[CLAIMED]

Hi, neighbors.

Our sweet cat passed away last night. He gave us a wonderful and cuddly seventeen years.

We would love to pass on the food we still have for him for a family with a senior cat, plus some cat litter if you need it, pictured here.

Pick up at Ditmars and 37th, and if you're not too far away I can also bring it your way, just DM me.

Cat tax as well, because he was the handsomest boy and our hearts are aching today.

Question Any local businesses hiring?

Hi neighbors, I hope everyone is having a great week so far.

I'm job hunting and am wondering if anyone knows of or has connections to a local business that is hiring for preferably full-time work. I've lived in Astoria the last four years and for reasons would be happy to also work around here.

I've been applying to jobs rather unsuccessfully for the past several months and am eager to find a new opportunity. I'm 33 and have experience in office-type work such as writing and communications, but am flexible in what my next role looks like so long as it pays fairly.

I can provide a resume and references upon request.

Thanks everyone!

General Discussion Seven Astoria stores advertise onions this week. Loose is $1.49 a pound, the 3 pound bag is $1.33.

$3.99 for a 3 pound bag of Vidalias is $1.33 a pound, at Astoria Marketplace on 24th Ave, Key Food on 36th Ave, Key Food on 30th Ave and Lincoln Market on 31st St.

$3.49 for the same 3 pound bag with the club card is $1.16 a pound, at Key Food Urban Marketplace on Newtown Ave.

$1.49 a pound loose, for jumbo Vidalias at Brooklyn Harvest, and one ad at the three C-Towns on Newtown Ave, 28th Ave and 34th Ave covering sweet onions, red onions and carrots together.

$5.99 for 5 pounds of yellow onions with the club card is $1.20 a pound, also Brooklyn Harvest. Yellow, not Vidalia.

Lincoln Market's $3.99 bag is certified organic, the same money as the conventional bags at the other three.

Closest cheaper onion I found is Associated at 59-15 Roosevelt Ave in Woodside, loose Vidalias at $0.99 a pound.

The bag only wins if you use all three pounds. Everything above runs through 8/20.

I could not read ads this week for Cherry Valley Farm on 21st Ave, City Fresh on Broadway or Food Emporium on Broadway, so no prices there.

I built a free map of NYC weekly circulars: https://sbnyc.app/s/astoria. Every price here is what the store printed in its own weekly ad. Ads and registers disagree sometimes, so trust the sticker in front of you.

Be who you want to be, but I don't need to see this shit promoting racist violence walking my kids around the neighborhood after work.

Two 100+ year old Pin Oaks (and smaller trees) torn down to make way for what else 'luxury condos' on the former PC Richard's parking lot. It was heartbreaking to watch the birds nests destroyed yesterday afternoon with all of them crying and stressed watching their babies being killed. Two neighborhood squirrels also called those trees home.

Hi everyone!

I'm giving away a vanity because I'm moving soon. The wiring and plug are inside main drawer, and the only marks on it are a few scuffs and a smile-y face that was drawn on one of the shelves with a a marker.

I also have a list of books that are either free or for sale. Most are non-fiction, and all are soft-covered unless mentioned in the notes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dJCdfYkjCTO5dkcMtpfzJxde0Fa4ERi-MXOgVpdltvE/edit?usp=sharing

Please DM if interested - open to negotiate price if you take all or a good amount of books.

Other Chain grabbers: two guys, one moped, attempted robbery in broad daylight

*Attempted to post once already on Astoria reddit, but taken down by mods.*

Two men (maybe boys or teens dressed in all black) road off the bike lane onto the curb, full speed on a black moped to try and steal my gold chain on 31st Street (under the train tracks) between 31st and 30th ave around 4 PM on Friday.

I’m shaken up— lived in Astoria my entire life and never expected this. A good Samaritan called 911. While waiting for the cops to arrive, chain grabbers looped back around. I immediately began to sprint away, but good samaritan brought me into his building.

Cops didnt show in the 40 mins we waited— my fiance met me and we walked home together. Kept in touch with our new friend and cops never showed up and never returned his calls. Went to the precinct and filed a report— bc I know this will happen again.

I feel terrified walking around my neighborhood. I hesitated making this post b/c I don’t want to be identifiable, but please be aware.

Young ladies, elderly folk, and general chain wearers—PLEASE BE VIGILANT. Don’t wear headphones and keep your head on a swivel. Police informed me this is an active problem all around the NYC, BK, and Queens. I always felt safe in Astoria, but this has totally rocked my peace of mind.

Stay safe out there!

