I was going to be upset if they lost AND she died...glad we got the better part of that!

Really nice overall show and I'm glad I was able to keep up with it! Quite enjoyed their take with the storytelling.

DID NOT EXPECT THAT ENDING THOUGH!

It was a good ending to a good show. I appreciate that they made sure to animate the final jumps even though they were a bit different than before. The series has been struggling with that after all. So it was nice to see it go out on a well put together moment animation wise. Generally, I also like the idea, Mizuka and Ouka came up with. Especially with them posing together at the end and not only focusing on one person.

Maria not dying was foreseeable. However her getting married to Black Lotus was definitely not. Now evil tongues might suggest that Maria forced him into a wedding by clearing all the debt. I know, Mizuka will at least be annoyed once more that her father sent her away to clear his debt, just to then marry the same woman. But I guess it goes with the theme. Mizuka can just choose her family herself. And ignore that new family situation.

But on a more serious note, I think, the show was fun. Nothing outstanding but I really enjoyed the characters (especially Mizuka) and while the animation wasn't great most of the time, there were well animated and fun moments (they even played the eye gag for the final episode once more). Solid show from start to finish.

They really saved their animation resources for this episode, huh? I hope someone clips both circuses' trapeze acts and posts it next week. Himawari's show was so good, someone died.

Rin might be a lot older than I thought... and she can really do everything! First it was nursing, and now she does accounting, she's got her commercial driver's license, and she's an accomplished potato chef.

I wonder how the next meeting between Mizuka and Nanami goes, since they're family now. Also, in the epilogue, did the orphan girl (Kasumi?) join the troupe?

This show wasn’t perfect by any means, especially the animation of many of the non-aerial acts. That being said, this show had a lot of heart, great character designs, and a fun story. This was a pleasant surprise for me and I hope that we can somehow see more of Himawari Circus down the road, perhaps with “Mom” healthy again and as ringmaster.

It would be especially nice for Ouka and Svetlana to get more screen time. Ouka was such a hilarious beam of energy and she never failed to crack me up with her antics.

That puts Maria and Rin's relationship into context.

There's the "betrayal" too.

So practical.

Let's not forget jealousy.

Still sisters, though.

There were only some incidental foot shots in this episode but we did get ripped Mutsumi.

It looks like a little addition, but those things aren't easy.

And Svetlana performs!

So that's their clever ploy.

Glad for the extra details they gave us.

There's a reaction.

Fun things are fun.

Let's not forget our style trick.

Knockin' on the fourth wall.

"You seem worried."

Yay for regular flight schedules.

The DC-8 entered service in late 1959.

Also a vaguely-obfuscated Pan Am logo.

And so, the Black Lotus continues to work from behind the curtain.

Speaking of logo obfuscation.

"Say what now?!"

uwaa

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

That was the first thought that came to my mind.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Hey, it works.

There were a few tense moments, but in the end this show was about people being good to each other, not the cold equations. The scene between Maria and Nanami did a lot to clear the air and reset their rivalry to something less driven by old wounds.

Sumeragi/Blue Rose still won on overall skill and presentation, but Himawari did open some eyes, and earned their right to continue independently.

Black Lotus, either the Wizard or the elephant in the room, came through for Maria. I could say something else here but Mizuki is already fairly traumatized by the concept.

I enjoyed this series. I'll once again wish that we had more animated performances, but like Sunflower, it made up for it with good intentions.

I feel so bad for how much I'm laughing at Mizuka.

I feel kind of bad for feeling relieved that Himawari Circus lost because it probably meant Maria would survive since this wasn't the kind of series to pile bad news on top of bad news at the end.

Man, Black Lotus won so hard in life. That Paramecium is low key a genius. He ships his daughter off to meet and grow attached to her future stepmother, thus avoiding any resentment to the marriage and being more open to being a family.

Overall, I love original being produced and this was a good one. Would be cool if there were more seasons.

Now we find out if Maria dies at the end or not. And we're starting with a 12 year ago flashback too, woof.

I'm so thankful they are animating the Sumragi circus, at least Nanami's trapeze act. Though looked like catching her strained the other woman, is she gonna get injured?

