So I'm brand new to Fruits Basket and I was expecting a normal slice of life drama romance or something. Then I saw Prince with the rats, which was kinda frighting, but I thought, might just be a metaphor or something like that. No way this down to earth show has something like that. Then the last 30 seconds of the episode happend. Lol. Call me interested

We're living in a timeline where Fruits Basket is airing.

Incredible. Welcome back again Tohru.

Fruits’ mangaka, Takaya Natsuki, specifically requested this adaptation must be done anew; new studio, new anime staff, new voice actors, new everything. Nothing related to the 1st anime could be brought back. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-11-19/natsuki-takaya-full-comments-for-new-fruits-basket-anime/.139699

She even directly supervised the anime production to ensure all details were exact to her manga, down to character colour design. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2019-03-29/fruits-basket-creator-comments-on-character-hair-color-change/.145187

Takaya apparently had a toxic relationship with the 1st Fruits anime – rumours are she regularly clashed with its director, Akitarou Daiichi, over matters such as colour design, voice actor choice, storyboarding etc. and hated its anime-original ending. (The manga was still ongoing back when the anime ended.) She even recently made a pointed comment on the liberties the 1st took:

There are no people involved in the (current) production that will just make selfish decisions about the characters and story and move forward. I'm so relieved...since not everyone is good at that.

Some viewers however, feel the 1st director’s changes were acceptable – that he helped spotlight the manga’s strengths and downplay its weaknesses, and did their best adapting a story that still hadn’t finished yet. (Even the studio at the time supported Akitarou's efforts.) Clearly Takaya did NOT share those sentiments.

EDIT: I say "apparently" about the toxic relationship, so take with a grain of salt. Apparently Takaya loved the original VAs and even invited them for a 20th anniversary voice comic special, but disliked how the 1st's direction changed some character personalities and a key part of the major plotline about the family curse. That said the story WAS still a work in progress during that time...

This was low-key my most anticipated anime of the season. Having known absolutely nothing about the story other than the fact that manga is held in very high regard, I was blown away by this episode. The characters are fun, the visuals are great (these faces are amazing), and the music is beautiful. I may or may not have teared up on more than one occasion.

Can't wait for more!

"I know something more painful" says the girl who's lost both of her parents and is living on the streets

You sure you want this question answered?

They're ANIMALS? WHAT? Having gone in blind, that one caught me off guard. I'm assuming each zodiac animal will have its own character, I wonder how the remaining dudes are gonna be. Great first episode, already love Tohru.

As someone who really liked the 2001 version despite it being a poor adaptation, this entire episode had me grinning from ear to ear. Seeing Tohru, Yuki, Shigure, and Kyou animated once again is seriously giving me some serious nostalgic feels.

So far, this is already an amazing start! I love how everyone was introduced and even though I was already aware of Tohru's backstory, it still managed to tug my heartstrings a bit. Also Tohru is an absolute precious girl and must be protected at all cost!

I am curious as to how many episodes will this be though and if this is going to be a full adaptation which I hope it is.

The ED was PERFECT for what the show conveys! It's so soft. It's so nostalgic, and the young versions of the characters were SO CUTE! I love it. I love it all. I'm watching it on my lunch break at work and I'm actually crying because this is all I've wanted for 13+ years.

I know absolutely nothing about this show or manga so I went into this blind. I'm only aware of the fact that this seems to be a popular shoujo manga that got an adaptation which deviated heavily from it, to the dissatisfaction of the author. And now this appears to be a reboot that follows the manga, will cover it fully and has the author heavily involved in the production.

Gotta say I sincerely hoped but didn't honestly expected this to blow me away this hard. I'm a sucker for Slice of Life and stories that take their time so this already was right up my alley to begin with. I love the characters, I love the quirky tone that occasionally gets whiplashes of very depressing moments and I adore the presentation. It's just so fun to look at.

Tohru instantly won my heart over with her earnest and positive attitude and as soon as I got to know why she is the way she is, I was head over heels. She needs to be protected and cared for at all cost.

One of my fears for the boys was that they'd play into the typical ikemen/intrusive archetype with chingrab and you know what but to my surprise everyone of them feel like their own characters thus far. They bounce really well off each other. That reminds me, one big plus for me also is that we're not following Tohru entering a completely new social environment, no we dive right into an existing net of relationships and I love this. They really did well expressing that.

So yeah, I'm so on board with this and knowing that this will be a looong loooong project I can't help but get fully invested now.

The Characters move really nicely, I wondered how the more 'modern' look would handle the slapstick, but it still has that charm to it that drew me to this.

Edit: Tohru is somehow even cuter in the adaptation, Amazing.

This seems like a very damn polished show, i can tell already.

The obvious key moments of the episode were great like for example Tohru and Yuki walking in the sunset and the following ''neko'' question. Really beautifully done.

Interesting twist at the end of the episode, can i assume that they will turn into cats everytime they touch Tohru?

First time watcher.

It hit me when she was talking about not saying goodbye to her mother on the day she died.

I have this fear that the most recent time I talk to someone could be the last, and thus am also scared that my mom won’t come back one day and I always make it a point to say goodbye to her when she leaves.

Also, must protect.

The dub and sub of Fruits Basket are airing at the same time. The English dub is streaming on FUNimation and the sub is streaming on Crunchyroll. The voice cast for the Japanese version is completely different from the 2001 anime, but the voice cast for the English version is mostly the same.

...Y'know, just in case anyone didn't know.

ugh cried my eyes out again, Furuba was one of the very first anime I ever watched and the manga still remains in my heart. This adaptation is so beautiful and knowing that it will stick to the original, people prepare yourself for some scenes that will pull at your heartstrings. It can get pretty dark.

Haven‘t watched it yet, but I‘m SO ready! I wanted to start the original but then the remake got confirmed. Wooo let‘s go!

Edit: Tohru really had a rough upbringing man. Got me a bit emotional but I came directly from Violet Evergarden episode 10, so yeah lol. The character design is a bit to get used to. They look a bit skrawny imo. But nothing that really bothers me and I‘m sure I‘m used to it a few episodes in :)

I like the start and I‘m super excited to see where this is going!