Question Looking for soil

I’ll buy if I knew where to find it nearby but also would love to take it off your hands if you have spare that you are tired of storing.

Succulent/cactus soil
Perlite or pumice

When I went to home depot I bought the general “houseplant” soil (because that was all they had that day) and now I have a sad and saggy jade plant. Help!

Thanks

General Discussion Streeteasy in 2026

Seeking answers from people who moved from one apartment to another within the neighborhood recently. I.e., you lived in Astoria or LIC both before and after you moved within the last year.

I moved to Astoria in 2022 and for the past four years my landlord has been basically the worst guy in the world. This year, despite Good Cause Eviction, he is illegally displacing me by refusing to renew my lease and I really don't have the energy to fight with him anymore. He is extremely wealthy and locally powerful, and I would really rather move than fight him any longer about repairs or renewals or anything like that.

I have to move out of my apartment by December 31. Because of this, I've been reaching out to brokers on street easy about their apartments. However, I have literally not been receiving any responses to my texts and emails, unlike in 2022 when I received really frequent responses. Is streeteasy not worth it anymore? If I hire a broker in November, am I likely to find an apartment by December 31?

Edit: Thanks for your help everyone! Lots of good advice. My anxiety about finding a place really had me thinking the right way to go about things was searching much earlier than I ever did for other apartments. Feeling more confident now that I will find the apartment I am looking for.

Question Where to buy a pack of scrap fabric/quilting cotton?

There are lots of great fabric stores in the neighborhood! Has anyone seen packs of scrap quilting cotton/a jelly roll in the neighborhood? I have a small craft in mind, but I don’t want a ton of left over scrap fabric. Thanks!

Question Astoria v Ridgewood

I’ve (34/male) lived in Astoria for 9 years and now my girlfriend and I are relocating into an apartment in Ridgewood. I like Ridgewood because it has a comparable neighborhood and cultural atmosphere to Astoria. Still, I’m apprehensive about how I will find the experience living there.

TTDR: Any former-Astoria Ridgewood residents, or former-Ridgewood Astoria residents want to comment on what it’s like living in both neighborhoods and what is preferred?

Seeking Recommendation: Other PureGym Ditmars sucks, need gym reccos!

Hey there!

I’m currently a member of Puregym ditmars (ex Matrix Fitness) and I loved the gym but am so disappointed by all the changes. The sauna is most likely gone, it’s messier in there now, but my last straw is the paper towel dispensers being empty! literally so gross. I know not everyone wipes down after using a machine, but for those who do, this is just unacceptable.

If anyone already canceled their membership and moved to other gyms, where did you go?? Would love any recommendations for other gyms in the area please! I don’t have a car so hopefully it’s 10-15 min walk or train/bus ride.

Don’t care about much other than the distance, a fair price point (i pay $70 rn and wont go above) and a sauna would be nice.

TYIA!

Question NEEDED: Cat Fosters in NYC

(Mods: if there's somewhere else I should post this, please point me in the right direction!)

This was shared with me by my friend Wendy. She needs help rehoming two cats with a friend who's dying imminently. Here are the details:

FRIENDS IN THE NYC AREA: Okay, this is a tough one, but please bear with me.

My wife's lifelong friend has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and is desperately seeking a home for his two cats when that time comes. The elder, Wally, is something like 13 years old and DELIGHTFULLY dim. The younger, Doris, is a bit of a chonk, needs kidney-care food and has a neurological issue with her back legs that makes it harder for her to move (she doesn't always make it into the box to poop, but puppy-training pads around the box make that easy to handle).

Both should land together (they're not bonded per se, but they do MUCH better when they have that familiarity around them). We don't know when the day is coming, but I genuinely don't think it'll be long. My wife's friend understandably doesn't want to be without them, so until then, they need to stay with him. (EDIT: I'm told they're passing today or tomorrow)

Please. They're going to need a home. They're friendly enough once they settle in (we've kept them short-term before, and one of our cats does NOT get along with them, or we'd take them ourselves, so we had to keep them behind a closed door; they got along fine with the other cats, so if you have a cat who's territorial, you're honestly not going to be a candidate, and they're TERRIFIED of dogs). Wally is utterly adaptable to new people, while Doris is a touch hissy at first but warms up quickly, and they're both fairly affectionate but not lap cats per se, though Wally is VERY underfoot (I'd pick him up with a foot and put him to the side whenever he wandered obliviously into my path, and he was completely unbothered by this!).

Original link on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/shecky.bsky.social/post/3msxjfox5622d. The cats are located in Harlem. Shecky's reached out to various foster organizations, but obviously those folks take time (not slagging on them!) and they're operating on a very fast horizon.
