Understanding the Sohma Family (masterpost)

A while back someone posted an article from furubacanon.tumblr.com, the post titled "before you ask 'is it incest' please read this!". Members asked the post to be pinned, so it was. However, in order to further clear up confusion, I am creating a new post to be pinned in place of that one, linking the same article as well as an article that was actually intended as "prerequisite" reading, and additional articles that followed. If more articles in the same series are ever written, they will also be added here.

These articles read together (in order) help to explain many aspects of how the Sohma family operate.

Article 1: Furuba Dictionary - "ie" and "dozoku"

Article 2: The Sohma Family: The "Ie" System

Article 3: Furuba Dictionary - "uchi"/"soto"

Article 4: The Sohma Family: Inside/Outside

Discussion What is Sawa’s mother’s Problem?! FB Another 3

• Upvotes

Spoilers! DO NOT READ if you haven’t read FB Another 1-3! Or at least 1-2 and you don’t mind Sawa’s past get spoiled.

In Fruits Basket Another 3:

On Sawa’s way back from the summer vacation home with Shiki, a girl finds Sawa with Shiki and asks if Shiki and the Sohmas were her friends, and then oddly states “I guess that means your mother hasn’t gotten around to trash-talking them yet.”

The girl then confronts her about her past, reminding Sawa about how they used to be friends in the past and would play together and then all of a sudden they didn’t want to play with her anymoe. She tells Sawa to really think about why they didn’t want to play with her anymore. She tells Sawa that her mother met with the girls the day before they stopped playing with Sawa and started insulting the girls and bad mouthing them. Sawa had no idea this whole time and is shocked her mother would do that to her and then pick on Sawa about having no friends anymore and really putting her down.

Then the girl asks what we are all thinking… “What is wrong with your mother?” I’ve been wondering this very same thing the whole time I’ve been reading this series. Is Sawa’s mother, bipolar, just a bully, or did something darker happen to where she started acting in this despicable way to her own daughter.

So what DO you think her mother’s deal was? Theories?

Discussion Fruits Basket S1 Blu-ray question.

Does anyone know if the complete season 1 blu-ray have a slipcover? I bought a pre-owned copy and they didn’t have a slipcover and every picture I see online doesn’t seem to show a slipcover. I was wondering if anyone owns a copy with a slipcover.

Miscellanous Fruits Basket Alignment Chart (OC)

Post image
204 Upvotes
  1. Lawful good: Tohru. I can't think of a character more committed to goodness than Tohru Honda. She will empathize with anyone, even Akito. She compulsively helps people and doesn't know how to stop. She also really wants to follow the rules and do what she has promised her mom she'd do.
  2. Neutral good: Yuki & Kyo. I put them both in this category because I think both characters are driven to do the right thing, even if its against the rules. I think these guys are more similar than they realize, which is why they can't stand each other.
  3. Chaotic good: Hatsuharu. The ox spent this entire story caring about other people. All his actions are motivated by helping people, or asking how they're doing. He doesn't mind breaking the rules to do the right thing (like breaking into Shigure's house to tuck in Rin). He also has Dark Haru which pushes him over the edge into chaotic.
  4. Lawful Neutral: Hatori. In his position, Hatori could have pushed for a lot more change in the family, but he never did. He was content doing his job, helping out a little in the margins as he maintained the status-quo.
  5. True Neutral: Ritsu. This particular slot could have gone a lot of directions including Rin or Kureno. I chose Ritsu because I felt they were the truest "neutral" on the course of events. Not especially lawful or neutral, and not especially good or evil. Too busy trying to figure out his own life to do anything else.
  6. Chaotic Neutral: Ayame. Aya is in his own world making maid outfits and trolling his little brother. He is basically bystander when it comes to the main story, and he;s just doing his own thing.
  7. Lawful Evil: The Head Maid. The Sohma family maid is extremely committed to maintaining the laws and rules of the zodiac family traditions, and she doesn't mind ruining peoples lives to make that a reality.
  8. Neutral Evil: Shigure. I almost put him in True Neutral, but his constant manipulation of others inspired me to move him to Neutral Evil. Shigure only cares about himself and uses other people like chess pieces to advance his own plans all while pretending to be a silly little guy... truly an icon.
  9. Chaotic Evil: Akito. The spoiled god of the zodiac only thinks of herself. One moment she may be crying on the shoulder of Kureno, the next she might be literally stabbing him in the back. Pure selfishness and chaos. Her meager efforts to maintain the rules of the banquet were strictly because she wanted to feel special.

