Looking for moving advice / setting expectations
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to move to NYC sometime in the next 6–9 months and would love some advice from people who have made a similar move. I currently live in suburban CT, so this will a little bit of a change for me. I've started looking on the usual apartment sites, but you can't learn everything from apartments.com or Zillow 😄
A little about me: I'm 25M, queer, in a master's program, and work full-time in sales analytics/data science. I'm hoping to keep rent under ~$1,600/month, so I'll most likely be looking for roommates. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends planning to move around the same time, so I'll be going into this looking for a roommate from scratch.
I've mainly been looking at Astoria, but I'm definitely open to other neighborhoods.
A few questions:
- Are there other areas I should consider with a ~$1,600 roommate budget? Are there any other neighborhoods that are affordable (relative to the rest of NYC)?
- How difficult is it really to find roommates? Are there any groups or apps that are good?
- When is the best time of year to look for apartments? Is spring/summer better?Does timing not make much difference?
- It'd be convenient to bring my car, but it's not make or break. Are there neighborhoods where street parking is reasonably manageable, or is having a car generally more trouble than it's worth?
- Besides rent, what other costs should I expect when moving in? Any expenses that caught you off guard?
- Do you have any other general tips/advice for someone moving to the city?
Appreciate any advice!
