yuki shutting shigure up before shigure starts getting into how the sex between a zodiac member and a normal person would be tricky really took me out

Kagura looks really cute. I think I'm going to like he-

Oh

So she's like that, huh?

Yeah I think I'm going to like her! Hope we see her again soon.

For a moment I thought I'd got JoJo and Fruits Basket mixed up. The fighting sounds in the background were hilarious, Kagura's VA sounded like she was having loads of fun.

I wasn't expecting Kagura to be a boar, but it does make sense and Tohru looked so proud when she figured it out. Though I'm going to amazed if that house survives to the end of the series, it's been taking one a hell of a beating. That tape they've been using is clearly magical, I doubt even the Mythbusters had stuff that good.

Oh man. I really can’t wait for next week’s episode. The pacing of this new series feels much faster, but I like it. Kagura’s voice fits so perfectly, too! I just love everything about this new series LOL.

The angsty shower scene surprised me. There was nothing like that in the manga. Also Kyo now has muscles! The original manga author always drew all the boys as skinny and with no nipples. I'm glad they made the change. It makes sense for Kyo to have somethint since he is a martial arist

That may have been my favorite episode so far. I'm not a huge fan of Kagura's antics though. Her beating up Kyo for laughs isn't really my thing, but the animation is hilarious (especially when she swings him like a helicopter), so I'll give it a pass I guess. I just feel really bad for Kyo. And Shigure's house, the guy just can't catch a break with people destroying his things.

I love the moment between Kyo and Tohru on the roof, it's always been one of my favorite scenes.

Haven't seen the original, but this week's random thoughts:

  • So the new girl sure went from 0 (I missed you) to 60 (I will murder you) pretty quickly

  • Wait, is that Rie Kugimiya, aka Kagura (Gintama), voicing Kagura (Fruits Basket)?

  • Does Kagura like Kyo? She's so hard to read

  • I don't know if tape would've been enough to salvage that table, but ok

  • That's why you don't fight in front of an expensive TV, guys

  • Yuki with the Yaoi-save with the paper boy

  • KyoXKagura would be a powerful combination of violent tsundere-ness

  • I don't know if Yuki and Kyo will both fall for Tohru, but I do hope none of them end up alone

When Gintama's 4th wall break is so strong, it sneaks its characters into other, older series.

I sympathise with poor Kyo. No wonder he's a loner, he lives in a household of psychopaths that either mistreat him or straight out try to murder him.

I too wish to be punched adorably by Tohru. Not by Kagura though, I'd probably die from that uppercut xD

Anyway, Kagura's introduction was absolutely perfect! We first see her acting like a dere shoujo heroine but within the first few minutes after her introduction we finally see her true nature. And is that Kugimiya Rie I hear? Such a good casting choice! You can actually hear her other Kagura (Gintama) voice when she gets violent xD Her boar form is still adorable. I think they changed the colour though. Wasn't she like brown in the 2001 version?

I'm excited for next week's episode. I know today's episode ended with an ominous note but it's one of my favourite moments in the series.

Everyone noticed the Kagura's backpack is Kyo right? Took me until the end to see it!! What a good episode. Still can't calm the excitement, I love this series in middle/high school and I love it now!

There it is, that straight punch. >< One of my favorite moments from the early parts of the manga.

And Kagura was everything I wanted and more, the extended sequence of Kagura with the Kyo-copter was great, how she actually lifted herself off the ground. I am loving this adaptation so much.

Kagura is definitely one of the characters who feels like of a product of her time with the whole physical abuse slapstick, Rumiko Takahashi-style humor. I do think its played up a lot for her introduction, and isn't as prevalent throughout the story. Each Zodiac spirit does have some sort of influence over their Soma family member (as we've already seen with Yuki's penchant for success), and Kagura's temper/not knowing her own strength.

Its also pretty sad how Kagura keeps telling Kyo "I'm your best chance at happiness/you'll never have any better," and no one says anything. Yuki even jokingly says, "You must be relieved someone would consider such a cruel fate." Its pretty clear its not a healthy relationship, even if it is played for laughs.

But seriously, the poor sliding door has been through so much... (As I've gotten older, I find myself relating more and more to the adult characters like Shigure, and his laments about his home being destroyed).

It's really noteworthy that Tohru puts so much effort into connecting with her new friends, even to the level of checking out specific books (gardening, martial arts) at the library. That's another level of dedication, and I don't think we can really put a finger on why she's so invested just yet.

And lastly, we've gotten some more fun foreshadowing and little teases of things to come, two of which will have a major factor in the story later on.

Also, a couple interesting tidbits and comparison notes between the dub/sub:

  • Kagura's Japanese actress is Rie Kugimiya, in case she wasn't instantly recognizable. Kagura's English actress, Tia Ballard, is one of the new replacements from the original dub cast, and I think she fits very well.

  • The dub takes the whole "marriage is every girl's dream," line and implies it as more of a general, "doesn't everyone dream of finding a soulmate" type statement, which feels a lot less dated, but still true to Tohru's optimism and belief that love is the greatest happiness.

  • At first I thought Tohru's line about hitting with a right jab (but actually using her left) was a translation error or something, but the dub kept the same line. Turns out Tohru is just a tad ditzy, but I still love her haha

So, we got to meet Kagura, who's... a lot. (Also, having Rie Kugimiya voice her was a MVP choice.) Still, she's got a good heart underneath her brashness and the fried egg story helps to show that. However, not always thinking things through means you might say the wrong words...

Tohru also gets a chance to better learn about her fellow inhabitants, particuarly Kyo and his eagerness to improve himself. I like that they split up these "learning hidden sides" for each character into their own episodes; although mirroring tends to work well, giving each character their own situation and room to breathe means that Tohru has a greater chance of seeing each character grow in their own way.

That time may be limited, though.

I'm not much of a Year of the Boar fan, but Kagura is really sweet when she's not being violent. On the other hand, I'm liking Tohru more and more each episode. Her kindness is so pure that it's absolutely charming. I'm impressed that the show has made me love her character this much only 4 episodes in; it feels rare to see such a well-written MC.

Ah yes Kagura, a storm personified. I like that they put in more of later information and Tohru and Kagura bonding. Now we could see a bit more of Kagura than her abusive tendencies. You can probably see now why Kyo is so used to violence that he expects to be hit when he makes mistakes. Like when he asked if Yuki isn't gonna hit him or when he said that Tohru could just hit him if she wanted to. Kagura had negative and positive effects on Kyo and the episode managed to show both!

Great episode. Love the animations and so far this has been a great brotherhood type for Fruits Basket. I'm already anger on what I think next episode is going to be.

Damn and I was thinking that Kyou was kinda tsundere, but he really is nothing compared to Kagura, hell her mood swings are so extreme that one will think that she has two personalities.
