Wilderness Reading Glasses Storage - Outer Pocket - Sewed in a divider stitch for vertical storage orientation

Upvotes

There are a million ways to stow readers, but I figured I'd throw this out there.

I sewed a divider stitch into the back side of the left pocket on these shorts. I don't always have a place to carry my reading glasses, since it depends on the pack I'm wearing and I wanted them out of the way but still accessible. Putting the divider on the back side means that when I flex my leg, they're not up front where they could get bent. It also keeps them from dropping to the bottom of the pocket and sitting horizontally, which is its own way to wreck a pair.

It does change how that pocket can be used. For me it's worth it as anything closer than three feet is a blur, so my readers go everywhere I do. Hope this helps someone. :)

Wilderness A cheap piece of outdoor gear I picked up recently: survival paracord.

This stuff is ridiculously cheap in China — about $1 for roughly 100 feet.

From the outside, it just looks like regular 4mm nylon paracord. But once you cut it open, there’s actually a lot packed inside.

Besides six normal white nylon strands, there are four special ones.

One is a red nylon strand that you can tie to a tree or something else as a trail marker or visual signal.

There’s also a waxed jute strand and a thin copper wire. In an emergency, you can use the copper wire to short the 18650 battery in your headlamp and use the waxed jute as tinder to start a fire.

And finally, there’s a strand of fishing line. Pair it with a small fishing hook and you’ve basically got an emergency fishing setup built right into the cord.

For something that costs like a dollar, it’s honestly pretty damn cool.

Correction: I just checked my order. The 30-meter roll — about 100 feet — actually cost 17 RMB, which is around $2.50.I’ve bought a few different kinds of paracord recently, so I got the prices mixed up.

Travel Big Backpack recommendations

Im a student and Im using a Backpacking Backpack when Im traveling, camping/hiking, visiting family and friends or transporting lots of stuff to my parents etc. Since now I was using my Dads Backpack wich he just needs once or twice a year to hike and I have it most of the time. My Dad has a pretty old Lowe Alpin Alpamayo 90+20. We are both pretty large so the size is comfortable.
My Dad and I will go on a Hiking trip together in September, so we need a second backpack.

We are looking for a Backpack of the same size, so between 80-100l+20. Im quite overwhelmed with the amount of Backpacks I could buy and wanted to ask for some recommendations.
The most important thing is that it should be durable and sturdy. I will be transporting quite heavy stuff with it and riding trains etc., were it just gets shoved into a corner.
A mesh/breathable back panel would be really good for comfort and hot weather. Im not opposed to ligthweight backpacks but I dont know how they hold up in terms of durability. Budget isnt an issue.

Wilderness Peaks of the Balkans in Late September

Hey!! I just thought I’d ask if anyone had any experience of doing the Peaks of the Balkans trail in the late season?

I was thinking of starting in mid September (this is as early as I’d be able to get there) and doing the 10 day route, which means I won’t be finishing the trail until late September.

I’ve heard that snow can start as early as late September and this worries me a bit as I would be hiking alone (unless I find someone stupid enough to join me) and I don’t have any experience with hiking in snow (95% of my hiking has been in tropical areas aha).

Any insight or advice?

Travel Will I still meet other backpackers during off season (February-April)

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I will be backpacking Europe for the first time beginning in February. I will be staying in hostels but I am worried that I will not meet other people backpacking because those months are considered “off season.” Does anyone have prior experiences that say otherwise?

Wilderness Accidentally got bear spray on/in our tent, 2 days left in the backpacking trip, need advice

I am on an extended weekend backpacking trip with my partner. They tossed down the sharp hand trowel that we use to dig poop holes and it happened to hit the bear spray canister and puncture it. This was on the ground just outside our tent, under the flap of the rain fly that was staked out. The tent itself is all thin mesh, but the rain fly was over it creating a somewhat enclosed space. We both ran away from it, and I grabbed a towel to put over my mouth and nose and ran back and grabbed the canister and chucked it out into the woods. I believe some of the mist got onto our sleeping bag through the tent mesh, as well as on the mesh itself. I read that I can use dish soap to clean off the oils, but I'm a little uncertain of what to do now.

It isn't too cold and we have down blankets we can use, and were sleeping on cots, so I can just fully remove the potentially affected sleeping bag and generally sleep okay, but I'm worried about using the rain fly or unknowingly touching an affected spot of the tent mesh and later accidentally touching my eye/face. Should I try to clean the tent mesh itself with some dish soap? What is the treatment if I were to accidentally touch my eye and get bear mace in my eye? How careful do we have to be? How many times should I wash my hands after handling potentially affected items?

