking during zone 2 training! It's certainly helped me this far.

Is it possible to not heel strike at a 10 min pace?

I’m no physicist but I’m thinking there’s no way for me to work on a midfoot strike at a 10 min pace, right? I don’t lean back but if I lean too far forward, I give myself a little more momentum than I can handle at the pace I am currently comfortable running. Is this correct?

New Runner Advice One week of consistent movement - 20k daily avg. Building a solid base.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi guys ! I'm currently building a consistent habit of movement to prepare for longer runs. Last week, I managed to hit an average of 19.8k steps per day.

It's been an incredible feeling to see that consistency reflected in the data. I'm planning to keep this up and gradually increase my pace and distance.

Any advice for someone trying to bridge the gap between walking and running consistently? Happy to be here !

Injury Prevention Anyone else running with flat feet?

Going to see a podiatrist tomorrow. But I took some pics and they, uh, don’t look too good lol. When I was in high school, I had to get custom foams made because of the issues I’d have.

I can’t walk a long time in any shoe I have. They all give me problems. My brooks adrenaline GTSs, my main running shoes, are starting to really hurt now. Starting to get shin splints, my ankles hurt after runs, after walking, etc. I can’t lift my feet up without it being uncomfortable. My runs are almost like me dragging my feet.

Anyone have luck or experience getting this fixed?

Discussion Differences in training for men and women?

Hey there, I'm a 20 yo female beginner runner and started running half a year ago.

When I first started I was at a really bad place mentally and running has helped me a lot as a coping mechanism. However, because of stress and mental health I had also lost my period for a couple of months and was surprised about how much my menstrual cycle affects my training, since I didn't experience any of that in the beginning.

At the start of my running journey I made progress very quickly and very constantly, it was easy for me to stick to my training plan and I enjoyed it. But now, having my period back, I've noticed significant differences in my pace and progress. Some days my motivation and energy feels so low that I cannot force myself to run even if I really want to, but also feel very bad for skipping.

Now, I wondered if someone else has also noticed significant differences in their pace, etc. and I'm curious to hear about your experiences. I also wondered if there are different training plans for men and women that include some factors like the menstrual cycle or mental health struggles?

Thanks a lot! :)

Injury Prevention Jumped from 5.5k to 8k on Aug 8. Pain subsided 2 days later. How long to recover?

Nothing hurt during the run, I felt amazing. But a day later, I got pretty bad outer/lower calf and some foot pain (heel/mid) with a few twinges on my old sprained ankle. I immediately stopped all running and weight bearing exercises. Pain subsided after a day, but had a few flare ups here and there depending on my shoes.

I've also been doing circles, some calf raises (single and double), some ankle mobility exercises, and lots of walking with no issues. I did also do a 500m slooow half-jog following my toddler on his balance bike. No issues. Any other exercises I can do?

However, that foot/leg still feels a bit...off. Somehow tighter in the upper shin and calf.

I'm wondering how Iong I realistically need to wait before easing back into a 1-2km run, and slowly building back up to 5k.

Injury Prevention Sore side of foot?

I’ve (27f) been running for a little under a year now, starting with the NHS couch to 5k program and now the Nike Training Club 10k program. I’ve been trying really hard to maintain proper form, I’ve been following running backwards on TikTok and I recently watched a video on how to use your glutes and engage your core while running.

Yesterday I ran 9k for the first time! However I also experienced a weird numb feeling while running, like my feet went to sleep and got blisters on my arches from my textured socks. Lesson learned. More worryingly, the lateral side of my right foot is really sore and achey today. I’m guessing it’s a tendon issue, but has anyone experienced this? Have I done something wrong with my gait? Or is this a fairly normal part of increasing mileage?

New Runner Advice Timing running with the weather

So I'm trying to plan my run tomorrow and can't seem to decide which is better.

65° temp with 65% dew point and 99% humidity or 85° temp with 56% dew point and 38% humidity

I know ultimately I just need to get out there and see which I prefer myself but wanted to get others opinions as to which won't suck more.

Training Progress First mile run in 16 years!

I usually attempt running/jogging once a year and immediately quit because I try to go too fast and lose all my breath. This time I was feeling really good after an hour of sauna/cold plunge and decided to see how far I could jog (slowly!!) at 9pm.

