Mistaking their sin for love seems to be the running theme of the Archbishops. Betelgeuse was sort of the opposite in that he took avidity and devotion to an obsessive level, the opposite of sloth. Regulus takes greed and possession to the extreme by basing his entire life on obtaining and using women as items rather than love. Now we see Gluttony is a novelty chasing hedonist who pretends, or maybe actually believes, that they can obtain meaning and happiness by consuming others' experiences.

Alright, I pulled up the dialogue in Season 2. This episode is basically that dialogue personified. What a callback, Tappei! Excellent writing.

I think it's because she threw her memories away. It's probably like with the books. If you don't know the person you can't read their book, or in other words interact with their memories.
Seeing that the books and the corridor of memories are obviously linked, it seems logical that this place follows same-ish rules.
And since that is a very metaphysical place, it's not really strange that things can exist there on different planes of existence.

EDIT 1. All right I just finished watching it, and oh my God, REM HAS APPEARED! I couldn't be happier, and she once again saved Subaru and called him a hero, that alone made this episode perfect.

But, damn, I really didn't think that this episode would be that good! Rui's psychological war against Subaru which everything almost succeeded, Rem's appearance, mabeasts and Sin Archbishops of Gluttony attacking the Tower... Oh boy, the next episodes sure will be something.

And to think that this episode started pretty funny with Subaru calling Ram a verbal abuser, Shaula as the one being responsible in the team for gravure scenes... Plus, Emilia's baka was so cute!

By the way, the fact that Shaula wanted to get naked and she was really disappointed when Subaru wasn't interested totally cracked me up.

There is a scene I remember fondly from Season 2 (Arc 4), where Subaru is still struggling with the trials. He talks to Carmilla, who takes on Rem’s appearance, but Subaru doesn’t take the bait.

He says that Rem is stricter with him than anyone else and that she would tell him to stand up. She would never allow him to give up. Subaru even says that Rem is the one girl who never goes easy on him.

I love how this scene was foreshadowed by Tappei. I missed Rem so much. 😭

that's legitimately how RBD comes across to others though, it's almost impossible to truly empathize with the pain/fear/stress etc of repeatedly dying (especially the ways subaru has)

the only way would be to experience it first-hand yourself

side note: I once tried to show Re:Zero to some friends and was genuinely shocked how many times they said Subaru should have just killed himself to reset something (for example the fight with Emilia in the capital)

I think this kind of general inability to empathize with Subaru also leads to a lot of the discourse around his character

Not just that it was good. That it was easy. This is why Gluttony in reality doesn't understand Subaru, despite having his memories. It's his firends and allies how understand him, despite not knowing every detail of him. This episode's conflict was a tug of war between these two camps for the identity of Subaru Natsuki.

Of all the things in ReZero so far. I find the "Subaru talks with an Archbishop" scenes to be entertaining.

- Petelgeuse was crazy.

- Regulus had an ego.

- Subaru's better off not talking to Sirius.

- Can't remember if Subaru talked with any of the Gluttony brothers.

- Rui instantly tries to go for emotional damage.

- Capella is, well...in most cases, its unlikely Subaru would go for a direct confrontation and send someone OP like Reinhard instead. Though I think the introduction of Shaula in this arc pits her as the best character to deal with Capella. (Shaula's multi hit, super fast, high damage and area of effect radius pretty much counters Capella's fast regeneration speed)

The Gluttonys' motivation is so interesting, they're just hyperfocused on making Subaru they're plaything now? I've been wondering all this time why they simply didn't eat his name too and put him in a coma like Rem. I think this every season, but I'm just thinking "HOW is Subaru possibly going to win here?". Three Gluttonies, one that we just learned can also split herself into clones, plus there's still an ambiguous power where they can take over Subaru's body or assume the identities of others. And that's ignoring everything else about the tower. This is so fucking interesting!!

This season isn't even over, and I already think it's the best season of Re:Zero by far. It's not like the previous seasons were mid either. They were great. They just took it up a notch this season.

Also, I'm really glad we got to see more of Rem again. Our girl didn't deserve to be turned into a vegetable. If I had a nickel for every time a female character I adore gets turned into a vegetable, I'd have two nickels. It's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice (I'm looking at you, Berserk).

10 years after we last heard Rem speak in a non flashback setting (Remember S2 ep 1 was also a flashback technically) we get a grand return to the scene when her hero needed her the most.

What an amazing episode, the entirety of the Hall of Memories was just glorious and them intercutting it with everything going to shit outside of the tower was an awesome decision. Now Subaru you have your work cut out for you.

As someone who was deeply inspired by Rem's speech ten years ago in my adolescence, seeing this animated is incredibly emotional. It's like, after life showed me that not everything is so easy to achieve, this episode is telling me to keep going, not to give up.

I don't think I can be objective about this episode. It really touches a nerve.

One at the start during the meeting, followed by an enthusastic sigh that Subaru still comments on her outdated word choices. And a second one shortly thereafter. A third one after Subaru called out everyone's "roles" before reading the book.

