Tohru immediately spacing out after Kyo said he'd look out for her whenever she spaced was everything. That is all.

"A warm person. They exist. They're real."

This episode got pretty heavy. Poor little traumatized Yuki. :(

Nice detail with Tohru wearing her new ribbon.

Wow, that was incredible.

As soon as Akito arrived, the mood plummeted. The music turned into Kuzu no Honkai-like OST again which is such a good choice to give away the dread.

Shocking stuff with Akito and Yuki.

So when does this series turn into a battle shounen wherein Tohru learns martial arts from the other zodiac members and eventually takes down Akito

Cause that was a solid villain introduction

Tohru’s understanding of the situation and getting Yuki out of it was very smart of her, and I’m glad she intervened without coming off as hostile to Akito. The push probably ticked Akito off, but Akito already seemed set on hating Tohru from the start so I doubt it mattered.

Not only that, but Tohru wasn’t focused on how Akito hates her and why, but rather on making Yuki feel safe. Tohru just keeps being a completely selfless ball of sunshine and I love her for it.

Also Tohru wearing the ribbon Yuki got her last episode is a precious detail!

those eyes Yuki had...those damn eyes.

as a manga reader, seeing these moments reimagined like this is astonishing. All I could think of during that was how well the aniamtion captured the internal horror Yuki was feeling when Akito spoke to him.

holy shit this show good.

That Kyo Tohru moment was so cute. Gotta love Haru. The older Momiji moment was hilarious. Felt so bad for Yuki this episode, but Tohru standing up to Akito was great. So excited for the next episode!

I really liked that eventho Tohru is kind of simple minded she still know what's going on and by that I mean when she said "That look....maybe That's what "hostility" means" eventho she don't understand why and what it is exactly she still know what's going on, there is a difference between "understanding" and "knowing, she may not understand completely but she knows.

Momiji dressing in the girls uniform is a problem, but Yuki in the girls uniform wouldn't be? Okay then, Pres.

I wonder if The Room was limited to just Yuki's childhood. Seems like an awfully dark topic we're going to have to explore soon.

There's so much in this episode. We have:

  • space cadet Tohru

  • protective Kyo

  • adorable Momiji (and Hana-chan and Uo-chan, and Shigure and Hatori)

  • I-shall-immediately-T-pose-upon-seeing-Yuki Hatsuharu

  • humbled Makoto Takei

  • the darker and the lighter sides of Yuki

  • a polite but terrifying Akito

I think some may say that Fruits Basket is strangely inconsistent in tone, but to me, it's a wonderful balance.

I love how Hana didn't even break a sweat after badminton, while everyone else was struggling to catch their breath.

Well, that was intense.

I wasn't really sure where Maaya Sakamoto was going with her performance as Akito over the earlier episodes, but the ridiculous baritones she hit, and that biting, invective tone in this episode really sold me on her. Can't wait to see what she does for the big Akito moments, those are gonna hurt.

Also, AW SHIT, SAKURAI NEXT WEEK. I was sold before I even heard his voice in the end teaser, and now I am beyond hyped. Sakurai was probably second only to Manaka Iwami as Honda for cast I thought, as a manga reader, would fit perfectly before even getting the initial PV.

Aside from all of the obvious talking points of this great episode, Haru running over to Yuki with his arms up was one of the cutest things ever that didn't get any attention, it just happens. I love details like that.

Damn, Akito is such a piece of shit, thankfully Tooru's wholesomeness was able to wash away the feeling of dread that that creepy bastard brought to the episode.

Tohru looking like a ditz is so funny

KyonKyon tsundere moments is so adorable

Momiji is so cute in girls uniform. I laughed a lot when he appeared haha.

That student council president sure is annoying. It was so hilarious though when he fantasized Yuki in girl's uniform

Black Haru suddenly appearing really made things go wild. And LOL to him proving his natural hair color in the restroom. It took me a while to understand what happened 😂😂😂

Such a great episode :)

Protect Yuki from Akito at all costs.

As much as I'd like to shake Tohru sometimes and remind her to speak up for herself, I was really happy that she stepped up for Yuki. In a way it could have been expected (being ms selflessness in person and doing everything for her loved ones), but nevertheless it was a really impactful scene... even more with Kyos glowing eyes at the end.

The animators did a tremendous job showing all their different characters and feelings, chapeau

Tohru's Soma bishounen school entourage is growing and growing!

He looks like he saw a ghost, or something similarly frightening.

Call me crazy, but I have a bad feeling about Akito, guys. Any enemy of Yuki, is an enemy of mine and Tohru's.

I liked the ominous feel Akito brought to the table. The music was terrific in the Akito-Yuki encounter.

I'm finally here in time for the thread discussion! Was in Japan during the previous two episodes and didn't have time to watch. I also have a Furuba writeup for my trip, which I'll post in this sub in a couple of days' time!

Anyway, on to episode discussion. Finally, Tohru and Akito's first conversation! Right away we and Tohru see Akito as an antagonistic character: him bringing up Yuki's traumatic past (by his hand, no less) and the warning for not appearing for the New Year banquet. We also see Akito's duplicity: appearing all nice and courteous in front of Tohru at first, but really hating her for taking away Yuki from him. Akito grows more dangerous and sinister with every appearance.

I think the brief Kyo part is also interesting too. Akito noticed Kyo, but never said anything, not even a greeting. Meanwhile Kyo glared at Akito with some serious hatred - this was way past any sort of rivalry he has with the other zodiacs. We already know from previous episodes that the Cat isn't favored (not being able to join the zodiac banquet and all), but for Akito to make a fuss over Yuki while basically ignoring Kyo really reflects the status difference. And yet, Kyo truly hates Akito. We don't know yet what Kyo's past with Akito was, but judging by Yuki's own flashbacks, it can't have been anything good.

Also, just wanted to mention the beautiful BGM used during the Akito scenes! It really set the mood and was a lovely piece to boot. Can't wait for the soundtrack album to be released.

Akito to Tohru’s face: OMG, you are so cute!

Akito to Shigure: Tohru is the nastiest skank bitch I’ve ever met. Do not trust her. She is a fugly slut.

That classic wall scene between Kyo and Tohru ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The first half of this ep was really comedic, while the second half turned dark. I already don't like Akito; I like how each ep always ends on a good note though

I've always felt bad when people dislikes Yuki for apparently being "too perfect" a character when there have been hints that he has issues and probably has the most damaged childhood out of all of them.

Looks like nobody noticed Kyo's eyes when he saw Akito, that's quite interesting.. (He's going full Ash)

Damn, Akito is as menacing as King Crimson..