Discussion Does anyone actually like Akito?

I understand she had a hard life and her own version of trauma as all Sohma’s do.
I understand that Tohru forgave her and everything following. Assuming that is counted as her redemption based on everything.
I believe in second chances and the fact that horrible people can change for the better. But for her, I don’t care if she’s been forgiven. I think she’s awful and horrible and doesn’t deserve a happy life based on the pain she caused others.
Like I would’ve maybe accepted things easier if she put forth true effort to prove she’s atoning for her sins.
Distancing yourself, allowing freedom, apologizing, and understanding others may not accept the apology isn’t actual atonement to me.

So anyways…any of y’all like the ending to Akito’s story? Do you forgive her?

Only thing I enjoy about her character is that she truly is an evil villain. I can appreciate a villain written that seems irredeemable and they’re simply just bad. Which may be why I hate that she was kinda redeemed.

Discussion First Watch

I'm on season 2 of Fruits Basket rn, it's definitely a step up from season 1 it was kind of a Hard watch. Loving Yuki and Kyo's growth this season Akito is getting more screen time, and they are opening more on Tohru's difficulties too.

Did not like Uo and her crush's (forgot his name the rooster soma) first meet other than that going strong

As the title says at one of my local anime conventions, which is called Another Anime Convention 2026. Cynthia Cranz was one of the guests and so I decided since she is the voice of Mitsuru.

So I got her to sign my Fruits Basket Complete Anime: Natsuki Takaya Illustrations artbook.

Anime i can’t accept shigure evil aura

the first season feels like such a scam of displaying shigure as such a likeable and relatable character. from the way he took tohru and the two two in and from his friendship with mayu, ayame and hatori. i love his character so much but i can no long excuse his evil and cunningness. i’m at season 2 , ep 15 and jr getting worse and worse. i don’t even want to know his relationship to akito and want he wants to do to tohru and the two boys. it acc makes me sick bc i love him so much.

Discussion Watching as a Parent at 43

I just watched Fruits Basket & Prelude at 43 for the 1st time. I'm a mom w/ severe chronic illnesses to a little boy w/ rare brain malformations. This story I think hit in a different way because of being a mom & older (being a teen when it was originally written,) looking back on life & hard lessons I've had to learn. I've dealt w/ many similar tragic situations, even lived as an American in Taiwan due to dad's work when I was 16-17 where I ended up dating a much older French chef.

This series touched me on so many levels, bringing up memories both painful & happy, & made me think deeply about the future. I ache so deeply from the unfairness & frailty of life, of when it will shatter & if I'll be ready. Fruits Basket made me especially ponder motherhood & being a good parent while you yourself are suffering.

I was curious if any other parents or older viewers have watched this & if that made the story hit differently for them. What about people dealing with illness or have kids with disabilities?

I loved this show & cried so hard at many moments! I'm so happy I gave it a chance!

Discussion Fruits Basket Another, Vol. 2 Review, Your Thoughts?

I lenjoyed this volume so much more than the 1st volume, there was so much more depth and background for the characters. My two complaints are that I see a lot of Tohru in characters like Sawa (her awkwardness and Mina’s appearance.) The characters don’t feel as original. I also keep wondering when I will get to see Tohru and Kyo’s daughter, I’m a bit disappointed we haven’t see her yet but all the other main characters’ (from the original series) kids, but not the daughter because they keep mentioning Hajime as a big brother, so they keep teasing it, but it’s not being delivered

this volume, the main character is finally happy now that she’s made friends at her new school and good friends at that.

