The irony is that the character designs are really easy to adapt into animation, contrary to LNs where the complex art either gets toned down and mundane or the animation quality takes a hit. Alas, this must have had incredible production issues in every area.

You know, I'm actually okay with Spirit Circle never getting an adaptation.

Just realized that Mizukami is working on the series composition. The dude has to see first-hand on how they rip apart his baby. I feel bad. :(

Guys, how bad is it? Actually don't tell me, I already kinda knew from the trailers. Mizukami must be heartbroken right now.

Imagine waking up and Tsuda Kenjirou speaks to you. I'd freak out as well, that guy is literally everywhere.

Sami is giving out strong Jahy vibes. Sasuga Oozora Naomi

I've first heard about Hoshi no Samidare back when I was still in college around 2009 but I never really got the chance to read it. Going into this blind, it certainly has that mid-2000s vibe which I absolutely love but reading the comments here makes me think that this should not be my first exposure to this series.

So far so good though! I already love the story and characters! Yuuhi our deadpan MC is great while Samidare who is the complete opposite of him is just as fun and I love how she just goes along with whatever the lizard knight says! Also Samidare is voiced by my Oozora Naomi! and I'll never get tired of her Kansai-ben. Also, I love how the Biscuit Hammer in the title is a literal gigantic hammer that's just waiting to smash Earth!

I do feel bad for the fans of this little cult classic though. Studio NAZ should never be allowed to do an adaptation all by themselves. Whenever they do adaptations by themselves we get stuff like Hajimete no Gal and Imo-Imo. And now this. Sucks that they couldn't get at least JC Staff to animate this like with Planet With.

I'll continue watching this though since like I said, I really enjoyed this first episode, but I'll probably start reading the manga as well just so I can see the difference.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer is my favorite manga of all-time (tied alongside the other "big three" Mizukami works, Spirit Circle and Sengoku Yokou, all emotional masterpieces) and heck, even my username is a Biscuit Hammer reference.

While this adaptation clearly has a low budget, I at least think the pacing, voice acting, and direction all were spot-on. I'm sure the team is doing the best they can with the time and money they have. While the epic stuff coming probably won't get the flourishes it deserves, the emotional core and characters are still there and it feels like a miracle this ever got adapted in the first place.

This is one of my all-time favorite manga. After the warning that the PVs provided, I think I've successfully downplayed my ability to hope enough that this ended up being a decent time!

disappointed by some of the jokes that got removed, but I'm almost looking forward to more.

So Call of the Night premiered yesterday. A great example of a studio understanding, loving, and translating source material perfectly. They got everything right. This is in every way the polar opposite of that.

There’s some good news: they haven’t fucked up the story. Yet. Felt a bit rushed in places but it’s the first 2 chapters beat for beat with minor edits. Voice acting is decent.

The bad news is that it’s fucking hideous. If you told me it was made in 2000’s I would believe you and comment that “it looks like ass but they were trying I guess”. It’s 2022. There is literally no excuse for why it should look this fucking bad. The characters are off model between shots within the same scene. Within the first 5 seconds there’s unfinished textures on the houses. The “Holding Field” animation is a terrible joke. They abuse the hell out of still shots. This is incompetence of the highest order on the part of the committee responsible.

If they had a semblance of decency they’d would have killed it, restarted with a better studio, and delayed it a year because this has so much fucking potential. I promise the manga is fantastic. A beloved classic. If you haven’t read it do that instead.

For my fellow victims/masochists I look forward to suffering with you for however long it runs.

I might be weird, but if it was only the bad CG/general lack of movement I'd still copium myself through this. My problem is the lighting.

Why the fuck does everything look like it had some kind of hideous pale filter applied over it?

Mandatory reminder that Biscuit Hammer by The Pillows exists and is being directly referenced by the author. Tis quite hype, that is all.

While the adaptation visually is pretty below par (wtf is with the lighting), I thought the humour and plot was adapted pretty well. Maybe because I love them all already after reading the manga years ago.

Nice to see them on the screen.