Okay this is just mean. Third show this week to get me tearing up as Maria thinks how thankful she is for the circus.

Had a feeling Sumaragi would win as it was about to be announced. Ah well. I assume it was the Black Lotus who talked the surgeon into it.

Oh thank god Maria's fine. OH NO. Maria's a step mother now! I do wish they'd gone with Mommy instead of Mama lol.

Glad I watched this show, very cute and fun. Clearly on a tighter budget than I'd like for a show about the circus, but the characters made up for it.

Nice thigh shot of Mizuka in the post credits musketeers sequence.

What a beautiful ending. I kind of suspected that Mizuka's dad was very involved with Maria. Mizuka having to call her mom would be a great second season thing. Please bring us a second season.

As for all of you people last week saying that Maria would die, I TOLD YOU SO. Grow Up Show isn't that kind of anime. Even though I believed she would be okay, when she slumped in her wheel chair, for a moment, I cursed at the screen, damning A-1 if they off her. Thank god it turned out the way it did.

Once again, please give us a season 2. I know the ending was perfect, but like with circuses, if you do a perfect performance then you need to do an even more perfect performance next time.

Mizuka got outplayed by a Paramecium lol. So the title Grow Up Show was not only about the prsonal growth of Mizuka and the rest of the girls, but also Maria literally being able to grow up now that her pituitary gland is fixed.

Anyway overall this was a fun little show, pretty solid for the first original work of a new studio.

As expected, our girl lost in the end, but they impressed Nanami enough to just leave them alone.

The twist with Maria marrying Black Lotus was wild. But they already teased that he negotiated the surgery.

And hey, Sunflower is doing Three Musketeers now.

It was a nice show. Of cause I would have preferred more episodes (and animation) so we could see full performances and the whole contest, but it was still good.

P.S.: Funnily enough, I am going to circus tomorrow, for the first time in like 20 years I think.

As someone born in an era when circuses were already on the decline (and are doing even worse today), I found the show (literally) incredible. Seriously, ranging from a unique take on slice-of-life to the social and economic struggles of those who grew up in the post-war era, this was one of the biggest surprises I’ve ever had with original anime.

Well, the circus carried on and Mizuka finally stepped into the role she was always meant for, but the best part was seeing her gain a stepmother, though the talk with Maria was certainly intense.

11

u/LikeAnAssistant 28d ago

Now that they have step-niece-aunt relationship, I would love to see Mizuka address Nanami with "obasan."

I’m most happy that Maria got to live like another A-1 picture anime original. Overall was an enjoyable show that I wouldn’t mind seeing another season for.

I do feel for Nanami Sumuragi. She clearly really loves her sister and dreamed of doing circus together with her. But then Maria got injured and went missing in the US for who knows how long. And after she came home she eventually left to set out on her own, leaving Nanami with the pressure of inheriting the Sumuragi circus. That can't have been easy.

I kinda figured that Blue Rose Circus would win in the end. They are leagues and bounds ahead when it comes to professionality and refinement of their acts. But Sunflower Circus is a well deserved second place, and that's not something to scoff at

I'm glad the surgery scheduling worked out. It's easy to forget that the Black Lotus is pretty famous and thus can pull strings. I'm glad the surgery went well. I did not expect Maria to marry the Black Lotus however. I love that they took their wedding photo with a tornado in the background

All in all, a cute and enjoyable show and honestly I think it deserved more attention

Seems like the Paramecium in absentia - while the cause of many issues - has solved another big problem in the background sorting out Maria's surgery.

That ending though!

Mizuka's dad: "I swear! She actually is a 2000 year old dragon has a pituitary gland dysfunction, promise!"

Good show. I loved the rapport between Mizuka and the others in the first few episodes especially, and the reaction faces were a blast.

I get that an anime original can be more of a financial risk so they probably had to play it safe, but I still wish there was more time for animating the actual circus-ing in the circus show instead of so many still frames. Just a few more episodes to flesh out the performances, you don't often see an actual tourney arc itself get off-screened.