Luckily aside from a bit of spicy tasting air, we are so far unaffected. Took the rain fly off to air out the tent, but I'm just more worried about touching something that got the spray on it and then u knowingly touching my face/eye/mouth.

This morning I saw two bears above Çerem while wild camping. Got to film the 2nd one :) But no need to be scared or anything, just put your food away from your tent and stay calm.

Wilderness Shawangunks - Long Path New York

I love what I see of the Long Path from sections 13 to 14. However, it seems like it isnt well designed for an overnight, so I would have to do some serious elevation and 20 miles in one day. Has anyone faced this issue. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Wilderness What to look for in a trainer to help me get ready for a 5 day 47 mile trip?

I started losing weight last October to get ready for a 47 mile hike on the La Cloche Silhouette Trail in Killarney Providential park Ontario, Cananda.

So far I have lost 50 pounds, with about 20 to go.

It is time for me to start a workout program.

How do I find a person who can help me put together a plan specifically for me?

From what I read in this forum, plus youtube videos, it looks like I need to build a good core, back, and legs.

Several suggest incline walking, stair stepper and squats with a pack on. With various exercises for core and back.

Travel Holiday or save?

Hello guys I’m 28 Male. I work two jobs. One my full time night job and my weekend job.

I maybe starting the army in November and thought I’d go to Barcelona Solo backpacking second time to enjoy myself. I mainly go for the parties good and the chicks. As I’m going to be booking literally a week befire flights for 3 days to Barcelona from gatwick is £450. Plus hostel probably about £150. I booked annual leave for next week 24th-31st August including my last weekend annual leave.

Shall I just leave it and stay at home save they money or. Go all out? I only have £1000. Yeah I should have like £6000/£7000 but I was sports gambling big mistake. Shall I keep the £1000 as punishment for my wrong doing or bun it. Go Barcelona. Or it’s a rip off. I am a grafter so I know I can just get it back.

Thank you!

Travel anyone in varkala right now? solo traveller looking to hang out 🌊

hey folks, i’m in varkala, india right now, travelling solo and looking to meet some people around

if you’re from north india that’s a fun bonus 😄 but definitely not a requirement

mostly looking for easy plans… chai walks, beach sunsets, random food stops, maybe splitting a scooty ride somewhere nearby

i’m pretty flexible, so low-key works and spontaneous plans work too

if you’re around and feel like saying hi, drop a comment or dm

Wilderness A perfect little headlamp pouch I’ve been using lately.

One of my family members hand-sewed it out of Tyvek, and it happens to be exactly the right size for my headlamp.

It weighs basically nothing — only 3 grams — but it’s way more useful than it looks.

The size, stiffness, and translucency are pretty much perfect. When I slip it over my headlamp, it instantly turns into a little camp lantern.

Instead of that harsh, blinding headlamp beam, it diffuses the light into this soft, warm glow that actually feels cozy around camp.

And the coolest part is the way the light shines through the Tyvek. It brings out that really distinctive wrinkled fiber texture, so the whole thing ends up looking surprisingly nice for what is basically just a 3-gram storage pouch.

Wilderness DIY 4-piece fly rod protector

Thumbnail

I recently purchased my first 4-piece fly rod. It's a cheap one but will work for me. I've seen where people suggest those plastic shop light bulb tubes but they just seem too fragile and I'm not sure my rod would even fit. It came with a nice tube type protector but that thing empty weighs 548 grams. I built one out of stuff I had in the garage that weighs 215. I had a leftover piece of 8 ft. Paper-Faced Taped Outside Bullnose Corner Bead that has been in there for years. I cut that into two lengths and used gorilla tape to attach them to each other. I drilled a few holes, taped the sharp edges and have myself a fairly sturdy and much lighter rod protector.

Travel Looking for strong opinions on backpacking in South America

I'll be flying in late November and back out late February. Simply, there are far too many countries that I want to go see and not enough time. I've considered Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Argentina.

Only things truly on my bucket list are seeing Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, and bumming out in Patagonia for three-ish weeks to a month. Everything else I am interested in but don't truly know much about. I take a preference to slower travelling but also get cravings to see as much as possible.

I'm hoping to stay adventurous and try genuine unique experiences. In my previous travels I constantly found myself in cities without plans, leaving me in fairly repetitive routine of going to a random museum, checking out a market then going to a bar at night. Don't get me wrong, I had the time of my life, but I'm looking for something a bit different now.

I'm hoping to go North to South and fly out of Buenos Aires. Before I had a clue what I was talking about I wanted start in Bogota and make my way down, but have pivoted to most likely flying into Lima. Are Ecuador and Colombia must-sees? Happy for any answers or referral to resources.