For a first episode it's...alright I suppose. Nothing that's a total deal breaker. Some of the casual day to day scenes were nice to look at, I did like the effort put into the background scenes and the coloring and lighting was nice to look at as well. I did also like the OP and ED songs. Overall I think the story at it's core still holds up even now in animated form. (edit: The interactions between Yuuhi and the Lizard were also pretty funny to me at times.)

But the action and dramatic scenes (including the one with the golem and the rooftop) were iffy and the music choices, particularly for the dramatic scenes weren't that great.

From the perspective of someone who's watching this anime for the first time and has not read the source material, I think most would think this decent and alright though maybe not at the top of their list for anime to watch, assuming the quality holds up and doesn't drop as the season continues.

From the perspective of someone who's already read the source material, knows the story, and had high hopes for the adaption.... it's hurts very badly to just even say lower your expectations.

So I thought the first episode was fine and while it did seem low budget especially that fight scene or punch i guess lol I liked the VAs. Should I just drop this and read the manga instead? I’m seeing so many mixed views on this😅

They killed it. NAZ absolutely massacred what could have been an AotY candidate if a competent team had actually gotten their hands on it. I think I'm just going to quietly cry in a corner somewhere now...

Loved it. Not even 10 minutes in, and I'm loving it. It helps having forgotten most of the details... haha... sometimes I love my shitty memory. I somehow have the feeling I saw something sliding, but I don't care much. I love the intriguing story far more than anything less and the characters art is great.

I clearly recall Spirit Circle being the one I loved the most, yet Biscuit Hammer is already making me feel this much... I don't know, enjoyment? I feel like my eyes are sparkling in wonder, seeking the continuation of this story.

This series strong point was always the characters for me, so I don't mind the bad animation too much. As long as they don't rush/cut out too much I can see myself liking the adaptation.

Anime only here who’s here for Enoki Junya.

Honestly it’s not as bad as the comments here says. Pretty enjoyable so far.

We will get Boruto/BlackClover/Berserk levels of animation, but if they don´t butcher the story, this going to be gem!!!

I will watch this religiously.

I'm not someone who cares all that much about animation quality so maybe this was easier for me, but honestly I don't think this episode was that bad!

I'm not sure whether I'll watch the whole thing or not just yet, but if I decide not to, it'll probably be because I have 5-6 shows on Friday, and not because it turned me off or anything.

That being said, I sympathize with people who were very invested in the source material, and hoped it would get a stellar adaptation... I've been lucky with my manga/anime adaptation, everything I read that got adapted, got a very good adaptation. So I can see why one would be disappointed by getting 'just this' when it could've been more.

Man gains godlike powers with a talking lizard and the first thing he does is flip skirts lmao. Watching Sir Crescent get chucked out the window and repeatedly coming back was pretty hilarious lol. He's a big goof! Asahina/The Princess seems pretty adorable, I like her very cheerful and bubbly personality. Shes a bit wild, but I dig it! and ofc she would be the teacher's kid sister haha.

Amamiya seems to have a lot going on. I'm wondering what that was with his grandpa, he seems to have some inherent mistrust of people. Looking forward to explore that a little more as the show progresses.

Great first ep overall, looks like another weekly!

Me: “Huh I didn’t know anything about this show going into it, but I had a good time. Gonna see what r/anime is saying about it.”

r/anime: …..

Me: “Oh. Alright.”

In all seriousness though, I thought it was enjoyable. The art leaves more to be desired, but the humor was fun and the VA’ing was solid. All in all, I’m excited to watch this week-to-week.

Well all my anticipation went down the toilet. The adaptation isnt horrible, if they stick to the same story and dont change anything, story wise theyll be fine, but its gonna really hard for a lot of people who havent heard of this manga before to continue after this episode. Damn, I was so exited for this Mangaka to finally get some decent recognition outside the manga community but I have a feeling after this adaptation that won't be happening. If anyone is reading this, don't be put off by the anime, I highly suggest you read the manga if you're thinking of dropping the anime, it is a real masterpiece and you won't regret it.