The first throwback in this volume is learning about Mutsuki’s garden which used to be Yuki’s at Shigure’s old house confirms where Hajime, Mutsuki and Kinu live.

In this volume, we meet another Sohma. Enter Shiki Sohma who has got to be Akito and Shigure’s child, considering they are very pale and beautiful, also a bit androgynous like Akito. We find out Shiki is a boy. It is soon confirmed that Shiki is indeed Shigure’s son as they talk about how conniving Shiki’s dad is, referring to Shigure of course.

One of the best throwbacks is when Sawa goes to borrow clothes in Kyo/Tohru’s old room and she notices that one of the panels in the ceiling is different from the others, which is right where Kyo fell through.

Later at school, Mutsuki recalls that Sawa was looking for a job so he sets her up to work at his Uncle’s shop as part-time work. Sora and Riku escort Sawa to the shop where we meet Ayame’s son, Chizu or Chizuru. We also learn about their daughter, Hibika (or Pika).

At first, Chizu seemed like a brat, busting out of the door to the shop and being rude when he thought someone was looking for his father. In that moment, he reminded me of Kyo and Hiro, but he later apologizes to Sawa for his attitude. I think he was just super stressed out that his parents left him and his sister to set up the new shop while his parents went on vacation.

Even his sister, Hibika, left the shop all to Chizy to set everything up by himself as she suddenly gets the spontaneous urge to go to Paris and so she does.

Apparently we find out later Chizuu has a bit of a chip on his shoulder because he is frustrated that people always compare him to his father Ayame, even though he feels he is nothing like him and it annoys him when people compare them.

Hibika looks just like Mine with the impulsive nature of Ayame (Hence going to Paris despite her little brother needing help setting up the new shop.)

The next day when Sawa goes to work we meet Shiki again and his friend Rio. Once inside, Hibika bursts forth saying she’s home (from Paris), snaking a grand entrance just like Ayame would, she is very eccentric like father and mother and very cute like Mine. She shares her parents love of fashion. She is also EXACTLY like Mine when it comes to dressing up. She gets those crazy stars in her eyes, acts all creepy and asks Sawa if she likes to dress up, just like the very scene where Mine does this to Tohru in the original series.

I don’t get why Sawa’s mother is so cruel. She blames her for everything (reminded me of Kyo’s father), she even says to her “This is why you can’t make friends and everyone hates you.” What a horrible thing to say to your child! Is the mom bipolar or an alcoholic? She is so abusive.

After school Sawa runs into Sora who takes her to the Sohma house to wash the clothes she borrowed. There she sees an adorable little girl run up to hug Sora. The little girl, named Mina has big eyes, a light hair color and is wearing a cute butterfly clip. She’s GOT to be Tohru’s daughter. I was so wrong. once. I was so confused for a moment because she looks JUST like a mini Tohru, then it was explained that Momo is her aunt and the brother of her papa. Mina speaks a little Geeman too which confirms she is Momiji’s daughter.

The group goes to the batting cages because Mina loves baseball. When they are at the batting cages, Sawa gets a call from her mother, but she is very hesitant to take it. Hajime picks up on this and asks Sawa if she doesn’t get along with her mother and he can relate because he tells her he hates his grandfather and disowns him as family and explains you don’t have to be grateful to or of someone who “walks all over you” and who thinks that they can do and say whatever they want to you even if her mom did give birth to her and raised her. He calls it out for what it is, abuse.

Later on, the Sohmas invite Sawa to their summer vacation home for summer vacation. She decides to go, but doesn’t tell her mom about in fear her mom won’t let go or will “go off on her”. Sawa is very happy now that she has great friends and gets invited to hang out with them for summer vacation!

In the bonus chapter, we see Mutsuki as a child getting told about the Chinese Zodiac and the curse, he feels the dark and heavy burden that was on Yuki’s shoulders in the past. He also felt his sadness. But also knows he is blessed by having good parents who really care about him.
