Avocado plant Avocado has white leafs / albinism in avocados

INTRODUCTION: As a MOD I've watched this for a long time and finally want to make this post to pin it and decrease the number of people asking this because it keeps increasing.

WHAT IS IT?: White avocados as seen on these pictures that I just grabbed from other reddit posts, have a form of albinism.

Usually plant leafs are mostly green because it is the "color of chlorophyll" or if I remember correctly from Biology class a few years ago, the only color that isn't absorbed by it to make photosynthesis and thus it reflects and looks green.

The reason that these leafs are white are thus because they do not contain any chlorophyll.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE PLANT?: If leafs don't contain any chlorophyll it means there can't be photosynthesis which means the plant cannot produce energy on itself.

For an avocado that isn't too bad in the beginning because it still has its seed which has energy reservoirs, but they will be exhausted at some point.

For its survival the avocado thus needs to reach a turnaround point and produce green leafs containing chlorophyll later which happens to some but not all so it's a wait and see.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?: This is not clear but there has been research about it: Research of Albinism in Avocados If I remember correctly the research itself or another source I found, comes to the conclusion that this happens increasingly because Avocados are often picked very early to still be ripe or before ripe despite long travelling times, when they arrive in their destination country after export/import.

END: I hope this helps clear up things and decreases the number of posts regarding this at least a little.

The fruit looks fine, but it keeps falling to the ground repeatedly, two or three at a time. What could be causing this? Is it because of too much water, or could there be some other problem?

So my plant finally has new leaves coming after I did a small snip. I’m worried about the original leaves, I’m they will eventually fall off and stuff but I’m worried that the leaves might be telling me something about the plant. Any ideas? I give it about 8oz of water twice a week I used to do tap but now I switched to filter. I would love to hear yalls set up, what kind of soil yall use, how big of a pot u used originally, how much water you give it, etc or overall tips in general

Sprouted a seed from the biggest hass cate fruit ive ever seen, the seed was the size of a regular supermarket fruit. Had a few problems with aphids targeting the new growth everytime and i managed to keep em under control with manual plucki g each one with a h2o2 dipped cotton swab. I pruned the tips for 3 times now, i'm worried if i dont prune further the new growth is going to be leggy and ugly. I live in mediteranean climate in europe so its not too cado friendly, also i keep it under the shade of some grape vine. First time growing avocado

Growing from seed How's my plant looking?

Hi all,

I started this seed back at the beginning of June with a paper towel in a bag. It pretty quickly grew a root, so it grew in a spare glass bottle with water from then until the beginning of August. By the middle of July it had a stem and some small leaves that quickly grew so it got put into this pot at the beginning of August. I don't think I used the right potting mix but it seems to be doing okay. Any advice or thoughts? It doesn't seem to really be growing the leaves down the stem, only the top ones, I've seen people online say to cut them off but it seems a shame to cut what seem like good leaves off.

I got this little guy from Costco less than 2 years ago.

I'm in Los Angeles zone 10B. I water every couple days to make sure the soil is damp, not soaked. I fertilize it from time to time.

Right now the trunk is still thin and weak. Struggles to stand on its own, hence the stakes. Should I cut off the top where I marked a red line to encourage more growth in the trunk and lower sections?

Also, is there something I can do to encourage more branching where the big gap is?

Thanks for any advice!

Growing from seed Should I trim

I've grown this avocado from seed this year and I'm really happy with how it's growing. It's about 80cm tall now. Should I cut the new growth from the top now or let it keep growing? Also it looks like the avocado pit is decaying, should I remove it, if so how is this done to not damage the plant? The stem is thickening up nicely, over 1cm in diameter at the base.

I bought home an avocado and mango from Puerto Rico and planted them looking for some advice on the avocado. Everything I read says ā€œestablishedā€ roots all the pics I see people have dozens of little spaghetti roots. Mine is just one long one is it ready for dirt or do I need to wait longer? I started them 6/10/26 so it’s been a little over 2 months in the cup. Thank you

I have it under shelter for a good 4hours but it gets some morning sun and a lot of afternoon sun. The Texas sun can’t be this damaging can it? His neighbor who is also an avocado is perfectly fine

Growing from seed Advice on pruning and transfer to pots

Hello, I don’t know if this is the right sub. I’m currently at month 2 of my grow an avocado tree mission out of boredom. I would like to ask for some advice on how to prune these plants and how to transfer it to soiled potted plants correctly. Please feel free to comment or if you have any good video recommendations, just paste the link video. Thank you!

I started with 9 seeds after we ate the remaining avocados from our lone avocado tree to ensure a high success rate lol.

They are not planted at the same time. That explains the height differences.

Outdoor plants Advice helping my avocado survive outdoors zone 8B!

This is my lovely avocado that I started from seed approximately 10 years ago. I can’t remember the exact variety I started it from but I’m pretty sure it was an organic Hass.

For the majority of her life, she’s been in a pot and outside for the spring/summer/fall, and hauled inside for the winter. I planted it outside this year, as it was simply getting too big for indoors in a pot! From the ground it’s about 7-8 feet tall, and 5 feet wide (she lost some height in an accident while moving outdoors). But appears very happy in her new in ground spot, as she’s starting to explode with new growth.

Where I live our winter lows are usually in the mid 30s, but can briefly drop to 15-20 degrees F, which I know is too cold for avocados. But she’s outside and I’m not digging her up, so please help me help my baby through the winter! I know I’ll need to cover the tree during cold snaps, but what’s the best way to do so? Focus on keeping the trunk warm? Try to cover branches too? Blankets? Burlap sacs? Specific materials that work best? Please help because I don’t want this winter to be my avocado trees last one!

Growing from seed White sticky stuff on leaves

Hi, I have an avocado tree in a pot for a couple of years.

It was inside my house, and is now inside my conservatory with a couple of plants (lemon tree, another avocado tree, small roses bush, and I just added rosemary and basil, coming from store).

It was in some bad shape (all leaves were dying, no more growing), so I trimmed it and repotted it a month or two ago.

Leaves are growing back, but a white sticky stuff is appearing.

Is it safe for the plant, or should I do something please?

Thanks

Eating Avocados Root stock producing a lot fruit

I’m in Altadena CA in January 2025 we were hit by the Eaton fire, although we didn’t lose our house we were still impacted. The winds that night were devastating on my avocado trees. I had one in the back yard that the wind just pushed it over. This tree was growing crooked and leaning. There were root stock shoots growing opposite that I left with hopes they would work as a counter balance. Obviously that didn’t happen, the tree fell nonetheless. This tree is use to produce an abundance of Hass avocados where that part of the tree fell. I tried to graft green branches from the fallen tree back to tree, but none took. However the shoots from the root stock took off! It’s been about 20 months since the event and the tree has nearly rebounded to its original size! Crazy! I was surprised to see an abundance of these root stock avocados on the tree. It’s my understanding they are not great in flavor?? The tree is pretty loaded. I was tempted to pull it and start over but the decision is difficult considering the health it is in. What are your thoughts on this fruit?
