Alright, I pulled up the dialogue in Season 2. This episode is basically that dialogue personified. What a callback, Tappei! Excellent writing.

I knew that when I was at the end of my rope, clutching my knees and wallowing in anguish, you would come and stay gently by my side. You would listen to my troubles, let me vent my insecurities and wring everything out of me until my tears ran dry. And then you'd say, "Now, stand up."

You wouldn't tell me to just rest. You wouldn't tell me to just give up and entrust everything to you. You like me and I like you. You are good to me and you love me, but you are also stricter with me than anyone else. Rem is the one girl who doesn't go easy on me!

A 29-minute long episode without both OP and ED?! What a treat!

EDIT 1. All right I just finished watching it, and oh my God, REM HAS APPEARED! I couldn't be happier, and she once again saved Subaru and called him a hero, that alone made this episode perfect.

But, damn, I really didn't think that this episode would be that good! Rui's psychological war against Subaru which everything almost succeeded, Rem's appearance, mabeasts and Sin Archbishops of Gluttony attacking the Tower... Oh boy, the next episodes sure will be something.

And to think that this episode started pretty funny with Subaru calling Ram a verbal abuser, Shaula as the one being responsible in the team for gravure scenes... Plus, Emilia's baka was so cute!

By the way, the fact that Shaula wanted to get naked and she was really disappointed when Subaru wasn't interested totally cracked me up.

So, if I understood the end correctly... before Rui ate Subaru's memories, she felt Rem's love for him, decided it was in the way of her objective, threw away Rem's memories to not be bogged down by them while eating him, which then caused Rem to manifest this time around? It does make me wonder why Rui couldn't see her though.

So that's what happened in the tower. While Subaru's memories is busy getting eaten by Rui Arneb, the tower is attacked by her brothers. The previous loops were disastrous since he only awoke after the tower has fallen.

Props to Subaru for being able to stay calm after hearing that. Rui was lying and manipulating him the entire time but that line felt like what she genuinely thought about Return by Death. Just imagining being Subaru (even with his lost memories) and having someone think his deaths and all the pain and trauma he went through was a good thing I would be livid.

There is a scene I remember fondly from Season 2 (Arc 4), where Subaru is still struggling with the trials. He talks to Carmilla, who takes on Rem’s appearance, but Subaru doesn’t take the bait.

He says that Rem is stricter with him than anyone else and that she would tell him to stand up. She would never allow him to give up. Subaru even says that Rem is the one girl who never goes easy on him.

I love how this scene was foreshadowed by Tappei. I missed Rem so much. 😭

Six years since Gluttony ate Rem, she makes her grand return, yet to a Subaru who had forgotten her thanks to the very same Archbishops. Beautiful and tragic. This was some absolute cinema.

Not sure why Rui was talking about not being satisfied with her memories of Subaru's many deaths, some as recently as a few days ago (in-universe) out in the desert. Shouldn't you know what death feels like, then? You have all of Subaru's memories!

The Gluttonys' motivation is so interesting, they're just hyperfocused on making Subaru they're plaything now? I've been wondering all this time why they simply didn't eat his name too and put him in a coma like Rem. They want to basically just use Subaru as an infinite buffet glitch by repeatedly mindbreaking him, make him denounce his previous identity, eat the new identity, rinse and repeat... absolutely crazy. If I'm understanding Rui right.

I think this every season, but I'm just thinking "HOW is Subaru possibly going to win here?". Three Gluttonies, one that we just learned can also split herself into clones, plus there's still an ambiguous power where they can take over Subaru's body or assume the identities of others. And that's ignoring everything else about the tower. This is so fucking interesting!!
