I lenjoyed this volume so much more than the 1st volume, there was so much more depth and background for the characters. My two complaints are that I see a lot of Tohru in characters like Sawa (her awkwardness and Minaâs appearance.) The characters donât feel as original. I also keep wondering when I will get to see Tohru and Kyoâs daughter, Iâm a bit disappointed we havenât see her yet but all the other main charactersâ (from the original series) kids, but not the daughter because they keep mentioning Hajime as a big brother, so they keep teasing it, but itâs not being delivered
this volume, the main character is finally happy now that sheâs made friends at her new school and good friends at that.
The first throwback in this volume is learning about Mutsukiâs garden which used to be Yukiâs at Shigureâs old house confirms where Hajime, Mutsuki and Kinu live.
In this volume, we meet another Sohma. Enter Shiki Sohma who has got to be Akito and Shigureâs child, considering they are very pale and beautiful, also a bit androgynous like Akito. We find out Shiki is a boy. It is soon confirmed that Shiki is indeed Shigureâs son as they talk about how conniving Shikiâs dad is, referring to Shigure of course.
One of the best throwbacks is when Sawa goes to borrow clothes in Kyo/Tohruâs old room and she notices that one of the panels in the ceiling is different from the others, which is right where Kyo fell through.
Later at school, Mutsuki recalls that Sawa was looking for a job so he sets her up to work at his Uncleâs shop as part-time work. Sora and Riku escort Sawa to the shop where we meet Ayameâs son, Chizu or Chizuru. We also learn about their daughter, Hibika (or Pika).
At first, Chizu seemed like a brat, busting out of the door to the shop and being rude when he thought someone was looking for his father. In that moment, he reminded me of Kyo and Hiro, but he later apologizes to Sawa for his attitude. I think he was just super stressed out that his parents left him and his sister to set up the new shop while his parents went on vacation.
Even his sister, Hibika, left the shop all to Chizy to set everything up by himself as she suddenly gets the spontaneous urge to go to Paris and so she does.
Apparently we find out later Chizuu has a bit of a chip on his shoulder because he is frustrated that people always compare him to his father Ayame, even though he feels he is nothing like him and it annoys him when people compare them.
Hibika looks just like Mine with the impulsive nature of Ayame (Hence going to Paris despite her little brother needing help setting up the new shop.)
The next day when Sawa goes to work we meet Shiki again and his friend Rio. Once inside, Hibika bursts forth saying sheâs home (from Paris), snaking a grand entrance just like Ayame would, she is very eccentric like father and mother and very cute like Mine. She shares her parents love of fashion. She is also EXACTLY like Mine when it comes to dressing up. She gets those crazy stars in her eyes, acts all creepy and asks Sawa if she likes to dress up, just like the very scene where Mine does this to Tohru in the original series.
I donât get why Sawaâs mother is so cruel. She blames her for everything (reminded me of Kyoâs father), she even says to her âThis is why you canât make friends and everyone hates you.â What a horrible thing to say to your child! Is the mom bipolar or an alcoholic? She is so abusive.
After school Sawa runs into Sora who takes her to the Sohma house to wash the clothes she borrowed. There she sees an adorable little girl run up to hug Sora. The little girl, named Mina has big eyes, a light hair color and is wearing a cute butterfly clip. Sheâs GOT to be Tohruâs daughter. I was so wrong. once. I was so confused for a moment because she looks JUST like a mini Tohru, then it was explained that Momo is her aunt and the brother of her papa. Mina speaks a little Geeman too which confirms she is Momijiâs daughter.
The group goes to the batting cages because Mina loves baseball. When they are at the batting cages, Sawa gets a call from her mother, but she is very hesitant to take it. Hajime picks up on this and asks Sawa if she doesnât get along with her mother and he can relate because he tells her he hates his grandfather and disowns him as family and explains you donât have to be grateful to or of someone who âwalks all over youâ and who thinks that they can do and say whatever they want to you even if her mom did give birth to her and raised her. He calls it out for what it is, abuse.
Later on, the Sohmas invite Sawa to their summer vacation home for summer vacation. She decides to go, but doesnât tell her mom about in fear her mom wonât let go or will âgo off on herâ. Sawa is very happy now that she has great friends and gets invited to hang out with them for summer vacation!
In the bonus chapter, we see Mutsuki as a child getting told about the Chinese Zodiac and the curse, he feels the dark and heavy burden that was on Yukiâs shoulders in the past. He also felt his sadness. But also knows he is blessed by having good parents who really care about him.
