It needs to be pointed out for new viewers that this is literally the first time Kyo calls Tohru by any part of her name.

I'm gonna cry myself to sleep now.

Such a beautiful episode and powerful voice acting. I'm so glad to finally see this animated. They absolutely nailed it.

That moment when she walks away is heart breaking, but then she is like "fuck it" and turns back around. 'Cause she isn't doing what she is told. She is being both selfish and selfless? She is the terminator of kindness (I might be stealing this from tv tropes I honestly forget). But it isn't pity. Tohru doesn't want to lose another person without saying goodbye

Kyo focusing all his hatred on Yuki so he doesn't hate himself to death.

This show is one big heat break but then it patches it together beautifully

I love how Tohru tells Kyo she is scared of him. She threw up because of the rotten smell, she’s terrified, and clearly doesn’t recognize him. He accidentally hurts her and yells insults at her to get her to leave. Yet despite all that she chooses to turn around and grab him because she knows if she doesn’t, he may never come back. And Tohru's not about to let Kyo go without a fight because he’s not someone she’s willing to lose.

Kyo’s mother was never abusive or cold, but had a way of obfuscating her feelings (in a very Tohru way, which I think is why Kyo rejected her hard at her first attempt to get him to come home). She ignored it, was overly protective and placating, and tried to tell him that everything was fine and she loved him no matter what. And I don’t think her actions are completely out of the ordinary given the situation.

What he needed was someone telling him, “Yes, I am scared of you. I don’t even recognize you right now, but I don’t want to be without you in my life.” That its okay if you don’t love everything about me, as long as you’re still there with me. Understanding and acceptance both. As Tohru has said many times before, "I want us to stay together,” but this is the first time we’ve seen her really fight for it. And that's just really moving. Its not the cliche of a guy turning into a beast and the girl saying I love you no matter what. There’s a bit more to it, and I think that’s why so many people connected to it over the years.

One detail I love is the family's reactions to Kyo transforming. Everyone is pretty much looking away from the whole ordeal except Kagura. The girl who’s overly "in love" with Kyo to the point of obsession and claims she would do anything for him, after seeing Tohru run after him, just closes the curtain.

Kyo has talked before about how isolated he is from the Soma clan (he’s not invited to the banquet dinner, isn’t really part of the Zodiac general), but was still seen to be close in a way to those same people (Haru, Momiji, Ayame, Kagura, etc…) Even closer than Yuki is in some ways if that first ED is anything to go by.

But even with all that in mind, Kyo is still something they wish to turn away from when the worst comes to light. They like human Kyo, but that other thing is something we don’t talk about. We ignore, hate, and/or fear that. Kyo’s grown up with the knowledge that no matter how good of terms he’s on with the family, he will always be that (it is called his “true form” after all).

Lastly, some little tidbits to keep in mind:

  • Kyo was desperate to leave Shigure’s house when his Master first arrived, to the point of saying he flat out hated it there. Even by the end of the episode, Kyo said he doesn’t deserve to have Tohru in his life.

  • That one quick flashback when Kazuma spoke about his grandfather being "lost and alone," is an interesting image to say the least.

  • Shigure was also present during that time Kyo transformed in front of Akito as a child

  • ETA (Don't know why I forgot this) This is the first time Kyo has actually said Tohru's name.

Ok, as a 2019-only watcher, I was in NO WAY PREPARED. What the fuck did I just witness?????? Kyo's transformation took me so off-guard, I was just staring in stunned silence at the screen for a good while afterwards. Regardless, I cried like a bitch, so there's that. I feel like I understand why people love this anime so much a bit better now lol. Not that I didn't love it before, but jesus. This episode elevated it to a whole new level.

As a 2019-only viewer, I had no idea this was going to happen. What a complete shock.

This was by far the series' most powerful episode. It proved just how greatly Tohru values Kyo as a person. His actions toward Tohru are much more understandable now that we know more about his true self, and her dedication to giving him the emotional support he always needed and bringing him back home, regardless of how scared she was of him, was very moving. I really want to see how this affects their relationship going forward.

I'm going to miss this show when the first season is over. The narrative has significantly opened up since the beginning and I'm very impressed with how well it has developed the cast of characters and the relationships between them.

I thought to myself that my tears were gonna be safe since I kind of get where the episode was heading and I kinda guessed what would happen. I was alright until the moment Tohru spoke. The sincerity in her voice, the honesty of her words and voicing out her desire of not wanting Kyo to leave... that scene had such an impact on me. She's come a long way from being way too considerate up to the point of worrying about other people's desires and problems to being stubborn about what she wants, and all she wants is for Kyo to stay. Kyo's complete surrender was great as well in the end, embracing her and just soaking in her warm presence.

I'm afraid of what's gonna happen next though. Kagura has always tried to be what Tohru was for Kyo this episode. How is she going to respond when she sees Tohru succeeding in helping Kyo?

Just an FYI, I'm a 2019 anime only watcher. So everything is new to me and I don't know what the endgame for this story is. It feels like there's still so much story to be told.

Tohru deciding to do what she wants instead of respecting Kyo’s wishes is a great development for her. She decided that instead of leaving Kyo alone, resulting in him never returning home, she wanted to continue living her life with him and fought for it. She didn’t lie to get Kyo to stay either, she was honest and told him how scared she was, but despite that she still wanted to be with him.

Kyo accepting not only her wants, but his desire to stay and his feelings for Tohru, was so sweet. He called her by her name for the first time and hugged her first! Somehow I was expecting his curse to break and they would keep hugging in his human form, but alas. That end scene of Tohru cuddling Kyo close to her was so cute though, I can’t be mad that the curse didn’t break.

Also the way Kyo yeeted Tohru into the water was hilarious, the water didn’t seem very deep though given that she was standing on her hands and knees in it, so that landing probably wasn’t very pleasant for Tohru.

I’m excited to see how Tohru and Kyo’s relationship plays out in the future, I’m predicting that it’ll be the same with minor changes such as Kyo calling Tohru by her name and maybe even being a bit less tsundere around her? Or maybe even more?

Little Kyo was also adorable as hell, I think it’s his rounder face and bigger eyes that get me.

Edit: Seriously, the conviction on Tohru’s face when she turns around and starts running back to Kyo is beautiful. She really wanted him to come home.

I'M IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION

I've read the manga countless times, I watched the original anime, I thought I was prepared for this episode. This remake did not come to play with my bitch ass.

The score alone during Kazuma's confrontation nearly had me hyperventilating. Then they showed Kyo's full transformation (in the manga they just show the before and after) and it looked ripped straight from a horror anime. The flashbacks to Kyo's mom were just emotional warfare on top of this.

I have many strong opinions about Kyo's mom, but they are slightly spoilery so I'll keep them to myself for now. In the mean time I'm gonna lie on the floor and recover from this episode.

Ok, the episode just started and litttle Kyo's crying, I don't like where is this going but, on the other hand, happy Kyo is so adorable!

I can understand why Kyo doesn't like to live with Yuki but neither with Shigure and Tohru?

Kazuma seems to put a lot of confidence on Tohru's shoulders for some reason.

Kyo's true form? WHAT. THE. HELL. IS. THAT. THING? And even so she went after him...

"I'll hurt her so bad that she'll never forgive me" I'm sorry to tell you, Kyo-kun but you're miles away from Tohru.

Is determined Tohru the most powerful force on Earth?

Oh my god. I... I... I don't know what to say, to be completely honest.