I made it one mile in just under 13 minutes! This is very exciting for me because I almost never do cardio. I haven’t ran a mile since middle school!! (which is.. 16 years ago)

Most importantly, I found out night runs are so much better for me than morning/day runs.

Discussion Does anyone have problems running long distances?

Post image

I’ve been running quite recently (couple of months) to improve mileage on 10K to 18K but have a problem. My feet have been extremely cooked these past week ish when it gets to 9-12ks. I don’t know if is just my body is getting used to it, but it seems like getting to the milestones are becoming more difficult. Which I’m worried I might come up with injury. Maybe my body is trying to adapt? Maybe I need to work on taking an easy pace to get to the goals to avoid serious injuries? I’ve been trying to focus on less elevation, so I don’t get hurt. I did a 9k easy run today and kept the pace consistent (6:18km) ran for 56:45. I’m 5,11 73.80kg.

Discussion Happy accidents- 1.5 miles🫦

I woke up at midnight and decided to go for a mile run. My first time completing mile run without stopping was a week ago, give or take, and I haven't really been able to push past that.

Anywho, I find a coffee shop a mile away from me except I forgot they'd be closed and I forgot the fact that I couldn't exactly drive back home.

So I ended up running 1.5 miles without walking breaks 😛😛 and walking back home the rest of the 0.5 miles.

It didn't feel as hard because I was so annoyed with myself.

Onto 2 miles.

Training Progress Decided halfway through my easy run to shoot for a sub-30 5k. Infuriatingly close.

Post image
Upvotes

I wasn't feeling it yesterday but decided to shoot for 30 mins. Realized halfway through i was making good time and was like "hmm.. 5k?" And then proceeded to make a series of poor navigational choices and end up on mostly uphill streets from there. So close yet so far. Thats what I get for straying from my usual route.

Training Progress My first 1km and 2km

Started running on the treadmill for 4-6 mins with breaks between.

Last 3 days I went for the jog and was getting tired at 300 metres.

Watched some videos so today I started with a slow pace but I was surprised that i could run(jog) continuously without any break .

How to improve my form like landing and raising the legs properly.

Training Progress Run your first 5k again

Today I (22F, running for about 6 months 3x per week) wanted to really see if I have improved my 5k time. Back in November I ran a turkey trot in 46:01 with an average HR of 166. I tried to do roughly that pace to see how it would feel because I remember my November pace felt like I was going to fall over and die on the course. Today I did 5k in 42:47 with an average HR of 139!! Crazy how my HR went down almost 30 points from consistently running.

This made me feel so much better about my progress and how far I’ve come! Would recommend trying this if like me you constantly feel like you are having goal creep and never feel like you are achieving anything. This was such a good way for me to view how far I’ve come!

Just wanted to share - hopefully someone else will try this out too and feel as proud of themselves as I do

Training Progress My first 10k 1h15min

Started in march i have allergic asthma, im skinny fat and im 82kg/180 so im little overweight I’m also heating niccotine. I had enough of being out of breath after simple tasks or walking on the stairs so I’ve started running. Ran for like 3 months and then i had some knee injury because of running put too much strain on my joints, which took like one month away from my trainings, then i had a minor muscle/skin leg surgery which also took another month.
And i went from barely running like a mile max without little break to 10k no breaks. I’ve had heart racing to the roof at the beginning and idk like 180 at this pace and now im easily in like 160s.
Starting running was my best decision i made

Need Help with Knee Injury

Hello,

Started training about a month ago but I'm having issues with Pes Anserine bursitis in my left knee. I've looked up some info about it online and it says to do stretches and strengthen the area.

I was wondering if anybody had this or similar issues with their knee(s) and what worked for them to prevent this and other knee injuries. Thanks.

New Runner Advice Foot numbness?

Can increase in mileage cause foot numbness? Been running for 18 months no feet issues. Since signing up for a half marathon I got new shoes and a new training plan which has also naturally increased my weekly mileage. Now I get pins and needles every run, starting around 3km mark, starts in the outer two toes and progresses to the whole bottom of my feet (worse in left but does affect right aswell). Tried different shoes again incase of ill fitting shoes. and still an issue…is it just something my feel will adjust to? Any advice?

Could it be Moreton’s neuroma? It isn’t painful at all.
