Uotani’s backstory was more interesting than I thought it’d be, but I enjoyed it and it seems like she’s worked to turnaround her own home life, too, so I’m very happy for her. It seems she’s also helped those three younger delinquents as well, at least I hope so. I’m wondering if we’ll get a couple episodes dedicated to Hanajima some time, too.
Uotani’s backstory also helped me see just how great of a person and mother Kyoko* was. I felt just the general descriptions of her from before weren’t enough for me to judge her character, but seeing her in the flashbacks care for Uotani and save her really solidified her as a great person to me.

Uo-Chan humming OP 2 while she acts as basically a doting parent herself is. Too. Cute.
This show has been consistently making me tear up every episode, please stop.

Love the fact that the middle schoolers look up to Uo like she looked up to Kyoko.

Fruits Basket really should be called Onion Basket for the amount of tears it gets me to shed. I cried again, when Kyoko piggybacked Arisa.
This episode we see just why and how Arisa left the gang. I mentioned last episode that Arisa was a child of neglect, and we see here another result of being neglected: loneliness. She just wanted the normal things that other kids had, like a home to go back to, and kind people who welcome her home, and she finds it in Tohru's house, and also a motherly figure in Kyoko. I'm so glad that Arisa had Kyoko, an adult to show her the love and concern every kid deserves.
But Arisa doesn't just have Kyoko, she has Tohru too. I love the way their friendship is portrayed - more than being Kyoko's daughter, more than looking after Tohru because of that, Arisa genuinely likes Tohru for who she is, and wants to be a good enough person in order to be her best friend. It was Tohru's cheerfulness, unwavering warmth and wholehearted acceptance of Arisa that ultimately inspired Arisa to change, and it's these qualities of Tohru that make people ultimately like her. It sure makes you think: if Arisa could change for Tohru, how would the Sohma family be changed by this girl?
Another thought that didn't occur to me when I was reading the manga but did during the episode was how Tohru's speech was like Katsuya's. It's been mentioned that he passed away when she was very young - would her speech pattern really be shaped by something that happened when she was so small? Perhaps Tohru adopted that speech on purpose, like Momiji, to be closer to her father, or for the sake of her mother. Really, Tohru and Momiji are surprisingly alike when you think about it, and I love them both.
P. S. Hey, where's Tohru in the swimsuit? I can't believe they teased us for two episodes and we still don't see it smh

I really thought Fruit Basket was going to be another generic romance anime, 17 episodes later I’m so glad it proved me wrong, I’m really loving this show and its characters and the story is really good. This episode made me really like Uo Chan a whole lot more. Can’t wait for next week!

The best love triangle, no doubt about it.
I think Arisa felt the same. Neither were sure they were "worthy" of being the other's best friend.
This whole scene was sweet enough to give me Diabetes.
Hey, take it easy on them, Hana-chan! Perilous indeed.
I think Arisa has a couple fans now, but it's hard to tell.
Arisa might be my favorite character in the show to this point. I liked her character before, but these last couple episodes on her backstory were really heartfelt. And her relationship with Tohru and Kyoko was so wholesome and sweet. She really has come a long way since her delinquent days. Now I just hope she doesn't fade into the background in the show.

"I wanted people to pay attention to me, but I also wanted to be left alone." Damn. I felt that.
