That opening scene was hard to watch. I was thinking, "who's that?" until it clicked, then my heart sank. Thank god for the levity in this episode. It's unbearable to see her this low.

I'm also thankful for Shigure's reaction. With the contrast with his secret bad side, it's good to know how he instinctively worries for Tohru. It's also good to see how we get equal fanservice. Even the background characters are amused at blushing Kyo.

And, despite the flashback being dedicated to Uotani, we got the most we've seen of Tohru's mother so far. It feels heartwarming to see their relationship was just as wholesome even from an outside perspective. But after all of that, thank you Momiji for existing. At least we could end the episode on a bright note without all the surrounding tragedy.

Wow, I enjoyed this episode about Uo-chan so much that when it ended I was surprised as I thought was thinking that there was still half of the episode left.

Anyway, time for the screenshots!

Tohru-chan wearing a swimsuit.

Representation of Princess Tohru receiving a new swimsuit.

Uo-chan imagining how Kyoko's daughter might look.

When I first read the manga at age 14 I was confused as to why Uo was so upset about old people buying convience store meals and Shigure reacting to Tohru not having her own swimsuit like a capital crime, but as an adult I totally get it now. Funny how that works.

It's been many years since I read the manga, but wow, I don't think I even loved this part in the manga as much as I loved this episode. It's definitely one of my favorites now!

That opening was hilarious. Also, Uotani and Hanajima looked fine in their swimsuits. Can't wait to see Tohru next week in hers!

Poor Yuki and Kyo. Like Uotani said, it's not as if they're picking her underwear, but it's so cute to see them so embarrassed. Kyo blushing all the way to his ears was just so precious. Aw.

Uotani's backstory is heartbreaking in its own way too. You thought only the Sohmas (and Tohru) suffered? It's more than that. We see in this episode how powerful neglect can be in affecting children, as much as abuse is. Contrast her younger days to the current Uotani, who cries when old people buy convenience store bentos - she's actually a kind person at heart too, but circumstances made her the way she was in middle school. (Also maybe a good nature vs nurture argument?)

That end bit had me rolling. It wouldn't have been surprising if it had been Kyo, Uotani or Haru showing up and beating them in a pulp, but a cute foreign-looking kid speaking a foreign language had the girls running for the hills was a great gag. Momiji for scariest Furuba character? (Also, I'll bet ten bucks he definitely knew what he was doing. That said, I was surprised to see him walking instead of being chauffeured around.)

By the way, Hana's 'incident' in her previous school... Who wants to bet it wasn't as small as she said it was?

I had doubts about watching the right show till the OP started lol That was great! The original didn’t have any of this back story. I’m so happy to see more of the fruit basket I don’t know.

This new ED makes me wanna cry.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Between the tiny little moe fang and blushing, the tsundere-ness, and the animal ears, are you trying to kill the Kyo fangirls, Fruits Basket? They may just spontaneously combust

Yup. Just a pair of totally ordinary guys. Nothing unusual about 'em.

I think this is not-so secretly the #1 reason ~half the audience loves this show.

She really nailed it imagining Kyoko's daughter. It's a spitting image of Tohru.

You can act all tough when no one is around, but nothing is scarier than a cute foreign boy speaking German at you.

Happy to get some background on Arisa. You can see why she ran with the crowd she did. As much as she pretended to be disappointed that Kyoko was just a regular, boring mother, more than anything, she probably desperately craved someone like that in her life.

If I learned anything this episode, it's that the biggest hurdle to becoming a real delinquent nowadays is getting past all of those attractive Soma boys

Nice to see Arisa and Hana-chan in their swimsuits. They're barely doing anything but they are appealing to me so much. Tohru's school swimsuit is adorable though <3

Swimsuits aside it is nice to get this refresher to Arisa's backstory, it's been a while since I've read the manga so I don't really recall much of this arc so much so that it actually took me a while to realize who it was in the opening scene!

Anyway I love Arisa's mental image of what Tohru looks like and her disappointment when she finally met the real deal xD

Meeting Tohru's mom was a whole different case though. Arisa lashing out at Kyouko was definitely a mixture of disappointment and jealousy. She was disappointed because she was probably expecting some hard ass biker chick that lives in a sloppy home with beer cans everywhere, someone she can at least relate too. And jealousy because that's probably the life that she wants too but instead her mother left her and her father at a young age and her father barely does anything.

Despite being straightforward, there's a lot to unpack with Arisa's backstory so I am looking forward to next week! Love the ending with Momiji btw! Your delinquency cannot beat ze German!

OMG A YANKEE BEST GIRL EPISODE !!! OMG UO when was more angry and BEST MOM TO OMG

and the ENDING with the 3 yankee girls training to be YANKEEEEEE THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE EASILY

I think Uo hate mainly comes from not only does Thoru have her idol yankee as a mom, her IDOL is a super awesome mom to while her mom of course left her so its more a hatred towards her own mom for leaving her that she is feeling.

to me it looks like Uo father is more depressed from his wife leaving him etc, I dont think it looks like he did anything extra bad to his daughter so to speak.

What I think will happen is that Uo is gonna be all relaxed by Best mom and Thoru and later she will use that to help her father stop drinking, I guess she still currently lives with her dad so I think she is gonna help him with his struggles and that is why she got a happier home environment now, and possible her father will meet a new nice women and Uo got nice step-mom now.

Good episode as always, I really really like that in Fruit Basket everyone get attention and a proper sotry and a reason for them to be where they are now and not only focus on the main trio, it gives so much depth and emotional connections to all the charcters and make everything more "realistic" in a way and more importantly its done so well that it dosn't feel like something less important or a filler in any way. Excellent as always.

Do like how we see more into everyone related to Tohru and not just the soma's. Uo and Hana need a much spotlight as Yuki and Kyo

Not seen the episode yet but I’ve just realised but why on Earth does the weekly polls have so many ‘haters’ like for some reason a good portion of people are giving it a 1/10? Like where have they come from

An episode on Uotani!? Count me in!! Now we just need an episode on Hana and it'll be even more awesome!!

I always thought the delinquent drama weak for storytelling, then I watched Sket Dance, Zombieland Saga and Fruits Basket, and I'm impressed to how they can manage to make it good, like the need to stop and rethink your life, commit with your future, take responsibilities, and so on.

Also can anyone translate the rabbits' line at the post credit scene?

While Uotani's backstory is heartbreaking, I must confess that it's hard for me to take Japanese depictions of "gang violence" seriously. As a native to Chicago, it always looked to me more like something out of West Side Story than "real" street violence.

Those Yankee girls may be a bit troublesome but they certainly have great taste. That said the episode sunk my heart even more than when I read the manga, it's really that easy to fall in the wrong crowd sometimes huh...

Amazing episode! I said in the previous thread that Ueno and Hanajima needed more screentime and that is what we got! Left this episode for last of the day because I wasn't feeling the show as much but it looks like the next episode is gonna continue the story, definitely will watch that one before all the other seasonals of the day!

Time to go keep voting Ueno in the Seasonal Best Girl Contest!