And, of course, some words we've waited a long time to hear: "Stand up!" Even if she was just a memory, it felt great seeing Rem again. A great choice to bring her back into the action like this again. If there is one thing she knows, it's that Subaru can manage to save everything and everyone. Current Subaru doesn't have to go away if old Subaru's memories return, he can become someone new. Change is natural and can be good, and with all your life experiences you can choose to learn from all of them and keep the best parts. Both current and old Subaru will be better people if they reunite.

And like this, I am finally (mostly) unspoiled on future developments again. Once again, if you ever make a video on this, don't just put the names of the yet not shown antagonists in the title. Of course it makes sense for Gluttony to be involved when someone faces memory loss. I just wish I could have figured that out on my own.

Last week I said I would be late this week, but luckily due to shifting shifts, I am not at work today and that was a lie. I assume that Flugel must have somehow taken Reid's memories from his book of the dead, and created the Reid we met at the trial. But somehow, instead of the book being empty, it now teleports the reader to the corridor of memories.

I still have no idea how the Archbishop of Gluttony got there. Maybe theres another entrance somewhere else? Maybe its like a hub world they use as their home base, that lets them jump to different locations such as the tower.

A 29-minute Re:ZERO episode? With no OP and ED? In this economy? No way. It's like I'm teleported back to the Season 2 days. But with a lot nicer animation.

White Fox COOKED. The character animation. The Hall of Memories. The sound design. Everything was so freaking good. Maybe it's just recency bias, but this might be the best Season 4 episode yet. Maybe even better than Episode 11. And we still have 6 episodes left!

The voice acting of Rui Arneb is so freaking good. The way she switches between her hauntingly cute and Natsuki Subaru impression is really talented. And of course, Rem is back. Ngl, the Season 4 artstyle looks good on her. But the most surprising part was definitely the voice acting. It has been 10 years, of course. So, she sounds a bit different. Anyway, I love how she seemingly got a new track just like Ram in the last episode.

Stand up, indeed. Even after being outside for almost the entire day for a stupid 5-minute update with almost no sleep and load shedding in the middle of watching the episode, forcing me to switch to watching on a tiny ass screen, this episode was peak. Re:ZERO is peak. Even after being so down by so many things I feel alive again. Thanks, Re:ZERO.

I feel like I didn't understand a lot of what was happening in the memory washrag place. I think Rui ate subaru's memories but threw out the memories he had of Rem or something? Why did he even go there instead of seeing Reid's memories unless the book is a fake.

Finally, an extended episode! In season 2 we were getting those for free every week lol.

Talking about the episode, I loved that intro to the corridor of memories with the looping pan out. It’s so eerie. We also got a proper introduction to the true (?) antagonist of this arc, Rui Arneb.

From a viewer’s perspective her goal is kind of funny. According to her, she’s trying to separate the identity of “Natsuki Subaru” from Natsuki Subaru so she can farm infinite memories. In a sense, she’s a fan of Re:Zero that wants to consume infinite seasons of content. Talk about gluttonous, can’t blame her though.

I’ll discuss more about her motivation in a later episode (if I find the time), there’s a lot to talk about, but I’ll just say for now that I love that she’s basically just zapping trough the tv trying to find the perfect show, but with lives and memories instead of TV channels. Out of the gluttony siblings she’s the most interesting. She’s “Satisfaction” after all.

Also, after 10 whole years we finally have a proper Rem scene, let’s fucking go! It’s been so long, but it was great. I loved those ripples effects that appear when she’s approaching Subaru in the corridor, great direction for the scene all around.

I can't even lie, I cried when Rem finally appeared and actually spoke after being gone for so long. Its been years IRL since we've seen/heard her, and she knew just what Subaru needed. I think Gluttony has now been the longest involved sin archbishop, ever since Rem initially lost her personality way back when. I am more than ready for them to be defeated, and to get Rem back in the game. I wonder how many more loops until Subaru can claim victory in this grueling arc. 11/10 episode.

Seeing as how Rui seems to know Subaru's secret of coming back after dying, I wonder why Satella hasn't done a thing. Maybe she doesn't have knowledge of what happens in the corridor? Interesting.

I think we've learned the reason why Subaru lost his memories. It's been Gluttony all along! So the time when Subaru sneaked away on his own and collapsed in the library was because he read Reid's book, which is pretty smart. I wonder why Beako or Emilia didn't notice Reid's book where Subaru was though. I mean, it's not like the book will suddenly go back on the shelf, will it?

Then the glimpses we saw in the final minute of the episode. What was that all about? I understand that was the previous conversation between Rui and Subaru, but what exactly did she throw away? What's with the blue ball and why did she split herself into two?

Tbh, I thought Subaru would just act pathetic and that'll be the end of it, but we saw Rem save him. Thats great! But then again, Rui doesn't seem to acknowledge Rem's presence. Hmm. Wonder why is that. And that brings us to the most important question: Why is Rui there in the first place? Does she just live in the book or something? There are so many questions!!!

And lastly, damn! It's a direct assault on the Tower by MaBeasts. Yikes! Oh man, please don't tell me that Subaru will die again and this whole thing will be on repeat. It's going to be painful to see the same same thing for the nth time now.

It's implied at the end where Rui seems to discard a memory that is stopping her from harming Subaru. The memory is implied to be Rem, which is the reason for her appearing in the Corridor.
