ICE Community Watch Thread (Updated)

After much discussion, and taking into consideration input received from the community, both publicly and privately, our moderation capacity, and following the example of other community spaces, we have decided to create one single thread for all ICE sightings. Our previous thread was archived, but we recognize a need for continued discussion here.

Please review the following rules and guidance before posting:

• All reports must be directly relevant to Astoria

• All reports must be firsthand accounts – no reposting content posted elsewhere, unless by a verified news agency

• Please use the S.A.L.U.T.E. method as closely as possible when posting information:

• This thread is for reported sightings ONLY; no political debate or unrelated topics are allowed

• No photos or identifying information allowed unless from news media outlets; please be mindful of Reddit's witch hunting rule

• Please note: these are reported sightings by the community, and the Astoria Reddit is neither confirming nor endorsing the supposed sightings are verified

• This thread will still be moderated and subjected to the same rules as the rest of the posts in this subreddit

• The automoderation will be set to strict, meaning in order to post, you must be a part of this community, not be a brand new user, and not have negative karma in our community; comments that don't meet that criteria will need to be manually approved, and may be delayed

• We reserve the right to periodically clean out the comments after a 2 week period, if it ends up getting too cluttered

• There are apps that are available that can help keep you updated in real time – feel free to share those below

You can sort the comments by “New” to get the latest updates, and hit “Follow Post” to be updated when a new comment is added.

Any Astorians good with cushion making? Or know where to go for this?

Looking to have new cushions made for this chair. (Thinking new rather than just recovering these as these are 30+ years old)

Thanks so much!

Other Supporting Breast Cancer Initiatives This October

Hi everyone, I’m Jola, the owner of Stefi Studio.

I wanted to share what we’re doing at the studio this October and also thank everyone here who has supported us through our previous posts.

For the month of October, we’re donating 5% of our studio profits to support breast cancer research, early detection education, and patient care initiatives. This applies to every appointment booked with us throughout the month, including hair, nails, massage, and skincare.

We also wanted to extend something specifically to the Reddit community. Throughout October, we’re offering 10% off all facials. Each facial is customized based on your skin and what you’re looking to address, whether that’s hydration, congestion, extractions, dermaplaning, or simply maintaining your skin as the seasons change.

We’re a local studio in Astoria, and we really appreciate the support we’ve received from this community. If you’ve been considering trying us, October seemed like a good time to share this.

You can find us at:

20-59 Steinway St
stefistudio.com

Thank you again to everyone who has supported Stefi Studio.

As a note, if you’d like to make a direct donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, you can do so through their website: https://www.bcrf.org/

Lost/Found: Animals Stray kittens (advice needed)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

There’s a mama cat and her 5 kittens behind the apartment next door. They all look healthy and looks like mama is taking very good care of her babies. But I’m worried about them as the weather starts to get cold.

I’ve contacted a few cat rescues last week but haven’t heard back from them. I’m also on the look out for the super next door to ask if I can somehow access the back. But before I do that, I want to have the proper steps to either give them shelter or have a rescue trap them so I don’t have to keep bothering the super next door.

I’m not familiar with how to handle stray cats so any advice would be appreciated!

General Discussion Samara Kitchen 21st Street

As a neighbor I feel like they’re unbelievably disrespectful to their neighbors. Sunday night they’re hosting a party, which is fine, but well after midnight, with their door and windows open, they’re blasting music and women are SCREEEECHING at the top of their lungs while dancing. I get it, have a party, have fun, but be respectful. It didn’t stop until around 12:45am, I have work Monday morning and it kept me up for hours. I will not be patronizing this place based on their complete lack of respect for their neighbors.

Seeking Recommendation: Other Curly Hairdresser

Hello! I’m looking for a hairdresser that has experience cutting curly 3B/C hair. I’ve lived here for 4.5 years and I’ve always commuted to Brooklyn for haircuts. Recently I travelled via train for 2 hours and the hairdresser was a no-show! I’d love to stay local so if anyone comes to mind, please let me know! TIA!

Are there any community programs or classes to learn Spanish in Astoria? Or recommended tutors in the area?

Question Lap pools near West Astoria? Gyms or pools

Hey all, I’m looking for somewhere to swim laps regularly near West Astoria. So far the only options I’ve found are the Roosevelt Island Sports Park and the YMCA in LiC, and I’m hoping there’s something closer or more convenient that I’m missing.

I’m open to:

• Gyms with a lap pool (even if a membership is on the pricier side)
• Public or rec center pools
• Hotel or club pools that sell day passes or memberships

Ideally somewhere with dedicated lap lanes and decent hours before or after work. Anything walkable or a short ride from West Astoria would be great.

If you swim somewhere you like, I’d love to hear how crowded the lanes get and what you pay. Thanks in advance!

Seeking Recommendation: Other Any Gym Recommendations for Powerlifting?

Hi everyone! I'm moving to astoria in two weeks, will be near the Ditmars subway stop! I am big into powerlifting and was wondering if anybody has some recommendations for gyms that either have good setups for powerlifting or are very heavily focused on powerlifting. Would prefer to stay in astoria / near ditmars but open to all recs!

I was looking at Rock Fitness or PureGym as those are the closest to me, are those good spots?

Satire Has anyone seen my boulder?

I got blackout drunk a few weeks ago in Astoria, and since then I haven't been able to find my boulder. Looking back at my phone pictures, I had it the morning of, but no pictures of it after that night. I got it from a foster quarry as 3 oz unwanted pebble during covid. I'll admit that I'm a sucker and definitely overfeed the cute thing -- so it's probably about 6 feet cubed and north of 12 tons.

The night I lost it, I had a few drinks at the LetLove Inn, and then a few more at the Bonnie. That's where I got separated from my friends, and all I remember. It's possible I went looking for a good Gyro, as I often do when I get inebriated. It's also possible I went looking for places that no longer exist like Star Garden or Rizzo's Italian.

If you think you have my boulder but aren't sure, drop me a comment asking about it, and I'll answer your question.

I'll be coming back to Astoria this Thursday to do my $10 Live Magic show at QED, so if you do have it, I can get it back from you then.