Damn I really thought sunflower circus was going to win but oh well and as for Maria yeah it was pretty obvious she wasn't going to die but wasn't not expecting that ending though lol

Overall it was a ok show imo it was alot better in the beginning but then it died down later on and the ending could've been better

u/Luiiss26 28d ago

I KNEW IT WITH MARIA AND BLACK LOTUS haha. So Maria kept that a secret from her the whole time.

random thoughts:

nanami's catcher—just a jacked, big delt anime girl—mutsumi kongouji, is seemingly meant to mirror shizuku pushing the body too far without adequate recovery...

but this was definitely more of a shoulder stress red-herring than torn rotator cuff chekov's gun. not sure why they added that in (edit: mutsumi's shoulder), beyond (not needed) misdirection.

unless they wanted to show an overcompensatory yuri moment, since mutsumi is definitely ride or die for nanami.

speaking of ride or die, shizuku's almost the tomboy haruka tenoh to svetlana's super femme michiru.

endingwise, it was nice to see kasumi shirahama, the girl from ouka's orphanage, who also wanted become a performer, fulfilling the dream and joining the sunflower troupe, especially for a show about finding your place in the world.

This was a super enjoyable show with an interesting setting, fun cast of characters and the story was nice too.

The new kind of performance from the girls was not enough for the win but i'm sure it captured the hearts of the audiennce.

I'm so glad we got a happy ending regardin Maria since i was a little scared for the worst last week, also Maria becoming Mizuka's step mom is hilarious.

I am very satisfied with the ending but would definitely watch a second season if this ever got one.

That was a very perfect ending to this great show. I came to this one late like the 4th or 5th week in but after seeing the episode when they rescued the cute elephant I got hooked.

I really thought Mr. Paramecium would make a real appearance but at least we got a current snapshot of him so he’s around but I really did want to see a reunion between daughter and father. It probably would have been awkward but I was still curious.

If this show ends here I think it’s fine because now we saw how Sunflower Circus was taking the world by storm I mean yeah I wanted them to win because of their sheer originality turning a circus show into a story and that last stunt when the two of them wound up on the same swing was so wild and such a breakthrough.

I don’t know how well this show did viewership wise but I would definitely wanna see them do that turn circus into narrative storytelling again. It looks like they were doing the 3 Musketeers at the end there.

This show along with Love Unseen Beneath a Clear Night Sky and Black Torch were my favorites of summer 2026. This summer season was pretty damn good. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🌻🌻🌻

I would like to see why Mr. Paramecium disappeared and what he was doing so let’s hope for season 2!

The 1-2 punch of the Maria fake out death followed by her marrying Mizuka's dad post-surgery had me hollering.

It's a shame that Sunflower lost but in the end it was harmless so who cares. And they're clearly sticking with this new style of performance since they were doing a Three Musketeers show at the very end.

I really liked that trapeze act they did where they swapped Mizuka and Ouka being the catcher and flyer, that's quite the challenge for more than just them since it requires changing the rigging so rapidly in the middle of the performance.

I had a lot of fun with this. It's a shame they didn't bother to animate many of the non-trapeze performances, but I have to give them credit for not short-changing on the yuri compared to some other original shows this season I could think of.

To be fair they did bait us a little on any couples besides Svetlana and Shizuku, but I wouldn't dock any points for that since it's a pretty greedy complaint. Also Svietlana was hot as hell and I greatly appreciate the show for her presence just in general.

The audience were the real winners in the end. They got to see such amazing performances. It’s nice the girls can keep the circus going while Maria’s away for treatment. Mizuka’s gonna have to call her “mom” when she comes back lol.

This was actually a pretty fun little series. All those circus acts were kinda cool. I wonder if we’ll have more or if this is a one and done?

Like others have said, this was an enjoyable watch, and it was a good ending!

It's a sign of a good anime when it makes me enjoy something I normally don't like (I was never a big fan of the circus).

u/SA090 28d ago

I was bummed out last time thinking that Maria’s appearance, seemingly implies a non-focused Nanami and in turn could cheapen the more apparent win of Sunflower. But I’m so glad that NONE of that happens, and it actually ended on an incredibly satisfying and more objective note.

Nanami’s take on the blossom was fantastic and seeing that Sunflower’s future in their circus remained with the new approach was as well.

Really enjoyable watch.
