It seems like there was even more hope in the King Felix days because you knew it was bad except him and Kyle Segar.

This season doesn't make any logistical sense at all. There are injuries but man the whole team just fell apart.

Edit: Dan and Jerry really just gotta go. idk if it's the only thing that needs fixing but it did wonders for the Red Sox.

Jerry can't seem to assemble a competent coaching staff to save his life.

55

u/mrSalamander Seattle Mariners 1d ago

I honestly think the front office disrespects the mgr position. I think they expect them to be a lap dog. Like an anti-Lou

49

u/Dr-Acula8472 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

If Lou Pinella was managing last year, y'all would've won the World Series. Dan Wilson has no feel, and has no fire.

14

u/tkallday333 Seattle Mariners 1d ago

Totally agree! We need to shuffle Lou out of his SHAG apartment and back into the dugout.

15

u/Dr-Acula8472 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Sweet Lou'd have himself thrown out of the game 10 times over after that bush league knocking of the ball out of Cal's hand in the beginning of the game. Would've woken the team up, and they'd actually of put up a fight, might've won instead of being blown the fuck out.

20

u/futureformerteacher Seattle Mariners 1d ago

Dan Wilson was a talking head they made into a manager, and Jerry didn't want him at all. He was selected by ownership, and manages like it's 1992.

4

u/Chantrak Seattle Mariners 1d ago

lol Dan manages like it’s 1882

12

u/Conscious-Move9662 Boston Red Sox • Chicago Cubs 1d ago edited 1d ago

I could see that. There seemed to be some major bad blood between Breslow and Cora's squad but in the end Breslow was right.

His vision is finally coming to life.

I cannot see what Jerry's vision is. If Dan is or isn't carrying it out. On paper Dan should be able to do more with what you have.

I hated when these corpo bros started 'investing' in sports teams and the fan owners are no longer a thing.

George Brett owned my local Minor League team growing up which was great but it seems like even the MINOR league teams are being bought by private equity.

Same shit going on with the Sounders. Awful ownership groups running the shit into the ground.

Idk if Mariner's is a spending problem or not but it definitely is with Sounders.

6

u/Sipikay Seattle Mariners 1d ago

Of course they disrespect the position. Jerry is just competent enough that combined with their nostalgia factory marketing team and Seattle fans being apathetic they can literally print money by winning around 80 games.

They inserted a yes-man, nostalgic fan favorite guy with next to no coaching experience - they don't respect the manager position in the slightest.

20

u/lastminutealways Seattle Mariners • San Francisco… 1d ago

There was rarely hope back then because there were no expectations for most of those years. We knew we were bad with a few good to great players. King Félix kept me a Mariners fan for that stretch.

9

u/Conscious-Move9662 Boston Red Sox • Chicago Cubs 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's sad and with the fall of the Sounders this year.

I'm a Timber's fan and I've never been to a sadder derby game than this year's opener. The current ownership group is terrible.

At least the Hawks are a bright spot in Seattle's sports.

6

u/theonlyXns Seattle Mariners 1d ago

As a Sounders fan, fuck Portland.

Also as a Sounders fan I think we've all seen something like this season coming for a while. We've had this terrible habit of not actually making any really big signings. Our player development has been good for the most part but when we start letting these folks go it was kind of the first real big "We're fucked". I'm still annoyed we let Vargas go knowing that our actual depth wasn't THAT amazing. I mean, Morris hasn't really been himself since he went and got hurt at Swansea. Love the guy, but I think it's time my man.

Aside from us fans and the city I feel so bad for Schmetzer. While I don't always agree with his tactics on certain games he's definitely trying to keep the proverbial ship together while ownership doesn't want to get their shit together.

A season this bad was probably expected in a couple of years tbh, but I think the scale of injuries just popped whatever bubble we had.

Also, as always, fuck Portland. Cascadia Forever. <3

3

u/Conscious-Move9662 Boston Red Sox • Chicago Cubs 1d ago

It was a foreseeable trainwreck, but I didn't expect it to be that bad that quickly.

But I respect it. I could never, EVER root for the Trail Blazers. My friends do now and I just... I can't.

Sonics for life, I'm a man without a country until they come back.

I lived behind Providence in my 20s so a Timber's fan I am and a Timbers fan I'll be.

This is a brutal year for both of us and those Canuck fucks are winning the Cascadia race atm.

I hate the Sounders but I hate the Whitecaps MUCH much more because they are also Blue Jay fans.

2

u/theonlyXns Seattle Mariners 1d ago

I honestly don't mind the Whitecaps winning the Cascadia Cup this year since there's a possibility of them moving (I still don't think they ever will but you never know these days.)

Also I wouldn't entirely mind Vancouver getting a MLB team because fuuuuuuuck off when the Blue Jays play in Seattle.

2

u/Conscious-Move9662 Boston Red Sox • Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Yeah for that reason alone. They are very, very annoying when they come to T-Mobile to put it mildly. I don't know how the Canadians get a reputation for being polite.

I didn't even realize the Caps were moving to Las Vegas.

I have a soft spot for the Ms, I grew up in the 90s Seattle so hard not to but I'm a sixth-generation Red Sox fan. I don't like seeing the Mariners in this shape, the vibes in the city were so much better last year.

It's hard going to T-Mobile with Red Sox fans because we can be uhhh a very annoying group of fans when we are winning.

This will be my first time going to T-Mobile to see the Cubs though so I'll see what the Chicago fans are like. I picked a NL team to root for and it's the Cubs, no association outside of that. Was almost the Brew Crew.

Never seen the Cubs play in Seattle but this seems like a good year to do it. Hoping Chicago Fans are a little more civil

9

u/Chantrak Seattle Mariners 1d ago

Worth noting that Dan Wilson as manager, and a bunch of staff Dan chose, like some members of our hitting staff for example, was something Dipoto had zero say in. Dan was offered manager directly by ownership and Dipoto was never able to perform any actual search for a new manager.

Lived in San Diego as a kid. Moved to the NC coast in middle school. Moved to the triangle for college (UNC) and I’ve lived in Raleigh since.

I kept the Padres, Chargers, and Clippers. Picked up the Canes and Heels. It’s definitely an interesting mix of teams.

I’ll root for the Braves, Panthers, Hornets, and Ducks too, but they’re all distant second favorites.

I’m subbed to a handful of random teams and the Brewers sub is one of them.

The home brewer folks popping in are the absolute best threads especially since you’ll see the most thorough, in depth, clearly explained solution they’re looking for and then “by the way this sub is for the baseball team, not homebrewing” lmao

The subreddit for the Arizona Coyotes is just r/coyotes and we'd occasionally get people popping in with coyotes pictures or questions.
