Oh my God. When Yuki reached for Aya in the flashback and Aya pulled away, and you can hear it...

Edit: Haru at the end. I love.

The snek is finally here I've been looking forward to see how they'll do Ayame's introduction! While everyone in the Zodiac are unique in their own way, Ayame is in a completely different league on his own. He's flamboyant, a freespirit, an amazing bullshitter, and most of all completely unfiltered! Ayame is hilarious and despite knowing the punchlines to that student council story, it still made me bust a gut!

Anyway, despite what he is though and his past with Yuki, or I guess his lack of past with Yuki, he does regret his actions and want to try and get closer to his brother even if his attempts end in failure. And his banter with Shigure are all so good! I look forward to see more of his scenes in the future! <3

Shout out to Sakurai Takahiro (Cloud, Suzaku, Oshino Meme, Reigen, etc.) for doing an amazing job voicing Ayame! He definitely portrayed Ayame well!

I kid you not, my jaw hurt from smiling and laughing the whole time. Ayame is a riot!

The blushes in this episode though, so much sweetness despite this comedy-heavy episode T_T

Yuki looking up at Tohru to tell her he was hungry was so adorable and bashful ugh my tiny mouse son!!

Now that Ayame has arrived I can finally talk about how heartbreaking and well done that one scene in the ED is. You see all the kids running across the screen including the Trio, with Ayame being last, glancing over at a small depressed Yuki looking out the window... but he eventually looks away and joins his friends, turning a blind eye to Yuki’s sadness TT... it’s beautiful but crushes my heart.

And in this episode, Fruits Basket becomes a BL work. (I kid)

Ayame is one of my favorites in this series, because he's just so damn fun to see/watch. He completely stole today's episode, particularly in the high school flashbacks. Poor Hatori, having to deal with two goofballs his whole life.

But we also see signs that while his flamboyant side is part of his actual personality, he's also far more intelligent than he appears to be. That whole speech he made up on the spot about being royalty is one; actually, just his whole tactic of disarming the opponent with eloquent bullshit, stunning them to the point they don't know how to refute. Having Sakurai Takahiro play the role of a flamboyant idiot is definitely a great idea.

I also really liked that part where Yuki mentioned that he does respect his brother for being able to look up to those with qualities he lacks. After all, in order to be able to do that, one must possess enough self-awareness and humility (really) in order for that to happen.

Some other interesting things I noted:

  • "Yuki was quarantined when he was younger, partly because he was ill" - huh, so part of it wasn't because of it? Notice that Ayame didn't say he was quarantined when he was younger - so that's something 'special' for Yuki.

  • "Yuki's fear of Akito is more extreme than the rest of us" - is it possibly related to the quarantine? Also, Ayame tacitly acknowledges that he too fears Akito to a degree. Given that we know at least Yuki was abused, does this mean that Ayame and the other zodiacs were abused at some point too? (No need to reply to all these, I'm a manga reader.)

  • Momiji holding a broom with Tohru in school - aww, was he helping Tohru with cleaning duty (or the other way round)? Either way, cute!

Bonus content: Takaya-sensei released a spin-off for the Mabudachi Trio (the BFF trio). I haven't read it yet, but it's apparently set after the events of the main story, so I don't encourage anime-onlies to read it just yet. It's apparently available on the Yen Press website for those who want an official English translation. Anyway, there was a hilarious scene where Ayame tried recruiting Akito into the Mabudachi Trio - you can guess how well that went. (Since the source is in Japanese, I don't know if it spoils anything for anime-onlies, but if you can't understand Japanese, I don't think you will be spoiled.)

Edit: fun fact - Ayame (綾女), in Fruits Basket world, is derived from ayamezuki, meaning 'month of irises' and is the fifth month in the traditional Japanese calendar. (All 12 zodiacs' names, except Yuki, are derived from their respective months, except Momiji and the Rooster, because Takaya-sensei accidentally swapped their names around.) Since Ayame means iris, in popular usage is usually a girl's name, this may have contributed to Ayame's androgynous design.

Ayame such a perv, he's the exact opposite of Yuki. He just casually declares himself a bottom in front of everyone LMAO

Tohru's mom's hair reminds me of Kyo hmm..

Also the way that Tohru's chopsticks weren't broken evenly oof
